Keep reusable payment credentials out of the agent’s context whenever possible. Do not paste a full card number, security code, bank password, or reusable payment key into an ordinary chat or agent prompt. Use a payment flow in which a trusted payment provider keeps the underlying credential and gives the agent only a narrowly scoped authorization—ideally limited to the approved merchant, amount, transaction, and time window. Require human approval for consequential purchases, log what the agent does, monitor transactions, and maintain a fast way to revoke its authority.
This reduces exposure, but it is not a complete safety or compliance solution. Tokenization does not automatically remove every system from PCI DSS scope, and an agent can still be manipulated, make a wrong purchase, or misuse any tools it has been granted. The controls below explain how consumers, merchants, developers, and payment providers can design the flow responsibly.
What “safe” agent payment should look like
An AI agent should not need to know a reusable card number to complete a purchase. The safer pattern is delegated payment: you approve a defined transaction, a payment service provider (PSP) or wallet keeps the underlying credential, and the agent receives a token or authorization that works only within the approved boundaries. The Agentic Commerce Protocol describes a one-time payment request with a maximum charge and expiry; the trusted PSP returns a payment token rather than exposing the original card credential. Its specification describes the token as single-use and constrained. See the documented commerce flow and the payment specification.
“Tokenized” alone is not a verdict. Evaluate the complete data flow: what the agent can see, what the token can authorize, who approves a transaction, who can revoke access, what gets logged, and which systems remain connected to account data.

- Credential isolation: PAN (the card number), CVV, bank credentials, and reusable API keys stay in the PSP, issuer, wallet, or a properly protected vault—not in model prompts, context windows, tool output, analytics, or ordinary logs.
- Constrained authority: The authorization has the smallest practical amount, merchant or category restriction, purpose, and expiry.
- Human accountability: A named person or team owns approval policy, exceptions, monitoring, and incident response.
- Observability and control: Actions are attributable and logged, unusual activity generates alerts, and an operator can disable the agent or revoke its payment authority quickly.
- Ongoing validation: The integration is tested against prompt injection, malformed output, model changes, and payment failures rather than trusted indefinitely after launch.
How do I stop an AI agent from seeing my credit-card number?
Use a purpose-built payment handoff
Never enter a full card number, CVV, online-banking password, recovery code, or reusable payment token into a general-purpose conversation. Instead, begin checkout in a payment-provider or merchant interface that is specifically designed to authorize an agent transaction. The handoff should let the provider collect the credential directly and return a constrained authorization to the agent.
If a service asks you to reveal the card number in chat “just this once,” treat that as a different and higher-risk design. You cannot make an exposed reusable credential safe merely by instructing the model not to repeat it; prompts can be retained, copied into logs, surfaced to tools, or disclosed through a later response.
Set the narrowest limits the service supports
Choose a maximum amount that covers the intended purchase, not an open-ended balance. Set a short expiry, restrict the authorization to the intended merchant or category when available, and require approval for every purchase or for any purchase above a threshold. Visa describes spending limits, merchant-category restrictions, and approval requirements for agentic use cases, but availability depends on the issuer, region, product, and rollout. The protocol’s payment token includes amount and expiry limits; other restrictions depend on the provider.

A limit is meaningful only if the payment system enforces it. A natural-language instruction such as “do not spend more than $100” is not equivalent to an issuer- or PSP-enforced authorization cap.
Review the complete checkout before approving
Before confirming, check the merchant identity, exact items, quantity, taxes, shipping address, delivery timing, total amount, subscriptions or other recurring-payment terms, refund conditions, and any currency conversion. An agent’s summary can omit a material line item or misunderstand a seller’s policy. Approval should occur at the payment or wallet interface where the authoritative details are displayed.

Monitor and revoke
Turn on real-time transaction alerts and review the account or wallet history after the purchase. Learn the exact path for revoking the agent’s authorization, disabling its connected tool, and replacing a compromised token. If you see an unexpected charge, contact the issuer or wallet provider promptly and preserve the agent’s logs and approval record.
Consider a separate, revocable payment method
A dedicated virtual card, wallet balance, or other revocable method can limit the damage from an agent mistake or account compromise when your issuer supports it. It is a risk-limiting layer, not a guarantee: fraud can still occur within the available balance, and the agent may still place an unwanted order. Keep the amount and permissions on that method low.

