Keep Android, your banking app, and Google Play Protect up to date; install the bank app only from its verified official listing; review powerful app permissions; and secure the phone with a strong screen lock. These layers reduce risk but cannot guarantee that a device or account is safe. If you suspect malware or see an unrecognized transaction, stop using that phone for banking and contact your bank through a known official channel.
Secure your Android phone with this checklist
- Keep Google Play Protect enabled. Open Play Store → profile icon → Play Protect and confirm scanning is on. Run a scan if something seems wrong. Menu wording may vary by Android version. Play Protect checks apps and periodically scans installed apps; it can warn about, disable, or remove apps it identifies as harmful. It can also scan apps installed from outside Google Play, but it is not a guarantee against every threat. Google explains how Play Protect works.
- Install the real bank app. When in doubt, reach the app listing from the bank’s official website and check the publisher name before installing. Avoid APK downloads and unexpected installation links in texts, emails, social media messages, or calls. Do not follow instructions to disable protections or install an “urgent security update.” Google’s Android security guidance recommends using trusted sources for apps.
- Review sensitive permissions. Check which apps can use Accessibility, read SMS, access notifications, or act as device administrators. Revoke access from apps that do not have a clear, legitimate need for it, and remove apps you do not recognize or no longer use. Settings paths vary by device; search Settings for the permission name if you cannot find it. Google identifies SMS, notification-listener, and Accessibility access as high-risk when an app lacks a legitimate reason for them. Accessibility access can let an app control device actions or expose financial information. Google’s policy guidance describes these sensitive permissions.
- Install phone and app updates. Turn on automatic Android updates where available and install security updates when offered. Update the banking app promptly through its official store listing. Operating-system updates often include important security fixes, according to the FTC’s phone-security guidance. If your phone no longer receives security updates, ask its manufacturer or carrier what supported update options remain.
- Make physical access harder. Set a strong PIN or password, enable automatic screen locking, and learn how to locate, lock, or erase a missing phone. Never share your unlock code with a caller or someone claiming to be bank support. The Google account guidance for a lost or stolen device explains available recovery controls.
- Choose your connection thoughtfully. When convenient, use a trusted cellular connection for sensitive banking activity. Public Wi-Fi is not automatically unsafe: the FTC notes that encryption is widespread, but it can be difficult to tell whether an app encrypts its connection. The FBI’s online safety guidance advises against public or unsecured Wi-Fi. A trusted connection is a prudent choice when one is readily available.
Why these layers matter
Banking threats can target login details and financial information, not just the phone itself. Google’s Play policy states: “Common targets of phishing include banking credentials, credit card numbers, and online account credentials for social networks and games.” That policy statement explains why an unexpected login or installation prompt deserves caution.
Google reported that Play Protect’s real-time scanning identified more than 27 million new malicious applications from outside Google Play in 2025. Google also said it scanned over 350 billion Android apps daily in 2025. These are Google-reported figures about its scanning operation; they do not indicate an individual user’s infection risk or the proportion of banking malware detected. What to do if you suspect a banking Trojan
- Stop banking on the suspect phone. Do not enter bank credentials or approve prompts on it while you investigate.
- Contact your bank from a trusted device or known official number. Ask the bank to secure the account and review recent transactions. Do not use phone numbers or links shown in suspicious pop-ups, messages, or calls. Follow the bank’s own instructions for account protection because recovery steps vary by bank.
- Change credentials from a clean, trusted device. Use the bank’s official site or app and follow any additional security steps the bank provides.
- Check the phone for suspicious apps and access. Review recent installs and the sensitive permissions listed above; remove apps you cannot verify and run a Play Protect scan. If the problem persists, seek device-specific support from the manufacturer or carrier.
- Consider a factory reset only with care. A reset may remove some infections, but it erases data and does not, by itself, restore account security. Back up essential personal data and consult the device maker’s guidance before resetting. Use another trusted device for banking while the phone is being assessed.
Is a separate Android security app necessary?
Android includes Play Protect, so the official guidance does not establish that every banking user needs a paid antivirus app or that a particular product is superior. If you consider optional security software, check whether it supports your Android version and device, what malware and phishing protections the vendor actually documents, how it handles personal data, and its cost and renewal terms. Do not disable Play Protect to install another scanner. Features such as Google’s newer financial-call protections address call spoofing, not malware generally, and may depend on supported devices, enrollment, or participation by a financial institution.
