Keep a foldable phone away from sand and dusty environments, close it before carrying it in those conditions, and inspect the gap between the displays before every fold. Wipe only accessible surfaces with a clean, soft cloth. Do not assume an IP rating or a protective case makes the hinge dustproof: protection varies by model, and even Samsung’s IP48-rated foldables are described as not completely dustproof.
What to do first
Foldable phones need a more cautious routine than conventional slab phones because they have a moving hinge, two display surfaces and a folding gap where a hard particle can become trapped. The safest everyday approach is exposure control rather than trying to seal or flush the mechanism.
- Move the phone away from beaches, dusty work areas, loose soil and other gritty environments whenever practical.
- Close the phone before putting it into a pocket, purse or bag in a sandy or dusty place.
- Keep coins, keys and other abrasive objects in a separate pocket.
- Look across both display surfaces before closing the phone.
- Wipe reachable exterior areas with a clean, soft cloth.
- Never force the phone closed if it meets resistance.
These steps reduce the chance that a particle will scratch a screen, dent a surface or interfere with hinge operation. They do not make a foldable impervious to fine dust.

No universal “dustproof” answer applies. The exact model and its official care instructions control what its rating means. Samsung’s support guidance states: “For IP48-rated devices, dust resistance is limited and does not mean the device is completely dust-proof.” That is a warning against treating IP48 as a sealed hinge or a license to use the phone in sand.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
An IP code describes defined laboratory protection levels, not every real-world particle or situation. A phone can pass a stated test and still be vulnerable to grit that is smaller, sharper, or introduced repeatedly. Wear, a damaged exterior, an improperly fitted accessory or debris trapped during folding can also change the practical risk.
How to interpret IP48 and IPX8 ratings
The letters and numbers in an IP rating address separate hazards. The first character after “IP” concerns solids; the second concerns water. An “X” means no solid-particle protection level is stated in that position, not that the phone is dust resistant.
| Rating context | What the cited guidance establishes | What you should not infer |
|---|---|---|
| IP48 | Samsung describes limited resistance to solid particles and explicitly says the device is not completely dustproof. Samsung UK describes the solid-object test for Fold7 and Flip7 as covering objects larger than 1 mm. | It does not prove that fine dust or sand is harmless, nor that the hinge is sealed. |
| IPX8 | The “8” refers to water protection under specified conditions. Samsung lists several earlier Fold and Flip generations as IPX8. | IPX8 by itself does not state a dust or solid-object protection level. |
| No published solid rating | The manufacturer has not provided the reader with a stated solid-particle level in the cited material. | Do not fill the gap by assuming the phone is dust resistant because it is a newer foldable or because a case covers part of it. |
Samsung’s current care page lists IP48-rated Galaxy Z Fold6, Galaxy Z Flip6, Galaxy Z Fold7, Galaxy Z Flip7 and later models shown on that page. It lists several previous Fold and Flip generations as IPX8. The page can change as models are added, so check the official support page for the exact model rather than applying the newest rating to an older device.
Samsung UK says its Fold7 and Flip7 solid-object test applies to objects greater than 1 mm and separately describes a freshwater immersion test. That qualification matters: a test threshold is not a statement that every smaller particle is blocked, and it is not permission to use the phone at a beach or pool.
Why sand and dust are especially risky
Small particles can be harder on a foldable than ordinary household lint. Samsung warns that sand and other small particles may scratch or dent screens and may affect hinge and device performance, including on IP48-rated devices. A grain can act as an abrasive when the phone is handled, or become a hard obstruction between the displays when the phone is closed.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Repeated exposure also increases the number of opportunities for contamination. A single brief encounter is not a measurable guarantee of damage, and no independently published rate of dust-related foldable damage is established in the cited material. The sensible decision is therefore to reduce exposure rather than calculate a supposedly safe number of grains or minutes.
Use a simple exposure routine
Before entering a gritty environment
- Close the phone fully before putting it in a pocket or bag.