A passkey or hardware security key can make it harder for someone else to sign in to your account. It does not tokenize a card number and does not prevent an agent from using payment data that you deliberately gave it. Use strong authentication alongside, not instead of, credential isolation and transaction controls.
How delegated, tokenized payment works
A robust flow separates the conversational agent from cardholder data and from final merchant authorization. A typical sequence is:
- Define the order: The agent presents the merchant, items, total estimate, shipping details, and any recurring terms for your review.
- Request delegated authorization: The agent sends a structured request containing the approved transaction context, including a maximum charge and expiry. The request should identify the intended merchant or use case where the system supports that restriction.
- Authorize through the PSP or wallet: You authenticate and approve in the provider’s controlled interface. The provider handles the reusable credential without returning it to the model.
- Issue a constrained token: The PSP returns a payment token or authorization that can be used only within the defined conditions. In the protocol documentation, the token is intended for a one-time request and is constrained by amount and expiry.
- Submit the order: The merchant validates the order, calculates tax, evaluates risk, and charges through its own PSP. The agent transmits the authorization, not the underlying card number.
- Record the outcome: The system records the approval, tool calls, token use, payment result, and order identifier without placing sensitive account data in ordinary logs.
In the OpenAI-described commerce model, the merchant remains responsible for accepting or declining the order and for processing the payment; OpenAI is not the merchant of record. The documented direct integration is aimed at PSPs or PCI DSS Level 1 merchants using their own vault. Other merchants should investigate compatible PSP implementations and confirm the architecture with their acquirer and qualified security assessor before launch.

Payment approaches compared
| Control question | What a stronger design provides | What to verify before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| Credential exposure | The agent never receives the PAN, security code, bank credential, or reusable key. | Inspect prompts, context, tool responses, traces, analytics, support exports, and logs—not just the checkout screen. |
| Authorization scope | Token or wallet authority is limited by transaction, merchant or use case, amount, and expiry. | Confirm the provider technically enforces each boundary and document defaults when a restriction is unavailable. |
| Approval | The user approves each purchase or purchases above a defined threshold. | Check whether approval shows authoritative totals and recurring terms, and whether an agent can bypass it through another tool. |
| Revocation | A user or operator can disable the agent and revoke payment authority quickly. | Test the revocation path, propagation time, outstanding tokens, and emergency support contact. |
| Oversight | Requests, approvals, tool calls, decisions, and outcomes are attributable and monitored. | Ensure logs are tamper-evident and do not leak account data; assign a responsible reviewer. |
| Merchant responsibility | The merchant clearly owns order validation, payment processing, refunds, disputes, and compliance. | Document which party is merchant of record and how failed, duplicate, refunded, or disputed transactions are handled. |
| PCI impact | Account-data handling is minimized and mapped across every connected system. | Do not infer scope reduction from the word “token.” Obtain current assessor and acquirer guidance. |
| Availability | The feature is supported for the specific issuer, merchant, geography, currency, and agent platform. | Confirm current rollout and fallback behavior; platform and network capabilities change. |
Controls for merchants, developers, and PSPs
Isolate credentials and data paths
Keep PAN and other reusable credentials in the PSP or vault. Do not place them in model context, system prompts, retrieval stores, debugging traces, customer-support transcripts, browser history, or third-party analytics. Redact sensitive values before logs are written, and restrict who can inspect payment-related telemetry. Treat tool responses as untrusted data: a compromised merchant page or injected instruction must not be able to request a secret or silently broaden a payment authorization.
Use separate, revocable credentials for the agent
Give the agent only the tools and data required for its use case. Use credentials that are limited by function, separately attributable, and revocable. PCI Security Standards Council guidance recommends least privilege, need-to-know access, use-case-specific credentials, tracking, revocation, and binding credentials to the AI system where possible. Do not reuse a broad back-office API key for shopping, refunds, customer records, and administrative settings.
Enforce constraints outside the model
Implement amount, currency, merchant, category, expiry, and one-time-use checks in the payment service or policy engine. Validate the authorization immediately before capture so a changed cart cannot consume an earlier approval. If tax, shipping, exchange rates, or subscription terms change the total or purpose, pause and request fresh approval rather than asking the model to decide that the change is harmless.
Define human ownership
Assign responsibility for authorization policy, exception handling, fraud review, customer complaints, refunds, and incident response. The owner should know which agent versions and tools are deployed, which payment providers are connected, and how to disable them. “The model decided” is not an accountability model.
Build auditability without creating a new leak
Record a correlation ID, user approval, merchant and order identifiers, policy decisions, tool calls, token issuance and use, and final payment outcome. Store only the minimum data needed for investigation, protect logs with access controls and retention limits, and avoid recording full credentials or complete payment payloads. Make timestamps and actor identities reliable enough to reconstruct an incident.

