The dependable way to reduce damage from a technology selloff is to lower concentration before it happens: set a target allocation, measure your real technology exposure (including overlapping fund holdings and employer stock), diversify across assets and regions, and rebalance by a written rule rather than by headlines. Diversification can reduce concentration risk, but it cannot prevent losses when the entire market declines.

What “tech-heavy” really means

A portfolio is tech-heavy when its results depend disproportionately on technology companies or on a small set of technology-related issuers. There is no universal percentage that makes a portfolio too concentrated. The right ceiling depends on your goals, time horizon, other income, emergency reserves, tax situation and ability to tolerate losses without changing plan.

Measure exposure as a percentage of total investable assets, not merely as the percentage shown beside one account. A technology stock held in a brokerage account, a technology-sector fund in a retirement plan and company shares received through work all contribute to the same economic exposure. A broad-market fund can also have a large technology weighting, so its label alone does not prove that you are diversified.

Technology businesses bring risks that do not affect every sector in the same way. Products can become obsolete quickly, competition can compress margins, regulation can change permitted business models, and a handful of mega-cap companies can dominate an index or fund. Those risks can compound when several funds own the same companies.

Step 1: Diagnose concentration before changing anything

Build a complete inventory

List every holding and its current market value, then divide each value by the value of all investable assets. Include taxable accounts, retirement accounts, cash earmarked for investing, employer shares, restricted stock and vested options. Keep an emergency fund and near-term spending needs identified separately so you do not treat money that must remain liquid as risk capital.

  1. Export the holdings from each account on the same date.
  2. Group individual companies by sector and identify which are technology or technology-adjacent under the fund’s own classification.
  3. Record each fund’s published top holdings and sector weights.
  4. Add direct holdings to the portions held indirectly through funds.
  5. Calculate both technology-sector exposure and exposure to each major issuer.

Look through funds, not just fund names

An exchange-traded fund or mutual fund can package a narrow sector without making it broadly diversified. Investor.gov specifically cautions that a narrowly focused sector fund is not necessarily diversified. Two funds with different names may hold many of the same mega-cap companies; add those overlapping percentages to find your effective position.

For example, owning a technology-sector fund, a growth fund and a broad-market index may create a larger combined position in the same five or six companies than any one fact sheet suggests. Review the latest holdings and rebalance the total exposure, rather than swapping one fund for another with similar constituents.

Treat employer equity and options as a separate risk

Employment income and company stock can fail at the same time. A technology employer’s shares may fall while layoffs, bonuses and option value are also affected. Count vested shares at their current value and document unvested awards and options separately, because their liquidity and tax treatment differ. A maximum for any single issuer should include shares held in every account and through work.

Use a review threshold, not a prediction

Fidelity’s 2025 guidance says a holding of about 5% or more of a portfolio may deserve review. That is a prompt to investigate, not a universal sell instruction. A single stock below 5% can still be unsuitable for a person with low risk capacity, while a diversified fund can be appropriate at a higher percentage. Record why each position exists and what event would cause you to reduce it.

Step 2: Write guardrails that match your plan

Guardrails turn a volatile decision into a scheduled portfolio task. Write them when markets are calm and include the target, an allowed range and the action that follows a breach.

Guardrail What to specify Why it matters
Technology target A percentage or range of total assets that fits your risk capacity Prevents an accidental sector bet from becoming the portfolio’s central risk
Single-issuer maximum The largest percentage allowed in one company, including indirect holdings Limits damage from one product, lawsuit, regulator or balance-sheet problem
Drift trigger A percentage-point band or a calendar review date Defines when to act without guessing whether a decline has ended
Review frequency For example, quarterly or semiannually, plus a review after a major life change Keeps the plan current without encouraging daily trading
Permitted tools New contributions, dividends, exchanges, or partial sales Clarifies how to correct an overweight while controlling taxes and costs

Vanguard uses a 70% stock/30% bond illustration with a 5-percentage-point drift trigger. In that example, a stock allocation above 75% or below 65% would prompt a rebalance. It is an example of a rule, not a recommended allocation for every investor. Choose a stock/bond mix and technology range that you can maintain through a prolonged decline.

