Turn the player off, disconnect every cable, and place it on a clean, soft cloth. Remove loose dust with a manual blower or controlled electronics air duster, then wipe with a clean, high-pile microfiber or eyeglass cloth using almost no pressure. If grime remains, use only the mild detergent method allowed by the exact model manual, applied to the cloth rather than the player. Do not use alcohol, naphtha, paint thinner, abrasive polishes, or direct sprays on the gold-plated exterior.
That conservative process matters because gold plating is a delicate surface, not a solid-gold shell. Sony warns that gold-plated parts are more sensitive than regular plated parts and specifically prohibits solvents such as alcohol, naphtha, and paint thinner on the player surface.
Why gold-plated players need a gentler approach
Gold plating provides a luxurious conductive and cosmetic finish, but the plated layer is much thinner and more vulnerable than a piece of solid gold. Strong rubbing can create fine scratches, polish through the finish, or leave a visibly uneven sheen. Sony describes the gold-plated parts on its players as more sensitive than regular plated parts. Its 2022 specifications for the NW-WM1ZM2 state that the chassis uses gold plating with approximately 99.7% gold purity; that figure describes the plating material, not a guarantee of scratch resistance or a specified coating thickness.

Cleaning also involves two different problems that should not be mixed:

- Cosmetic cleaning: removing fingerprints, dust, and surface grime from the chassis, trim, logo, buttons, and other visible plated areas.
- Electrical-contact care: addressing oxidation or contamination on a detachable gold-plated plug or jack when it causes crackling, dropouts, or intermittent sound.
The least aggressive method that solves the observed problem is the right method. A contact treatment that might be appropriate for a removable connector is not automatically safe for the player’s decorative finish or internal electronics.
Prepare the player and work area
Preparation prevents most accidental scratches and liquid damage. Sony recommends working on a tabletop covered with a soft cloth specifically to reduce scratches while handling gold-plated models.
Shut down and isolate the device
- Stop playback and turn the player completely off; do not leave it in sleep mode.
- Disconnect headphones, USB cables, chargers, line-out cables, and removable accessories.
- Remove a protective case only if dirt has collected beneath it and the case can be taken off without dragging grit across the finish.
- Place the player on a clean, lint-free cloth or soft electronics mat. Keep screws, coins, keys, and other metal objects away from the work surface.
Inspect before touching the finish
Use bright, indirect light to identify what you are trying to remove. A loose gray film, fingerprints, and dust call for different treatment from green or dark material on a plug, a damaged coating, or crackling that changes when a cable is moved. If the problem is electrical noise rather than visible dirt, skip exterior polishing and use the connector procedure later in this guide.

Assemble only safe materials
- A clean, high-pile microfiber cloth or eyeglass-cleaning cloth.
- A second clean cloth for drying and handling the player.
- A soft protective mat or folded lint-free cloth for the tabletop.
- A manual camera blower or controlled electronics air duster for loose dust.
- Mild detergent only when the model manual explicitly permits it.
- For a detachable contact problem only, a compatible contact-cleaning product and lint-free swabs, used according to the connector manufacturer’s instructions.
Use a new or freshly laundered cloth. A cloth that contains grit from a previous cleaning can scratch even when its fabric feels soft.
Step-by-step exterior cleaning
1. Remove loose dust without wiping
Blow across the surface with a manual blower or controlled electronics air duster before making contact. The purpose is to lift particles that could otherwise be dragged over the plating. Keep the nozzle from touching the player and avoid forcing air into openings at close range.

2. Make a dry pass with a soft cloth
Fold the microfiber or eyeglass cloth so you have a clean face. Rest it lightly on the surface and move in short, straight passes or small overlapping strokes. Do not press hard, scrub, or repeatedly polish one spot. Sony’s instruction is to clean the player with a soft cloth, such as an eyeglass-cleaning cloth.
3. Work around details without trapping grit
For buttons, logo edges, seams, and trim, use a fresh corner of the cloth and very light contact. Do not use a toothpick, metal tool, brush, or folded paper to chase dirt out of a seam. If debris will not lift with a dry cloth, leave it in place until you have confirmed the model’s approved damp-cleaning method.
4. Use a barely damp cloth only when the manual allows it
For heavier dirt, follow the exact model manual. Sony permits a cloth slightly moistened with mild detergent for a very dirty player. The cloth should be damp, never wet: wring it thoroughly so no drop can run, and apply the detergent to the cloth rather than pouring or spraying it on the device.
Keep the damp cloth away from seams, buttons, card slots, headphone jacks, USB ports, microphone holes, speaker openings, and display edges. Water or detergent entering the player can damage electronics even when the exterior appears dry.
5. Dry immediately and inspect
Make a final pass with a separate dry microfiber cloth. Check the surface from several angles under soft light. Stop as soon as the visible dirt is gone; repeated passes do not improve a clean finish and increase contact wear.

