There is no universal “right” price for a membership, subscription, or digital product. Set a price from the outcome you promise, the package you can reliably deliver, and the net amount you need after platform, payment, currency, tax, and payout costs. A recurring offer must give customers a continuing reason to renew; a one-time product must deliver a clearly defined result without pretending that ongoing access is included.
Use your first price as a testable hypothesis. Launch a small number of understandable options, calculate what you actually keep from each sale, then use purchases, renewals, refunds, support time, and net revenue per customer to decide what to change.
Start by deciding what the customer is buying
“Membership,” “subscription,” and “digital product” describe different commitments. The sales structure should follow the value, not the other way around.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Offer type | Customer commitment | What must justify the price | Main delivery obligation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recurring membership or subscription | Repeating payment until the customer cancels | A benefit that continues, such as a fresh edition, live access, ongoing feedback, or an active community | Consistent delivery at the promised cadence, plus access management and cancellation support |
| One-time digital product | One purchase for a defined deliverable | The usefulness of the finished result and the clarity of what is included | Accurate delivery, access instructions, updates promised in the offer, and the stated level of support |
| Bundle or collection | One purchase for several related deliverables | Convenience and a coherent result compared with buying items separately | Keeping every component available and explaining exactly what the collection contains |
| Tiered offer | A choice among packages with different benefits | A visible, meaningful difference between tiers | Delivering each tier without creating unmanageable complexity |
A recurring payment is not automatically more valuable than a one-time sale. It is appropriate when your work, access, or service continues over time. A self-contained course, template pack, report, or software asset is usually easier for a buyer to understand as a one-time purchase. You can offer both, but explain whether the subscription adds new material, support, community access, or another continuing benefit.

Step 1: Define the promise before choosing a number
Describe the audience and the outcome
Write one sentence that names the intended customer, the problem, and the result. For example: “Independent consultants receive a new client-acquisition teardown each month and can ask questions in a private discussion.” The sentence identifies an ongoing outcome rather than a post count.
For a one-time product, make the result finite: “A set of editable project-planning templates that helps a small team create a launch plan in one afternoon.” The buyer should be able to tell what they will have after purchase and what they will still need to do themselves.
Specify what is included
List the actual components before setting the price:
- The format and number of files, lessons, editions, or sessions.
- Whether access is permanent, time-limited, or dependent on an active subscription.
- When new material arrives and whether earlier material remains available.
- Updates, revisions, or version upgrades you intend to provide.
- Support channels, response expectations, office hours, or community participation.
- Any exclusions, prerequisites, usage limits, or licensing terms.
For memberships, name the continuing benefit and delivery cadence. “Two new posts” is weak unless the customer understands why those posts matter. A monthly research briefing, a critique session, or access to a maintained resource library communicates value more clearly than an arbitrary quantity of content.
Separate access from service
Coaching, personal reviews, moderation, and rapid answers consume time that a downloadable file does not. If a higher tier includes personal help, price the labor and capacity explicitly. Do not promise unlimited support merely because the platform can technically display an “unlimited” benefit.
Step 2: Choose a sales structure that matches the promise
Use recurring billing for continuing value
Monthly or annual billing fits an offer that is refreshed, hosted, moderated, or serviced over time. Explain what happens in the next billing period so the renewal decision is informed. If the benefit ends after a fixed project, sell the project once instead of forcing a cancellation task on the customer.
Use a one-time price for a self-contained deliverable
A one-time purchase works when the buyer can receive the promised result without your ongoing labor. State whether future updates are included, sold separately, or not planned. If access depends on a third-party service, disclose that dependency and what happens if the service changes.

A collection can make sense when several products solve adjacent parts of the same problem. Show the contents and the reason to buy them together. A bundle that merely hides unrelated files creates confusion and makes refund requests more likely.

Use tiers only when each tier changes the outcome
A practical tier structure might separate self-serve material, group access, and limited individual feedback. Each tier should answer three questions: What extra result does the buyer receive? How often is it delivered? What additional work does it require from you?
Avoid tiers based only on arbitrary numbers of posts, channels, or downloads. If customers cannot explain the difference in one sentence, the tiers are probably adding choice without adding value. Keep the number of options small enough that a buyer can compare them quickly and you can operate them consistently.
Consider annual billing, trials, or pay-what-you-want carefully
Annual billing can reduce payment frequency and make planning easier when the value lasts a year. A trial can let a buyer experience the offer before a renewal, but it also creates cancellation and entitlement work. Pay-what-you-want can suit an audience with widely varying ability to pay, provided you set a clear minimum or explain what the payment supports. None of these structures is proven to convert better simply because a platform offers the feature; choose one you can explain and sustain.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Step 3: Establish a cost floor and a price hypothesis
Calculate the work required
Estimate the time for creation, editing, administration, moderation, customer service, revisions, and marketing that is directly tied to the offer. Include recurring maintenance rather than counting only the initial build. Add direct costs such as contractors, licenses, storage, event tools, and transaction-related charges.
A simple floor calculation is:
Required net per customer = (planned work hours × target hourly value + direct costs) ÷ expected paying customers
For a subscription, estimate the work and costs over a realistic period, then divide by the number of active customers you can actually serve. For a product, include the creation cost and the support you expect after launch. This floor protects you from knowingly selling an unsustainable offer.
Do not confuse a cost floor with willingness to pay
Your costs tell you what price may be necessary for the work to make sense; they do not prove that buyers will pay it. A product can be expensive to create but difficult to explain, or inexpensive to produce but highly useful. Treat the first number as a hypothesis that must be tested with real purchases and renewals.
Check the buyer’s perceived commitment
A recurring charge creates a continuing obligation, even when the amount is small. Make the billing interval, renewal behavior, cancellation path, and access after cancellation visible before payment. For a one-time product, make the deliverable and access duration equally clear. Confusion about commitment is a pricing problem because it creates hesitation, refunds, and avoidable support requests.

