Price the service you promote on LinkedIn around a clearly defined client outcome, not an unexplained hourly number. Specify the deliverables, assumptions, deadline, client responsibilities, revision limit, exclusions and payment schedule first; then choose hourly, fixed-project or retainer pricing according to how certain the scope is. LinkedIn can generate the lead, but you and the client still need to negotiate and document the commercial terms.
What “pricing through LinkedIn” actually involves
LinkedIn is a discovery and conversation channel, not a universal rate card. A potential client may find you in LinkedIn’s Services Marketplace, through LinkedIn search or through a recommendation from someone in their network. The buyer can review your profile, Service Page and reviews, then request a proposal. A request may be matched to several providers, so your price must be understandable beside competing proposals without becoming a race to the bottom.
LinkedIn Help explains that clients and providers can message each other on LinkedIn.com and then “finalize the terms of any agreement outside of LinkedIn.” Treat the LinkedIn conversation as the start of a sales process. Put the final scope, fee, dates, ownership, confidentiality, cancellation terms and payment instructions in a proposal or contract that both parties can retain.
Start with the outcome and scope before naming a fee
A price is defensible when a buyer can tell exactly what completion looks like. Replace a vague offer such as “LinkedIn content support” with an outcome and a boundary: for example, “a four-week executive-posting system consisting of eight edited posts, a content calendar and one performance review.” The example is a packaging illustration, not a market benchmark.

Define the client-facing outcome
- State the business or communication result your work is intended to support, such as a publish-ready campaign, an audited process or a finished design system.
- Describe the completion evidence: files delivered, pages implemented, sessions held, data reviewed or approvals obtained.
- Separate an outcome you control from a result that depends on the client, audience or platform. You can promise delivery of tested copy; you cannot promise a particular number of leads from an organic post.
List the deliverables and assumptions
- Name each file, meeting, analysis, implementation task or support window included.
- Record the format, quantity and deadline for every deliverable.
- State what the client must provide, such as brand assets, account access, data, subject-matter interviews or consolidated feedback.
- Identify assumptions that affect effort: one decision-maker, one language, an existing brand guide, a working website or access to required software.
Set revisions, exclusions and handoffs
Specify the number of revision rounds and what counts as a round. A round might mean one consolidated set of comments returned within a stated number of business days. Exclude work that would change the quote, such as new deliverables, extra stakeholders, a new strategy, translation, rush work or implementation in an unlisted system. Explain how additional work will be approved and priced.
Put the schedule and payment milestones in writing
Show the start date, client review dates, final delivery date and any dependency that pauses the schedule. For a larger project, tie payments to milestones rather than promising that the entire fee is due only at the end. A simple structure could be an initial payment to reserve the start date, a second payment at an agreed review milestone and the balance at acceptance. State the currency, invoice due date, late-payment treatment and whether transaction fees or taxes are added.
Calculate a sustainable floor rate
Do not copy an hourly figure from another freelancer. Build a private minimum rate from the income your business needs and the time you can realistically sell.
Recommended Free Tools
Illustrative floor-rate formula: (target personal pay + business overhead + tax reserve + contingency) ÷ realistic annual billable hours.
“Billable hours” are not all the hours you work. Prospecting, LinkedIn messages, proposals, administration, learning, sick days and holidays reduce the hours available for client delivery.
Worked example (illustrative only)
Suppose a freelancer sets an annual target of $60,000 for personal pay, estimates $15,000 of operating overhead, reserves $15,000 for taxes and keeps a $10,000 contingency. If the freelancer expects 1,000 genuinely billable hours, the floor is $100 per billable hour: ($60,000 + $15,000 + $15,000 + $10,000) ÷ 1,000. This is a planning calculation, not a claim that LinkedIn buyers pay that rate.

Review the assumptions whenever your utilization, costs or tax situation changes. A low utilization estimate raises the required rate but may better reflect reality; an optimistic utilization estimate produces a price that looks competitive while leaving no time to run the business.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConvert the floor into a project fee
Estimate the hours for discovery, production, meetings, revisions, administration and handoff. Multiply that total by your floor or target rate. Add a clearly explained contingency for uncertainty rather than hiding it in an arbitrary “premium.” If the client wants a faster start, more access or additional decision-makers, estimate those requirements separately and change the scope or fee.
Choose the pricing structure that matches uncertainty
| Structure | Best fit | What to define | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hourly or daily | Discovery, advisory work and assignments whose scope will change | Rate, estimated hours, spending cap, time-reporting method, response window and approval for additional hours | The buyer may focus on time rather than value, while the final cost remains uncertain |
| Fixed project | Bounded deliverables that can be verified at completion | Deliverables, assumptions, milestones, revision limit, acceptance test, exclusions and change-order process | You absorb the cost of unclear requirements or uncontrolled revisions |
| Monthly retainer | Recurring work where the client needs predictable access and continuity | Monthly hours or deliverable allowance, included channels, meeting and response limits, rollover policy, priority rules and cancellation notice | Unused capacity, “unlimited” requests or an unclear definition of availability |
Use hourly pricing for discovery and evolving work
Hourly pricing is useful when the client cannot yet describe the problem, when research may reveal several solutions or when you are acting as an on-call specialist. Give the buyer a forecast and a cap: “up to 12 hours for the audit; I will request approval before exceeding that limit.” Record time in a way the client can understand, and distinguish billable delivery from complimentary sales conversations.
Use fixed pricing when completion is testable
A fixed fee rewards efficiency when the deliverables and approval path are stable. It also lets the client budget with confidence. The protection is the scope document: if the client adds a channel, stakeholder or revision round, issue a written change order before doing the extra work.
Use a retainer for continuity, not vague availability
A retainer should purchase a stated monthly capacity or set of outputs. Define whether unused hours expire or roll over, how quickly you respond, which meetings are included and how urgent requests are prioritized. If the client wants unlimited access, convert that request into a maximum response time, an included capacity and a fee for work beyond it.