Do not set a target by looking only at the current market. A technology weight that feels comfortable after a rally may be intolerable after a 40% sector decline. Stress-test the plan mentally: if technology fell sharply while other assets were flat, would you still hold the remaining position and continue contributions? If not, the target is probably too high.

Step 3: Diversify deliberately rather than cosmetically

The SEC explains that combining asset categories whose returns differ across market conditions can reduce overall portfolio risk and smooth the ride. The objective is not to find an asset that always rises when technology falls; correlations change, and every category can lose value. Instead, combine exposures with different economic drivers, liquidity characteristics and time horizons.

Exposure Role it can play Checks before using it
Other equity sectors Reduces dependence on technology-specific products and regulation Check whether the fund still owns the same mega-cap companies and compare valuation, cyclicality and volatility
Non-domestic equities Adds companies exposed to different currencies, economies and sector mixes Accept currency, political, accounting and market-liquidity risks; verify regional weights
High-quality bonds Can provide income and a stabilizing allocation for money with a defined time horizon Review credit quality, duration, interest-rate sensitivity and whether the bonds are appropriate for the account
Cash equivalents Preserve liquidity for near-term spending and reduce the need to sell volatile assets Account for inflation, yield changes, access restrictions and the fact that cash may lag long-term growth
Broad-market equity Spreads ownership across many issuers and sectors Inspect current sector and top-holding weights; “broad” does not mean technology-free

Compare alternatives on six dimensions: asset class, sector and geographic exposure, liquidity, expected volatility, fees and tax treatment. A low-fee fund is not automatically suitable if it recreates your existing concentration. Conversely, adding a small allocation to an asset with a different role may improve resilience even when its recent return is lower.

Keep the diversification understandable. If you cannot explain what economic risk an investment adds or offsets, it should not be used merely to make a pie chart look varied. Avoid replacing a concentrated technology portfolio with a collection of narrowly themed funds that overlap one another.

Step 4: Rebalance with a repeatable process

Rebalancing restores the risk level you selected; it is not a forecast that one sector will fall tomorrow. The SEC and Investor.gov describe three basic methods: sell overweight assets, buy underweight assets, or direct new contributions to underweight categories. Vanguard characterizes rebalancing as staying aligned with long-term goals rather than timing the market.

  1. Confirm the breach. Recalculate weights using current values and your written trigger. Do not act on an intraday headline or a single price quote.
  2. Use cash flows first. Send new contributions, dividends and interest to underweight categories where practical. This can reduce trading and may avoid realizing gains.
  3. Exchange within tax-advantaged accounts when appropriate. Follow the account’s investment rules and check any transaction fees or restrictions.
  4. Plan taxable sales in stages. Identify lots, unrealized gains and losses, holding periods and your tax bracket before selling. A partial sale can move the position toward its target without an all-or-nothing decision.
  5. Check the post-trade allocation. Include the cash generated by a sale and any pending contributions so the new weight does not immediately miss the target.
  6. Document the action. Record the trigger, the amount moved, the account used and the next review date. This prevents a later rally from undoing the rule.

There is no requirement to rebalance to an exact decimal. A range can reduce unnecessary transactions: for example, act when an allocation is five percentage points away from target, then return it to the middle of the range. Choose either a calendar schedule, a percentage drift rule or a combination, and apply it consistently.

Tax and account considerations

Taxable accounts

Sales can create capital gains, and the cost basis of each lot determines the taxable result. Before selling, compare the tax cost with the concentration risk you are trying to reduce. You may be able to sell higher-basis lots, spread sales across tax years or use losses to offset gains, subject to the rules that apply where you file. Do not let a desire to avoid every tax bill leave a position far above your risk limit.

Tax-advantaged accounts

Retirement and other tax-advantaged accounts may permit exchanges without an immediate capital-gains bill, but they still have plan menus, fees and distribution rules. Use the account that offers the most practical way to correct the drift, while preserving the asset location and withdrawal strategy appropriate to your plan.

Wash-sale and related restrictions

If you sell an investment at a loss and buy a substantially identical investment in another account, wash-sale rules may defer the loss. The definition and reporting consequences depend on the jurisdiction and the transaction. Check the applicable tax rules or ask a qualified professional before coordinating sales across taxable accounts, retirement accounts and automatic reinvestment programs.

