Protecting Bitcoin during a crash requires two separate plans. A custody plan keeps attackers, device loss and seed-phrase mistakes from taking the coins; a market-risk plan keeps debt, bills or leverage from forcing you to sell while prices are falling. A hardware wallet addresses the first problem, not the second.
Keep emergency money outside Bitcoin, avoid leverage for long-term holdings, separate spending funds from savings, and write down your rebalancing or sale rules before a panic begins. A normal spot wallet does not liquidate itself; forced closure is associated with margined or leveraged positions.
What can and cannot be protected?
Bitcoin’s market price can rise or fall unpredictably over short periods. Bitcoin.org advises that you should never store money in Bitcoin that you cannot afford to lose. No wallet type can prevent a market decline, guarantee a selling price or create instant liquidity when an exchange is unavailable.

A wallet controls signing keys. If an attacker obtains those keys or your recovery phrase, the coins can be moved. If you lose the recovery phrase, a device failure or software loss can make recovery impossible. The most useful plan therefore has two layers:
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
- Market-risk controls: cash reserves, no borrowing for savings, and written rules for rebalancing or partial sales.
- Custody controls: a spending wallet for small amounts, offline storage for savings, private backups and, where appropriate, multiple approvals.
Can a Bitcoin wallet be liquidated?
Spot Bitcoin in a self-custody wallet
Bitcoin held in an ordinary spot wallet is not a margin position. The wallet software does not issue a margin call and cannot sell the coins merely because the market price falls. A person can still choose to sell, lose access to the keys, or send coins to an attacker, but those are different events from exchange liquidation.
Leveraged and margined positions
Forced selling is associated with borrowed funds, derivatives and other margined positions. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) warns that when markets move against a customer’s position, the customer may have to replenish the margin account or the position may be closed. The loss can exceed the initial investment.
Removing leverage from the portion of Bitcoin intended as savings is the clearest way to remove this particular liquidation path. A derivative used as a hedge is an advanced instrument with margin, liquidation, slippage, expiration and counterparty risks. The CFTC describes futures and options as instruments intended to help hedgers manage volatility; that purpose is not a promise of profit or protection in every market.
Custodial account closures are different
A custodian or exchange may restrict withdrawals, suspend an account or become insolvent. Those are counterparty and operational risks, not an automatic liquidation of a self-custody wallet. Read the provider’s withdrawal, bankruptcy and compliance terms before leaving savings there.
Build a financial buffer before a crash
Keep near-term obligations in conventional liquidity
Hold rent, taxes, debt payments and an emergency reserve in conventional cash or other assets appropriate to your circumstances. This buffer prevents a Bitcoin drawdown from turning an unpaid bill into a forced sale.
There is no universally correct Bitcoin allocation, emergency-fund percentage or stop-loss level established by the cited authorities. The right amount depends on income stability, debts, jurisdiction, tax treatment, time horizon and ability to tolerate losses. Treat any fixed percentage presented as a personal rule, not a general safety standard.

Write rules while you are calm
Decide in advance what a sale or rebalance is meant to accomplish. A written policy can specify which expenses are paid from cash, when a position is reduced, and which circumstances permit an exception. Define the rule in plain language, record the date and assumptions, and keep a copy separate from the wallet backup.

Pre-committed rules reduce the chance that a headline, a social-media post or a temporary price move becomes an impulsive all-or-nothing decision. They also make it easier to involve a trusted person or financial professional without handing that person your keys.
Separate spending funds from savings
Bitcoin.org recommends keeping only small amounts on a computer or mobile device for everyday use and moving the remainder to a safer environment. Apply that principle operationally:
- Estimate the amount needed for ordinary payments over a short period.
- Keep only that amount in a hot wallet or other frequently used application.
- Store the remainder in a dedicated savings wallet that is not connected to routine browsing, browser extensions or exchange accounts.
- Replenish the spending wallet deliberately rather than exposing the full balance each time you transact.
This arrangement limits the value exposed if a phone, computer or everyday application is compromised. It does not change Bitcoin’s price, and it does not remove the need for a recovery backup.
Use offline storage for long-term savings
Bitcoin.org describes an offline wallet, also called cold storage, as providing the highest security for savings and identifies hardware wallets as a balance between very high security and ease of use. An offline Bitcoin wallet keeps signing keys away from many online attack paths while allowing you to approve a transaction when needed.

