The safest way to protect a foldable phone’s inner display is to leave its factory-installed protector in place, keep grit and sharp objects away from the open screen, clean only with a clean, dry, soft cloth, and inspect the display and hinge before folding the phone.
Google and Samsung both warn that their foldable inner displays need model-specific care. The guidance below is based on Google’s Safety & regulatory guide for Pixel Fold and Samsung’s foldable-phone support guidance; your phone’s own support page takes priority, especially for protector replacement or repair.
Why the inner display needs different care
A foldable phone’s inner panel is a flexible display rather than a conventional rigid glass screen. Google describes the Pixel Fold flexible display as softer than a typical phone display and warns that sand, dirt and other fine particles can scratch or damage the screen or hinge. Samsung likewise warns that sharp objects can scratch or puncture a main screen.

That construction changes the most important habit: do not treat the unfolded panel like a screen that can tolerate hard rubbing, pressure or objects sliding across it. A particle trapped between the two halves while the phone closes can create concentrated pressure at the display or hinge. The exact level of resistance varies by phone generation and manufacturer, so a general scratch-resistance rating cannot be applied to every foldable.

Protect the phone before dust reaches the display
Carry it closed in dirty environments
When you are around sand, dust, crumbs or other loose particles, keep the phone folded. Google specifically advises Pixel Fold users to avoid dusty environments and warns that fine particles can damage the display. Open the phone in a cleaner area whenever practical rather than unfolding it beside a beach, workshop, unsealed food or a visibly dusty surface.
Folding the phone reduces the time the inner panel is exposed, but it does not make debris harmless. Do not press the inner display with a fingernail, pen tip or another sharp object. Samsung’s foldable-device precautions specifically warn about scratches and punctures caused by sharp objects. Use a fingertip with light pressure for normal taps, and never use a tool to lift, scrape or pry at the screen film.
Be mindful of objects on the table as well as items in your hand. A pen, key or small tool placed beside an open phone can shift onto the display if the surface is bumped. Keep sharp objects away from the screen while it is open, and do not set them on top of the phone. This is a straightforward handling precaution, not a claim that ordinary contact with every object will damage every model.
Use a clean surface when unfolding
Place the phone on a clean, stable surface when you need both hands to open it. A table carrying visible grit can transfer particles to the display, while an unstable surface increases the chance of a drop or a sharp object contacting the panel. This is a handling precaution, not a guarantee that a case or surface will prevent inner-screen damage.
If you cannot find a clean surface, hold the phone securely and open it carefully rather than placing the inner screen directly against a dusty or gritty area. Avoid unfolding it over loose sand, crumbs or workshop debris. Then inspect the panel and hinge before closing it again.

Leave the factory-installed inner protector in place
The thin film supplied on many foldables is part of the device’s intended display system. Google says not to remove or peel back the pre-installed Pixel Fold protector because doing so can cause damage. Samsung tells Galaxy foldable owners not to remove the supplied protector and not to install unapproved films or stickers.

A film that fits a conventional phone is not automatically suitable for a folding panel. The available official guidance does not establish a universal third-party replacement or compatibility standard. If you are considering an accessory that touches the inner screen, first check whether the manufacturer approves it for your exact model; do not treat a generic fit claim as proof of compatibility.
If the supplied film is lifting, bubbling, torn or otherwise damaged, stop trying to smooth or peel it yourself. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider for the exact model. Clean dust and fingerprints without stressing the panel
For ordinary dust and smudges, use a clean, dry, soft cloth. Google recommends a dry cloth for Pixel Fold dust and smudges. Samsung’s US support guidance also mentions using a microfiber cloth to remove dust or fingerprints from the phone surface while fitting a protective cover. A soft microfiber cloth is therefore a cleaning aid, not a protective shield.
Choose a cloth that is clean and soft, not one that has collected grit in a pocket or bag. A dirty cloth can move particles across the surface instead of removing them. A microfiber cloth is a practical option because Samsung names one in its guidance, but it does not create a seal, prevent dust from entering the hinge or replace the factory-installed protector.
Safe cleaning procedure
- Fold only after inspection. Hold the phone securely and look across the inner display and along the hinge for visible grit, sand, crumbs or other particles.
- Remove loose dust gently. With a clean, dry, soft cloth, make light passes over the surface. Do not press down to force a particle across the panel.
- Stop if a particle will not move. Do not dig at it with a fingernail, card, stylus, pen, pick or other object. Pressing or scraping can turn a removable particle into a scratch or puncture.

Do not close the phone to see whether the particle disappears or is pushed away. The manufacturer’s instruction for Pixel Fold is to check for objects and fine particles on the display and in the hinge before closing. The screen has a new scratch, mark or puncture