- Choose a compartment that does not contain coins, keys, sand or other abrasive items.
- If you are working around loose dust, keep the phone out of the immediate work area instead of leaving it open beside the task.
While the phone is exposed
- Avoid opening the device unless you need the larger screen.
- Do not place either display face-down on a dusty or sandy surface.
- Keep the phone away from blowing grit and from pockets or bags that already contain debris.
When you leave
- Move to a clean area before opening the phone.
- Brush loose debris away from the outside with a clean, soft cloth rather than pushing it toward the hinge or display gap.
- Inspect both screens before opening and again before closing.
Closing the device for transport limits the exposed display area, but it does not create a dust seal. Particles already inside the folding area remain a concern.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck the display gap before every fold
Samsung warns that cards, coins, keys and other objects trapped between the screens can damage the main display. Debris does not need to be large to create a problem if it is hard enough or positioned over a vulnerable area.
- Hold the phone in good light.
- Scan the full inner display, including the edges and the area near the hinge.
- Remove any visible object before starting the fold.
- Begin closing gently and stop immediately if the two halves do not move normally.
Never use the folding action to crush or push a particle out. If resistance remains after you have removed visible material, leave the phone open or in its normal resting position and follow the manufacturer’s support process. Forcing the hinge can turn a removable obstruction into screen or hinge damage.
How to wipe dust safely
Use only an accessible-surface method
The reviewed Samsung care instructions recommend a clean, soft cloth. Use it on reachable exterior surfaces and display areas, with light pressure. A cloth is for removing loose material from a surface you can see; it is not a probe for the hinge or the narrow gap between display halves.

- For the inner display, open the phone only after checking that no grit is pressing against the screen, then wipe the accessible surface gently.
- Look again under good lighting before folding or storing the device.
Clean around a removable case
If dust has collected beneath removable case pieces, Samsung says those pieces may be removed so the device can be wiped. Follow the case maker’s removal instructions, lift the pieces carefully, wipe the exposed phone and case, and refit them only after both are free of loose debris. A case can reduce scratches from ordinary handling, but the cited guidance does not establish that any case seals a hinge or prevents particle ingress.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do not improvise a hinge-cleaning tool
The reviewed manufacturer instructions do not provide a procedure for cleaning inside a foldable hinge. They do not establish the use of a brush, pick, cloth corner, compressed air nozzle or other object inserted into the hinge. Avoid inserting anything into that mechanism. If dust is visibly inside, the hinge feels rough, the phone no longer opens evenly or the display shows a new problem, use the manufacturer’s service or support route instead of probing farther.
Screen protectors, films and stickers
Foldable displays are engineered to bend, so an accessory that is acceptable on a rigid phone may be unsuitable here. Samsung advises users not to remove the factory screen protector or install other films or stickers on certain foldable screens because doing so can cause damage. This instruction is model-specific: check the exact device’s support page before replacing, lifting or adding any film.
A film marketed as “dust sealing” is not evidence that the hinge is sealed. Treat any accessory claim as separate from the phone’s official IP rating and verify exact-model fit before installation.
What the hinge design does—and does not—guarantee
Foldable manufacturers use different hinge structures, so one model’s construction cannot be generalized to every foldable. Samsung Support UK says of the Fold3 and Flip3: “Hinges applied with sweeper fibres decrease the influx of foreign substances, however, they do not guarantee dust resistance.” That statement belongs to those models and should not be read as a description of all current designs.

The same manufacturer history reports that Fold3 and Flip3 displays withstood over 200,000 folds in Samsung testing. This is a manufacturer fold-cycle test claim for those models, not a statistic about dust damage and not a promise that a hinge will remain particle-free after that many folds in the field.
