Protect carbon-ceramic brakes on track by following the exact car maker’s procedure: inspect the system, confirm pad and disc compatibility, bed the friction material as specified, and meet the vehicle’s brake-fluid requirements. There is no universal cooldown routine, temperature target, or disc-replacement threshold that applies to every carbon-ceramic brake system.
How do I protect carbon-ceramic brakes on track?
Start with the owner’s manual and the track-day rules, then have the brakes checked using the procedure for your car and brake option. Carbon-ceramic construction does not make a brake system immune to incorrect bedding, wear, or track-related damage. The preparation that matters is specific: verify condition, use the correct friction material, and follow the right service instructions rather than applying a generic routine.
For noncompetitive track events, Ferrari North America’s 2018 guidance calls for a thorough brake-system inspection before track use, including friction-material wear and brake lines, and for adequate bedding of the friction material. It warns that improper bedding can damage friction material and, with carbon-ceramic discs, lead to reduced braking performance and longevity. Those are Ferrari’s instructions for the scope stated in its Track Use Guidelines for Non-Competitive Events, not a service schedule for every make.
Before the event
- Check the car’s instructions and event requirements. Confirm that track use is permitted for your vehicle and brake configuration, and identify the prescribed inspection, pad, bedding, and fluid procedures. If the manual does not answer a question, ask an authorized dealer or brake specialist familiar with that system. Also check whether the event imposes its own inspection, noise, tire, or equipment requirements.
- Arrange a brake inspection. Ask the technician to check the full system using the correct model-specific method. Ferrari’s guidance specifically names friction-material wear and brake lines; other makers may specify additional checks or different inspection criteria. Give the shop the track date and expected use so it can identify service work that must be completed beforehand.
- Confirm the disc-and-pad pairing. Match the exact vehicle, brake option, disc, pad part number, and bedding instructions. A pad that fits physically is not necessarily the right friction material for a particular carbon-ceramic system. Confirm whether the car has an original-equipment or aftermarket disc and whether the proposed pad is listed for that exact application.
- Complete bedding as instructed. Use the specified procedure for the installed friction material. Do not substitute a generic bedding routine: Ferrari warns that incorrect bedding can damage friction material and impair carbon-ceramic disc performance and longevity. Keep a record of the work and mileage so a technician can distinguish a properly prepared setup from an unknown one.
- Resolve brake-fluid service timing. Follow the vehicle maker’s requirement for the car and the planned track use. Ferrari’s guidance recommends changing fluid before track use and again at the end of the session; that specific recommendation should not be treated as universal. Confirm the approved fluid specification and service method rather than choosing a fluid solely because it is marketed for racing.
- Plan an inspection window after driving. Ask in advance where the vehicle can be examined if a warning, unusual pedal, or suspected damage occurs. Knowing which dealer or specialist can perform the model-specific inspection is safer than trying to find one after an event.
A practical pre-track checklist
- Owner’s manual and brake-option identification are available.
- Track use is allowed for the car and the planned event.
- Pad wear, disc condition, brake lines, and related components have been inspected as specified.
- Installed pads and discs are a confirmed match for the vehicle.
- Required bedding has been completed and documented.
- Brake fluid meets the maker’s specification and timing requirement.
- A qualified contact is available for inspection if symptoms appear.
This list is a planning aid, not a replacement for a workshop procedure. Carbon-ceramic systems can use different measurements, sensors, and service limits, so a visual check alone cannot establish that a disc or pad is fit for another session.

During the event
Pay attention to braking behavior and any warnings from the car. If a warning appears, pedal feel becomes abnormal, braking performance changes unexpectedly, or damage is suspected, stop using the car on track and have the system assessed by a qualified technician. This is prudent safety guidance, not a manufacturer-defined temperature or wear threshold.
A driver should not try to diagnose disc condition by appearance alone or infer remaining life from a single session. Have suspected wear or damage assessed with the inspection method for the exact brake system. The appropriate measurement and replacement criteria are vehicle-specific. Record when the symptom occurred, whether it followed a particular session, and any dashboard message; those details help the technician without pretending to identify the failed part.
Do not continue simply because the pedal still feels acceptable after a warning. Conversely, do not order discs solely because of discoloration or a general internet rule. The safe decision comes from the vehicle’s service criteria and a qualified inspection.

