Protecting digital content takes more than adding a copyright symbol. Secure the accounts and devices that hold or publish your work, keep separate copies you can restore, retain records showing what you created and licensed, and use the appropriate reporting process if you find suspected infringement. Copyright rules vary by country: the takedown steps below describe the U.S. DMCA process, while the automatic-protection guidance is specific to the UK.
What copyright protects—and when it begins
Copyright generally protects original expression, such as writing, artwork, and photographs, rather than the underlying idea, concept, system, or method. A website can contain several kinds of authorship, and rights in a particular part may depend on who created it and what licenses or agreements apply.
In the United States, publication is not required for copyright protection, according to the U.S. Copyright Office’s copyright FAQ. In the UK, qualifying work is protected automatically when created. The UK Intellectual Property Office says, “You get copyright protection automatically – you do not have to apply or pay a fee.” It also explains that adding a copyright mark does not change the level of protection. These are jurisdiction-specific explanations, not a complete statement of copyright rules worldwide.
Secure the accounts that store and publish your work
An account compromise can expose, alter, or delete work even if no one breaks into the device where you created it. Start with the accounts that control access to your other services, especially email and file storage.

- Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on email, cloud storage, publishing platforms, and other important accounts. CISA recommends MFA and advises using the strongest option a service offers; prefer a phishing-resistant method when available. See CISA’s guidance on MFA and account security.
- Review account recovery options and keep them current so you can regain access if a password or device is lost.
- Limit account access to people who need it, and remove access when it is no longer needed.
- Keep operating systems, applications, and devices updated. Secure the devices used to create, store, and publish your files.
Keep backups you can actually restore
A backup is useful only if it remains available after the working device is lost, damaged, or compromised—and if the files can be recovered. CISA recommends secure external-drive or vetted-cloud backups. For ransomware resilience, its guidance calls for offline, encrypted copies and regular checks that data is intact and available. Choose a backup destination that fits your workflow

These are backup destinations, not a choice between “safe” and “unsafe.” The important distinction is whether a separate, protected copy stays recoverable. An external drive does not establish ownership, prevent online copying, or replace a separate backup strategy.

Keep records of authorship and permissions
Organize original working files, dated drafts, publication records, licenses, and contributor agreements. These records can help explain who created a work and what permissions apply if a dispute arises. They are practical recordkeeping, not legal advice or automatic proof that every reuse is infringing.
For collaborative work, keep the relevant agreements and licenses with the files they cover. A website may include text, images, code, or other contributions with different creators and rights. Copyright protects original expression; it does not give ownership of an underlying idea or method as such.

How to report suspected infringement in the United States
A DMCA takedown notice is a request to a service provider under the U.S. process; it is not a court judgment. The U.S. Copyright Office states, “A copyright registration is not required before sending a takedown notice.” However, registration is required before suing in court for infringement of a U.S. work. The Office explains the process and provides sample notices in its Section 512 takedown FAQ.
Prepare and submit a notice
- Identify the protected work. Describe the copyrighted work you believe is being infringed.
- Identify the material to be removed. Give the exact location of the allegedly infringing material and enough information for the provider to find it.
- Provide your contact details. Include the information required for the provider to contact you.
- Include the required statements. The notice must contain good-faith and accuracy statements, including a statement made under penalty of perjury.
- Sign and send it through the right channel. Use the provider’s reporting form or send the notice to its designated agent. The Copyright Office’s Section 512 page explains how to locate designated-agent information.
You may submit a notice yourself or authorize an attorney or takedown company to submit it on your behalf; hiring a service is optional. Make claims carefully: the Copyright Office warns that material misrepresentations can create liability.

Know what can happen after removal
The recipient may send a counter-notice if they believe the material was removed because of a mistake or misidentification. A provider generally restores the material after 10 to 14 business days unless the original sender reports filing a court action. This timeline describes the U.S. DMCA process; it should not be treated as a universal procedure for every country or platform.

Keep legal permissions separate from backup security
Making a security backup and having legal permission to copy a particular file are different questions. The U.S. Copyright Office says the Section 117 archival-copy privilege applies to computer programs under specified conditions; it does not specifically authorize backup copies of other downloaded copyrighted works. That U.S. legal nuance should not be generalized to every file type or jurisdiction. For a particular work or dispute, consult a qualified lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction.