Choosing and using a case
A case is optional carry protection, not a dust-proofing certification. Match it to the exact phone model and check that it does not interfere with the hinge, alignment, buttons, charging port or the manufacturer’s screen-protector guidance.
| Case question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does it fit the exact model? | Fold dimensions, hinge geometry and display clearances vary between generations and between Fold-style and Flip-style phones. |
| Does it cover the hinge? | Coverage may shield the exterior from some contact, but the cited sources do not establish that a covered hinge is sealed against dust. |
| Can debris collect beneath removable pieces? | Particles trapped there can rub against the phone; remove the pieces and wipe the device when needed. |
| Does installation add a film or adhesive? | Some foldable displays have model-specific restrictions on films and stickers. Follow the phone maker’s instructions first. |
Inspect the case after a dusty outing. A case that is itself full of grit can transfer that grit back to the phone whenever it is removed or adjusted.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Situations that need extra caution
Beach, desert and construction environments
Loose sand and airborne dust combine abrasion with repeated movement. Keep the phone closed and stored away from the activity. Samsung’s UK guidance warns against beach or pool use even while describing specified IP testing.
Work clothing and bags
Pockets accumulate lint and grit, while keys and coins can become hard point loads. Use a separate, clean compartment and inspect it before storing the phone.

Cleaning after a dusty event
Do not open and close the device repeatedly to “work” particles out. Move to a clean area, wipe accessible surfaces, check the display gap and stop if the hinge feels abnormal.
Symptoms that should end home cleaning
- The phone stops short of closing or opening.
- One half sits unevenly or the hinge feels gritty, catches or makes a new noise.
- A visible particle remains inside the hinge or cannot be reached without an implement.
- The inner display develops a line, dent, pressure mark or new touch problem after an obstruction was trapped.
- A case or screen accessory has shifted, lifted or begun pressing on the display.
These signs call for the manufacturer’s support or authorized service guidance. Do not force the hinge, peel off a factory protector or insert a tool while trying to recover the phone yourself.
A practical model-by-model checklist
Before relying on any dust advice, record the exact model name and consult its official support page. Then answer these questions:
- Does the page list IP48, IPX8 or no solid-particle rating?
- If it lists IP48, what solid-object size and test conditions are stated?
- Are there model-specific instructions about the factory screen protector, films or stickers?
- What cleaning method does the manufacturer authorize?
- What service route applies if debris is inside the hinge or the phone no longer folds normally?
This check prevents a common error: borrowing the rating or cleaning directions of a newer or different foldable and assuming they apply to yours.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling IPX8 dustproof: the “X” provides no stated solid-particle level.
- Treating IP48 as a sealed mechanism: Samsung explicitly describes its dust resistance as limited.
- Folding over a grain: inspect the space between screens first.
- Using a key, pin, brush or cloth corner in the hinge: no such internal-cleaning procedure is established in the cited care guidance.
- Assuming a hinge-covering case blocks ingress: coverage is not the same as a tested dust seal.
- Removing the factory protector casually: Samsung warns that removal or adding an unapproved film can damage certain foldable screens.
- Using a damage statistic that does not exist: no independent incidence rate for dust-related foldable damage is established in the cited material.
The safest maintenance schedule
Every time you carry the phone in dust
- Close it before storage.
- Separate it from keys, coins and abrasive materials.
- Wipe accessible exterior surfaces after leaving the area.
Every time you fold it
- Check both displays and the hinge-side gap.
- Remove visible objects before applying any folding pressure.
Whenever the case is removed
- Inspect for grit underneath removable case pieces.
- Wipe the phone and case with a clean, soft cloth before refitting.
Whenever behavior changes
- Stop forcing movement.
- Do not probe the hinge.
- Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
Bottom line for owners
Protect a foldable phone from dust by preventing exposure, transporting it closed, keeping abrasive objects separate and checking the display gap before every fold. Clean only surfaces you can safely reach with a clean, soft cloth. IP48 can provide limited solid-particle resistance on specified models, while IPX8 addresses water rather than dust; neither rating makes every foldable dustproof. A case may help with ordinary carry protection, but it should never replace model-specific care instructions or be treated as a hinge seal.