There is no single cooldown duration, speed, temperature target, or parking procedure established for all road-car carbon-ceramic systems in the sources cited here. Follow the instructions for your vehicle and the event’s procedures; do not borrow a number or routine from a different car, brake option, or racing system.
System designs differ. Porsche describes curved cooling channels in its Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) system, while Brembo says its CCM discs cool rapidly after braking. Neither source specifies a universal driver cooldown routine or a temperature at which every carbon-ceramic disc is safe to park or inspect. See Porsche’s PCCB explanation and Brembo’s 2024 CCM overview for those system-specific descriptions.
Between sessions, use the car maker’s guidance and the event’s instructions rather than improvising a timed cooling routine. If the car has a warning, abnormal pedal feel, or signs of possible damage, do not treat waiting for the brakes to cool as a substitute for inspection. Ask the event staff where the car should be parked and whether its rules require a particular procedure, then follow the manual for the vehicle rather than a procedure from a different track car.
Avoid presenting a cooling fan, water spray, or other accessory as a guaranteed protection method. The cited manufacturer material does not establish a universal accessory, temperature limit, or timed sequence. Any modification should be reviewed for compatibility with the complete brake system and the vehicle maker’s requirements.

Can I use track pads with carbon-ceramic brakes?
Only use a track pad when it is approved or specified for the exact carbon-ceramic brake system and vehicle. “Track pad” describes an intended use, not guaranteed compatibility. Verify the car’s brake option and the pad’s application, part number, disc compatibility, and bedding procedure with the manufacturer or a qualified supplier before fitting it.
Brembo says its carbon-ceramic pads are engineered for its carbon-ceramic discs and specific car models. Porsche likewise describes PCCB pads as specially developed for that system. These are examples of system-specific matching, not evidence that either company’s pad fits every vehicle with ceramic-composite discs. See Brembo’s carbon-ceramic pad information and Porsche’s PCCB explanation.
What to verify before buying or fitting pads
- The vehicle’s make, model, year, and exact brake option.
- That the pad is intended for the installed carbon-ceramic disc and the stated vehicle application.
- The correct part number and any installation or bedding requirements.
- Whether the proposed setup meets the car maker’s requirements for both track and road use.
- Whether the supplier can document compatibility rather than relying on a generic “ceramic” description.
Do not assume that a generic pad protects a rotor, that a pad described as “ceramic” is a carbon-ceramic-compatible track pad, or that changing pads alone makes a brake setup suitable for a particular event. Compatibility and suitability need to be confirmed for the complete vehicle setup.
Vehicle-specific carbon-ceramic pads are a legitimate replacement category, but a product listing is not proof that the part protects a disc or is legal for a particular road and track use. If buying online, provide the complete vehicle and brake-option information to the supplier and retain the fitment confirmation. A matched replacement disc and pad set may also be appropriate, but carbon-ceramic discs are highly vehicle-specific and may not be a normal retail purchase.
Why does preparation matter so much?
Track use can put a very different demand on brakes from road driving, and friction-material condition and bedding affect how the pad and disc work together. Ferrari’s 2018 guidance emphasizes a thorough pre-track inspection and adequate bedding, warning that poor bedding can damage friction material and reduce carbon-ceramic disc performance and longevity. Its recommendation applies to Ferrari vehicles at noncompetitive events as described in the document; it should not be substituted for another manufacturer’s instructions.
Brake fluid also requires vehicle-specific attention. Ferrari explains that moisture in fluid lowers its boiling point; if bubbles form, the fluid can become compressible, increasing pedal travel and reducing brake performance. Its guidance recommends changing fluid before track use and again at session end. Because this schedule is Ferrari’s guidance, owners of other makes should use their own manufacturer’s service requirements rather than infer the same interval.
This is why a last-minute pad swap without the required bedding or fluid work is a poor protection strategy. The components operate as a system. A physically fitting part, an apparently clean line, or a firm pedal in the paddock does not prove that the car meets the maker’s track-use procedure.

