Protect a modded Minecraft server from BleedingPipe by doing four things in order: identify every loader and mod version, update vulnerable mods from their authoritative project pages, deploy a compatible deserialization filter such as PipeBlocker (or evaluate SerializationIsBad for a Forge pack), and scan both the server and every computer that handled the pack. If you find suspicious files or cannot prove the host is clean, isolate it, rotate credentials from a clean device, and rebuild rather than trusting an uncertain backup.
BleedingPipe is a remote-code-execution problem in certain Minecraft mods that use unsafe Java object deserialization. It is not a Forge vulnerability, and the correct fix depends on the exact mods, Minecraft version, loader, Java runtime, and whether protection is needed on the server, clients, or both.

BleedingPipe abuses unsafe use of Java’s ObjectInputStream in affected Minecraft mods. A crafted network payload can trigger deserialization and execute code in the context of the server process. The Minecraft Malware Prevention Alliance (MMPA) reported on July 29, 2023 that the exploit had been used in the wild and that code running on a server could then reach connected clients.
The vulnerable component is an installed mod, not Forge itself. MMPA’s wording is unambiguous: “This is a vulnerability in mods using unsafe deserialization code, not in Forge itself.” Updating Forge alone therefore does not establish that a pack is safe.

The most visible exposure involved Forge packs, particularly Minecraft 1.7.10 and 1.12.2, but an affected mod can create risk on another Minecraft release as well. A vanilla server has no mod code of this type. Paper and Spigot installations are outside the Forge-mod attack path described by the advisory, although their administrators still need to track their own plugins, software and security advisories.
Start with a precise inventory
Do not install a random “fix” before recording what is running. Compatibility failures are common in older packs, and an inventory gives you a rollback point and evidence for incident response.
Record the server and client environment
- Minecraft version and whether it is a server jar, a client instance, or both.
- Loader and exact build: Forge, Fabric or another supported loader.
- Every mod JAR filename, project version and file hash if your management system records hashes.
- Java runtime and major version used by the launcher and by the dedicated server.
- Launcher or panel, operating system, server host, listening ports and remote-management services.
- Locations of world saves, configuration files, scripts, crash reports, logs and backups.
- Which administrators’ computers and launchers have opened, copied or updated the pack.
Preserve evidence before changing files
Stop making unnecessary edits. Copy the current mods directory, configuration, scripts and recent logs to read-only storage. Record timestamps and keep the original archive separate from the files you will test. If the server is still running and you suspect active compromise, capture the relevant logs and then stop it; do not keep an untrusted process online merely to preserve uptime.
Update every affected mod from an authoritative project page
MMPA specifically calls out EnderIO, BDLib and LogisticsPipes and advises updating them to their latest available versions on CurseForge. Those names are an exposure warning, not a complete list: any mod that implements unsafe deserialization can require a fix. Check each installed project against its maintainer’s current release notes and security guidance.

- Make a staging copy of the server and client pack.
- For each mod, open the project’s authoritative download or release page and identify the version that addresses the issue.
- Replace the old JAR in the staging
modsdirectory; do not leave two versions of the same mod present. - Start the staging server with the same Java and loader versions used in production.
- Connect with a staging client and exercise key systems: world loading, inventories, machines, dimensions, automation, permissions and backups.
- Review the log for missing dependencies, mixin or coremod errors, registry mismatches and world-conversion warnings.
- Only after the complete pack works should you schedule the production update, and keep the previous known-good files for rollback.
MMPA warns that updating every mod in a premade pack at once can introduce instability or break compatibility. A security update is necessary, but “latest” does not mean “interchangeable”: respect the pack’s dependency constraints and test the whole set.
Add a protocol-level defense with PipeBlocker
PipeBlocker is a mitigation mod that filters Java ObjectInputStream deserialization. Its project documentation lists Forge and Fabric support across many Minecraft versions and describes use in both server and client environments. That matrix changes by release, so select a PipeBlocker build whose loader and Minecraft version exactly match your pack.

- Download the release that names your exact loader and Minecraft version.
- Shut down the server cleanly.
- Copy the PipeBlocker JAR into the server’s
modsdirectory. Keep the original mod archive and a backup of the directory. - Start a staging copy first. Confirm in the startup log that the mod loads and that no dependency or Java-version error appears.
- Connect with a client using the complete pack and test normal gameplay, mod networking and server restarts.
- Repeat the installation in production only after the staging test succeeds.
Client installation
Install PipeBlocker on clients when the release documentation lists client support for your loader and version. A server-side filter protects the server process, but it cannot by itself prevent malicious code from being delivered through a compromised client-side mod or from affecting an unprotected client. Distribute one tested build to every player rather than allowing a mixture of versions.
What to verify after deployment
- The server and clients are running the same intended loader and PipeBlocker release.
- The startup log shows the mitigation loading before players join.
- Normal mod communications still work, including machines, pipes, inventories and remote interfaces.
- There are no repeated deserialization-block messages that indicate a legitimate mod is being broken; investigate the sender and the mod before suppressing the protection.
When SerializationIsBad may fit a Forge pack
Shockbyte describes SerializationIsBad as a patcher that can be installed on the client or server. Its project listing identifies it as a Forge coremod intended to address serious vulnerabilities in multiple mods. A coremod changes loading behavior at a lower level than an ordinary content mod, so it can be useful for a legacy Forge pack when its supported versions line up.

