A sandwich attack occurs when a searcher places one transaction before your Ethereum decentralized-exchange swap and another immediately after it. The first trade moves the pool price, your swap executes at a worse rate, and the attacker sells into the price movement you helped create. You can reduce this risk by keeping slippage tolerance narrow but executable, using private submission or intent-based execution when available, and choosing sufficiently liquid routes. None of these measures is a universal guarantee.
For developers, the essential control is an output bound: pass a meaningful amountOutMinimum or enforce a suitable on-chain oracle limit. A contract that accepts any output, including zero, gives price manipulators an unusually large execution range.
What a sandwich attack does to your swap
Most Ethereum swaps on automated market makers are submitted as transactions that wait to be included in a block. Before inclusion, pending transactions may be visible in a public mempool. Searchers monitor that flow for trades large enough to move a pool’s price.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Front-run: the searcher buys the asset you are trying to buy, moving the pool price against your order.
- Your swap executes: the pool now offers you a less favorable rate. Your transaction still obeys the slippage limit you specified, so it can settle successfully while delivering fewer tokens than the original quote.
- Back-run: the searcher sells the asset after your trade has pushed the price further, capturing the difference after fees and gas.
This is transaction-ordering exploitation, not a private-key compromise. The attacker does not need to log in to your wallet or steal its seed phrase. The loss appears as increased price impact and worse execution. Ethereum.org summarizes the user effect plainly: “Users who are sandwiched face increased slippage and worse execution.” Read its overview of the mechanism at Ethereum.org’s MEV documentation.

A sandwich is most attractive when your trade is visible, your order is large relative to the pool, and your allowed slippage gives the attacker room to profit. A private transaction path can reduce visibility, while a deeper pool can reduce how far any single trade moves the price. Both are risk reductions rather than promises that every swap will be optimal.
Set slippage so a legitimate trade can fill without giving away excess room
Slippage tolerance is the maximum deterioration from the quoted execution that your swap accepts. The interface or contract normally converts that tolerance into a minimum amount of output tokens. If the market moves beyond the bound before inclusion, the transaction reverts instead of filling at a worse rate.
Why a wide tolerance helps a sandwich attacker
Suppose an interface quotes an output of 1,000 units and you permit a 1% decline. The transaction can accept as little as 990 units. A searcher can try to move the pool price toward that floor with a front-running trade, provided the expected profit exceeds gas, fees and execution risk. A wider floor gives the searcher a broader profitable band.
Why an ultra-tight tolerance can fail
Block-by-block price changes, competing trades and a volatile market can make a narrow bound unrealistic. The swap may revert with an error such as “slippage,” “insufficient output,” or “transaction may fail.” A failed swap generally does not transfer the swap tokens, but the submitted transaction can still consume gas if it is included and reverts.
A practical adjustment method
- Start with the smallest tolerance that the interface and current market conditions can execute. Do not copy a universal percentage from a guide; the appropriate value depends on the pair, trade size, route, volatility and block delay.
- Review the quoted output, price impact and route before signing. Treat a large price-impact warning as a reason to reduce trade size, split the order or find deeper liquidity, not merely as a reason to increase tolerance.
- If the transaction repeatedly fails while the quote is otherwise acceptable, increase the tolerance in a small increment and reassess the resulting minimum output. If the new floor is materially worse than you can accept, wait for calmer conditions or use a different route.
- After changing the setting, verify the minimum output shown in the confirmation screen. A percentage alone is not enough when the interface applies additional route or fee calculations.
The goal is a bound that is strict enough to reject an unacceptable execution and loose enough to survive ordinary market movement. There is no evidence for one percentage that is safe for every Ethereum swap.

Use a transaction path that limits public-mempool exposure
Private routing
Private routing sends the transaction to a private order-flow or relay path instead of broadcasting it to the public mempool. Searchers that rely on public visibility then have less opportunity to copy your pending swap and place the two legs of a sandwich.
Uniswap’s guide, published October 24, 2025, describes private pools as a way to keep trades from being broadcast publicly. It also states that swap protection in Uniswap Wallet is enabled for Ethereum Mainnet transactions. That statement is specific to the named wallet and network; coverage can differ by chain, wallet version and transaction type. Check the current feature description at Uniswap’s MEV-protection guide before relying on it.
Private submission does not make the trade risk-free. A transaction can still experience price movement, a failed route, validator or builder behavior, or leakage at another stage of execution. Confirm which network is covered and whether the protection applies to the exact swap flow you are using.
Intent-based execution
In an intent-based design, you sign what you want to achieve—such as exchanging one token for another under stated limits—rather than sending a conventional swap directly to a public pool transaction. Uniswap describes UniswapX as sending a swap intent to a private network of fillers that compete to execute it.
This changes who receives the order and how execution is assembled. It may reduce public-mempool exposure and can use different liquidity sources, but it does not guarantee a better price in every market. Compare the quoted output, fees, route, deadline and stated protections with a standard swap before approving.

