Protect an industrial PC by matching its actual operating limits to measured site conditions, then designing the complete installation—computer, enclosure, cooling, seals, cables and mount—as one system. A sealed cabinet can stop dust yet overheat the computer; a high front-panel IP rating may leave the rear and connectors exposed; and a vibration-tested unit can still fail if its fasteners or cables loosen. Survey the site, verify the exact model documentation, calculate the enclosure heat load, select the required ingress level, mount the computer to suit its vibration profile, and validate the finished installation under worst-case conditions.
Start with a site survey, not a product label
Environmental protection is site-specific. Record conditions where the computer will actually operate, including inside any cabinet or machine housing. The values printed on a product page apply only to the stated configuration, airflow, mounting orientation and test method.
Measure the thermal environment
- Ambient air temperature at the installation point, including daily and seasonal peaks.
- Temperature at the computer’s air intake or chassis, not only the room temperature.
- Heat from nearby motors, furnaces, process pipes, drives, transformers and direct sunlight.
- Cabinet temperature with the doors closed and all equipment operating at expected peak load.
- Airflow direction, obstructions, filtration and whether the CPU, storage and other devices run continuously.
Do not assume a nominal operating range transfers unchanged to a sealed cabinet, a different processor option or a higher CPU load. A fanless computer and a fan-cooled computer also distribute heat differently.
Characterize contamination and moisture
- Dust concentration, particle size and whether the dust is abrasive, oily, fibrous, hygroscopic or conductive.
- Water exposure from washdown, splashing, spray, condensation, rain or steam.
- Corrosive vapors, salt or chemicals that could attack the enclosure, seals or connectors.
- How often doors must be opened for service, and whether opening the cabinet occurs during a dusty or wet process.
Document mechanical hazards
- Vibration frequency, acceleration and direction at the intended mounting surface.
- Transient shocks from presses, conveyors, vehicle traffic, impact tools or machine starts and stops.
- Whether the mounting panel is rigid and structurally connected to the vibrating machine.
- Cable movement, connector weight and any source of repeated flexing or snagging.
- Hazardous-location requirements and the presence of combustible or conductive dust.
Keep the measurements and assumptions with the equipment documentation. They become the acceptance criteria for the installed system.

Control heat before sealing the enclosure
The computer’s specified operating temperature must be checked at its intake or chassis after installation. Enclosure design is a heat balance: internal equipment adds heat, while ambient temperature, solar gain, airflow, enclosure surface area and the cooling method remove it.
Use the exact model’s limits
Read the environmental section for the exact processor, memory, storage and mounting configuration. Dell’s specification for the Edge Gateway 3003, for example, states that when the gateway is inside an enclosure, its maximum operating temperature must be 60 °C (140 °F) or less; that is a product-specific limit, not a universal rule for industrial PCs. See Dell’s environmental and operating conditions.
Check whether the published range assumes a stated airflow, processor power, storage device or orientation. A catalog value measured in free air may not apply behind a door seal or beside a hot power supply.

