Turn the computer off immediately, disconnect the charger and every other power source, and stop pressing keys. Blot liquid from the outside with a soft, lint-free cloth, then follow the exact make-and-model instructions for positioning and drying. Do not restart the computer to test it, use a hair dryer or heater, blow compressed air into it, or put it in rice. Coffee can leave conductive or corrosive residue after the water evaporates, so a machine that powers on later is not necessarily safe.
What to do in the first minute
Every second that power is applied to a wet circuit increases the chance of a short circuit. Lenovo’s user guide puts the principle plainly: “The more quickly you stop the current from passing through the computer the more likely you will reduce damage from short circuits.” That is a risk-reduction statement, not a guarantee that a rapid shutdown will prevent damage.
- Stop typing and shut down. Use the normal operating-system shutdown only if it happens immediately. If the keyboard is not responding, hold the computer’s power button long enough to force it off according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not spend time saving work.
- Disconnect the charger. Unplug the wall adapter and remove any other external power, such as a dock, monitor cable that supplies power, or USB-powered accessory.
- Disconnect a separate keyboard. If the spill was on a detachable USB or wireless keyboard, unplug its cable or remove its batteries where the keyboard’s instructions allow. A wireless keyboard may still contain a battery even when it is not connected to a computer.
- Remove easy-to-detach accessories. Take out a removable USB drive, memory card, or other accessory only if doing so does not require turning the wet computer on. Do not probe ports with a cloth, paper, cotton swab, or tool.
- Blot exposed surfaces. Use a soft microfiber or other lint-free cloth. Press gently on the palm rest, key surfaces, and outside of the chassis. Do not rub liquid farther between keys, push material into openings, or spray anything onto the computer.
Do not keep using the computer to finish a call, copy files, or check whether the keys work. An immediate shutdown may cost unsaved work, but continuing to operate a wet machine can turn a limited spill into board-level damage.

Position the computer according to its own manual
There is no universal “spill position” for every laptop or keyboard computer. Chassis design, drainage channels, battery location, and ventilation openings differ.

Because the manufacturer directions conflict, do not present tilting, opening the lid flat, or turning the machine upside down as a universal rule. If you cannot find model-specific instructions, keep the device powered off, blot the exterior, avoid aggressive movement, and obtain advice from the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider.
Drying time: what “dry” really means
Dell advises at least 24–48 hours of thorough drying. Lenovo says to wait until all liquid is dry without setting one fixed interval. Those are manufacturer instructions, not laboratory proof that a coffee spill is harmless after a timer expires. Liquid trapped under a keyboard, shield, connector, or battery can remain after the outside feels dry.
Leave the computer disconnected and powered off in a clean, dry, room-temperature location with ordinary airflow. Do not repeatedly check it during the drying period. If coffee entered a port, ran beneath the keyboard, or reached a vent, the safest course is professional inspection rather than relying on a minimum number of hours.
Apple’s “at least a day” advice applies to a liquid-detection alert in a USB-C port on specified Mac models. It should not be treated as a universal keyboard-spill interval for every laptop.
Shortcuts that can make the damage worse
- No external heat: Do not use a hair dryer, heat gun, radiator, or space heater. Heat can deform key mechanisms, soften adhesives, stress batteries, and drive moisture deeper into the chassis.
- No compressed air: A strong jet can push coffee under the keyboard or into connectors. Apple specifically advises against using compressed air to dry a wet Mac.
- No rice: Rice does not draw liquid out of internal electronics and can shed particles into openings. Apple advises not putting a wet Mac in rice.
- No liquid poured into the keys: Do not flood the keyboard with water, alcohol, contact cleaner, or another solvent in an attempt to rinse it.
- No power-on tests: A single successful boot does not prove that residue or corrosion is absent. Each test applies power to components that may still be contaminated.
Why coffee is more troublesome than clean water
Water can evaporate while leaving comparatively little solid material. Coffee may contain dissolved compounds that remain on contacts and circuit boards. Intel has described coffee as a residue-based spill for that reason. The practical implication is important: waiting for visible moisture to disappear may not remove what the coffee left behind.
Residue can create intermittent key presses, a stuck key, charging problems, unexpected shutdowns, corrosion, or a delayed failure. Sugar, milk, cream, and flavored additives increase the amount of material left behind. Do not assume that a small, black-coffee splash is harmless or that a large spill is the only one worth servicing.