How long do carbon-ceramic brake discs last on track?
There is no dependable universal lifespan for a carbon-ceramic disc used on track. Brembo’s September 10, 2024 estimate for its CCM discs illustrates how strongly the use context can matter: it gives approximately 150,000 km for road use and 2,000 km in extreme track use, citing Ferrari Challenge as an example of extreme use. These are Brembo estimates for its product and stated contexts—not a prediction, warranty, or replacement interval for every car or driver.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Use context | Brembo’s approximate CCM disc life estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Road use | 150,000 km | An approximate manufacturer estimate for Brembo CCM discs in road use; not a guarantee for another product or vehicle. |
| Extreme track use | 2,000 km | An approximate manufacturer estimate for Brembo CCM discs in extreme track use; Ferrari Challenge is given as an example. It is not a general track-driving replacement threshold. |
The figures come from Brembo’s 2024 CCM material and aftermarket information. Do not use the road-use estimate to predict track life or apply the extreme-track estimate as a service interval for a different brake system. Ask a qualified technician to inspect the actual discs using the applicable model-specific criteria; the cited sources do not establish a general disc replacement threshold.
Track mileage is only one part of the context. The meaning of “extreme track use” in Brembo’s statement should not be silently transferred to a short, moderate track day, a different circuit, or another manufacturer’s disc. Keep service records, but let the specified inspection measurement—not an internet mileage number—determine whether parts remain usable.
Are road-car carbon-ceramic brakes the same as pure carbon racing brakes?
No. Brembo distinguishes road-car ceramic-composite material from pure carbon racing discs. Its explanation says pure carbon racing discs require high temperature to work properly, whereas road-car ceramic composite material was developed to provide useful braking across varied conditions. A driver should not apply a pure-carbon racing system’s operating assumptions to road-car carbon-ceramic brakes. Brembo’s discussion is at The Innovation of Carbon-Ceramic Discs.
That distinction affects advice about warm-up, cooldown, and replacement. A racing component’s temperature-dependent behavior does not supply a target for a road car, and a road-car disc’s road-use capability does not make it a pure racing disc. Identify the actual system before relying on any technical instruction.
Weight-saving figures are also system- and comparison-specific. Brembo stated in 2024 that its CCM discs are 50% lighter than cast-iron discs. Porsche says PCCB can reduce disc weight by around 50% and total vehicle weight by approximately 20 kg compared with cast-iron brakes, depending on model. These manufacturer claims refer to their respective products and comparisons; they do not establish a universal weight saving for every car. See the linked Brembo 2024 CCM overview and Porsche PCCB explanation.
What can a carbon-ceramic track setup cost?
There is no defensible single price for inspection, pads, discs, fluid, or an alternative brake setup. Costs depend on the vehicle, brake option, approved parts, labor procedure, availability, and the amount of track wear. The manufacturer material cited here does not provide a universal cost comparison.

Ask a dealer or specialist for an itemized estimate that separates inspection labor, fluid service, pad replacement, disc replacement, bedding work, and any required sensors or hardware. Compare estimates only after confirming that each quote covers compatible parts and the same inspection standard. A cheaper generic pad or an unverified disc is not an equivalent alternative to a vehicle-approved component.
When comparing continued carbon-ceramic use with another setup, include both immediate purchase price and the expected inspection and replacement needs for the specific event schedule. Brembo’s large difference between its approximate road and extreme-track life estimates shows why a road-use cost assumption can be misleading, but it does not calculate an individual driver’s cost.

Should I keep tracking on carbon-ceramic brakes or change the setup?
The available manufacturer information does not support a universal recommendation to keep or replace carbon-ceramic brakes for track use. Make the decision for the specific car, event, and expected use with a qualified technician. The comparison is not just disc material: the full disc-and-pad pairing, inspection needs, approved use, and replacement implications all matter.
- Manufacturer approval: Check whether track use and the proposed configuration are permitted for the vehicle and brake option.
- Matched components: Confirm compatibility of discs and pads, along with the required bedding and service procedures.
- Driving and event demands: Consider how the car will be used and whether that use resembles the manufacturer’s stated context. Brembo’s estimate for extreme track use shows why road-use life figures should not be carried over to track use.
- Inspection and replacement: Discuss the correct inspection criteria, parts availability, and likely maintenance needs with a specialist. The cited evidence does not provide a universal cost comparison or a general service-life threshold.
- Road requirements: If the car also drives on public roads, verify that the chosen configuration remains appropriate for the vehicle’s road-use requirements.
- Event rules: Confirm that any proposed change complies with the organizer’s requirements and does not remove equipment required for road operation.
For any alternative setup, confirm vehicle-specific approval and compatibility before changing parts. Neither a generic pad substitution nor a broad material comparison can establish that a different setup is right for an individual car.
When should I stop and have the brakes inspected?
Stop using the car on track if a brake warning appears, pedal feel is abnormal, braking performance changes unexpectedly, or you suspect damage. Arrange assessment by an authorized dealer or brake specialist who knows the car’s brake system. This is a cautious action rule, not a claim that one symptom proves a particular component has failed.
For inspection, fluid service, pad selection, and disc replacement decisions, use the correct owner’s manual or workshop procedure. The manufacturer material cited here does not set one cross-model temperature limit, cooldown schedule, or replacement measurement. Those details must come from the instructions and service method for the exact brake system.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a generic bedding routine: Bedding is part of the friction-material installation procedure. Follow the instructions for the actual pad and disc combination.
- Choosing by the word “ceramic” alone: A product label does not establish carbon-ceramic-disc compatibility or track suitability.
- Applying another car’s temperature number: No universal target is established for all road-car systems.
- Treating a mileage estimate as a replacement limit: Brembo’s figures are product- and context-specific estimates, not a cross-model service interval.
- Assuming rapid cooling eliminates inspection: Brembo’s description of rapid cooling and Porsche’s cooling-channel design do not replace the vehicle’s inspection procedure.
- Ignoring road use after a track modification: Confirm that the complete setup still meets the maker’s road-use requirements.
- Diagnosing from appearance alone: Have a qualified technician apply the correct measurement and replacement criteria.
