The profitable price for a handmade product is neither “materials multiplied by two” nor whatever a competitor charges. Build a complete per-item cost, set a floor that pays for labor and selling expenses, then test whether your market and customer value can support a price above that floor. Recalculate when costs, volume, channel, or audience changes.
What a profitable price must accomplish
Every sale should contribute enough to cover the resources consumed by that item and leave a return for the business. That means counting more than clay, fabric, fragrance, lumber, or other materials. A realistic contribution can include:
- Materials used, including measured waste where you track it.
- Your complete labor time: sourcing, making, finishing, quality checks, photographing, listing, answering customer messages, packing, and shipping preparation.
- Packaging, labels, inserts, and any postage or delivery cost you absorb.
- A defensible share of overhead such as studio rent, utilities, equipment, insurance, software, advertising, booth fees, and travel.
- Marketplace, payment, advertising, currency-conversion, and other channel charges.
A formula gives you a starting point, not proof that buyers will accept the result. If customers will not pay a sustainable price, change the product, process, audience, positioning, or channel rather than quietly donating your labor.

Measure direct materials and waste
Record the quantity of each input consumed by one finished unit and its purchase cost. If a batch produces ten candles, for example, allocate the wax, fragrance, vessels, wicks, labels, and tracked spoilage across the sellable units. Use current replacement cost rather than an old invoice when prices have materially changed.

Pay for the complete workflow
Choose an hourly labor rate that reflects the pay you want the business to provide. Then log the time required for repeatable tasks. Making time alone is incomplete: production, finishing, quality control, photography, listing, sourcing, customer communication, packing, and shipping preparation all support the sale. Multiply total hours per unit by the chosen rate.
Etsy’s seller guidance emphasizes that enjoying the work is not a reason to leave it unpaid: “Just because you have fun with your business,” doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t pay yourself fairly. Read the full guidance at Etsy’s pricing handbook.
Allocate indirect overhead
Overhead does not attach neatly to one item, so document how you allocate it. Etsy suggests dividing relevant annual overhead by the number of items produced or planned for the year. Shopify likewise advises including materials, labor, and other expenses associated with creating a product in its pricing guidance.
An allocation is an estimate. If production volume doubles, rent per item may fall; if volume falls, it may rise. Revisit the denominator when your actual output differs substantially from your plan.
Use a cost-record table
| Cost category | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Materials | Quantity and current unit cost | Captures the physical inputs and reasonable waste |
| Labor | Hours for every sale-supporting task × chosen hourly rate | Prevents “profit” from being unpaid work |
| Packaging and fulfillment | Box, wrap, label, insert, postage or shipping subsidy | Shows the cost of getting an order ready and delivered |
| Allocated overhead | Annual support costs ÷ defensible production or sales base | Funds the studio and systems that make production possible |
| Channel charges | Listing, transaction, processing, advertising, currency, and payment costs | Connects the price to the actual selling channel |
Step 2: Calculate a cost floor
Start with:
Unit cost floor = direct materials + direct labor + allocated overhead + packaging and seller-paid fulfillment + applicable per-unit channel charges
This floor answers, “What must this sale contribute before it is economically rational?” It is not automatically the retail price. Taxes require separate treatment based on your jurisdiction and business situation; the sources cited here do not establish a universal tax reserve.
Percentage fees require algebra
If a channel takes a percentage of the selling price, adding a fixed dollar estimate can understate the required price. Let C be all costs other than the percentage fee, R your desired profit contribution, and f the fee rate expressed as a decimal:

Required price = (C + R) ÷ (1 − f)
Use the channel’s actual fee basis. Some fees apply to shipping or the entire order, not merely the displayed item price. If an order contains multiple units or a shipping charge, model the order total rather than applying a per-item shortcut.
Worked example with stated assumptions
Suppose one item uses $12 of materials, 1.5 hours of labor at $20 per hour ($30), $4 of allocated overhead, and $3 of packaging and seller-paid fulfillment. Non-percentage cost is therefore $49. If you want a $15 contribution and the applicable channel fee is 10% of the selling price, the required price is ($49 + $15) ÷ (1 − 0.10) = $71.11. This arithmetic is illustrative; replace every assumption with your own records and rates.
Step 3: Add marketplace and payment costs
Make a fee sheet for every channel and review it before publishing a price. Record fixed listing or order charges, percentage charges, payment processing, advertising, currency conversion, and any shipping-related assessment. Rates vary by country, account status, and date.
Etsy example: verify current applicability
Etsy’s help page, accessed October 13, 2026, lists a 6.5% transaction fee on the total order amount, including charged shipping and gift wrapping. Payment-processing rates vary by country. When conversion is required, Etsy describes a 2.5% currency-conversion fee.

