The most effective protection is simple: use a fitted, non-abrasive cover when the suitcase is checked, remove loose grit before wiping, clean with water and a soft microfiber cloth, dry every surface completely, and keep the case away from salt, standing moisture, rough surfaces, and harsh chemicals. These steps reduce avoidable damage, but they cannot make aluminum luggage mark-proof. Dents, dings, and scratches are normal results of travel, and deep damage usually cannot be polished away.
What can and cannot be prevented
Aluminum luggage is strong, but its visible finish is exposed to conveyor belts, vehicle compartments, concrete floors, metal edges, and other bags. Samsonite describes aluminum luggage as prone to “dents, dings, and scratches over time.” Those marks are cosmetic in many cases; Zero Halliburton notes that ordinary cosmetic marks do not reduce the case’s protective function.
Protection therefore has two goals: prevent unnecessary surface damage and catch functional problems before the next trip. A cover can reduce abrasion and scuffing, while careful cleaning prevents grit from being dragged across the shell. Neither measure can guarantee an unmarked case after repeated checked travel.
- Usually preventable: scratches caused by loose sand or grit, rubbing during storage, residue from salt or dirty water, and many handling scuffs.
- Often reducible but not guaranteed: dents from impacts, corner deformation, and deep scratches from baggage equipment.
- Not reversible with cleaning: scratches through the finish, creases, punctures, and deep dents that alter the shell or frame.
The best protection strategy before travel
Use a fitted cover for checked luggage
A stretch cover made for the suitcase’s dimensions is the clearest preventive purchase. FORTE’s care guidance says to use its scratch-protection cover when checking luggage, and Xiaomi recommends a protective cover, particularly for check-in. Choose a cover that fits tightly enough not to catch on conveyor equipment but does not compress the shell.

Before buying, verify that the cover has openings or reinforced access for every feature you need during travel. A cover that blocks a wheel, handle, latch, or TSA lock can create more handling problems than it solves. Confirm the manufacturer’s size chart against the case’s external dimensions, including wheels and corner hardware.
| Cover characteristic | Why it matters | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Correct model and dimensions | Prevents loose fabric from dragging and keeps the shell covered. | Measure the complete case and compare with the maker’s chart. |
| Soft, non-abrasive lining | Stops the cover itself from rubbing the finish. | Run a hand over seams, zippers, and internal panels for rough edges. |
| Wheel and handle access | Maintains maneuverability and avoids lifting the bag by the cover. | Check that wheels turn freely and handles extend fully. |
| Latch and lock access | Allows security inspection and normal opening. | Use openings that do not force the fabric against the latch. |
| Washability and drying | A dirty cover can transfer grit or moisture back to the case. | Follow the cover maker’s wash instructions and dry it completely. |
| Intended use | Some covers are for storage rather than baggage handling. | Confirm that the cover is explicitly suitable for checked travel. |
Keep the case away from abrasion and impact points
When you are packing or waiting to check the bag, avoid unfinished wood, rough concrete, exposed metal edges, and abrasive cargo surfaces. Do not stack heavy items on the lid or place the suitcase where a sharp corner can press into the shell. Put straps, buckles, and hard accessories inside the case or in a soft pouch so they cannot strike the aluminum.
Do not add an unapproved coating
Resist the temptation to spray the shell with a generic waterproofing product, solvent, polish, or “protective” coating. Globe-Trotter specifically warns against solvents and waterproof sprays. A product that is safe for fabric or leather may stain, soften, or chemically attack an anodized aluminum finish. Use only a product that the suitcase manufacturer explicitly permits.
After-trip cleaning routine
Clean the case after every trip, even when the marks appear minor. The order matters: remove dry particles before introducing a cloth, then wash gently, rinse where necessary, and dry every joint.
- Empty and open the case. Remove clothing, packing cubes, and debris so you can inspect the shell and interior separately.
- Inspect high-risk areas. Look at frame edges, corners, wheel housings, the underside, latches, hinges, and telescoping-handle channels. Note anything that is bent, loose, cracked, or difficult to operate.
- Lift off loose grit. Shake or brush away visible sand and dust without rubbing them across the finish. Grit trapped under a cloth can create new scratches.
- Wipe with clean water. Use a soft microfiber cloth or a non-abrasive sponge dampened with clean water. Work in small sections with light pressure.
- Add mild soap only when needed. For persistent dirt, use a small amount of mild soap diluted as directed by the suitcase maker. Do not flood the frame, lock, wheel bearings, or electrical components, if present.
- Remove residue. Wipe again with clean water so soap does not dry into a film or attract dust.
- Dry completely. Use a fresh soft cloth on the shell, frame, hardware, wheel areas, and seams. Leave the case open until all retained moisture has evaporated.
- Rinse salt or sand exposure. If the case encountered seawater, road salt, beach sand, or salty slush, follow the manufacturer’s direction to rinse affected parts with fresh water, then dry immediately and thoroughly.
- Clean the cover separately. Do not reinstall a damp or gritty cover on a clean suitcase.
Portar, FORTE, RIMOWA, and Zero Halliburton all converge on the same principle: a soft damp cloth or sponge and mild, non-abrasive cleaning are safer than aggressive scrubbing. Water spots and retained moisture are easier to prevent than to remove after they dry around seams and hardware.