Write down assumptions
Record the audience, promise, package, price, billing cadence, expected number of customers, support limit, and cost assumptions. Also record which result would make you change the price. A written hypothesis prevents you from changing several variables at once and then guessing why performance moved.

Step 4: Calculate what you actually keep
Use the billing route and payout currency that apply to your account. Start with the customer payment, then subtract every charge that comes out of that payment or is paid by you to complete the transaction.
Net proceeds = customer payment − platform percentage fee − payment percentage fee − fixed payment fee − recurring-billing fee − conversion or payout charges − creator-borne taxes
Some services collect sales tax from the customer; that tax is not your revenue. Other taxes may be your responsibility. Keep the two concepts separate in your spreadsheet. Also distinguish a fee charged on each payment from a fee charged on a payout or currency conversion.
Illustrative calculation: a $10 recurring payment
These examples use the published US card rates described below and are arithmetic illustrations, not a prediction of conversion or earnings.
| Example route | Charges applied to a $10 payment | Illustrative net before other taxes or account-specific charges |
|---|---|---|
| Substack paid subscription | 10% platform fee ($1.00) + 2.9% card processing ($0.29) + $0.30 fixed processing charge + 0.7% recurring-billing fee ($0.07) | $8.34 |
| Patreon standard plan, USD card example | 10% platform fee ($1.00) + 2.9% processing ($0.29) + $0.30 fixed processing charge | $8.41 |
At a $5 payment, the same fixed $0.30 charge consumes a larger share of the sale. Under the Substack example, the arithmetic is $5 − $0.50 − $0.145 − $0.30 − $0.035 = $4.02 before other charges. That is why a very low subscription price can be more sensitive to payment mechanics than a higher one.
Recalculate with your actual buyer location, payment method, currency, tax treatment, payout method, and plan. Do not advertise an overall “fee percentage” unless you state which charges and assumptions it includes.
Current platform examples and what to verify
The following terms were published or checked on October 13, 2026. They are examples for specific plans and regions, not a universal ranking or a guarantee of total cost.
| Platform | Relevant formats and published facts | What to verify before pricing |
|---|---|---|
| Substack | Publishing is free regardless of subscriber count. When paid subscriptions are enabled, the platform charges 10% of subscription payments plus Stripe processing. | Patreon | Creators publishing a page after August 4, 2025 are on the standard 10% plan. Pages published by that date may retain legacy pricing while continuously published. The standard USD card and Apple Pay processing example is 2.9% + $0.30. Additional charges can depend on payment method, geography, payout currency, taxes, conversion, or payout method. | Whether your page is on standard or legacy pricing, the buyer’s payment route, currency, taxes, and withdrawal method. The fee overview was updated October 8, 2026. |
| Patreon one-time purchases | Digital products and collections can be sold for a creator-set price from $3 to $5,000 USD. Standard platform and processing fees apply to successfully processed sales. The guide was updated September 11, 2026. | The fees and taxes applicable to your buyer and account, and whether a collection’s support burden fits the price. |

| Shopify | Supports storefront sales and delivery of files such as PDFs, templates, audio, and courses, including product tiers and bundling. The Digital Products app is described as included without an extra app fee; the creator still pays for the Shopify plan and normal payment processing. | Your Shopify plan, payment processor, app configuration, file access controls, taxes, and any additional apps or services. |
| Kit | Commerce features cover ebooks, courses, paid newsletters, and memberships, with monthly or annual subscriptions, tiers, trials, and pay-what-you-want pricing. | Current processing and platform charges, payout timing, tax handling, and which features are available on your account. |
For membership-specific options, see Gumroad’s membership guidance, which describes memberships and optional additions such as coaching or community access. Feature availability is not evidence that one structure will convert better. Compare total fees, recurring and one-time sales support, digital delivery, access controls, tax handling, audience relationship, export capabilities, and the operational work you must perform.
Build a price ladder without creating confusion
Start with one clear default
Present the package that best represents the promise first. A default gives buyers a reference point and gives you a clean baseline for measuring sales. Add another option only when it serves a distinct need, such as self-serve access versus group feedback.

