Short answer: there is no currently documented, supported SDK or installation procedure for putting a home-made game on either the original Nokia 3310 or the later phone sold under the same name. You can, however, build a faithful 3310-style game for a web browser with HTML, JavaScript and Canvas. Treat that result as a browser game or visual recreation unless you have separately verified a native toolchain for your exact handset and firmware.
The name “Nokia 3310” covers two very different targets. The original early-2000s handset and HMD Global’s redesigned model do not have interchangeable development environments. The practical tutorial below therefore shows the documented browser route, then explains what is and is not established about native development.
First decide which Nokia 3310 you mean
Before choosing a language or downloading a compiler, identify the device you want to target. The original handset is a monochrome feature phone from the early 2000s. HMD Global’s later Nokia 3310 is a redesigned product with a color screen, a custom interface and a built-in updated Snake game. A shared product name does not imply shared firmware, APIs or game-loading methods.

The later HMD model
HMD’s product overview describes the later phone as a reimagined Nokia 3310 with a custom-designed interface and an updated Snake game. Its regional technical-specification page lists Nokia Series 30+ as the operating system. For the model described on that page, the published hardware is:
#1 Best Overall
- Bluetooth Music Player: The smallest phone can be used as a Bluetooth music player, providing clear sound, and can also be used as a Bluetooth headset for calls.
- Low Radiation: The radiation rate of the mini key phone is 1/7 lower than that of regular smartphones, making it the best choice for protecting pregnant women and babies from signal radiation.
- Triple SIM Standby: The world's smallest Bluetooth mini phone supports three SIM cards Nano SIM cards (or 2 SIM cards and 1 storage card) (not included).
- GSM Band: The smallest phone is compatible with GSM 850, 900, 1800, and 1900MHz (supports 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G SIM cards, but must support 2G GSM frequency).
- Voice Changer: The smallest unlocked phone comes with a voice changer that allows you to change your voice during calls (this feature requires a SIM card).
| Specification | Published value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 2.4-inch QVGA | HMD’s listed later model; not a specification for the original handset |
| RAM | 16 MB | Manufacturer specification for the listed regional model |
| Internal storage | 16 MB | Manufacturer specification for the listed regional model |
| Battery | 1,200 mAh, removable | Manufacturer specification for the listed regional model |
| Connector | Micro-USB 2.0 | Its presence does not document a software sideload mechanism |
| Card support | microSD up to 32 GB | Storage expansion, not evidence of executable-code installation |
| Operating system | Nokia Series 30+ | As listed by HMD for that product page |
Those specifications describe the later phone only. The official pages do not describe a public game SDK, a source-code loader, a supported compiler, or a procedure for installing a custom game. That is the boundary of the available documentation; it is not a claim that no undocumented enthusiast modification has ever existed.
The original handset
The original 3310 belongs to a different hardware and firmware generation. The material available here does not establish its compiler, runtime API, development kit, cable protocol or a legal, repeatable homebrew-installation process. Do not assume that a program written for another Nokia feature phone, a Java game, or the later Series 30+ model will run on it.
Which programming route is actually supported by the evidence?
| Route | What you can build | What is not established | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser recreation | HTML and JavaScript game with Nokia-inspired controls, monochrome artwork and a small logical display | Installation or execution on a physical 3310 | Learning, prototyping, portfolios and playable web demos |
| Later Nokia 3310 | Games already included by the manufacturer, including the updated Snake | Public SDK, custom-game sideloading and a supported source-transfer workflow | Using the phone as sold, not developing for it |
| Historical Nokia Java tooling | Connected Java mobile games in the era covered by Nokia’s announcement | Compatibility with either Nokia 3310 generation or current support | Historical research, not a present-day 3310 tutorial |
The remainder of this guide uses the first route. It produces a real, playable game in a modern browser without pretending that the output is firmware or a native handset application.
Build a 3310-style game in HTML and JavaScript
A useful reference is the independent “Snake · 3310 Edition” project. Its documentation describes a clean-room recreation rather than firmware emulation. It offers Canvas 2D and WebGPU renderers and models an 84 × 48 one-bit logical framebuffer. That 84 × 48 value belongs to the recreation’s display model; it is not a measurement that should be assigned to every Nokia 3310 display.
1. Create a minimal project
Make a directory containing an index.html file. You need only a text editor and a current desktop or mobile browser. No phone, special cable or paid development package is required for this browser route.
<!doctype html>
<html lang='en'>
<head>
<meta charset='utf-8'>

