You do not need to move your ETH today because of quantum computing. Ethereum’s current user guidance says that no quantum computer today can break Ethereum’s cryptography and that users have no special action to take now. The sensible protection plan is to understand which accounts have exposed public keys, avoid unsupported “quantum-safe” products, monitor official Ethereum and wallet-provider announcements, and migrate through supported software when post-quantum signatures are deployed.
Quantum readiness is a staged protocol change, not a hardware-wallet purchase. A future account migration could protect the ETH, tokens and NFTs held by an account without requiring each asset to be transferred separately, but the migration mechanism and wallet support are not universally available yet.
What a quantum attack would target
Most externally owned Ethereum accounts (EOAs) authorize transactions with ECDSA signatures. The account address is derived from a hash of the public key. A normal computer cannot feasibly recover the private key from that information. A sufficiently capable quantum computer running Shor’s algorithm could attack the elliptic-curve mathematics behind the exposed public key and then create a valid transaction signature.

Why transaction history matters

This distinction does not mean that a dormant account can be ignored. Ethereum’s user guidance says all accounts should eventually move to post-quantum signatures when those options are supported.
Is there a quantum emergency for Ethereum users now?
No. Ethereum’s official user guidance states, “No quantum computer today can break Ethereum’s cryptography,” and, “For now, there is nothing you need to do.” Those statements describe the present state of the technology and the current migration stage; they are not a promise that existing ECDSA accounts will remain safe indefinitely.
Do not treat a countdown posted by a wallet seller, a social-media account or an investment promotion as an Ethereum deadline. Reliable timing depends on advances in quantum hardware, cryptographic review, client implementation, testing and network governance. The public roadmap gives targets rather than guaranteed release dates.
Ethereum’s quantum-readiness timeline and scope
The Ethereum Foundation’s September 7, 2026 protocol priorities set a target of December 2029 for quantum resistance across execution, consensus and data. The Foundation’s security roadmap describes approximately 2029 as the target period for core post-quantum infrastructure milestones. Both are targets that may change, not a promised mainnet activation date.
The Foundation formed a dedicated Post-Quantum Security team in January 2026. Its roadmap describes work on hash-based validator signatures, signature aggregation and interoperability devnets. It also lists native account abstraction through EIP-8141 as under consideration for the Hegotá upgrade. These entries show active planning and engineering; they do not prove that a universal quantum-safe wallet migration is deployed.

The four technical work areas

The Foundation’s Post-Quantum Ethereum program describes the overall strategy as cryptographic agility: replacing vulnerable primitives in stages while preserving security and decentralization. That is broader than protecting one seed phrase or one device.
What to do with your wallet today
- Keep your existing wallet under normal security controls. Use a reputable wallet, protect the seed phrase offline, enable available security features and verify transaction details. These steps reduce ordinary theft and malware risk; they do not alter the account’s on-chain signature scheme.
- Follow primary announcements. Check Ethereum Foundation and ethereum.org guidance, your wallet provider’s authenticated notices and the release notes for the software you actually use. Confirm that an announcement applies to Ethereum mainnet, not only a testnet or a research demonstration.
- Do not buy a device because it is advertised as quantum-safe. A hardware wallet can keep a private key isolated from a compromised computer, but it does not change an existing Ethereum account from ECDSA to a post-quantum signature scheme. A metal seed-phrase backup has the same limitation: it protects the backup from physical damage, not the cryptography used on-chain.
- Do not rotate accounts just to react to headlines. Creating a new address and transferring assets today does not make the account quantum-resistant. If the new account uses the same vulnerable signature family, it has not solved the future protocol problem.
- Record your account history. Note which EOAs have sent transactions and which have only received assets. This helps you prioritize a later migration, but it is not a substitute for following the eventual wallet instructions.
Is an unused Ethereum wallet safer?
An account that has never sent a transaction has an extra layer of protection because its public key has not been exposed on-chain in the way an outgoing EOA transaction exposes it. Receiving ETH reveals the address, not the unhashed public key. That can reduce the window in which a future quantum attacker could target the account directly.
“Safer” does not mean “safe forever.” The address can still be stolen through a compromised seed phrase, phishing, malware or a faulty backup. More importantly, Ethereum’s guidance expects all accounts to migrate when post-quantum signature support becomes available. A dormant account should be included in that plan rather than left indefinitely on an old scheme.
How a future migration is expected to work
Ethereum’s intended approach is signature agility: an account should be able to select new verification logic as cryptography evolves. Account abstraction is central to that idea because transaction validation can be defined by account logic instead of being permanently tied to one EOA signature format.
Account abstraction is not automatically quantum-safe
ERC-4337 supports smart-contract wallets without changing Ethereum’s core protocol. It can give a wallet programmable validation rules, but an ERC-4337 account is not automatically post-quantum. Its security depends on the signature algorithm and contract code it uses. Ethereum’s quantum roadmap describes EIP-8141 as a future native account-abstraction direction being considered for signature agility; that status is not the same as a deployed feature available to every account.

