The safest approach is layered protection: use a case made for your exact foldable model, keep the factory inner-screen protector in place, keep grit and hard objects away from the fold, and handle water as a limited hazard rather than proof of waterproofing. A hinge-cover case can reduce impact and debris exposure, but only if it leaves the hinge, vents, buttons and folding path clear. Never add a conventional screen protector over the flexible inner display or peel off the factory film yourself; have the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider replace it.

Start with the four rules that prevent most damage

Foldable phones have two exposed shells, a flexible inner display and a moving hinge. Protection therefore has to address more than a slab phone’s glass and corners. Build your routine around these rules:

  • Fit the phone with a model-specific case. Cases and covers differ between foldable models. Choose one designed for the exact model and generation, not merely a case described as fitting a phone from the same brand.
  • Leave the factory inner-screen protector alone. It is designed to flex with the display. Do not lift an edge, trim it or apply another rigid film over it.
  • Keep particles and objects out of the fold. Sand, dust, coins, keys, cards and other debris can scratch the flexible display or interfere with the hinge closing.
  • Assume water resistance is limited. A tested IP rating, where a particular model has one, comes from controlled laboratory conditions. It does not make a phone waterproof or dustproof for everyday use.

These measures work together. A tough case cannot stop a grain of sand pressed into the hinge, and a clean hinge cannot prevent a corner impact when the phone is carried unprotected.

Choose a case that protects without interfering with the fold

A case is the main defense against drops and abrasion, but foldables need a more exact fit than conventional phones. Samsung notes that covers vary by foldable model, and Motorola directs owners toward accessories designed for the specific phone. Use that model-specific guidance as the starting point.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Decide how much hinge coverage you actually need

A hinge-cover design places material over or alongside the hinge and can reduce direct contact with a table, pocket debris or a glancing impact. The trade-off is added thickness and a greater chance that a poorly designed cover will rub, bind or trap grit. An open-hinge case is usually slimmer and may slide into a pocket more easily, but it leaves more of the moving mechanism exposed.

Choose hinge coverage when the phone is often carried in a bag, used outdoors or handled in environments where the hinge may encounter dust. Prioritize a slimmer design when pocketability matters and you can reliably keep the phone away from debris. In either case, reject a case that makes the phone difficult to close or that leaves adhesive, rails or a hinge flap misaligned.

Check the fit before trusting the case

  1. Verify the exact model name and generation printed in the phone’s settings or on its packaging. Similar-looking foldables can have different hinge widths, camera positions and vent locations.
  2. Install the case with the phone clean and unfolded, following the case maker’s instructions rather than forcing a corner into place.
  3. Open and close the phone slowly. Watch the hinge area from both sides. The case should not buckle, pinch, scrape or stop the phone from reaching its normal closed position.
  4. Press every button and test the fingerprint reader, speakers, microphones, charging port and any vent openings. The case must leave those paths clear.
  5. Fold and unfold the phone several times while checking that no edge lifts and that the hinge cover stays aligned.
  6. Test wireless charging if you use it. A case can change charging alignment, and magnets or metal parts may affect compatibility with a particular charger or accessory.

Remove a case that shifts during folding. Movement can expose a corner at the moment of impact and may let dust collect between the case and the phone.

Balance grip, cushioning and pocketability

A grippy outer surface can reduce the chance of a drop, while flexible edge material can spread an impact away from the phone’s shells. Those benefits often add bulk. Compare the case in your normal carry position: place it in the pocket or pouch you actually use, take it out one-handed, and open it without catching the hinge cover on fabric. A case that stays at home because it is too bulky provides no protection when the phone is most vulnerable.

Look for raised edges around the outer display and cameras, but make sure those edges do not press against the inner screen when the phone is closed. The inner display should close against its intended surfaces, not against a hard ridge, lip or trapped piece of plastic.

Protect the flexible inner display and its factory film

The pre-installed inner-screen protector is part of the phone’s protection system. Samsung says its protector is designed to withstand folding while helping protect against scratches and debris. Google warns that removing or peeling it can cause damage. Do not treat a lifted corner like a normal phone screen protector that can simply be replaced at home.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Do not add a conventional protector on top

A rigid glass protector or an adhesive film made for a flat phone can change the way the flexible panel bends. It may lift at the crease, create pressure points or interfere with closing. The safest answer to “Can I put another protector on it?” is no unless the phone manufacturer specifically approves that exact accessory for the inner display. If the original film is scratched, bubbling or lifting, use the manufacturer’s service channel or an authorized repair provider for replacement.