const scoreLabel = document.querySelector('#score');
const W = canvas.width, H = canvas.height;

const colors = { off: '#9bbc0f', on: '#0f380f' };
let snake, food, direction, queued, score, gameOver, last = 0, accumulator = 0;
function reset() {
snake = [{x: 42, y: 24}, {x: 41, y: 24}, {x: 40, y: 24}];

queued = direction;

}
function placeFood() {

queued = next;
}
function tick() {
if (gameOver) return;
direction = queued;
const head = {x: snake[0].x + direction.x, y: snake[0].y + direction.y};
const hitWall = head.x < 0 || head.x >= W || head.y < 0 || head.y >= H;
const hitSelf = snake.some(p => p.x === head.x && p.y === head.y);
if (hitWall || hitSelf) { gameOver = true; announce(); return; }
snake.unshift(head);
if (head.x === food.x && head.y === food.y) { score++; placeFood(); }
else snake.pop();
announce();
}
function announce() { scoreLabel.textContent = gameOver ? `Game over — score: ${score}. Press R.` : `Score: ${score}`; }
function draw() {
ctx.fillStyle = colors.off; ctx.fillRect(0, 0, W, H);
ctx.fillStyle = colors.on; ctx.fillRect(food.x, food.y, 1, 1);
snake.forEach((p, i) => ctx.fillRect(p.x, p.y, 1, 1));
}
function frame(time) {
if (!last) last = time;
accumulator += Math.min(time - last, 250); last = time;
while (accumulator >= stepMs) { tick(); accumulator -= stepMs; }
draw(); requestAnimationFrame(frame);
}
addEventListener('keydown', event => {
const keys = {ArrowUp:'up', ArrowDown:'down', ArrowLeft:'left', ArrowRight:'right'};
if (keys[event.key]) { event.preventDefault(); setDirection(keys[event.key]); }
if (event.key.toLowerCase() === 'r') reset();
});
document.querySelectorAll('[data-dir]').forEach(button => {
button.addEventListener('click', () => setDirection(button.dataset.dir));
});
reset(); requestAnimationFrame(frame);
</script>
</body>
</html>
2. Understand the display model
The canvas is deliberately 84 pixels wide by 48 pixels high. CSS enlarges it while image-rendering: pixelated keeps each logical pixel hard-edged. The two-color palette makes the visual language feel like a constrained monochrome display without claiming to reproduce a handset’s physical panel.
Keeping game coordinates in logical pixels separates game rules from presentation. You can later render the same state at a different scale, draw a bezel around it, or add a second renderer without rewriting collision logic.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →3. Keep the game loop deterministic
The example advances state every 120 milliseconds instead of moving once per animation frame. requestAnimationFrame is used only for drawing. This fixed interval prevents faster monitors or slower phones from changing the game’s rules. The accumulator is capped at 250 milliseconds so a tab that was suspended does not execute an uncontrolled burst of moves when it becomes visible again.
4. Model input as commands
Keyboard arrows and the four on-screen buttons both call setDirection. The function rejects an immediate 180-degree turn, matching the usual Snake rule and preventing the head from reversing into the neck between ticks. If you add touch swipes, convert each swipe into one of the same four direction names rather than modifying the movement code.
5. Add the essential game rules
- The snake is an ordered array whose first element is the head.
- Each tick creates a new head one cell away in the current direction.
- Leaving the 84 × 48 bounds or entering an occupied cell ends the game.
- Eating food increases the score and leaves the tail in place, growing the snake by one cell.
- Otherwise the tail is removed, preserving the snake’s length.
Rand the reset function create a new run without reloading the page.
These rules are intentionally small. Add sound, title screens, high-score storage or obstacles only after the core loop behaves consistently.