The same page describes Offsite Ads fees of 15% for sellers below $10,000 in Etsy sales during the preceding 365 days, or 12% at or above that threshold, capped at $100 per order. Participation and eligibility rules apply, and these are Etsy-specific figures, not universal marketplace costs. Confirm your account’s current terms at Etsy’s fee and tax page before quoting a customer.
Do not copy a fee from an old blog post. Enter the rates that apply to your country, payment method, advertising status, and order total in your worksheet.
Step 4: Separate markup from margin
These terms describe different percentages:
- Markup compares the amount added with cost:
(price − cost) ÷ cost × 100. - Gross margin compares gross profit with revenue:
(revenue − cost of goods) ÷ revenue × 100.
If an item costs $24 and sells for $40, gross profit is $16 and gross margin is 40%. A 40% markup on $24 produces a $33.60 price, whose margin is about 28.6%. Define what you include in “cost of goods” before comparing products or channels.

Why “double the cost” is not a law
A multiplier can be a convenient first draft, but it ignores differences in labor, overhead, fees, demand, and channel. Shopify’s wholesale pricing guide gives an example in which doubling cost creates a 50% wholesale margin under that example’s assumptions; it also notes that targets differ by industry and market position. Treat the example as a calculation, not a universal handmade rule.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Broad industry figures are context, not maker targets
Shopify reproduces January 2026 NYU Stern School of Business data for broad wholesale categories: apparel 56.88%, soft beverages 54.74%, household products 51.04%, general electronics 26.76%, auto parts 15.84%, and food wholesalers 15.44%. These categories and business models are not directly comparable with an individual handmade studio, so do not adopt one as a required target.
Step 5: Check market fit and customer value
Compare genuinely similar offers
Build a comparison set using product type, dimensions, materials, finish, quality, customization, delivery time, shipping terms, buyer use, and occasion. A mass-produced item may provide context but is not automatically a direct competitor to a limited-run or personalized piece.
Identify evidence for a premium
Ask why a buyer would choose your item: distinctive design, craftsmanship, material quality, durability, personalization, provenance, or a meaningful gift occasion. Communicate those differences in photographs, specifications, care instructions, and product copy rather than relying on a bare claim of “handmade.”
One map-print seller quoted by Etsy says that for a thoughtful gift, prices from $20 to $135 can make sense even when material cost is much lower. That is the seller’s experience with a particular product and audience, not a general recommendation.

Combine top-down and bottom-up thinking
A top-down calculation starts with your complete costs and builds upward. A bottom-up approach starts with a market-tested target price and asks what production or business changes could make it sustainable. Use both:
- If the market price is comfortably above your floor, the difference can fund profit, risk, growth, or a stronger customer experience.
- If the market price is below your floor, examine simplification, batching, sourcing, minimum order quantities, audience, positioning, or another channel.
- If only unpaid labor closes the gap, the product is not yet profitable at that price.
Step 6: Price for retail and wholesale separately
Wholesale introduces another business’s margin and often changes order size, packaging, payment timing, and fulfillment. A wholesale price must still pay for labor, production, overhead, and selling costs while leaving the retailer enough room to price the item for its customers.