Choose a cooling strategy that does not defeat contamination control
| Approach | Where it helps | Risks and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Natural convection through a sealed, thermally sized enclosure | Clean or moderately contaminated areas where heat load and ambient temperature leave adequate margin. | Requires sufficient surface area and clearance; verify the internal temperature at peak load. |
| Filtered fan and exhaust | Higher heat loads when some air exchange is acceptable. | Filters load with dust, pressure drops reduce airflow, and an unsealed fan path can admit contamination. Plan inspection and replacement. |
| Air-to-air heat exchanger | Transfers heat without exchanging contaminated cabinet air with plant air. | Capacity depends on the temperature difference and cleanliness of both circuits; check condensation control. |
| Closed-loop air conditioner or other climate-control unit | High ambient temperatures, significant internal heat or a sealed installation requiring a controlled cabinet temperature. | Adds power, maintenance and condensate considerations. Size it for the total heat load, not just the PC. |
| Remote or external heat spreader | Installations where the computer can conduct heat to a cooler panel or external structure. | Requires the model to support that mounting method and unobstructed heat-transfer surfaces. |
Rittal notes that cooling is needed when the target enclosure temperature is significantly below ambient and advises considering climate control, corrosion and condensation. Its product FAQ also describes dampers and shock absorbers for mechanical decoupling. Treat those statements as design guidance, not as a rating for every enclosure.
Preserve heat-dissipation paths
- Keep the clearances specified around vents, heat sinks and exhaust surfaces.
- Do not place a hot drive, power supply or converter directly against the PC’s intake.
- Route cables so they do not block vents or press against fan inlets.
- Prevent recirculation of hot exhaust air back into the intake.
- Account for solar loading when an outdoor cabinet faces the sun; a shaded location or sun shield can reduce the cooling burden.
Validate the installed thermal result
Operate the complete system at expected worst-case ambient temperature and application load. Measure the intake or chassis temperature, the hottest cabinet location and the temperature of storage devices or power supplies. Repeat with filters partially loaded if the design relies on filtered airflow. If the measured margin is small, reduce heat generation, improve airflow, add climate control or relocate the cabinet rather than relying on an optimistic catalog comparison.
Specify dust and water protection by surface
An IP code describes the protection tested for a particular assembly and does not automatically apply to every face, connector or field modification. Read the full code and the manufacturer’s stated coverage.

Understand IP5X versus IP6X
Beckhoff’s explanation of IEC 60529 distinguishes IP5X, dust-protected so that any penetration must not impair satisfactory operation or safety, from IP6X, dust-tight. The definitions are summarized in Beckhoff’s general operating conditions. IP5X is not interchangeable with IP6X when fine dust must be excluded completely.
Determine whether the rating applies to the front bezel only, the rear housing, individual connectors or the complete installed assembly. Beckhoff panel-computer documentation gives examples of IP54 or IP65 at the front with IP20 at the rear, depending on the product. An IP-rated front panel therefore does not make an exposed rear or connector area suitable for a dusty or wet location; see Beckhoff’s intended-use guidance.
Design the finished assembly, not just the computer
- Use a cabinet, door seal and cable glands rated for the required environment.
- Keep unused openings closed with compatible blanking plugs.
- Check that the panel cutout, fastener pattern and gasket compression preserve the intended seal.
- Verify connector backshells, USB covers, display cables and service ports; these often become the weakest ingress path.
- Do not drill or modify a sealed housing without reassessing its protection and the manufacturer’s approval.
Ingress protection is not proof of chemical resistance, corrosion resistance, suitability for every washdown chemical or approval for a hazardous area. Rittal recommends considering corrosion and condensation alongside ingress category. Select enclosure materials and coatings for the actual atmosphere, and provide a way to control or drain condensation without opening an uncontrolled air path.

Give conductive dust special treatment
Metal, carbon or other conductive particles can bridge contacts even when visible dirt accumulation appears minor. Beckhoff warns that “Penetration or deposition of conductive dust can lead to short circuits, malfunctions, fire or explosion hazards.” The warning is documented in Beckhoff’s data for operation and environment.
In one Beckhoff hazardous-area context, IP6X is required for conductive dust. That requirement belongs to the cited equipment and hazardous-area context; it is not a blanket approval for every industrial installation. Confirm the area’s classification, equipment certification, bonding, purge or pressurization requirements and maintenance procedures with the responsible safety authority.

Match vibration protection to the test and the mount
“Vibration tested” is incomplete without the frequency range, acceleration, axes, duration, shock waveform, storage device and mounting configuration. Compare the manufacturer’s test conditions with the vibration measured at your mounting surface.