Can you use alcohol on a gold-plated Walkman?
Do not use alcohol on the gold-plated exterior unless the exact manufacturer manual expressly authorizes it. Sony’s model guidance says not to clean with solvents such as alcohol, naphtha, or paint thinner because they may damage the player’s surface. Sony’s consumer care guidance also warns against thinner, benzene, and alcohol solvents.
Some third-party audio instructions discuss isopropyl alcohol for other finishes or for electrical contacts. Those instructions do not override a finish-specific warning from the player manufacturer. Treat the manual for your exact model as controlling, especially when the device has a decorative gold-plated chassis.
Never pour or spray alcohol, detergent, or any other liquid onto the player. Even a chemically compatible liquid can damage the device if it reaches a seam, switch, display edge, connector, or circuit board.
Cleaning detachable gold-plated plugs and jacks
A gold-plated plug can look clean and still produce crackling when its contact surface is contaminated or oxidized. Handle this as an electrical-contact problem, not as an invitation to polish the player’s chassis.
Diagnose the source of the crackle
- Stop playback and lower the amplifier or player volume before disconnecting anything.
- Try a different cable, headphone, or output to determine whether the noise follows the accessory.
- With the system off, inspect the removable plug and the accessible jack for visible grime, discoloration, or mechanical looseness.
- If crackling changes when the plug is moved, the plug, jack, or cable is more suspect than the gold-plated case.
Use a controlled contact treatment only when needed
A specialist audio guide describes isopropyl alcohol for surface grime and CAIG DeoxIT Gold for plated contacts when oxidation contributes to crackling. Compatibility must be checked for the particular connector and product. Apply a minimal amount to a lint-free swab or cloth, never by spraying into the jack or player. Clean the detachable contact, allow it to dry fully, and reconnect only after no liquid remains.

Do not use abrasive erasers, metal tools, or aggressive polishing on the contact. Do not put contact cleaner inside the player unless the manufacturer explicitly authorizes that procedure. If the jack is recessed, loose, or contaminated beyond what can be reached safely, service is safer than flooding it with cleaner.
Re-test without confusing contact noise with software or cable faults
After the contact is completely dry, reconnect the cable and test at low volume. If the crackle remains, test another cable and source before applying more product. Persistent noise can indicate a worn jack, damaged cable conductor, or an internal fault; repeated cleaning will not repair those problems.
What not to use on the gold-plated finish
- Alcohol, naphtha, paint thinner, benzene, and solvent wipes: Sony warns that these can damage the surface.
- Polishing compounds and metal polish: they remove material and can create a brighter patch rather than restoring the original finish.
- Abrasive erasers, melamine sponges, paper towels, rough cotton, and metal brushes: their fibers or abrasive particles can scratch or wear plating.
- Dirty or shared cloths: trapped grit is effectively sandpaper.
- Direct sprays: liquid can run through openings before you can wipe it away.
- Excessive repeated wiping: gold-plated parts should be cleaned gently and infrequently.
Protect the finish between cleanings
Handle by clean edges
Wash and dry your hands before handling the player. Hold it by non-decorative edges where possible, and avoid sliding fingers across the plated face. Skin oils are easier to remove when they are not mixed with dust and grit.
Separate the player from hard objects
Store the player in a soft, clean case or pouch with no loose metal accessories. Do not place keys, coins, tools, or another device on top of it. Keep detachable plugs capped or separated so their metal ends cannot rub against the chassis during transport.

Keep the player away from dusty workbenches, bathrooms, kitchens, and bags containing loose debris. A case protects the finish, but it should itself be clean; wipe or replace a liner that accumulates grit. Never seal a damp player in a case.

Clean only when there is a reason
No authoritative numerical cleaning interval, plating-thickness figure, or scratch-resistance rating is established for these instructions. Inspect the finish periodically and clean when dust or fingerprints are visible, rather than scheduling frequent polishing. Less contact is safer for a sensitive plated surface.
Troubleshooting common cleaning problems
The surface still looks dull after a dry wipe
Stop before increasing pressure. Dullness may be residue, an uneven coating, or wear rather than removable dirt. Confirm the model manual’s approved method; do not escalate to solvent or polish on your own. If the appearance changed after a chemical or abrasive was used, further rubbing can enlarge the damaged area.
You see a new hairline scratch
Do not try to buff it out. Polishing one small area can remove more plating and create a visible bright or dark patch. Photograph the mark, keep the player away from further abrasion, and ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider whether the trim can be replaced.
Liquid entered an opening
Disconnect power and cables immediately, keep the player switched off, and do not test it by turning it back on. Do not blow moisture deeper into the device. Arrange model-specific service, particularly if liquid reached a jack, charging port, card slot, buttons, or display edge.
Crackling continues after connector cleaning
Stop adding cleaner. Test a known-good cable and another output, then check whether the noise follows the cable or remains with the player. A loose jack or internal electronic fault requires service rather than more exterior cleaning.