Make upgrades operationally real
Before adding a premium tier, estimate the hours required per customer. If ten premium members each expect a personal review, that workload may exceed what the subscription can support. Limit seats, define response times, or sell the service as a separate fixed-scope product when necessary.
Explain annual and one-time alternatives plainly
If you offer both monthly and annual billing, show the amount charged today and what access period it covers. If a one-time collection sits beside a membership, explain whether members receive it automatically, at a discount, or not at all. Customers should not have to infer which option is cheaper or which benefits overlap.
Validate with real purchases and renewals
Launch a controlled first version
- Invite the audience that matches the promise rather than trying to serve everyone.
- Offer a small number of clearly differentiated options.
- State the price, billing interval, deliverables, access period, support limits, and cancellation terms.
- Record the platform, payment route, currency, fees, refunds, and support time for each transaction.
- Ask buyers what outcome they expected and whether the package delivered it.
Track the metrics that connect price to sustainability
- Paid conversion: the share of qualified prospects who complete a purchase.
- Renewal or retention: whether recurring customers continue after the first period and why others cancel.
- Refunds: the stated reason and the point at which the buyer decided the offer was not a fit.
- Support burden: time spent answering questions, fixing access, moderating, or delivering custom help.
- Net revenue per customer: the amount left after the fees and costs you recorded, not the displayed price.
A high initial conversion rate can coexist with poor renewals if the continuing benefit is unclear. A lower conversion rate can still support the business if customers stay, need little support, and produce sufficient net revenue. Look at the complete pattern rather than optimizing one number.
Change one major variable at a time
When practical, change price, package, billing cadence, or included support separately. If you raise the price and remove a benefit simultaneously, you cannot tell which change affected purchases or cancellations. Keep a dated record of the offer shown to each group so the results remain interpretable.
Use customer questions as pricing evidence
Repeated questions about what is included indicate a packaging problem before they indicate a price problem. Requests for a missing outcome may suggest a new tier or product. Cancellations that cite time, not price, may mean the cadence or format is wrong. Treat comments as clues, then check them against purchase and renewal behavior.

Copying a competitor’s number
Another creator may have a different audience, reputation, cost structure, support model, or platform agreement. Use other offers to understand how customers describe value, not as proof that the same price fits your work.
Using platform fees as a willingness-to-pay signal
A platform’s percentage reflects its commercial terms, not what your audience considers valuable. Add fees to your calculation after defining the offer; do not set the customer price merely to mirror a fee percentage.

Ignoring fixed charges on low prices
A fixed processing amount takes a larger percentage of a small payment. Include it in a per-transaction model and check whether a slightly larger package, bundle, or billing interval reduces avoidable payment friction without hiding the price.
Creating too many tiers
Every tier adds copy, entitlement rules, support questions, and testing. Remove options that do not change the buyer’s outcome or your delivery method.
Promising indefinite updates accidentally
“Lifetime updates” can create an open-ended obligation. Define what updates mean, for how long they are planned, and whether major future products are included. If you cannot maintain the promise, sell the current version as a complete product.

A practical pricing worksheet
Complete this worksheet before publishing a price and revisit it whenever the offer changes:
- Audience: Who has the problem and what evidence do you have that they can act on a solution?
- Outcome: What can the buyer do, decide, or access after purchase?
- Format: Is the offer recurring access, a self-contained product, a collection, or a service-backed tier?
- Cadence: What arrives or remains available each billing period?
- Support: What is included, what is excluded, and how much time can you provide?
- Price hypothesis: What amount will you test, and why should the audience understand it?
- Net target: What must remain after platform, processing, currency, payout, and creator-borne tax costs?
- Capacity: How many customers can you serve at the promised quality?
- Evidence: Which purchases, renewals, refunds, and support observations will cause you to revise the offer?
When to raise, lower, or redesign the price
Raise or add a premium option when demand exceeds your capacity
If customers are buying consistently and the promised support is consuming more time than planned, a higher price, a limited premium tier, or a narrower service scope may protect quality. State the additional outcome rather than presenting the change as a surcharge.
Lower or simplify when hesitation is caused by unclear scope
Do not discount an offer that buyers do not understand. First remove unnecessary components, clarify the result, or provide a smaller self-serve version. A lower price is useful when it matches a genuinely smaller package, not when it conceals the same workload.
Redesign when renewals fail despite satisfied first purchases
If customers like the initial product but do not renew, inspect the continuing promise. You may have a strong one-time product that should not be sold as a subscription, or the recurring cadence may not add enough new value. Change the structure instead of repeatedly changing the number.
Bottom line
Price the result and the package first, then calculate the net amount left after every applicable charge. Use recurring billing only when the value continues, use one-time pricing for a defined deliverable, keep tiers meaningfully different, and treat the initial price as a hypothesis. Actual purchases, renewals, refunds, support load, and net revenue per customer are the evidence that should guide your next revision. Platform plans and fees change, so confirm the terms for your account before you publish the final price.