Employer shares and options

Company plans can impose trading windows, blackout periods, vesting conditions and special tax treatment. A sale that lowers concentration may also affect withholding or future income. Read the plan documents and coordinate with tax advice rather than assuming a normal brokerage transaction is available.

How to behave when the selloff starts

A written allocation rule is most valuable when prices are falling. Start by checking whether the portfolio is outside its guardrails, not by asking whether the market has reached its bottom. Selling every technology holding after a large drop can lock in losses and leave you absent for a rebound; buying aggressively because a stock looks cheaper can deepen an existing concentration.

  • Separate the plan from the news. A changed investment thesis, a new cash need or a permanently lower risk capacity may justify action. A dramatic headline alone does not.
  • Use the same measurement method. Compare total-return values and look-through holdings using the same dates and definitions you used when setting the target.
  • Stage decisions if emotion is high. A prewritten partial-sale schedule can reduce the chance of an impulsive liquidation while still lowering an excessive position.
  • Protect liquidity first. Maintain the cash reserve needed for bills and known obligations so a market decline does not force a sale at an unfavorable time.
  • Do not borrow to defend a position. Leverage can turn a temporary decline into a forced liquidation.

Fidelity’s guidance states that diversification does not guarantee a profit or protect against ever losing money. The purpose is to keep one sector or issuer from determining whether you can meet your goals, not to eliminate market risk.

Worked example: applying a rule without predicting the market

Assume an investor chooses a 70% stock and 30% bond target, with technology set at 25% of total assets and a five-percentage-point drift trigger. After a strong technology rally, the portfolio is 32% technology. The investor first directs all new contributions and dividends to bonds and non-technology equities. If the technology weight remains above 30%, the investor sells only enough of the highest-priority lots to move toward 25%, after reviewing taxes and trading costs.

If technology later falls and the portfolio reaches 22%, the same rule works in reverse: future contributions go to technology or another underweight category until the allocation returns to the chosen range. The investor does not change the target merely because prices moved. This example illustrates mechanics; the percentages are not a prescription.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Mistake Why it fails Better practice
Counting each fund separately Overlapping holdings can hide a large issuer or sector bet Aggregate look-through exposure across every account
Assuming a broad-market label removes technology risk Market-cap weighting can leave a fund heavily exposed to a few mega-cap companies Review current sector and top-holding data
Using a universal “safe” technology percentage Risk capacity differs by person, goal and time horizon Set a range through a written investment plan
Waiting for certainty before rebalancing The bottom and rebound cannot be identified reliably in advance Follow a calendar or drift trigger
Ignoring taxes until after a sale Unexpected gains can change the cost of the trade Review cost basis, lots and account type first
Checking prices every hour Short-term noise encourages untargeted trading Review on the schedule in your policy unless circumstances change

When professional help is worthwhile

Consider a fee-only or fiduciary financial planner when employer stock, options, multiple account types, concentrated gains or a complicated family cash-flow plan make execution difficult. Ask how the professional is paid, whether they owe a fiduciary duty for the service provided, how they handle taxes and what monitoring you receive.

An automated portfolio-rebalancing service can help maintain drift bands and route contributions, but it cannot decide whether your target fits your life. Verify the service’s fees, investment menu, tax-aware features, account coverage, security controls and geographic availability before transferring assets. You remain responsible for confirming that the recommended allocation reflects your goals.

Portfolio selloff checklist

  • Inventory every account, employer holding and option.
  • Calculate technology exposure and each issuer’s combined weight.
  • Inspect overlapping fund holdings and current sector weights.
  • Set a technology range, issuer maximum and drift trigger in writing.
  • Choose diversifiers by role, liquidity, volatility, fees and tax treatment.
  • Route new money and dividends to underweight categories first.
  • Before taxable sales, review basis, gains, losses and wash-sale implications.
  • Recalculate after trades and record the next review date.
  • Revisit the plan after a change in income, spending needs, employment or risk capacity.

A selloff is not a special invitation to guess the next winning sector. It is a test of whether the portfolio still reflects the risk you deliberately chose. Concentration limits, broad sources of return and disciplined rebalancing address that problem without promising protection from losses.