Confirm the exact Minecraft version, Forge build, Java major version and pack dependencies named by the SerializationIsBad release before installing it. Test in an isolated copy; coremod conflicts can prevent startup or alter mod behavior. Do not run PipeBlocker and SerializationIsBad together in production simply because both mention deserialization. First establish whether the projects document combined use, then test the pair with the complete pack.
Choose a mitigation by compatibility, coverage and operations
No single label such as “server fix” answers whether a deployment is protected. Compare the actual release and your operating conditions across these five axes.

If the PipeBlocker matrix clearly matches your pack, it is a straightforward first mitigation. If a legacy Forge pack cannot use it but a compatible SerializationIsBad build is documented, test that patcher instead. In either case, updating or removing the affected mod remains preferable to relying on a filter alone.
Scan for an existing compromise
Protection is not proof that a server has never been exploited. MMPA recommends looking for suspicious files, running antivirus and scanning the .minecraft directory. CurseForge documents a detection tool that scans folders containing mod JARs and reports infected files.

Scan every place the pack exists
- The dedicated server host, including its world, configuration, script and temporary directories.
- Launcher instances and the
.minecraftdirectory on every administrator’s computer. - Player or staff workstations that downloaded, unpacked or tested the pack.
- Backup repositories and old pack archives before restoring them.
- Panel, SSH, RCON, database and automation hosts that could have received credentials from the server.
Use current antivirus signatures and the documented mod-directory scanner. Preserve any detection, filename, path and timestamp instead of deleting it immediately; those details help determine scope. A clean scan is useful evidence, but it cannot prove that an attacker left no persistence or that an unknown payload was not missed.
What to do if indicators or uncertainty exist
Treat an unexplained executable, changed script, new administrator account, altered configuration, unusual outbound connection or suspicious log entry as an incident until you can account for it.
- Stop the server. Prevent further code execution and do not let players reconnect while the host is being assessed.
- Isolate the host. Restrict unnecessary network access at the firewall or hosting panel. Keep only the management path needed for investigation, and use a clean administration device.
- Rotate credentials. Change panel, SSH, RCON, database, Discord, backup and other server-related credentials from a clean device. Revoke old keys and sessions rather than merely changing one password.
- Preserve and compare. Keep copies of logs and the original
modsdirectory. Compare world, configuration, scripts and mod files with known-good copies and inspect changes outside the expected update window. - Rebuild when integrity is uncertain. Provision a clean host, reinstall the loader and vetted mods, and apply the mitigation before opening network access. Do not restore executable files or an entire server directory from an untrusted backup.
- Restore selectively. Bring back only checked world data and configuration. Scan each archive first and retain a rollback copy until the rebuilt server has operated normally.
- Notify affected administrators. Anyone who used the compromised pack should scan their workstation and rotate credentials that were entered while the server was untrusted.
Version-specific guidance for common questions
Is Forge 1.7.10 vulnerable?
Forge 1.7.10 is not automatically vulnerable merely because of its age. The relevant question is whether the installed mods use the unsafe deserialization path. Inventory the exact JARs, update affected projects where a compatible release exists, and select a mitigation whose documentation explicitly supports Minecraft 1.7.10 and your Forge build.
Is Forge 1.12.2 vulnerable?
The same rule applies to 1.12.2. It was a high-profile environment for BleedingPipe exposure, but the loader version alone does not identify the vulnerable component. Check every mod and test the chosen server and client protection against the complete 1.12.2 pack.

Do vanilla, Paper or Spigot servers need PipeBlocker?
They are outside the Forge-mod attack path described by MMPA, so PipeBlocker is not a universal requirement for those installations. Continue to patch the server and plugins you actually run and follow their current advisories; do not install an unrelated mod into a platform that does not support it.
Do players need the protection on their clients?
Use the client build when the mitigation’s release documentation supports your loader and Minecraft version. Protecting only the server leaves unprotected clients outside that server-side boundary, while installing an incompatible client JAR can stop the pack from launching. Distribute one tested version and verify it at connection time through your normal pack-management process.
Keep the defense effective after the first fix
- Maintain a manifest of approved mod filenames, versions and hashes for each pack release.
- Subscribe to advisories for the loader and every high-risk networking or library mod in the pack.
- Test updates in a staging server before production and retain a known-good rollback archive.
- Limit server process permissions so a mod compromise cannot freely modify unrelated operating-system data.
- Restrict RCON, panel and SSH access by network, use unique credentials and require multi-factor authentication where available.
- Back up worlds and configurations on a schedule, keep copies offline or otherwise isolated, and periodically test restoration.
- Review outbound network connections and authentication logs for anomalies rather than waiting for a crash.
- Document who can update mods, where clean copies are stored and which steps to follow if a scan detects a file.
A practical deployment sequence
For a server that is currently online but shows no compromise indicators, the safest order is: preserve the existing files, build a staging copy, inventory the environment, update affected mods, install one compatible mitigation, test the complete pack, scan server and client directories, then schedule the production restart. For any positive indicator or unexplained integrity change, skip the in-place update and follow the isolation-and-rebuild procedure instead.
MMPA’s July 29, 2023 advisory says, “We recommend that you take this seriously.” That means treating BleedingPipe as a software-supply-chain and host-security issue, not as a one-time JAR replacement. A current mod set, a version-matched deserialization defense, scanned endpoints, tested backups and a rebuild plan together provide the durable protection a modded server needs.