Proposed key delegation
EIP-8164 discusses native key delegation and ML-DSA, a post-quantum signature scheme. It is a proposal, not evidence that Ethereum mainnet or your wallet supports ML-DSA. Do not import an EIP into a wallet, sign a message or move assets based only on a proposal number; wait for an audited implementation, a network activation and explicit wallet-provider instructions.

When a supported method exists, wallet software is expected to guide users through it. A responsible migration flow would identify the account, explain the new signature scheme, show whether the same account identity and assets are preserved, request an authenticated authorization and provide a recovery path. The exact screens, transaction format, gas cost and seed-compatibility rules are not established today.
- Verify that the notice comes from the wallet provider through its normal authenticated update channel.
- Confirm that the feature is live on Ethereum mainnet and identify the approved post-quantum scheme.
- Read whether the migration preserves the existing account or creates a replacement account that requires transfers.
- Back up any new recovery material using the wallet’s documented process before approving a change.
- Test with a small amount only if the official instructions recommend testing; never follow an unsolicited “migration” link or send funds to an address supplied in a message.
- Keep the old recovery information until the provider documents a safe retirement process and you have verified access to the migrated account.
Will tokens and NFTs need to be moved?
Not necessarily. Ethereum’s user guidance frames the protection around the account’s signature security. If a future migration preserves the account and changes its verification logic, the ETH, ERC-20 tokens, NFTs and other assets controlled by that account should remain associated with it. You should not assume that every asset must be transferred individually.
The opposite case is also possible: a design may require a new smart-contract account or a replacement address. In that situation, the wallet’s official instructions must specify which assets can be moved, what approvals are needed and which contracts impose their own restrictions. Until a migration is actually deployed, no universal transfer procedure or fee can be stated.
What a hardware wallet can and cannot do

Therefore, continue using hardware signing and secure backups if they fit your ordinary custody model, but reject the claim that a physical product by itself makes an existing Ethereum account quantum-resistant.

How to evaluate a future quantum-safe wallet claim
When products or wallet updates eventually appear, compare the technical details rather than the label. The following questions separate a usable migration from a marketing claim.

| What are the costs? | Transaction size, gas consumption, signature aggregation requirements and recurring service fees, if any. |
| What protocol dependency exists? | Whether an Ethereum upgrade, a contract deployment or a wallet-specific relay is required. |
No current user-facing quantum-safe wallet option is established by the official material described above. Treat any present-day product claim as unverified unless it answers these questions and is backed by an activated Ethereum-compatible implementation.

A credible breakthrough would not automatically mean that every account can be drained immediately. The practical risk would depend on the machine’s capabilities, whether it can derive keys quickly enough, which public keys are exposed, network response time and the availability of an approved migration path.
- Stop signing from exposed accounts unless an official emergency procedure says otherwise.
- Use only authenticated Ethereum and wallet-provider channels; phishing campaigns are likely during a crisis.
- Do not install an emergency wallet from a message, browser advertisement or unknown repository.
- Check whether the Ethereum Foundation, client teams and your wallet provider have published coordinated instructions.
- Preserve transaction records and recovery material while following the documented migration or defense procedure.
Ethereum’s roadmap includes emergency preparedness, but dormant-account policy and the treatment of owners who do not migrate remain governance questions. No settled rule currently guarantees that an inactive account will be handled in a particular way.

Can a quantum computer steal my ETH today?
No known quantum computer can break Ethereum’s cryptography today, according to Ethereum’s current user guidance. The risk is a future capability, not a present-day theft method.

Do I need to move my ETH to a new wallet now?
No. There is no universal quantum-safe mainnet migration flow established today. Moving funds to another ordinary ECDSA account would not solve the underlying issue.
Is an unused Ethereum wallet safer?
It has not exposed its public key through an outgoing EOA transaction, which provides additional protection. It still needs eventual migration and remains vulnerable to ordinary key-custody failures.
Will my NFTs and tokens need to be moved?
Only if the final migration design requires a replacement account. An account-preserving change should protect assets held by that account without individual transfers; the deployed wallet instructions will determine which case applies.
Is a hardware wallet quantum-safe?
No. It can protect private keys from many conventional attacks, but it does not change the on-chain signature algorithm of an existing Ethereum account.
When will Ethereum support quantum-resistant signatures?
The Ethereum Foundation’s September 2026 priorities target December 2029 for quantum resistance across execution, consensus and data, while its roadmap places core infrastructure milestones around 2029. These are targets, not guaranteed dates, and user-facing wallet support may arrive in stages.