What a hardware wallet protects
- It protects the private signing keys from many malware and browser-based attacks.
- It keeps the savings balance separate from a phone or computer used every day.
- It provides a controlled signing step before a transaction is broadcast.
What it does not protect
- It cannot stop Bitcoin’s market price from falling.
- It cannot guarantee that an exchange, buyer or network route will be available when you want to sell.
- It cannot recover a seed phrase that was lost, exposed or recorded incorrectly.
- It does not remove the need to understand fees, addresses and transaction verification.
Basic setup procedure
- Obtain a Bitcoin hardware wallet through a source you trust and inspect the packaging and device instructions.
- Initialize it yourself rather than accepting a recovery phrase supplied by another person.
- Write the generated recovery phrase by hand, in the displayed order, and check every word.
- Set a device PIN and keep it separate from the recovery phrase.
- Install only the wallet software required for the device, verify the receiving address on the device screen, and send a small test amount first.
- Move the savings balance only after the test transaction is confirmed and the backup has been checked.
The exact menus differ by device and software version. Never type a recovery phrase into a website, email, support chat or ordinary computer file.

Protect the recovery phrase
The Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor Bulletin explains that a seed phrase is a random sequence of words that can restore a wallet after the device or software is lost. It is the recovery key: anyone who obtains it can generally control the funds, while losing it can make the funds unrecoverable.
Backup rules
- Keep the phrase private; legitimate support staff do not need it.
- Store more than one copy in separate secure physical locations so one fire, flood or theft does not destroy every copy.
- Use durable storage media. A metal seed-phrase backup is an accessory category designed to withstand conditions that can destroy paper.
- Do not photograph the phrase, upload it to cloud storage or leave it in an unencrypted text file.
- Tell an inheritance or emergency contact where the backup process is documented without revealing the words themselves.
Bitcoin.org recommends encrypted backups, multiple secure locations and durable media. Encryption can protect a digital backup, but the decryption secret must be preserved and kept separate; an unreadable backup is not a recovery plan.
Consider multisignature approval for larger balances
Bitcoin.org describes multisignature wallets that require several independent approvals, such as a 3-of-5 arrangement. A single compromised device or location then does not automatically provide enough approvals to spend.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →When multisignature helps
- Several trusted people or locations can hold separate signing devices.
- A thief who finds one device or one backup still lacks the required number of approvals.
- An organization can separate operational roles instead of relying on one key holder.
The trade-off
Multisignature increases setup, documentation and recovery complexity. You must preserve the wallet configuration, identify every signer and test a recovery process before funds are moved. Losing too many signers or their records can make a valid balance difficult to spend. Use it only when the security benefit justifies the operational burden.
Should you move Bitcoin to cash or a stablecoin?
Moving some Bitcoin to cash can reduce exposure to a further price decline and provide spending liquidity. It also realizes a sale that may have tax consequences and may leave you exposed to inflation or the opportunity cost of a later recovery. The decision belongs in the written policy you made before the crash, not in a universal rule.
A stablecoin is not the same as conventional cash or a self-custodied Bitcoin balance. Holding one can add issuer, platform, withdrawal, regulatory and depeg risks, depending on the asset and jurisdiction. The cited authorities do not establish a stablecoin allocation or guarantee its value. If you use one, evaluate it as a separate custodial and market exposure, keep only an amount you can tolerate losing, and document how it can be redeemed.