Read the qualification details
- Frequency sweep or fixed-frequency range.
- Acceleration or displacement level and whether it is peak or RMS.
- Number of axes, test duration and direction.
- Operating versus non-operating or storage condition.
- Panel, DIN-rail, wall or other mounting arrangement used during the test.
Siemens’ S7-1200 G2 technical specifications illustrate why the mounting condition matters: its vibration values are tied to the cited configuration, and Siemens recommends panel mounting or DIN-rail end retainers for high-vibration applications. Consult the current Siemens technical specifications for the exact values and setup. A controller’s qualification is not automatically a qualification for a different industrial PC.
Use a rigid, secure attachment
Mount to a structurally sound panel or frame unless the equipment design specifically calls for isolation. Use all specified fasteners, torque them as directed and prevent loosening with the approved locking method. Dell, for example, describes embedded Nylock seals in the Edge Gateway 3003 screws to resist vibration and loosening; do not assume another model has the same feature.
- Support heavy cables so connector bodies do not carry continuous bending or pulling force.
- Add strain relief close to the computer and leave a controlled service loop.
- Lock removable modules, drives and terminal blocks where the manufacturer provides retainers.
- Inspect fasteners, brackets and cable glands after commissioning and at planned intervals.
Use isolation only when it is engineered
Vibration isolators, dampers and shock absorbers can decouple a computer from a machine, but an unsuitable isolator can amplify motion or allow excessive displacement. Select stiffness and damping for the equipment mass and measured vibration profile, and verify cable flex, connector loads and emergency-stop movement. Rittal identifies dampers and shock absorbers as possible decoupling options; its guidance does not select a universal isolator for every PC.

