Protect magnesium-alloy parts with a finishing system chosen for the specific alloy, exposure, paint requirements and assembly materials. In practice, that usually means a chemical conversion coating or anodic treatment, often followed by an organic paint system. Cleaning or pickling alone is suitable only for mildly corrosive indoor service; for many outdoor applications that need strong corrosion protection and paint adhesion, ASTM D1732 requires a conversion-coat class. Galvanic contact with dissimilar metals must be addressed in the joint design, and legacy hexavalent-chromium processes should not be selected casually.
Why magnesium protection has to be specified, not improvised
“Magnesium alloy” is not a single material condition. Alloy chemistry, temper, casting or wrought form, machining history, contamination, service environment and neighboring materials all affect the suitable finish. A coating that works for a lightly exposed indoor component may be inadequate for a painted outdoor assembly. Conversely, selecting the most aggressive process without checking alloy compatibility, dimensional limits or environmental controls can create a different set of failures.
The authoritative standards available for magnesium finishing describe process classes and preparation practices rather than one universal recipe. They do not establish a typical service life, a general corrosion rate or a single salt-spray duration for every alloy and part. Use the part drawing, customer specification or governing engineering standard as the controlling requirement, then have a qualified magnesium finisher confirm the process window and inspection method.
Define the service before choosing a coating
Write down the conditions the finished part must survive. This information is what separates a defensible specification from a generic “coat it” instruction.

- Alloy and form: identify the exact alloy designation and whether the part is cast, wrought, machined or repaired. The finisher needs this information to verify chemical and electrical compatibility.
- Exposure: classify the part as mild indoor, outdoor, marine, industrial or another environment defined by your engineering requirements. ASTM B879 states that service conditions help determine which chemical conversion process should be applied.
- Paint system: record whether the part will remain unpainted, receive an organic finish, or be bonded, sealed or masked. Surface preparation affects paint adhesion as well as corrosion resistance.
- Required protection: state whether the goal is temporary indoor protection, a durable outdoor finish, a paint base, dimensional preservation or a combination.
- Assembly materials: list fasteners, inserts, brackets, electrical contacts and sealants that touch or can trap moisture against the magnesium. The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) presentation hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy identifies galvanic corrosion as a major challenge when magnesium alloys are combined with other metals or materials.
- Process constraints: identify masking areas, dimensional tolerances, conductivity requirements, repair limits and environmental or workplace rules that apply to the finishing shop.
Documented protection routes
The principal routes covered by the cited standards are chemical conversion coatings and anodic treatments. Organic paint is normally considered part of a system, not a substitute for selecting the correct pretreatment.
| Route | Relevant document | What the document establishes | Selection implications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chemical conversion coating | ASTM B879-17R22 | Non-electrolytic conversion coatings for magnesium and magnesium alloys; protection varies, with mild indoor storage or service specifically discussed. Supplementary sealing may be used where applicable. | Choose the process with the actual service conditions in mind; do not treat one chemistry as universal. |
| Conversion-coat preparation for painting | ASTM D1732-03(2023) | Chemical and anodic treatment classes for preparing magnesium-alloy surfaces for painting. For many outdoor applications requiring a high degree of corrosion protection and paint adhesion, one of the conversion-coat classes is necessary. | Use a conversion-coat class when the paint system and exposure demand it; cleaning or pickling alone is limited to mildly corrosive indoor exposure. |
| Pretreatment for an organic paint finish | SAE AMSM3171A | Processing requirements for magnesium-base alloys intended to improve corrosion resistance and produce surfaces suitable for organic paint systems. | Useful when the finish specification is built around a painted part and requires a defined pretreatment process. |
| Anodic treatment | SAE AMSM45202 (verified revision B dated September 20, 2017) | Equipment, materials and procedures for anodic treatments intended to increase corrosion resistance or prepare the surface for a protective organic finish. ASTM D1732 describes anodic treatments as generally more protective than the chemical treatments it covers. | Consider when the required protection exceeds the level expected from a chemical treatment, subject to alloy, geometry, paint and process compatibility. |
Chemical conversion coatings
A chemical conversion coating reacts with the prepared magnesium surface to create a protective conversion layer. ASTM B879 describes these coatings as non-electrolytic and notes that they can provide varying degrees of surface protection in mild indoor storage or service. The same practice says service conditions influence process selection and allows supplementary sealing where applicable.
For paint preparation, ASTM D1732-03(2023) is explicit about the threshold that matters:

When a high degree of corrosion protection and paint adhesion are desired, as in many outdoor environments, surface preparation by one of the above conversion-coat classes is necessary.
That statement does not mean every outdoor part receives the same chemistry. It means that a conversion-coat class, selected and applied under the relevant specification, is part of the required preparation when both protection and adhesion are demanding.

Do not mistake a clean-looking surface for a conversion coating. ASTM D1732 permits preliminary cleaning or pickling without a protective conversion coating only for mildly corrosive indoor exposure. If a part will see outdoor moisture, contamination or a demanding paint system, specify the conversion step and its inspection requirements instead of stopping after cleaning.
Anodic treatments
Anodic treatment uses an electrochemical process to form a protective surface layer. ASTM D1732 states that anodic treatments are generally more protective than the chemical treatments covered by that practice. SAE AMSM45202 covers the equipment, materials and procedures for anodic treatments used either to increase corrosion resistance or to prepare the surface for a protective organic finish.

Anodizing still has to be checked against the alloy, part geometry, masking plan, dimensional tolerances, electrical-contact requirements and the paint system that follows. Ask the finisher which AMSM45202 revision and process class the drawing should call out, and require written confirmation that the proposed process is qualified for the exact alloy and part form.
Organic paint works as part of a system
Paint can provide the external barrier, but its performance depends heavily on the magnesium pretreatment and on keeping the film intact. SAE AMSM3171A specifically addresses processing that both improves corrosion resistance and produces a surface suitable for an organic paint finish. That is why a paint specification should name the pretreatment, not merely the topcoat.
When reviewing a proposed system, confirm the complete sequence: cleaning and any approved pickling, conversion or anodic treatment, sealing where specified, primer, topcoat, cure and inspection. The sequence, materials and cure conditions should come from the applicable engineering specification or the finisher’s qualified process documentation. Avoid selecting a paint solely because it is marketed as a general metal coating; the standards cited here do not establish universal compatibility for unspecified products.

Control galvanic corrosion at the assembly
A sound surface finish does not eliminate galvanic corrosion at a mixed-material joint. The PNNL/DOE presentation identifies galvanic corrosion as a major challenge for magnesium alloys used with other metals or materials. Moisture, an electrolyte path and electrical contact can make a joint behave differently from an isolated coated coupon.
During design review, map every place the magnesium can touch another material or collect moisture:
- fasteners, washers, inserts and threaded features;
- brackets, clips and adjacent sheet or cast components;
- electrical grounding points and sliding contacts;
- seams, overlaps, drain paths and crevices where water can remain;
- repairs or field modifications that remove the original finish.
Have the design authority decide how those interfaces will be isolated, sealed, drained or otherwise controlled. Do not assume that applying the same coating to the exposed magnesium automatically resolves the joint; the contact design, coating continuity and moisture path must be evaluated together.
A practical specification workflow
- Identify the material. Put the exact magnesium alloy, product form and heat-treatment condition on the work order. If the alloy is uncertain, stop and obtain positive identification before chemical or anodic processing.
- Classify the exposure. State whether the part is for mild indoor service, outdoor service, marine exposure, industrial exposure or another defined condition. Record temperature, moisture, contamination and cleaning agents when they are relevant to the design.
- Define the finish objective. Decide whether the part needs bare corrosion protection, a base for organic paint, a sealed conversion layer or an anodic treatment. Include masking, electrical-contact and dimensional requirements.
- Select the governing document. Use ASTM D1732 for the applicable surface-preparation class, ASTM B879 for non-electrolytic conversion-coating practice, SAE AMSM3171A for pretreatment tied to an organic paint system, or SAE AMSM45202 for anodic treatment. Check the current revision named on the drawing or contract.
- Specify the complete process. Require the finisher to document cleaning, any pickling, conversion or anodic steps, sealing, paint materials, cure and inspection. A process name without alloy and exposure limits is incomplete.
- Review mixed-material joints. Check fasteners, inserts, brackets, electrical contacts and moisture traps before production. Resolve galvanic concerns in the design, not after field corrosion appears.
- Qualify the process on representative parts. Use the same alloy, geometry, masking and paint system expected in production. Define acceptance criteria with engineering; do not substitute an unrelated coupon result for part-specific approval.
- Control repairs and rework. Any scratch, machined area or stripped coating should follow an approved repair procedure that restores the specified pretreatment and paint system. Uncontrolled touch-up can leave a discontinuity at the most vulnerable location.
Surface preparation details and a critical dimensional warning
Preparation removes contamination and creates the condition needed for the selected treatment. It is not automatically protective by itself. ASTM D1732 includes a note referring to acid-pickling depth of 0.001 in. (25 μm) per side when removing surface contamination for coating-quality-control testing. That figure is a context-specific standard note; it is not a universal material-removal allowance, a DIY target or permission to thin a part by that amount. Any stock removal must be controlled by the drawing, tolerance and approved process.
Ask the finisher how the process protects edges, holes, threads, machined pockets and masked areas. Those locations can behave differently from a broad flat face, especially when a coating must support later paint adhesion or when a joint can retain moisture.