Keep pressure and sharp edges away

When the phone is open, do not place keys, pens, coins, cards or other hard objects on the display. Avoid pressing the crease with a fingernail or stylus tip. When closing the phone, bring the halves together normally; never snap them shut on an object or force a fold against resistance.

Motorola specifically warns that cards, coins, keys and other objects can damage the screen or prevent the hinge from closing properly. The warning applies even when an object seems thin enough to fit. A card can bend, shift or carry grit into the fold.

Keep sand, dust and grit out of the hinge

Fine particles are a special risk because they can hide in the hinge and be pressed against the flexible display during the next fold. Google advises avoiding dusty environments and says that sand, dirt and other fine particles may scratch or damage the softer flexible display or the hinge mechanism. It also instructs users to make sure no particles are present before closing the device.

Use a two-second pre-close check

  1. Hold the phone open under good light.
  2. Inspect both inner-screen halves, especially the edges near the crease.
  3. Look across the hinge channel for grains, lint or a foreign object.
  4. Turn the phone slightly so particles catch the light; do not assume a clean-looking surface is particle-free.
  5. Remove visible debris with a soft, clean, dry cloth or follow the phone maker’s approved cleaning method. Do not push grit deeper with a fingernail, card or sharp tool.
  6. Close the phone only after both halves and the hinge path are clear.

Do not shake or blow forcefully into the hinge. High-pressure air can drive particles farther inside, and aggressive probing can damage the mechanism or the display.

Control the environment when the phone is open

At a beach, construction site, workshop or dusty trail, keep the phone closed when you are not actively using it. A closed phone still needs a case and a clean hinge, but it presents less flexible display area to airborne grit. Avoid setting an open foldable directly on sand, a dirty bench or a pocket surface carrying debris.

Reduce drop, puncture and abrasion risk during everyday carrying

Most carrying damage is preventable before the phone leaves your hand. Use a dedicated pocket or compartment rather than sharing space with keys, coins, tools or chargers. Close the phone before putting it in a bag. Keep it away from objects that can puncture, scratch or press into the hinge.

  • Do not stack a folded phone beneath books, tools or other heavy items.
  • Do not place it loose in a pocket with metal objects, even when the outer screens are covered.
  • Use a wrist strap or secure grip accessory only when it is designed for the exact case and does not pull on the hinge or block folding.
  • When handing the phone to someone unfamiliar with foldables, explain where to hold it and ask them not to force the hinge flat or shut it over an object.
  • Set the phone on a stable, clean surface with the hinge away from the table edge.

A case reduces impact consequences; it does not make a drop harmless. Motorola warns that dropping, puncturing or scratching can damage water-repellent features, so inspect the phone after a serious impact even if it still turns on.

Clean a foldable phone without damaging its surfaces

Use a soft, clean, dry cloth for routine dust and fingerprints. Motorola advises against abrasive cloths, bleach, abrasive cleaners, immersion and spraying cleaner directly on the screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Routine dry cleaning

  1. Close the phone if the outside needs cleaning, then open it when you need to inspect the inner display.
  2. Use a clean, soft cloth with light pressure. Move across the display rather than scrubbing the crease.
  3. Use a separate clean section of cloth for the hinge and outer shell so grit from the hinge is not dragged across the display.
  4. Check the cloth for trapped particles before continuing. Replace or wash a dirty cloth instead of rubbing harder.

Disinfecting with isopropyl alcohol

For disinfecting, Motorola permits wipes or cloths moistened with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Apply the moisture to the wipe or cloth, not directly to the phone, and wipe gently. Keep liquid away from ports, seams, speakers, microphones and the hinge opening. Do not immerse the phone or allow cleaner to pool along the crease.

Let the surfaces dry completely before folding the phone or connecting a charger. If a liquid enters an opening, stop using that area and follow the manufacturer’s support guidance rather than trying to flush it out.

Understand water and dust resistance as a limited feature

Whether a particular foldable carries an IP rating depends on the model. Even when a rating is published, Motorola describes such results as controlled laboratory tests, says resistance decreases with wear, and states that the phone is not waterproof or dustproof. Seals, adhesives and moving parts can age, and a drop or scratch can change the phone’s protection.

Situations to avoid

  • Pressurized water from a tap, shower or hose.
  • Salt water, pool water and liquids other than fresh water.
  • Prolonged exposure to rain, splashes or high humidity.
  • Closing or opening the phone while liquid or grit is present in the hinge.
  • Charging while the phone, cable or port is wet.

If the phone gets wet, disconnect power, wipe the exterior gently and leave it open in a dry, ventilated place while following the model’s support instructions. Do not use heat, insert objects into ports or assume that a previous water-resistance test guarantees protection after wear or impact.

