Do not upload a photo that shows credit card details to ChatGPT. OpenAI says not to enter, upload, or share PCI DSS cardholder data in ChatGPT inputs. If you need an image for another task, remove the card from the frame or make every payment detail unreadable in the image itself, then inspect the exported copy before sharing it.
Why a photo of a card still needs protection
Card details remain sensitive when captured as pixels rather than typed into a message. The PCI Security Standards Council says its requirements apply regardless of how cardholder data is stored or managed, and that cardholder data must be rendered unreadable. Its guidance also says sensitive authentication data must be removed or obscured before imaging. PCI SSC FAQ 1070 is standards guidance, not a determination that every consumer’s personal upload is legally subject to PCI DSS.
OpenAI’s instruction is specific to ChatGPT: do not use its inputs, including conversations, files, and GPTs, to enter, upload, or share PCI DSS cardholder data. The examples include primary account numbers, CVV/CVC, PINs, and other information that could help complete a payment transaction. OpenAI’s financial-data guidance does not establish the rules for every other AI assistant; check the service you use.
Remove the card or redact the image before upload
If the card is not needed
Choose another photo or crop the card out. If the task does not require the image at all, do not upload it. Keeping the unredacted original private reduces the chance of sharing it accidentally.

If the task needs the card’s general appearance
For a new photo, cover the payment details before taking the picture. An opaque black label or other opaque material can work as a physical cover; no particular product is required. Make sure the cover hides the information from the camera, rather than relying on a shadow, finger, blur, or glare.
If editing an existing photo
Use an editing method that permanently changes or flattens the sensitive area in the image. A movable, removable, or reversible overlay may leave the original pixels accessible. Export a separate redacted copy, keep the unredacted original private, and check the exported file before uploading. This is practical guidance for meeting the unreadability outcome; the cited standards guidance does not certify a particular editor.

What to check in the final image
Review the exported image at full size, not just the thumbnail or editing preview. Check all visible areas of the card, including:
- Card number
- Expiration date
- Cardholder name
- Security code
- PINs or any other visible information that could help complete a transaction
Also check reflections, duplicate card images, and the edges of the covered area. If any detail remains readable, edit and export again. Upload only the reviewed copy.

Why metadata, image resizing, and privacy settings do not replace redaction
OpenAI’s image FAQ says the model does not process original filenames or image metadata and that images are resized before analysis. Those details do not conceal card numbers or other information visibly printed in the picture. OpenAI’s image-input FAQ describes image handling, not a guarantee that visible sensitive details are safe to share.
Likewise, a product’s data-use or training settings are not permission to upload payment-card data to ChatGPT. OpenAI says Enterprise content is not used to train models, but its separate financial-data guidance still says not to upload cardholder data. Its API documentation describes controls for API customers—not consumer ChatGPT settings—and says abuse-monitoring logs may contain prompts and responses and are retained by default for up to 30 days. Zero Data Retention and Modified Abuse Monitoring require approval and have limitations; some application state may still be retained. OpenAI API data controls are not a substitute for removing card details before sharing.

If you already shared an unredacted photo
Do not forward or repost the image, and avoid sending it again while trying to explain the problem. Consult the assistant service’s current instructions for deleting the conversation or file and securing your account. The available guidance does not establish a universal deletion or payment-card response process, so deletion should not be treated as proof that every stored copy has been removed.