Build packages that make the comparison easy
Packages help a LinkedIn visitor understand the difference between offers quickly. Present one recommended package first. Add a smaller option when a lower-commitment entry point is useful and an expanded option when speed, access or strategic depth creates real additional work. Do not create tiers that contain the same work with different labels and arbitrary prices.

| Package example | Scope change | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic | One defined review, a written findings document and a short handoff call; limited or no implementation | The buyer needs evidence and a plan before approving a larger project |
| Recommended implementation | The diagnostic plus the agreed implementation, a stated number of revision rounds and standard response times | The problem and deliverables are sufficiently clear to price as a project |
| Priority or expanded | More deliverables, additional stakeholder sessions, faster turnaround or continuing measurement, each listed explicitly | The client values speed, access or broader coverage and the extra effort is measurable |
Show the price beside the included scope, timeline and client responsibilities. If you do not publish a number publicly, give a clear starting point only when it reflects a defined minimum scope; otherwise invite the buyer to request a proposal after the discovery details are known.
Adjust a quote for the variables that change your work
There is no universal LinkedIn freelance rate. Upwork’s official pricing guidance notes that complex jobs may justify higher rates, while simpler jobs may support a lower bid; it also identifies long-term stability and urgency as factors that can change a quote. Apply those principles to the actual engagement rather than adding unexplained surcharges.
| Variable | Questions to ask | Pricing response |
|---|---|---|
| Complexity | How many systems, audiences, languages, dependencies or approval layers are involved? | Increase estimated effort or narrow the deliverables; explain the reason in the proposal. |
| Scope certainty | Can completion be tested now, or will discovery change the solution? | Use hourly discovery, a paid diagnostic or a fixed fee with explicit assumptions. |
| Urgency | Does the deadline require evenings, weekend work, reprioritization or parallel production? | Offer a standard timeline and a separately scoped expedited option. |
| Continuity | Will the client provide predictable monthly work or only a one-off assignment? | Consider a retainer with a defined monthly scope; do not discount merely for a promise of future work. |
| Access and revisions | How many meetings, channels, stakeholders and feedback rounds are included? | Price the additional communication load or cap access and revisions. |
| Buyer risk | How easily can the client verify that the work is complete and usable? | Use milestones, acceptance criteria, demonstrations or a small paid discovery step. |
Long-term work can improve planning, but it still consumes capacity. Offer a modest structural benefit only when the commitment genuinely reduces selling or setup time, and document the minimum term and cancellation notice.
Use proof to justify the fee
A LinkedIn buyer is comparing perceived risk as well as price. Put the evidence closest to the claim it supports:
- Show a relevant portfolio example with the starting problem, your contribution, deliverables and a measurable result when the client has authorized that disclosure.
- Use testimonials that describe the work and working process, not only personal praise.
- Explain your method in a few steps so the client can see why the quoted effort is necessary.
- State what you will not claim. A communication service can improve clarity and consistency without guaranteeing audience behavior that you do not control.
Keep your LinkedIn profile and Service Page aligned with the proposal. A mismatch between a broad profile promise and a narrowly scoped quote creates doubt; a focused offer makes the fee easier to evaluate.
Follow the LinkedIn request-to-proposal workflow
LinkedIn’s documented buyer flow is straightforward, although labels and matching availability can change:

- The buyer selects a service in the Services Marketplace or reaches a provider through search or a recommendation.
- The buyer chooses Request proposal, enters project information and submits the request.
- LinkedIn may send that request to multiple providers. Read the information carefully instead of replying with a generic price.
- Review the buyer’s requested outcome, deadline, budget signal, decision process and missing information. Ask focused questions before committing to a fixed fee.
- Send a proposal that separates the recommended package, optional additions, assumptions, timeline, revision limit and payment milestones.
- Discuss questions through LinkedIn messages or an agreed call. Record any change to scope in the written proposal or contract.
- Finalize the agreement outside LinkedIn, as LinkedIn’s help guidance instructs, and use the agreed invoice and payment process.
Before contact, buyers are advised to review a provider’s profile, Service Page and reviews. Make those pages useful: identify the service, ideal client, typical deliverables, location or working hours when relevant, and a credible way to begin.
Write a proposal that makes the rate credible
A proposal should let a buyer answer four questions quickly: What will I receive? When will I receive it? What do you need from me? What happens if the scope changes?
Recommended proposal order
- Situation and objective: Restate the buyer’s problem in their language and distinguish the desired outcome from metrics you cannot guarantee.
- Recommended scope: List deliverables, formats, quantities, meetings, access and revision rounds.
- Method and milestones: Show discovery, production, review and handoff dates, including client approval points.
- Investment: Give the fee, currency, taxes or expenses, payment milestones and validity period of the quote.
- Assumptions and exclusions: Identify required inputs, decision-makers, systems, turnaround times and work not included.
- Changes and acceptance: Explain how extra work is approved, billed and scheduled, and what constitutes acceptance.
- Relevant proof: Add only examples and testimonials that match this scope.
Example fee language
“The recommended project fee is $X for the deliverables listed above, delivered over Y weeks. It includes two consolidated revision rounds and the client inputs listed in the assumptions. Work outside that scope requires written approval and is billed at $Z per hour or quoted as a separate fixed change. Payment is scheduled as A at kickoff, B at the review milestone and C at final acceptance.” Replace the variables with actual terms; do not leave them unresolved in a client-facing proposal.
If the buyer asks only, “What is your hourly rate?”, answer directly, then explain when that rate applies and offer the smallest useful next step. For example, quote a capped discovery block rather than pretending you can price an undefined implementation accurately.

Promoting your service organically through your profile and network is different from buying LinkedIn ads. LinkedIn says its ads are sold through an auction in which an advertiser’s bid competes with other advertisers. Any advertising budget therefore belongs in a separate line from your labor, strategy, production and management fee.

Common pricing mistakes and practical fixes
Publishing one unexplained number
Problem: A visitor cannot tell whether the number includes strategy, implementation, revisions or support.
Fix: Attach every price to a named package, scope, timeline and exclusion.
Underquoting to win a crowded request
Problem: A low fee leaves no room for administration, feedback or unexpected complexity.
Fix: Calculate your floor, reduce scope instead of silently reducing the rate, and offer a smaller diagnostic when appropriate.
Using a fixed fee for an undefined problem
Problem: You carry discovery risk and may disagree about what “done” means.
Fix: Sell a paid discovery phase, use hourly pricing with a cap, or write detailed assumptions and a change process.
Calling a retainer “unlimited”
Problem: The client expects unlimited tasks and immediate replies.
Fix: Define monthly capacity, deliverables, channels, response time, rollover and overage pricing.
Offering packages that differ only by price
Problem: Buyers cannot see a rational reason to choose one tier.
Fix: Change a real variable such as scope, speed, access, revision limit or measurement depth.
Forgetting the commercial handoff
Problem: A LinkedIn message records interest but not a complete agreement.
Fix: Send a written proposal or contract that covers payment, ownership, confidentiality, cancellation and scope changes before work begins.
Guaranteeing a result controlled by other factors
Problem: Promising a specific number of leads, followers or sales can create an obligation you cannot control.
Fix: Guarantee the quality and quantity of your deliverables, define any measurement you will report and describe external outcomes as goals rather than promises.
A pre-send pricing checklist
- Is the client outcome stated in one sentence?
- Can the buyer count every included deliverable?
- Are assumptions, required inputs and client deadlines visible?
- Are revision rounds, meetings, response times and exclusions capped?
- Does the structure match uncertainty: hourly for evolving work, fixed for bounded work or retainer for recurring capacity?
- Did you calculate the fee from realistic billable capacity rather than a copied market number?
- Are urgency, complexity, access and continuity reflected in scope or price?
- Are milestones, currency, taxes, expenses and payment dates explicit?
- Does the proposal include a written change-order process?
- Are advertising spend and service fees separate?
- Does your profile, Service Page and proof support the offer you are quoting?
- Will the final agreement be documented outside LinkedIn before delivery starts?
How to refine your prices over time
After each engagement, compare the estimate with actual delivery time, revision volume, meeting load and payment friction. Record which assumptions held and which failed. If a service repeatedly takes longer, either raise the fee or narrow the deliverables. If clients consistently decline at the same point, check whether the outcome, proof, scope or payment terms are unclear before cutting the price.
Keep a short library of anonymized proposals, objections and approved change orders. It will help you answer future LinkedIn requests consistently while preserving room to customize the scope. Recheck LinkedIn’s current marketplace labels, matching behavior and advertising rules whenever you publish step-by-step instructions, because those product details can change.