What to do when the protector, hinge or screen is damaged

A lifted or bubbling inner protector

Stop picking at the edge. Do not peel it back, trim it or apply household tape. Google says that removing or peeling the pre-installed protector can cause damage, and Samsung states that damage caused by user or unauthorized screen-protector removal is outside its standard warranty terms. Contact the phone manufacturer or an authorized service provider and ask for the approved replacement process for your model and region.

A hinge that feels gritty, stiff or uneven

Do not force the hinge through its range and do not insert a pin, card or brush into the mechanism. Close the phone only if it can close normally without resistance and keep it away from further dust. Arrange an inspection through the manufacturer or an authorized repair service, especially if the change followed a drop, liquid exposure or visible case displacement.

A cracked shell, puncture or display mark after a drop

Close the phone carefully if the hinge still moves normally, remove it from pockets containing hard objects and inspect for sharp fragments. Do not press a damaged flexible display or continue folding it if the screen is delaminating, flickering or exposing an edge. Back up important data when the phone is stable, then seek authorized support. A phone that still works can have compromised water-repellent features or hidden hinge damage.

Build a maintenance routine that catches problems early

Protection is easier when checks are tied to ordinary events rather than remembered only after an accident.

  • Before closing: inspect both inner halves and the hinge for grit or objects.
  • After outdoor use: wipe away dust with a soft, dry cloth before putting the phone in a pocket or bag.
  • After a drop: test folding, buttons, cameras, speakers, charging and wireless charging without forcing anything; look for case movement or screen lifting.
  • When changing cases: clean the phone and case separately so particles are not trapped against the hinge or display.
  • Before charging: ensure the port and cable are dry and unobstructed.
  • When the protector changes: stop home repairs and use the manufacturer’s or an authorized service channel.

Keep the case interior clean as well. A case can collect sand along its rails and then grind that material against the phone every time it shifts.

Case-selection checklist

Use this checklist when comparing two cases for the same foldable:

  • Does it list the exact model and generation?
  • Does the hinge protection match your exposure to dust and drops without reducing folding clearance?
  • Does it provide a secure grip and edge cushioning while remaining practical for your pocket or bag?
  • Are buttons, microphones, speakers, cameras, vents and the charging port accessible?
  • Does the phone open and close fully with no rubbing, binding or shifting?
  • Does it work with your wireless charger and other accessories?
  • Could its adhesive, hinge flap or inner edge trap grit against the phone?

If any answer is uncertain, test the case before removing protective packaging or committing to long-term use. Exact fit and unobstructed movement matter more than a generic thickness or ruggedness label.

Common mistakes and the safer alternative

  • Peeling the factory film because it has a small bubble: leave it in place and arrange authorized replacement.
  • Using a glass protector made for a flat phone: use only an inner-display protector explicitly approved for the foldable model.
  • Closing the phone on a card or coin: clear both halves and the hinge before folding.
  • Blowing compressed air into the hinge: use gentle, approved cleaning and professional service for embedded debris.
  • Spraying cleaner on the display: moisten a cloth or wipe and keep liquid away from openings.
  • Reading an IP rating as “waterproof”: avoid pressure, salt water, prolonged exposure and charging while wet.
  • Keeping a case that shifts: replace it with a model-specific design that stays aligned through repeated folding.
  • Assuming a working phone is undamaged after a drop: check the hinge, case alignment and displays, then seek service for unusual resistance or marks.

When professional service is the right choice

Use the manufacturer, a manufacturer-authorized service provider or a qualified independent repair professional for inner-screen protector replacement, hinge inspection and other work that requires opening the phone. Google recommends its own support, a Google service provider or an independent repair professional for battery replacement and support; the same principle is sensible for foldable parts that affect the hinge and flexible display. Ask about regional availability, the exact replacement part and warranty terms before authorizing work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not trade a small cosmetic concern for a larger repair by experimenting with the film, hinge or adhesives. Foldable components are interdependent: an alteration that seems harmless when the phone is open can create pressure when it closes.

A practical protection setup

For most owners, the best setup is straightforward: a correctly fitted case with enough edge and, where useful, hinge coverage; a dedicated pocket free of hard objects; a quick debris check before every fold; gentle dry cleaning; and manufacturer-approved service for the factory protector or hinge. Add extra caution in sandy, dusty or wet environments, and treat any drop as a reason to inspect the hinge rather than merely checking whether the phone still boots.

This approach protects the parts that make a foldable different without adding accessories that can create new pressure, clearance or debris problems.