Hexavalent chromium and process safety
ASTM D1732 lists hexavalent-chromium-based methods but says they are not recommended because hexavalent chromium is a known carcinogen. Do not select a legacy chromate process merely because it is familiar or appears on an old drawing without a current engineering and regulatory review.
The standard also states that users must establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations. The finishing shop should provide chemical hazard controls, waste handling, worker protection, ventilation and documented compliance for the process actually used. If a specification permits more than one chemistry, have the responsible engineer and environmental-health team approve the alternative before production.
How to investigate common failures
Paint lifts or flakes
Check whether the required conversion or anodic pretreatment was actually applied, whether the surface was contaminated after treatment, and whether the primer and cure matched the approved system. Recoating over loose paint without restoring the substrate condition only hides the failure.
Corrosion starts at a fastener or joint
Inspect the dissimilar-material interface, trapped-moisture path and coating continuity. Because galvanic corrosion is an assembly-level problem, changing only the visible topcoat may not address the cause. Escalate the joint to the design authority for isolation, sealing or drainage changes.

Outdoor parts corrode despite cleaning and paint
Verify whether the preparation stopped at cleaning or pickling. ASTM D1732 limits that approach to mildly corrosive indoor exposure; many outdoor applications need a conversion-coat class before painting. Confirm the alloy, exposure classification and specified pretreatment rather than assuming the paint brand or color is responsible.

Results vary from batch to batch
Compare alloy certificates, surface condition, masking, bath or electrical-process records, sealing, paint cure and inspection data. A qualified finisher should be able to trace each lot to the approved process and acceptance criteria.
What the PNNL presentation adds
The DOE-hosted PNNL presentation from June 2, 2020, describes limitations associated with conventional conversion coatings, anodizing or plasma electrolytic oxidation and organic coatings, and discusses laser surface processing on AZ31. That material is useful context for understanding why magnesium protection remains an engineering problem, but an experimental process described for AZ31 is not proof that the method is commercially available or suitable for a particular part. Treat it as a development lead, not as a production specification.
When to involve a qualified finisher
Use a specialist when the part is exposed outdoors or in a marine or industrial setting, when paint adhesion is critical, when the alloy or form is unusual, when dissimilar metals are joined, or when a drawing calls for ASTM or SAE compliance. Provide the finisher with the alloy, drawing revision, exposure, paint system, masking and acceptance criteria. Ask for confirmation of the exact process class, current specification revision, inspection method, repair limits and environmental controls.
The active ASTM D1732 page was updated November 9, 2023. ASTM B879 is shown as active revision B879-17R22. SAE lists AMSM3171A as stabilized September 14, 2022, and shows verified revision B for AMSM45202 dated September 20, 2017. Those revision identifiers belong on the controlled drawing or purchase order so the shop and the design authority are working to the same requirements.