Calculate break-even
Shopify defines break-even as the point where revenue equals expenses and gives:
Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ (unit price − variable cost per unit)
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use realistic quantities and the variable cost for that channel. A large order is not automatically profitable if discounts, special packaging, freight, payment delays, or extra labor reduce the contribution per unit.
Model a wholesale decision
| Question | Direct retail | Wholesale |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets the final customer price? | You | Retail buyer, within the relationship and market |
| Order pattern | Small, frequent orders | Potentially larger batches, with different production planning |
| Costs to model | Consumer packaging, individual shipping, marketplace and payment fees | Case packaging, freight, terms, samples, buyer communication, and any wholesale platform fees |
| Decision test | Does each order cover its full variable and allocated cost? | Does per-unit contribution and realistic volume cover fixed costs? |
Step 7: Test, measure, and revise
Launch prices are hypotheses. Keep a record for each product and channel containing:
- Units sold, inquiries, conversion rate where available, and time to sale.
- Displayed price, discounts, returns, refunds, and shipping charged versus shipping paid.
- Actual marketplace, processing, advertising, and currency fees.
- Contribution after variable costs and the labor hours actually required.
Change one meaningful factor at a time where possible: price, photography, description, bundle, customization, or shipping policy. Etsy suggests trying different prices for similar items and seeking feedback. Shopify advises monitoring costs, competitors, and the market and adjusting as needed.
Recalculate after a trigger
- A material, packaging, postage, rent, utility, or software cost changes.
- You add or remove a marketplace, payment method, or advertising program.
- Production volume changes enough to alter overhead per item.
- The product becomes customized, faster to make, or more labor-intensive.
- Your intended customer, geography, or sales channel changes.
- Wholesale terms, minimum quantities, or retailer requirements change.
A practical pricing worksheet
- Describe the finished unit and the sales channel, currency, and geography.
- Enter material quantities, current unit costs, and tracked waste.
- Log every production, finishing, quality, sourcing, photography, listing, communication, packing, and shipping-preparation minute.
- Multiply labor hours by the chosen hourly rate.
- Allocate overhead and document the production or sales basis.
- Add packaging and any seller-paid fulfillment.
- Enter fixed and percentage channel fees using the fee basis that actually applies.
- Set a desired contribution after paying labor and costs.
- Calculate the required price, then compare it with genuinely similar offers and the value your product demonstrates.
- Record the test result and schedule a review after enough comparable sales or inquiries have accumulated.
A spreadsheet, ledger, or neutral accounting tool is sufficient; no paid platform is required. Etsy links a price worksheet and mentions QuickBooks for tracking shop income and expenses. Shopify links pricing and profit-margin calculators. Use any workflow that preserves the assumptions behind each number.

“I used an old fee percentage”
Symptom: the payout is lower than the worksheet predicts. Fix: check the channel’s current, country-specific help page and model whether fees apply to shipping, gift wrapping, advertising-attributed orders, or conversion.
“My margin and markup reports disagree”
Symptom: two documents show different percentages for the same product. Fix: label each calculation and define cost of goods consistently.
“Competitors are cheaper”
Symptom: matching their price would remove your pay or contribution. Fix: compare the offers on materials, quality, customization, delivery, and audience; then change the offer or channel instead of copying an unsustainable price.
“Wholesale volume will solve everything”
Symptom: a large order creates cash strain or little contribution. Fix: model batch labor, packaging, freight, payment terms, realistic quantity, and break-even before accepting the discount.
Final decision checklist
- Does the price pay the chosen labor rate for the complete workflow?
- Are materials, waste, packaging, fulfillment, and allocated overhead included?
- Are percentage fees calculated against the correct order base?
- Is the desired contribution separate from owner labor?
- Does the offer give buyers a clear reason to pay this price?
- Have you compared genuinely similar products rather than only mass-market substitutes?
- For wholesale, does the buyer have room to retail while your economics remain sustainable?
- Is there a date and trigger for the next review?
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you price handmade goods?
Calculate a complete per-item cost, add the channel fees that apply to the order, set a desired contribution, and then test the resulting price against comparable offers and the value buyers can see. No single multiplier works for every product.
What hourly wage should a maker use?
The available sources do not establish a universal maker wage. Choose a rate the business can defend, apply it to the complete workflow, and revise it as skills, complexity, and business needs change.
Should taxes be included in the product price?
Treat taxes separately according to your jurisdiction, registration status, and business structure. The cited pricing guidance does not establish one tax percentage that applies everywhere.