- Long Battery Life: Get up to 24 hours of talk time on a single charge.
- Colorful Display: Features a 2.4-inch LCD screen with polarized layer for better readability.
- Classic Snake Game: Play the iconic Snake game with a modern look and feel.
- Camera: Capture photos and videos with the 2MP rear camera and LED flash.
- Connectivity: Stay connected with Bluetooth 2.1, Micro USB, and WiFi capabilities.
Run and test the browser game
- Save the file as
index.html, preserving the extension rather than saving it as a text document. - Open the file in a current browser. The title, score, canvas and direction buttons should appear immediately.
- Press an arrow key or a direction button. The snake should move at a steady rhythm, and the score should increase when it reaches the food.
- Drive into a wall or the snake’s body. The score line should change to a game-over message; press
Rto start again. - Resize the browser window and rotate a phone. The CSS canvas should scale without changing the 84 × 48 logical coordinate system.
Useful test cases
- Press the opposite direction immediately after starting; the snake should not reverse.
- Hold a key or tap buttons repeatedly; queued input should not create diagonal movement.
- Reload the page and confirm that the initial snake and score are restored.
- Temporarily slow the browser tab, then return to it; the accumulator cap should avoid a long catch-up freeze.
- Use a narrow screen and verify that buttons remain reachable without horizontal scrolling.
Package the result as a web game
For a personal demo, opening the file locally is enough. To share it, publish the single HTML file through any static web host or serve it from a local development server. The deliverable is a web page: it does not become a Series 30+ application merely because its canvas resembles a phone screen.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If you borrow code, graphics or wording from the “Snake · 3310 Edition” project, read that project’s README and follow its stated MIT licensing and attribution terms. Its documentation also explains its Nokia trademark clarification. Your own assets should have their own clear license, and you should avoid implying endorsement by Nokia or HMD.
Improve the recreation without losing the constraint
Once the basic loop works, keep the game’s rules independent from rendering. A small state object can hold the snake, food, direction, score and game-over flag; a renderer can read that state without changing it. This makes it possible to compare Canvas 2D with another renderer while preserving identical movement and collision behavior.
Use integer coordinates throughout the game. Fractional positions introduce blurred edges and make pixel-art collision harder to reason about. Draw the background every frame before drawing food and the snake, so stale pixels cannot remain after the tail moves. Keep the palette deliberately small, and make contrast strong enough for players who are viewing the enlarged canvas on a bright display.
For touch controls, give each button a visible focus state and an adequate hit area. Pointer events can call the same direction function as keyboard events; do not create a second movement implementation. Preventing default behavior for arrow keys avoids scrolling the page while the game has focus. If you add a pause control, pause the simulation clock rather than merely hiding the canvas.
Recommended Free Tools
A high-score feature can use browser storage, but it is optional and belongs to the web version. It should not be described as storage on the Nokia handset. Likewise, sound effects, vibration and WebGPU acceleration are browser capabilities, not evidence that the resulting program can be copied to Series 30+.
Costs, requirements and practical limits
The browser route has no sourced hardware purchase requirement. A text editor, a current browser and a computer or mobile device are sufficient. Hosting can remain local for development; sharing requires only a static web location of your choice. A physical Nokia 3310, Micro-USB cable, microSD card or paid IDE is not required to write or test this HTML game.
Those low requirements apply only to the browser recreation. They do not reduce the uncertainty around native development. A cable may charge a phone or expose ordinary media functions without accepting executable packages. A card may store photos or music without being a launchable application volume. Treat every accessory as unverified until documentation for the exact model says otherwise.
Common mistakes and safety checks
- Confusing the two generations: record the exact model name, regional variant and firmware before looking for tools.
- Assuming Series 30+ means Java: the operating-system label does not establish a Java runtime or a public game API.
- Calling a browser canvas an emulator: the example recreates appearance and rules; it does not emulate handset firmware.
- Using the 84 × 48 figure as a phone specification: it is the logical framebuffer selected by the recreation project.
- Copying assets without checking terms: review the independent project’s MIT notice, attribution language and trademark clarification.
- Flashing unverified files: unknown package formats, signatures and recovery procedures can leave a phone unusable.
- Promising native installation: require model-specific evidence for compiler, runtime, package format, transfer method and recovery before making that claim.
Why a native 3310 tutorial cannot be promised
A native tutorial needs four verified pieces of information: the exact model and firmware, an official or legally usable SDK, a runtime/API contract, and a documented transfer or installation procedure. The available HMD pages provide product descriptions and specifications for the later phone, but none of those development and deployment details.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMicro-USB, removable storage and a Series 30+ label are not, by themselves, evidence that arbitrary executable files can be copied to the phone. Installing a file without knowing the expected package format, signature rules and recovery method could fail or damage the device. For that reason, this guide does not give instructions that claim to flash, sideload or replace either handset’s software.