When evaluating alternatives, capture the following information in one comparison sheet. A missing value is a design risk, not evidence that two products are equivalent.
| Axis | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Ingress | What is the IP code, which surfaces and connectors does it cover, and does the rating survive the specified installation? | The weakest opening can determine the assembly’s real protection. |
| Temperature | What is the operating range for the exact CPU and storage option, and what airflow, load, orientation or enclosure assumptions apply? | Sealing can raise internal temperature above the room temperature. |
| Cooling architecture | Is it fanless or fan-cooled? Are filters replaceable? What clearances and service access are required? | Fans and filters affect both heat removal and contamination control. |
| Vibration and shock | What test methods, values, axes, durations and mounting configurations were used? Which storage device was installed? | Qualification only transfers when the field installation is comparable. |
| Enclosure | What material, gasket, sealing, cooling capacity, corrosion protection and condensation controls are provided? | The cabinet can improve ingress protection while creating a thermal or moisture problem. |
| Approvals and service | Are required hazardous-location, electrical, EMC and washdown approvals present? Can technicians service it without exposing the process? | Regulatory suitability and maintainability are separate from an IP number. |
What published product examples show—and what they do not prove
| Example | Published detail | Correct interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Axiomtek IPC980 | Listed as an IP67, fanless industrial system. The product page states -40 °C to +60 °C for specified processor generations and an industrial wide-temperature SSD with 0.7 m/s airflow; it also lists shock and vibration tests with stated methods and configurations. | A useful category example for a sealed fanless design. Confirm the current datasheet, processor, storage, airflow and test details before comparing it with another unit: Axiomtek IPC980. |
| Dell Edge Gateway 3003 | IP50 under IEC 60529. Dell advises an external enclosure for outdoor and rugged environments and states a maximum operating temperature of 60 °C when inside an enclosure. | Shows why a low ingress rating may require a separate enclosure and why that enclosure has its own thermal limit. It is not a universal industrial-PC specification. |
| Beckhoff panel computers | Examples include IP54 or IP65 at the front and IP20 at the rear, depending on product. | Demonstrates that the visible bezel rating may not cover the rear, connectors or cabinet interior. |
| Siemens S7-1200 G2 | Vibration conditions are specified for particular mounting configurations, with panel mounting or DIN-rail end retainers recommended for high-vibration use. | Demonstrates that vibration values must be read together with the mounting method; it is a controller example, not a rating for every PC. |
Install and verify the protected system
- Define the acceptance conditions. Write down the measured ambient and cabinet temperatures, dust and moisture exposure, vibration profile, mounting orientation, expected CPU load and any hazardous-area requirements.
- Verify the exact computer configuration. Match the model, processor, memory, storage, cooling method and accessories to the manufacturer’s operating, ingress, shock and vibration documentation.
- Select the enclosure and climate control. Size the cabinet for the total heat load and service clearances. Choose sealed cooling, filtered airflow, a heat exchanger or another method that fits the contamination and condensation conditions.
- Prepare the mounting surface. Make it rigid, flat and structurally sound. Use the specified bracket, panel cutout, DIN-rail hardware or vibration isolator; do not substitute a flexible sheet or improvised bracket.
- Install seals and cable entries. Fit the correct gasket, glands and blanking plugs. Check door compression, connector covers and the rear of any panel PC. Treat every field-drilled hole as a possible change to the IP protection.
- Mount and lock the computer. Use the specified fasteners and torque or locking method. Add DIN-rail end retainers where required, and support heavy cables independently of the connectors.
- Route cables for heat and motion. Keep vents clear, separate hot power components from the intake, provide strain relief and avoid cable loops that can rub against vibrating edges.
- Check bonding and safety provisions. Follow the equipment and site requirements for protective earth, shield termination, hazardous locations and conductive-dust control.
- Run a worst-case thermal test. Close the enclosure, operate the application at expected peak load and measure temperatures at the intake or chassis, cabinet hot spot and storage device while ambient conditions are representative.
- Inspect ingress and vibration details. Look for unsealed openings, filter bypass, loose fasteners, fretting marks, cable movement and connector disengagement after the test or a controlled production run.
- Record the as-built condition. Document the model and configuration, enclosure, cooling settings, seal and gland types, fastener method, measured temperatures and inspection interval so future changes can be assessed against the same baseline.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The PC resets or throttles when the cabinet is closed
- Measure intake and chassis temperature during the failure, not just room temperature.
- Check for blocked vents, recirculated exhaust, loaded filters or a failed climate-control unit.
- Compare the measured value with the exact model’s enclosure and processor limits.
- Reduce internal heat, improve the cooling path or move the cabinet; do not solve a thermal fault by opening an unfiltered hole in a dusty area.
Dust appears inside despite a high IP claim
- Identify whether the rating applies only to the front panel or to the complete assembly.
- Inspect door gaskets, cable glands, unused ports, connector backshells and the panel cutout.
- Check whether fan filters are bypassed, damaged or overdue for service.
- For conductive dust, stop and involve the site’s electrical and safety authority before continuing operation.
Intermittent faults follow machine cycles
- Correlate faults with measured vibration or shock events.
- Inspect fasteners, DIN-rail end stops, brackets, storage modules and cable strain relief for movement.
- Compare the field vibration spectrum with the product’s published test range and mounting configuration.
- Only then evaluate engineered isolation; an isolator that is too soft or poorly damped can worsen motion.
Condensation or corrosion is visible
- Check temperature swings, cabinet dew point, washdown practices and the cooling unit’s condensate management.
- Inspect dissimilar-metal joints, coatings, cable glands and drain paths.
- Revise the enclosure climate-control and material specification rather than relying on a dust rating alone.
Commissioning checklist
- Exact model and configuration documented.
- Operating temperature checked at the installed intake or chassis under peak load.
- Enclosure heat balance verified with doors closed.
- IP code coverage confirmed for front, rear, connectors, glands and field modifications.
- Dust type assessed, including conductive-dust hazards.
- Cooling method compatible with dust, moisture, corrosion and service requirements.
- Vibration and shock tests compared by method, values, axes, duration and mounting.
- Fasteners, end retainers, isolators and cable strain relief secured and inspected.
- Hazardous-location and electrical approvals confirmed where applicable.
- Measured results, photographs and maintenance intervals added to the equipment record.
The reliable protection strategy is therefore a verified installation, not a single number on a product label. Keep the computer within its documented temperature, ingress and mechanical limits after the enclosure, cables and mounting hardware are installed together.