Test adversarial and non-deterministic behavior
Exercise prompt injection through product descriptions, reviews, emails, web pages, and merchant responses. Test malformed totals, duplicate captures, changed shipping addresses, currency mismatches, expired tokens, replay attempts, tool outages, and ambiguous user instructions. Repeat tests after model, prompt, tool, payment-provider, or policy changes. A passing test is evidence for that configuration and date, not a permanent guarantee.
Provide fail-safe operation
Default to deny when the merchant, amount, currency, token status, or approval record cannot be verified. Make disable and revoke operations independent of the agent itself so a compromised agent cannot block them. Prepare an incident playbook for prompt injection, stolen sessions, unauthorized payment attempts, duplicate orders, and suspected token compromise.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.PCI DSS scope: what tokenization does and does not change
PCI scope depends on the systems that store, process, transmit, or connect to payment account data. PCI SSC FAQ 1326, marked May 2015, says a qualifying EMV payment token outside the token service provider’s environment is not account data; it also makes clear that connected systems handling account data remain relevant to scope. Treat that FAQ as a specific token-scope explanation, not a substitute for current PCI DSS text or an assessment of your architecture.
The delegated-payment specification separately warns that direct integrations can involve cardholder data and may affect PCI scope. Map every boundary: checkout pages, agent tools, PSP APIs, vaults, webhooks, databases, observability systems, support tools, backups, and administrative consoles. Confirm the result with your acquirer and qualified security assessor. A token in one application does not automatically remove the application, network, or service that can retrieve or influence account data from assessment.
PCI SSC’s AI principles article was published on 11 September 2025. Its 7 October 2026 announcement says the additional AI guidance is non-mandatory and that official PCI standards take precedence where they differ. Gina Gobeyn, executive director of the council, described the material as “a practical starting point for secure AI implementation.” Use the guidance to improve controls, while following applicable current standards and assessor direction.

OpenAI Agentic Commerce Protocol
The public documentation describes a one-time delegated payment request with a maximum charge and expiry, passed to a trusted PSP that returns a payment token. It identifies Stripe Shared Payment Token as the first compatible implementation and says direct integration is intended for PSPs or PCI DSS Level 1 merchants with their own vault. The merchant validates and accepts the order and remains responsible for processing payment. These are platform-specific documentation statements; verify current support before building against them. Read the key concepts and payment specification.
Stripe
Stripe’s agentic commerce guide describes Shared Payment Tokens that keep underlying credentials away from the agent and can be limited to seller, amount, and time window. It also describes wallet spending limits and approval for spend requests. These are provider descriptions, not independent comparative test results. Confirm supported countries, currencies, merchant onboarding, approval behavior, dispute handling, and revocation before relying on them.
Visa
Visa’s Visa–OpenAI partnership page describes credentials tokenized and bound to agents and use cases, with user-defined spending limits, merchant-category restrictions, and approval requirements. It is a company description of a collaboration, so check issuer and regional availability rather than assuming every Visa card supports the same controls.

Implementation review checklist
Before enabling an agent to pay, document answers to each item:
- Which component first receives the reusable credential, and can the model, tool layer, logs, analytics, or support staff access it?
- What exact fields constrain authorization—merchant, seller, category, amount, currency, expiry, transaction count, and purpose?
- Can a changed cart, shipping address, subscription term, or exchange rate force a new approval?
- What happens when a token is expired, replayed, duplicated, partially captured, or used by the wrong merchant?
- Can a human require approval for every purchase or for a defined threshold, and does the approval screen show the authoritative total?
- Which person or team owns policy, monitoring, refunds, disputes, and emergency response?
- Are agent identity, user identity, approval identity, tool calls, and payment outcomes linked by a reliable audit record?
- How are prompts and tool outputs tested for injection, secret extraction, and instruction conflicts?
- What is the one-minute disable and revoke procedure, and has it been exercised?
- Which systems store, process, transmit, or connect to account data, and what does your assessor say about PCI DSS scope?
- What regional, issuer, merchant, currency, and platform limitations apply today, and what safe fallback occurs when the feature is unavailable?
What to do after an unexpected transaction
- Use the provider’s emergency control to revoke the agent’s authorization and disable connected tools.
- Contact the card issuer, wallet provider, or PSP through an official channel; report the transaction as soon as possible and follow its dispute process.
- Preserve the order record, approval screen, timestamps, agent instructions, tool calls, and payment response. Redact credentials before sharing evidence.
- Change compromised account credentials and invalidate sessions or API keys that the agent could access. A passkey or security key can help protect the account login, but it does not replace payment remediation.
- Determine whether the failure came from prompt injection, excessive permissions, an incorrect model decision, a provider defect, a stolen session, or a merchant-side error. Close the same path before re-enabling automation.
A practical decision rule
Do not authorize an agent to pay if the design requires you to paste a reusable credential, cannot enforce a spending boundary, hides the final total, lacks a human approval option for consequential purchases, provides no usable audit trail, or has no rapid revocation path. If those conditions are met, use the narrowest tokenized or delegated flow available, keep the amount and expiry small, and treat availability and PCI scope as questions to verify for your exact provider, region, merchant, and architecture.
As of October 2026, the most defensible approach is not to trust an agent with your card number. Trust a controlled payment system to issue limited authority, and keep a human and an accountable operator in control of when that authority is granted, observed, and withdrawn.