How anodizing affects protection
Anodizing is an electrochemical surface treatment that increases the thickness and density of aluminum’s natural oxide film. The FAA identifies anodizing as the most common surface treatment for aluminum-alloy surfaces. This harder oxide layer improves resistance to ordinary environmental exposure, but it is still a finish, not armor.
Severe abrasives can break the anodized film. Once the finish is cut, polishing may create a visibly different sheen or a larger bright patch rather than restoring the original appearance. Cleaning should therefore aim to remove contamination, not to level the metal.

Anodized versus non-anodized appearance
Manufacturers use different surface treatments, colors, and brushed or polished textures. Follow the care instructions for your exact model instead of assuming that a product safe on one aluminum case is safe on another. A darker or brushed finish can show a repair area more clearly than a plain silver surface.
Products and tools: what is safe to try
| Item | Appropriate use | Limits and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| Clean water | First choice for dust, fingerprints, and light residue. | Use a clean supply; dry the case afterward. |
| Soft microfiber cloth | General wiping and final drying. | Wash it so embedded grit does not become an abrasive. |
| Non-abrasive sponge | Stubborn dirt on broad shell areas. | Do not use a scouring side or heavy pressure. |
| Mild soap | Persistent grime when water alone is insufficient. | Use sparingly, rinse residue, and confirm compatibility in the care guide. |
| Soft dust bag or cloth cover | Dry, ventilated storage and protection from rubbing. | Never enclose a damp suitcase. |
| Silica-free mild polishing wax | Only where the suitcase maker explicitly permits it; Zero Halliburton mentions this option. | Do not generalize permission to other brands or finishes. |
Test any permitted cleaner on a hidden area first. Stop if the color, gloss, texture, or cloth changes. Manufacturer instructions take precedence over general aluminum-cleaning advice.

Choose a dry, ventilated location
Store the clean, dry suitcase upright in a cool, low-humidity area with air circulation. Leave space between it and walls, shelving, or other luggage so surfaces do not rub. A dust bag or soft cloth cover keeps particles off the shell while allowing you to inspect the case periodically.
Keep away from prolonged heat and sunlight
Long periods of direct heat or sunlight can warm the shell, fade colored finishes, and accelerate deterioration of nearby plastics, adhesives, and lining materials. Do not store the case in a damp basement, a wet garage corner, or a sealed container while any moisture remains.
Store the cover dry as well
Wash or shake out the cover after a dirty trip and let it dry fully before placing it on the suitcase. A damp cover can hold salt and grit against the aluminum, defeating its purpose.
Diagnosing scratches, dents, and corrosion
Surface dirt or transfer marks
Start with clean water and a soft cloth. If the mark disappears without pressure, it was contamination rather than a damaged finish. Do not escalate to abrasive polishing merely because a water mark remains after the first pass; rinse with clean water and dry with a fresh cloth.

