The most reliable protection is a plan you make before prices fall: set a stock, bond and cash mix that fits your time horizon and ability to تحمل losses; diversify across assets, sectors, companies and countries; keep emergency and near-term money liquid; and rebalance to written targets instead of trying to predict the next headline. During a selloff, those rules can limit forced selling and concentration risk, but no allocation eliminates losses or identifies the exact market bottom.
What portfolio protection can—and cannot—do
Protection means reducing the chance that a market decline derails a goal or forces you to sell at an unfavorable time. It does not mean preserving every dollar in a falling stock market. A portfolio can still lose value, and a defensive move can underperform if prices recover quickly.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) advises investors to use a long-term, risk-appropriate plan rather than attempting to time the market. Selling every stock after a decline can lock in losses and leave you out of a recovery. As Lori Schock, former Director of the SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance, put it: "If you sell all of your stock assets when the market is down, you can lose a significant amount of money."
Start by separating two decisions: how much risk your plan should take over years, and what action—if any—is justified by a temporary decline. The first is strategic allocation. The second is disciplined maintenance of that allocation.

Set a risk-appropriate allocation before markets fall
Match the mix to your time horizon
Asset allocation divides money among stocks, bonds, cash and other assets. Investor.gov says the appropriate mix changes with your time horizon and risk tolerance. Money needed soon has less time to recover from a drawdown; money reserved for a distant goal may be able to tolerate more volatility.
List each goal and the date you expect to spend the money. Keep near-term spending and emergency reserves in vehicles whose value is less volatile than stocks. Treat retirement money needed decades from now differently from a down payment or tuition payment due in the next several years.
Measure risk tolerance and risk capacity separately
Risk tolerance is how much fluctuation you can emotionally withstand. Risk capacity is how much loss your finances can absorb without changing a goal. A high tolerance does not create capacity if you have unstable income, large debts or an imminent cash need. Conversely, a long horizon may provide capacity even when market drops feel uncomfortable.
Write a target percentage for each major asset class and the reason it fits your goals. The SEC does not prescribe one universal stock, bond or cash percentage; the correct target depends on your circumstances and can change when your horizon, income, liabilities or goals change.
Recognize that stocks have ordinary losing years
The SEC’s beginner guide notes that large-company stocks have lost money on average about one out of every three years. A single losing year therefore is not, by itself, evidence that a long-term stock allocation has failed. The relevant question is whether the allocation still matches the goal and the ability to endure volatility.

Diversify the risks a global selloff can expose
Diversification spreads money among investments so that one security or market does not determine the result. Investor.gov cautions that a narrowly focused fund may not be diversified. Diversify both between asset classes and within each asset class.
Check concentration inside funds
Look through each fund or account to identify its largest holdings, sector weights and country exposure. Owning several funds does not guarantee diversification if they hold the same large companies or the same industry. Compare the underlying holdings, not just the fund names.

Include employer stock, restricted shares, options, real estate, business ownership and foreign-currency income in your risk map. A portfolio that appears broad in a brokerage account can still be concentrated in one employer, country, currency or economic sector when all household assets are considered.
Use breadth without assuming it removes risk
Broad stock and bond holdings can reduce single-company and single-sector risk, but they still decline when markets fall together. Diversification changes the pattern of losses; it does not guarantee a positive return or prevent a global drawdown.
Keep liquidity so a selloff cannot force a sale
Emergency reserves and money for short-term goals should be held in suitable lower-volatility assets rather than assets that may be sharply down when the bill arrives. The SEC’s 2026 investor bulletin warns that without an emergency fund, a small financial upset can become long-term debt.

Separate three cash needs
- Operating cash: money for ordinary bills and known expenses.
- Emergency reserves: a buffer for job loss, medical costs or urgent repairs.
- Investment capital: money whose timing is flexible and can remain invested through a downturn.
Set the first two amounts from your actual spending, income stability, insurance and access to credit. Do not count volatile stocks as emergency cash merely because they can be sold. Replenish reserves before increasing risk after a withdrawal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWrite a rebalancing policy instead of trading on headlines
Market moves can push a portfolio away from its intended risk level. Rebalancing restores the target by selling overweight assets, buying underweight assets or directing new contributions to the underweight side. Check tax and transaction effects before placing trades.
Define the trigger and schedule
Choose a written review schedule or a tolerance band around each target. The policy should state what deviation prompts action, which accounts are checked and who is authorized to trade. A rule made in advance is less vulnerable to fear during a rapid decline.
Use the least tax-costly method available
- Direct new contributions toward the underweight asset when cash flow allows.
- Use dividends, interest and maturing cash flows to move weights toward target.
- If trades are still required, review account type, tax lots, realized gains and transaction costs before selling.
- Document the resulting weights and the date of the next review.
In a taxable account, selling an appreciated holding can create a capital-gains tax bill; in a retirement account, the tax treatment and investment menu may differ. A rebalance that ignores those effects can create avoidable costs. The SEC describes the discipline this way: "By cutting back on current ‘winners’ and/or adding more current ‘losers,’ rebalancing forces you to buy low and sell high."
What to do while a global selloff is under way
Use the written plan as a checklist, not the news cycle as a trading signal. The sequence below keeps decisions tied to your actual risk rather than to an unknowable bottom.