What the 2008 Java SDK announcement means
On 29 October 2008, Nokia announced SNAP Mobile SDK 2.2 as an end-to-end solution for connected mobile gaming in Java technology. The announcement mentioned a game template and user-interface tools. It is useful historical context for Nokia-era Java development, but it does not identify the original Nokia 3310 or the later HMD model as supported targets. It should not be presented as a current 3310 SDK.
Choose a route with this checklist
- Want a playable project today? Use the HTML/JavaScript browser route and label it a 3310-inspired recreation.
- Want the later phone’s built-in experience? Use the device as shipped; the documented material covers its included software, not custom installation.
- Want to research the original handset? First locate model-specific primary documentation for its processor, compiler, runtime and transfer method. Do not substitute a generic Nokia Java guide.
- Need a native-installation claim for publication? Require evidence tied to the exact model and firmware before stating that a game runs on the phone.
The distinction keeps the practical part honest: you can program and share a convincing 3310-style game now, while native development remains an unresolved, model-specific investigation rather than a documented procedure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install this HTML game on an original Nokia 3310?
No installation path is established here. The example runs in a modern browser; it is not a firmware image, Java package or Series 30+ application.
Can the 2017-era Nokia 3310 run Java games?
The listed HMD specifications identify Nokia Series 30+, but the official pages do not document a public Java game SDK, runtime contract or sideload procedure. Do not assume compatibility.
What does the 84 × 48 resolution represent?
It is the one-bit logical framebuffer used by the independent Snake · 3310 Edition recreation. It is a design choice for that browser project, not a verified measurement for every Nokia 3310 display.
Do I need a Nokia phone or cable to follow the tutorial?
No. A text editor and current browser are enough. A physical handset, Micro-USB cable and microSD card are not required for the browser route.
Why use a fixed 120-millisecond tick?
A fixed simulation interval keeps movement and collision rules consistent across displays and refresh rates. The animation frame callback is used for drawing, not for deciding how far the snake moves.
Can I reuse the independent Snake project’s code?
Check its README first. It identifies MIT licensing for authored code and graphics and includes a Nokia trademark clarification. Preserve required notices and avoid implying endorsement.
Is Nokia’s SNAP Mobile SDK 2.2 the missing 3310 toolchain?
No. Nokia’s 29 October 2008 announcement describes connected Java gaming tools, but it does not establish support for either Nokia 3310 generation.
What would be needed to publish a native-development tutorial?
You would need documentation tied to the exact model and firmware covering a compiler or SDK, runtime/API, package format, transfer or installation method, and a safe recovery procedure.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: build the game as HTML and JavaScript if you want a playable result today. The browser recreation can reproduce keypad-style controls, a limited palette and an 84 × 48 logical screen, but it does not install on a Nokia 3310. HMD’s later phone is documented as a Series 30+ device with a built-in Snake game and specified hardware, not as a handset with a public custom-game SDK. Treat native development as unresolved until model-specific documentation proves otherwise.
