To protect sensitive files when using an AI assistant on a Mac, limit the app’s macOS permissions, send only the information needed, and check the specific service and account’s data policies before sharing. These are separate safeguards: macOS controls what an app can access locally, while the AI provider’s terms govern information you send to its service. FileVault helps protect a Mac’s startup volume if the device is lost or accessed offline; it does not make an uploaded file private.
Can an AI assistant access files on your Mac?
It depends on the app, the task, and permissions you grant. macOS provides controls for access to locations such as Desktop, Downloads, and Documents. An assistant may also receive a file you deliberately attach or text you paste, which is different from granting it ongoing access to a folder.
Review access in Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security. Under Files & Folders, inspect each AI app and turn off access to locations it does not need. Apple says you can review and change these permissions there. If you allow a third-party app to access files, how information it collects is handled under that provider’s privacy terms. Apple’s Files & Folders privacy settings
Be cautious with Full Disk Access
Full Disk Access is broader than access to one folder. Apple describes it as access to all files, including data from other apps such as Mail, Messages, and Safari, files in your home folder, Time Machine backups, and certain administrative settings. Do not grant it casually. If an assistant requests it, first identify the feature that needs the permission and whether a narrower workflow—such as selecting one file yourself—will work instead. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Review Accessibility and Automation too
These permissions are not the same as file-and-folder access. Accessibility can let an app interact with your Mac’s interface; Automation can let it control other apps or run scripts and system commands. Consider what the particular assistant feature does before approving either permission, and avoid granting access simply because an app asks for it.
How to reduce what you send to an AI service
Once content leaves your Mac, local permissions no longer determine how the service handles it. Before sending a document, use the smallest amount of information that can answer your question.

- Share a relevant excerpt rather than an entire folder or document when possible.
- Remove names, account numbers, addresses, and other identifiers that are not needed for the task.
- Use a synthetic example if the real record is unnecessary.
- Choose an attachment deliberately. A file picker or attachment prompt is a chance to check exactly what will be sent.
These are practical ways to reduce disclosure, not special protections supplied by a particular AI product. Pasting text, attaching a file, using a desktop client, and invoking an assistant through a system integration can follow different workflows; check what each action transmits.

Check the service, account, and settings before sharing
“AI assistant” does not describe one data-handling model. A browser session, a Mac app, an operating-system integration, and a business account may have different upload paths, terms, retention rules, and controls. For the exact product and account you plan to use, look for:

- Whether the task runs on your Mac or sends content to a cloud service.
- Which files, prompts, or other information are sent when you invoke the feature.
- How long conversations and uploaded files are retained, and what deletion exceptions apply.
- Whether content may be used to improve models, and whether changing that setting affects only future conversations.
- Whether the policy differs by account type, plan, or organization setting.
Do not assume a setting removes information already sent. For example, OpenAI’s help page for its ChatGPT macOS app says uploaded files are stored in the cloud and tied to the account, rather than only on the Mac. It says deleted chats and files are removed within 30 days, with exceptions for de-identification and legal or security obligations. The page also says individual-user content may be used to improve models by default, and opting out applies to new conversations. These are OpenAI-specific statements; check the current policy and your account settings before relying on them. OpenAI’s ChatGPT macOS app file-upload guidance
Policies can also vary within one provider’s products and account types. Anthropic’s consumer guidance describes model-improvement use under stated conditions. A separate notice effective June 9, 2026, covers specified models in listed organization and zero-data-retention contexts: it describes 30-day retention of prompts and outputs for safety work, and says the update does not affect consumer Free, Pro, and Max plans. Do not treat that scoped notice as a universal retention period for all Claude use. Anthropic’s guidance on personal data and model training · Anthropic’s privacy-policy update

What FileVault protects—and what it does not
FileVault encrypts the Mac’s startup volume and requires valid credentials to access it. Apple says that without login credentials or a recovery key, the volume remains encrypted even if the physical storage is removed. This helps protect data if a Mac is lost or someone tries to access its storage offline. Apple’s FileVault guidance

When on-device AI or Apple Intelligence changes the picture
Some AI tasks can run locally, but not every request does. Apple says many Apple Intelligence tasks run on device, while more complex requests may use Private Cloud Compute (PCC). Apple states that information routed to PCC is not stored and is used only to fulfill the request. Those are Apple’s assurances about Apple’s own system, not a general guarantee about other AI services. Apple’s Private Cloud Compute security overview
Apple’s optional ChatGPT integration
Apple says its ChatGPT extension is off by default and asks before information is shared. When you invoke it, the request and any attachments you select can be sent to ChatGPT. If you sign in to a ChatGPT account, that account’s settings and OpenAI policies apply. Apple’s disclosure says that if you use the extension without an account, the information is processed solely to fulfill the request and is not used for model training. This is an optional integration for supported features, not a description of every Apple Intelligence task. Apple’s Apple Intelligence privacy disclosure
A practical pre-send check
- Check local access: Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security, then review the AI app under Files & Folders. Remove access it does not need.
- Question broad permissions: Before granting Full Disk Access, Accessibility, or Automation, confirm what the specific feature requires and whether you can complete the task by selecting a file yourself.
- Minimize the material: Use an excerpt or a redacted or synthetic example when that is enough.
- Confirm the destination: Check whether the feature is on-device or sends information to a provider, and which attachments or prompt content will be included.
- Check current terms for your account: Review retention, deletion, model-improvement, and plan-specific settings before sharing sensitive material.
Sources and scope
macOS permission controls, FileVault, Apple Intelligence, and Apple’s ChatGPT integration describe different boundaries: local app access, storage encryption, Apple’s processing paths, and an optional third-party service. Provider policies can change and may vary by account or workflow, so verify the applicable terms when you use the feature. Apple’s cited Platform Security chapter, dated February 18, 2021, states the company’s design principle that users should have transparency, consent, and control over app data access; that statement is Apple’s position, not an independent assessment.