How to tell whether coffee probably entered the chassis
Assume internal exposure when liquid ran between keycaps, appeared at a USB or charging port, emerged from a vent or seam, reached the underside, or pooled near the hinge. A sticky key or tacky palm rest can also indicate that residue is still present, even if no liquid is visible. The absence of a mark proves only that you cannot see liquid; it does not rule out contamination beneath the keyboard.

Clean only what you can safely reach
Exterior surfaces
After power is disconnected, use a soft, slightly damp lint-free cloth to wipe accessible exterior surfaces. Apple’s cleaning guidance says to keep moisture out of openings and never spray cleaner directly onto the computer. A cloth moistened with 70% isopropyl alcohol is permitted in Apple’s guidance for certain stubborn external smudges or fingerprints; that is an exterior-cleaning instruction, not permission to pour alcohol through the keys or wash an internal circuit board.
Keep the cloth barely damp, not wet. Work around—not into—ports, speakers, vents, seams, and the gap beneath keycaps. Do not remove keycaps unless the exact keyboard manufacturer documents that procedure; scissor mechanisms and stabilizers can break easily.
Detachable keyboards
Follow the keyboard maker’s cleaning and disassembly instructions. Disconnect the keyboard from its computer or power before wiping it. If coffee traveled inside the keyboard, replacing the keyboard may be more practical than opening it, but inspect the connector and the computer’s USB port for visible contamination before reconnecting anything.
When internal cleaning is needed
If liquid passed through the key gaps, appeared from a port, reached the underside, or caused any abnormal behavior, stop at exterior blotting. Internal cleaning often requires controlled disassembly, battery isolation, residue removal, and inspection under magnification. A qualified repair provider can determine whether cleaning, a keyboard replacement, a board repair, or data recovery is appropriate.
What not to do while deciding on service
Do not open the chassis simply to look for a spill unless the manufacturer’s procedure authorizes it and you understand the battery and warranty implications. Do not scrape residue from a connector, lift a battery, or rinse a circuit board based on a generic online tip. Ask the manufacturer or repair provider what steps are safe for the exact model. Keep the computer off and disconnected while arranging that advice.

If the device contains irreplaceable files, tell the provider that data preservation is a priority. A technician may recommend a controlled inspection or data-recovery process rather than repeated boot attempts. Do not assume that a repair quote based on a keyboard alone includes liquid cleaning or board inspection; ask what the quoted service covers.
What to do after the drying period
Only proceed when the manufacturer’s instructions indicate that the device is thoroughly dry and no internal exposure requires earlier service. Reconnect the charger only after that point.

- Inspect before powering on. Look for dampness, tacky residue, discoloration, a swollen battery, a damaged cable, or liquid marks around ports. If you see any of these, do not power on; arrange service.
- Attempt one controlled startup. Keep the computer on a nonflammable surface and disconnect unnecessary peripherals. If it does not start normally, stop trying rather than cycling the power.
- Check basic functions without stress-testing. Observe whether the display, keyboard, trackpad, charging indicator, and operating system behave normally. Do not run demanding workloads to “prove” reliability.
- Back up important data immediately if it starts. Use a trusted external drive or cloud destination. A delayed failure is possible even when the first boot looks normal.
- Shut it down and seek advice if anything is abnormal. Dead or repeating keys, random shutdowns, failure to charge, flickering, unusual heat, a burning smell, liquid-detection warnings, or ports that no longer work all justify professional inspection.
If the computer powers on once and then fails, do not keep retrying. Tell the technician what was spilled, approximately how much, where it landed, whether it contained milk or sugar, and how long the computer remained powered.
Choosing a repair path
The right option depends on the exact make and model, the spill route, the computer’s warranty status, and what happens after the manufacturer’s drying instructions. There is no comparable success-rate study that can predict the outcome from the spill size alone.

A manufacturer service center may have model-specific parts, drainage information, and diagnostic procedures. A reputable local repair provider may be faster or less expensive. Avoid any provider that promises recovery solely because the computer still powers on.
When comparing quotes, describe the same facts to each provider: exact model, spill location, coffee ingredients, whether power was connected, and current symptoms. Compare the scope of inspection and the repair warranty, not an unsupported promise of success. If a provider cannot explain whether liquid cleaning, keyboard replacement, or board inspection is included, request clarification before authorizing work.

Warranty and accidental-damage coverage
Liquid damage is commonly treated differently from a manufacturing defect. Apple’s US support information states that liquid exposure is not covered by its one-year limited warranty or AppleCare Protection Plan. Can I use rubbing alcohol, a hair dryer, or rice?
