Price your indie game for the value of the experience, not to be the cheapest comparable title. Set the base price from scope, expected playtime, replayability, multiplayer or retention, release state, and evidence from genuinely similar games. Then design regional prices and a gradual discount path around that base price. Steam’s own guidance treats pricing as a product decision and warns that rushing into deep discounts can weaken the perceived value that supports later revenue.
There is no universal “correct” Steam price in the available platform guidance. The practical goal is a price customers can understand and accept, with enough room for launch and seasonal promotions without training your audience to wait for a sale.
Start with the value your game delivers
A competitor’s price is useful context, but it is not a pricing formula. Steam advises developers to consider the length of a playthrough, replayability, multiplayer, Early Access status, the prices of similar games, and the timing of future promotions. Those factors describe what a customer is buying more accurately than a race to the lowest visible number. See Steamworks Pricing for the platform’s current guidance.

Estimate what a typical buyer can reasonably experience at launch, not an optimistic completion time that assumes every optional activity. A short, tightly authored game can justify a price when its production quality and identity are clear; a larger campaign needs a price that reflects the amount of content you are asking customers to enter. State the approximate campaign length and what is included so the price has context on the store page.

Replayability, multiplayer, and retention
Replayable systems, procedural variation, challenge modes, cooperative play, and a healthy community can extend the useful life of a purchase. They also affect how you should think about later promotions. A game that can retain players, support an active multiplayer audience, or add meaningful downloadable content may benefit from preserving a credible base price while growing its audience over time.
Release state and Early Access
Early Access is a different promise from a finished release. Explain what is playable now, what remains planned, and how the price relates to the current state. Decide in advance how you will handle the transition to full release; a price change can trigger Steam’s 30-day price-increase discount cooldown, so do not treat the launch price as an informal placeholder.
Use a value brief before choosing a number
Write a one-page brief that answers these questions:

- What is the core experience and who is most likely to value it?
- How much content is available at the planned release date?
- What makes a second playthrough, ongoing session, or multiplayer session worthwhile?
- What updates or downloadable content are credible, rather than merely possible?
- Is the game in Early Access, and what customer expectation does that create?
This brief gives you a defensible reason for the price and helps you explain it consistently in the store description, announcements, and customer support.
Choose comparable games carefully
Build a comparison set from games that resemble yours in genre, scope, production value, content, and release state. Do not select only the cheapest titles or compare a small Early Access project with a finished game that has years of updates. Steam’s guidance explicitly recommends researching comparable games and customer feedback while focusing on customer value instead of simply undercutting the market.

Read reviews for price signals, not just sentiment
Look for repeated comments such as “too short,” “great replay value,” “worth it with friends,” or “unfinished at this price.” Separate complaints about bugs or missing quality from a genuine disagreement about value. Reviews are evidence about customer expectations, not a vote that mechanically determines your price.
Do not anchor on the lowest price
Matching the cheapest adjacent game can make your own price look like an admission that the game is worth less. It can also leave too little room for a launch discount, regional adjustments, platform fees, support, and future content. Use the comparison set to understand the market’s value bands and customer language, then position your game where its actual promise belongs.

Set the base price before planning promotions
Choose the intended base price first, then map discounts around it. Steam does not allow base-price changes during an active or scheduled discount, and a price increase generally creates a 30-day wait before another discount. A launch price that you expect to change immediately can therefore constrain your calendar.
Document the reason for the base price
Record the assumptions behind the number: content available at release, expected playtime, replayability, multiplayer or retention features, the state of Early Access, and the comparable games you reviewed. Include the date of the decision and the regions you checked. This record makes later changes deliberate rather than reactions to a single day of sales.
Separate price changes from discounting
A discount temporarily lowers the price while preserving the anchor customers see outside the event. A base-price change resets that anchor and can affect every region. If your launch build is incomplete, fix the product promise or make the Early Access status explicit instead of relying on a low permanent price to compensate for uncertainty.
Account for the full commercial plan
Ask how the base game will relate to future downloadable content, bundles, soundtrack sales, or a multiplayer community. The objective is not to maximize the first week’s unit count at any cost. Steam cautions against early discounts aimed merely at climbing the Top Sellers list; a short-lived ranking spike is not the same as durable revenue.