- Pause discretionary trades. Confirm that a proposed sale or purchase is required by a goal, a documented rebalance rule or a material change in your finances.
- Recheck the target mix. Compare current stock, bond and cash weights with the written allocation and identify any concentration that the decline has revealed.
- Protect liquidity first. Verify that operating cash and emergency reserves remain available so ordinary bills will not require selling long-term assets.
- Apply the lowest-cost rebalance path. Use new contributions or cash flows first, then consider trades after reviewing taxes, spreads and account restrictions.
- Avoid unplanned leverage. Do not add margin, inverse products, short positions or rapid trading unless you fully understand their mechanics, financing costs and risk of losses larger than the initial investment.
- Record the decision. Note the reason, target weight, tax impact and review date. A record prevents repeated, emotion-driven changes.
Short-term trading in a volatile market can lead to buying high or selling low. The SEC and other regulators specifically warn that leveraged, inverse and other short-term strategies carry significant loss risk for investors who do not understand them.
Keep contributions disciplined when cash flow permits
Continuing a scheduled contribution can spread purchases across different prices instead of committing all available cash on one day. The SEC, Commodity Futures Trading Commission, Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, North American Securities Administrators Association, National Futures Association and Securities Investor Protection Corporation said in their October 5, 2026 World Investor Week bulletin that "Patient, periodic investing—and employing strategies such as dollar-cost averaging—can help mitigate volatility and short-term swings in portfolio performance."
This approach is not a guarantee against loss and is not a reason to invest money needed for bills. Keep the contribution schedule only after emergency reserves, debt payments and near-term obligations are covered. If income falls, reducing or pausing contributions can be appropriate; resume the written schedule when cash flow permits.

Two common approaches are a target-date fund or a self-managed mix of broad holdings. The choice is about control and maintenance, not a promise of superior returns.

| Approach | How allocation is maintained | Control and work required | Checks before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Target-date fund | The fund can automate allocation changes and rebalancing as the target date approaches. | Less day-to-day monitoring; the investor accepts the fund’s glide path and holdings. | Stock, bond and cash exposure; geographic and sector breadth; largest holdings; fees; tax treatment; and whether the glide path fits the actual goal date. |
| Self-managed mix | The investor sets targets and rebalances with contributions, cash flows or trades. | More control over holdings, taxes and timing; requires a written policy and regular monitoring. | Fund expenses, account location, tax lots, trading costs, employer-plan restrictions and the time available to maintain targets. |
For either approach, inspect what is actually owned. A fund label alone does not reveal concentration, currency exposure or the share held in stocks, bonds and cash.

Account and tax details that change the best action
The same allocation decision can have different consequences in a taxable brokerage account, an individual retirement account or an employer plan. Before selling, identify the account type, cost basis, holding period, tax lots, distribution rules and available investment menu.
- Taxable accounts: compare the expected tax on realized gains with the benefit of restoring the target. Choose specific lots where your custodian permits it, and keep transaction costs in the calculation.
- Tax-advantaged accounts: rebalancing may avoid current capital-gains tax, but withdrawals, plan rules and limited fund menus still matter.
- Employer plans: check trading windows, matching rules, blackout periods and any employer-stock concentration before changing positions.
- Household level: coordinate accounts so the combined portfolio—not each account in isolation—matches the intended stock, bond, cash, sector and geographic exposures.
When tax consequences or plan rules are complex, obtain individualized advice from a qualified tax or investment professional. General guidance cannot determine the right trade for your circumstances.
After the selloff: review the plan, not the forecast
When prices stabilize, do not replace one emotional decision with a prediction about the rebound. Rebalance only to the documented target unless your life circumstances have changed.

- Did your income, debt, insurance or emergency reserve change?
- Did the date or size of a goal move closer?
- Was the decline larger emotionally or financially than you could tolerate?
- Did a holding, sector, employer or currency become more concentrated than intended?
Record the answer before changing the allocation. A lower target may be justified by a shorter horizon or reduced risk capacity; changing it solely because prices fell can turn a temporary event into a permanent strategy shift.
Restore the normal contribution process
Once cash-flow needs are covered, return to the scheduled contribution and review calendar. Avoid investing a one-time windfall on the assumption that a specific day is the bottom; use the policy you selected for pacing contributions.
Watch for fraud that feeds on market fear
Sharp declines create urgency that impersonators and relationship-based scammers can exploit. The SEC’s 2026 investor bulletin highlights relationship and impersonation investment scams. Treat unsolicited messages, guaranteed-recovery claims, requests to move money quickly and pressure to share account credentials as warning signs.
- Verify a person’s identity through a contact method you already trust, not a link or phone number in an unexpected message.
- Never share passwords, one-time codes or remote-access control with someone promising to protect your portfolio.
- Check an investment professional’s registration independently before sending funds.
- Discuss suspicious requests with your custodian’s fraud department and report suspected fraud promptly.
A repeatable portfolio-protection workflow
- Inventory: list every account, holding, fund exposure, employer share, debt and cash reserve.
- Map goals: assign each dollar to a time horizon and identify which money must remain liquid.
- Set targets: document stock, bond, cash and other-asset weights that fit your horizon, tolerance and capacity.
- Test diversification: review underlying holdings, sectors, countries, currencies and largest positions across the household.
- Write rules: specify contribution routing, rebalance triggers, review dates and tax checks.
- Automate what is safe: schedule contributions and reminders while preserving enough cash for emergencies.
- During a selloff: follow the rules, avoid leverage and confirm liquidity before acting.
- Afterward: document changed circumstances, rebalance to target and resume the normal process.
This workflow protects the decisions that are controllable—risk level, diversification, liquidity, taxes and behavior—without pretending that anyone can forecast every global market move.