Choose liquidity and route, not just the headline quote
Pool depth determines how much the marginal price changes when your trade enters an automated market maker. A deeper pool generally absorbs a given trade with less price movement. A shallow pool can move substantially even for a modest order, making it more attractive to a sandwich searcher and increasing your own price impact.
Recommended Free Tools
When two routes support the same assets and appear otherwise suitable, compare:
- Expected execution: the output after price impact and all stated fees, not just the spot price.
- Liquidity depth: whether the pool can absorb your order without a sharp curve movement.
- Route: the pools and intermediary tokens involved; additional hops can add fees, gas and failure points.
- Slippage bound: the minimum output or maximum input that the transaction enforces.
- Submission method: public broadcast, private routing or an intent-based path.
- Fee structure: pool fees, interface fees, gas and any solver or filler charge shown by the execution path.
Uniswap identifies low-liquidity pools as prime MEV targets because relatively small trades can swing their prices. That does not mean the pool with the most liquidity always wins: a route with deeper liquidity can have higher fees or a longer path. Evaluate the complete execution rather than choosing on liquidity alone.
Compare common Ethereum swap choices
| Choice | What is exposed | Primary trade-off | Questions to ask before signing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public standard swap | The pending transaction is visible to public-mempool searchers. | Usually familiar and broadly available, but easier for a searcher to observe and order around. | Is the pool deep enough? Is the minimum output strict? Is the expected price impact acceptable? |
| Private standard swap | The transaction is sent through a private path rather than ordinary public broadcast. | Less public visibility, but protection depends on the wallet, network and relay implementation. | Which network and swap types are covered? What happens if private delivery fails? |
| Intent-based execution | A signed swap intent is delivered to a private filler or solver network. | Execution can use different liquidity and ordering, but outcomes vary by market and filler competition. | What output, deadline, fees and fallback behavior are specified? |
| Shallow-liquidity route | The order can move the pool price significantly. | Potentially convenient or available for unusual tokens, but higher price impact and MEV exposure. | Can you split the order or use a deeper pool? |
| Deep-liquidity route | The same order normally causes less pool-price movement. | May involve different fees, intermediary assets or gas costs. | Does the all-in output remain better after fees and route complexity? |
Available public sources do not establish a controlled performance ranking among providers or execution systems. Treat private routing, intent execution and liquidity as separate dimensions to evaluate for each swap.
Protect smart-contract integrations
If you are building a contract, aggregator, treasury script or recurring swap, the user interface’s setting is not a substitute for a contract-level bound. The contract must reject execution that returns less than the caller accepts.

Enforce a meaningful minimum output
For an exact-input swap, pass a calculated amountOutMinimum based on a fresh quote, an approved tolerance and the route you intend to use. Do not hard-code zero merely to avoid failed transactions. Uniswap Developers states: “Setting this to zero makes your contract vulnerable to sandwich attacks and price manipulation.” See the Trading Overview for the documented warning and parameter context.
The minimum should be computed close to submission time and carried through every hop. If an off-chain service supplies the quote, authenticate the response, constrain its age and handle stale data. A bound that is calculated once and reused indefinitely can be as dangerous as no bound when prices move.
Use an appropriate oracle bound when a quote is not enough
For integrations that need a market-relative guard, an on-chain price oracle can provide a reference against which execution is checked. Select an oracle appropriate to the asset pair, update frequency and manipulation assumptions. A single oracle read is not automatically safe: assess liquidity, update timing, decimals, stale answers and the possibility of a manipulated source.
Keep approval and deadline controls separate
- Limit token approvals to the spender and amount your flow requires; an approval limit does not protect the swap price.
- Use a deadline so an old transaction cannot execute hours later after market conditions have changed.
- Emit or log the chosen minimum output, route and deadline so operators can audit failed and successful executions.
- Test both successful fills and deliberate below-minimum-output reverts on a fork or test environment before deployment.
What ERC-8377 proposes for execution-time slippage
ERC-8377, titled “Reference-Relative Slippage Bounds,” proposes a caller-specified slippage policy, a quote oracle and a maximum deviation. Instead of fixing the output floor only from an earlier quote, the contract would read a reference price at execution time and derive an acceptable output floor from that reference.

It does not eliminate MEV, and the cited proposal does not establish broad deployment or universal wallet and router support. Treat it as a design under consideration, not as a feature you can assume is available. Diagnose a failed or unexpectedly expensive swap
The transaction reverted for slippage
Check whether the market moved, another transaction changed the pool, or your route was too shallow for the order size. Re-quote instead of blindly retrying. If the quote remains attractive, make only a small tolerance adjustment and confirm the new minimum output. Repeated failures can indicate volatility or stale routing data.
The swap succeeded but output was close to the minimum
Compare the signed minimum with the actual output and inspect the route and pool price impact. A result near the floor means your bound permitted that execution; it is not proof that the wallet was compromised. For future trades, reduce order size, choose deeper liquidity, improve the route or use private or intent-based submission.
The quote changed before signing
Do not approve a stale confirmation. Refresh the quote, review fees and output, and check that the transaction deadline is still appropriate. A changing quote can be normal in a volatile pool; it is also a reason to avoid widening slippage simply to force inclusion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPrivate protection was unavailable
Confirm the selected network and wallet support the private path. If the transaction falls back to public broadcast, reassess pool depth, trade size and slippage before signing. Never assume a private setting on one chain applies automatically to another.
A pre-signing checklist
- Confirm the chain is Ethereum Mainnet or the network you intend to use.
- Read the expected output after fees and price impact.
- Inspect the route and prefer deeper liquidity when the all-in result is comparable.
- Set a narrow, workable slippage tolerance and verify the resulting minimum output.
- Use private routing or an intent-based path when the wallet and network clearly support it.
- Check the deadline, gas estimate and any solver, filler or interface fee.
- For contract calls, verify that
amountOutMinimumor an equivalent oracle-based limit is nonzero and meaningful. - Reject a quote you cannot explain; waiting or reducing the order is safer than accepting an unexplained execution range.
What protection can and cannot promise
Sandwich risk is reduced when an attacker cannot easily see the order, cannot move the price far enough to reach your permitted band, or cannot profit after fees and gas. Private routing, intent execution, deeper liquidity and strict output limits address different parts of that problem. They do not guarantee a favorable price, prevent every form of MEV, or remove ordinary market risk. As Uniswap’s October 2025 guide puts it, “While no single tactic can get rid of malicious MEV forever, these tools and settings help you keep more value in your swaps.”