Self-custody and custodial services compared
Neither model is universally safer. The relevant question is which risks you can manage consistently.
| Consideration | Self-custody | Custodial service |
|---|---|---|
| Forced liquidation exposure | No margin liquidation in a normal spot wallet; leverage elsewhere can still create forced closure. | Depends on the account terms and whether borrowing or derivatives are enabled. |
| Counterparty and solvency risk | Not dependent on an exchange’s solvency, but the owner bears key-management risk. | Provider solvency, operations, bankruptcy treatment and withdrawal policy matter. |
| Recovery responsibility | The owner must protect the seed phrase, backups and wallet configuration. | The provider handles key operations, but account access and its recovery process become critical. |
| Liquidity and access | Transactions can be authorized directly, subject to network and fee conditions. | Withdrawals can be delayed, limited or suspended by the provider. |
| Setup complexity | Higher: device initialization, backups and possibly multisignature coordination. | Lower at first, but identity checks, account security and provider procedures apply. |
| Privacy | The owner controls where keys are held, while transactions remain publicly visible on the Bitcoin network. | The provider may collect identity and transaction information under its legal obligations. |
| Legal and regulatory treatment | Responsibilities and protections depend on local law and the owner’s records. | Protections, segregation, bankruptcy treatment and availability vary by jurisdiction and provider. |
| Total cost | Device, backup and recovery-management costs, plus transaction fees. | Service, withdrawal, trading or spread charges may apply under the provider’s terms. |
FINMA guidance dated January 12, 2026 emphasizes robust infrastructure, monitoring and bankruptcy protection for crypto-asset safekeeping. A U.S. banking-agency statement dated July 14, 2025 likewise discusses risk management for crypto-asset custody. These documents do not make every provider equivalent, and they do not create identical protections in every country.

Before prices move sharply
- Remove borrowed money from the portion designated as savings.
- Confirm that rent, taxes, debt payments and emergency cash are outside Bitcoin.
- Separate the hot spending wallet from the offline savings wallet.
- Verify that the recovery phrase is complete, private and stored in more than one secure location.
- Record the written sale or rebalancing policy and the tax records needed to follow it.
- For multisignature storage, confirm that every signer knows the recovery procedure without sharing another signer’s key.
During a rapid decline
- Check whether you hold spot Bitcoin or a leveraged or margined position.
- If a margin position exists, read the provider’s maintenance-margin and liquidation rules immediately; do not assume a hardware wallet changes them.
- Pause new transfers until you can verify the destination address and the reason for the transaction.
- Use the cash buffer for ordinary bills instead of selling savings impulsively.
- Apply the pre-written policy. If circumstances have genuinely changed, document the change and its reason rather than reacting to a single price candle.
After the market stabilizes
- Review whether the cash buffer, leverage decision and wallet separation still match your circumstances.
- Check backups and device access without exposing the recovery phrase.
- Reconcile transactions and preserve records for local tax reporting.
- Update the plan only after a deliberate review, not as a prediction about the next move.
Common failure modes and fixes
“My hardware wallet will stop losses.”
It will not. It protects keys, not market value. Add a cash reserve and a written exposure policy.
“My spot wallet was liquidated.”
Check whether the balance was actually in a margin, futures or lending account. A normal spot wallet does not create an exchange margin call by itself.
“Support asked for my seed phrase.”
Do not provide it. End the conversation and contact the provider through its verified support channel. Anyone with the phrase can generally control the wallet.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“I backed up the device, so I am covered.”
A device backup is not necessarily a recovery-phrase backup. Confirm that the words, order and wallet configuration required for recovery are preserved privately.

Hardware wallet and backup setup: what to evaluate
When choosing a Bitcoin hardware wallet, compare the security model, supported Bitcoin functions, recovery process, physical durability, software maintenance and the ease of independently verifying addresses. For the backup, compare private storage, resistance to fire and water, the ability to make multiple copies and the process for destroying a compromised copy.
Current brands, prices, geographic availability and affiliate eligibility change over time. Treat product claims as details to verify at purchase; the underlying principles remain the same: offline signing for savings, a private recovery phrase, more than one secure location and a tested recovery procedure.
Personal decision framework
Use these questions before deciding whether to hold, sell, move or restructure Bitcoin:
- Could a price decline or a delayed withdrawal prevent me from paying an essential bill?
- Is any part of the position borrowed, margined or pledged under terms that permit forced closure?
- Which funds are for daily spending, and which are genuinely long-term savings?
- Can I recover the wallet if the device is destroyed without exposing the phrase today?
- Would another trusted person be able to follow the documented recovery or inheritance process?
- What tax, reporting and regulatory consequences apply where I live?
- Am I changing the plan because my circumstances changed, or because a short-term price move created fear?
If the answers show that a sale is needed for liquidity or risk control, execute the written plan and keep the records. If the answers show only a custody weakness, fix the wallet and backup architecture rather than selling solely because the price moved.