Light scuffs
Use the same gentle method and stop if rubbing makes the mark larger, brighter, or more noticeable. A scuff that has changed the surface texture is no longer a cleaning problem. Aggressive buffing can create a patch that contrasts with the surrounding brushed or anodized finish.
Deep scratches
A scratch that cuts through the finish cannot be cleaned away. RIMOWA describes deep dents and scratches as a unique patina because they cannot be removed. Check whether the edge is sharp, whether the frame still closes evenly, and whether the latch and lock work. Ask the suitcase maker or an authorized repair service about functional or structural damage rather than attempting to sand the area yourself.
Dents and bent frames
Do not force a dent outward with a hammer, clamp, heat gun, or improvised tool. Such methods can crack the shell, distort the frame, or prevent the gasket and latches from sealing. Empty the suitcase, test closure on a flat surface, and inspect wheels and handle alignment. If the case no longer closes, rolls, or locks correctly, stop using it for air travel until it has been assessed by an authorized repairer.
White residue, discoloration, or pitting
These signs can follow salt or prolonged moisture exposure. Rinse according to the manufacturer’s instructions, dry immediately, and inspect seams, fasteners, and the underside. Do not scrape residue with a blade or wire brush. If pitting, flaking, or corrosion around hardware continues after cleaning, seek model-specific service advice.
A practical decision table
| Observed condition | First action | When to stop DIY care |
|---|---|---|
| Dust, fingerprints, or loose sand | Lift off grit, then wipe with water and microfiber. | If particles are embedded or the finish changes while wiping. |
| Sticky or persistent dirt | Use a small amount of mild soap, then rinse and dry. | If the manufacturer forbids soap or the finish reacts. |
| Light handling scuff | Try one gentle cleaning pass. | If rubbing enlarges or brightens the mark. |
| Scratch through the finish | Document it and check operation of frame and hardware. | Do not sand, wire-brush, or polish aggressively. |
| Deep dent or bent frame | Test closure, latches, locks, wheels, and handle. | Use authorized repair if any function is impaired. |
| Salt or moisture exposure | Fresh-water rinse where directed, followed by complete drying. | If discoloration or pitting persists around joints or fasteners. |
Is a suitcase cover worth it for checked luggage?
For an aluminum case that will be checked, a fitted cover is usually worth considering because it addresses the most common avoidable problem: abrasive contact. It will not prevent a major impact dent, and it cannot substitute for correct packing or inspection. Its value is highest when the material is soft, the fit is secure, and the design leaves wheels, handles, latches, and locks usable.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
For carry-on use, the benefit is smaller because you control more of the handling, although a cover can still protect the shell in a car trunk, hotel storage area, or closet. In either situation, remove the cover periodically so you can inspect for moisture, grit, and damage.
Making a cover or cleaning method comparison
If you are choosing between covers, compare the points that affect real protection rather than appearance alone:
- Verified fit for the suitcase model and complete external dimensions.
- Softness and abrasion resistance of the lining, seams, and closures.
- Unrestricted access to wheels, handles, latches, and TSA locks.
- Whether it is designed for checked baggage or only for storage.
- How easily it can be washed, rinsed, and dried.
When comparing cleaners, look for explicit manufacturer approval, non-abrasive ingredients, compatibility with anodized finishes, minimal residue, and easy rinsing. If any of those points is unknown, clean with water and a microfiber cloth instead of guessing.

When to contact the manufacturer or a repair service
Contact the suitcase maker or an authorized repair network when a dent changes the frame, the lid no longer aligns, a latch or lock sticks, wheels wobble, the telescoping handle binds, or corrosion appears around fasteners. Provide the model, photographs, and a description of what happened. Cosmetic marks that do not affect protection may be left as patina, but functional damage should be evaluated before the next flight.
Keep receipts, model numbers, and photographs of the case before and after travel. This documentation does not remove damage, but it helps a repairer identify the correct parts and helps you distinguish a new problem from an older cosmetic mark.