Review regional prices instead of blindly converting currency
Steam supports pricing in 37 currencies. Its conversion tools can use exchange rates, purchasing power, or a multi-variable method that considers local purchasing power, comparable entertainment costs, and exchange rates. These methods are aids: you retain control over the price entered for each currency and region. The platform’s regional-pricing guidance is in Steamworks Pricing.
Use a three-pass regional review
- Generate a starting point. Review Steam’s available conversion method for each supported currency rather than converting the reference currency at a bank rate alone.
- Check local context. Compare the resulting price with entertainment products and genuinely similar games available to customers in that region. Look for prices that create an obvious mismatch with local purchasing power or the game’s competitive set.
- Enter and document the final values. Adjust where your market knowledge supports it, record the reason, and check how discounts will interact with Steam’s currency-specific minimum transaction thresholds.
Regional pricing is not a promise that every country will produce the same margin or conversion rate. It is a way to make the purchase legible and attainable in each market while keeping the overall positioning coherent.
Recheck after major currency movement
Exchange rates and local conditions change. Revisit regional prices when the game’s base price changes, when a major currency moves, or when customer feedback shows that a region is materially misaligned. Avoid making frequent small changes without a documented reason; every base-price increase can affect the discount calendar.

Decide whether to use a launch discount
A launch discount is optional. Steam generally suggests around 10%–15% when a developer chooses to use one. It can run for 7–14 days, cannot exceed 40%, and must be configured before release. Confirm the current settings in Steamworks Discounting before publishing.

When a modest launch discount fits
A small, time-limited discount can reward early adopters, give wishlisted customers a reason to buy now, and provide a clear end date for launch messaging. It works best when the base price already represents the game’s value and the discount is described as an opening event rather than a permanent correction.
When skipping it can be healthier
Skip a launch discount if the release date is uncertain, the product promise may change, or you need launch data at the intended base price. You cannot add a discount retroactively once the game is live, so make the decision with the launch calendar, review timing, and support capacity in mind.
Map a gradual discount path
Discount timing is part of the product strategy. Steam generally blocks a product from being discounted for 30 days after release, within 30 days of another discount, or for 30 days after a price increase. Seasonal sale discounts have an exception to the ordinary discount-to-discount cooldown, but the release and price-increase cooldowns still matter. Discounts also cannot take a currency price below Steam’s minimum thresholds. Check the current rules in Steamworks Discounting before scheduling an event.
Use the official progression as an example, not a script
Steam illustrates a gradual path of 33% → 50% → 66% → 75% and deeper discounts over a year or more. Those percentages are an example, not a required schedule or a claim that every game should follow it. The principle is to stair-step discounts as a title matures instead of jumping to the deepest cut soon after launch.
Match discount depth to the game’s sales curve
Use Steamworks Sales & Activation reporting to watch units and revenue over time. Observe the normal decay after launch, the response to each promotion, refund or review signals, and whether new content changes demand. A discount should answer a business question: reach a new audience, support a major update, help a mature title with substantial downloadable content, or participate in a seasonal event. “More units” alone is not a sufficient objective.
Protect the full-price customer’s trust
A steep discount shortly after release can signal to full-price customers that waiting was the rational choice. It can also make later promotions harder because customers expect the earlier low price to return. A measured progression gives buyers a reason to purchase at different stages without making the base price appear artificial.

Allow for a different mature-title strategy
A game with strong retention, a large audience opportunity, and a substantial downloadable-content catalogue may eventually have a reason to discount the base game more deeply. Lowering the entry price can bring new players into the ecosystem, where expansions and multiplayer activity matter. That is a later strategic choice, not a justification for underpricing the launch product.
Build a launch-to-year-one calendar
Put every price event on one calendar before release. Include the intended base price, regional review dates, the optional launch discount, platform cooldowns, seasonal opportunities, major updates, downloadable-content releases, and any planned base-price change.
- Before release: finalize the base price, regional entries, and launch-discount settings; verify that the planned discount respects Steam’s minimum transaction thresholds.
- Launch window: communicate the base price and, if used, the 10%–15% launch offer and its 7–14-day end date.
- First 30 days: treat the post-launch period as a learning window. Do not assume another ordinary discount can be scheduled immediately.
- After the initial window: review sales decay, customer feedback, and product updates before selecting the next promotion.
- Before any price increase: check the resulting 30-day discount cooldown and avoid scheduling a sale that the price change would invalidate.
- Over the following year or more: consider a gradual progression, such as Steam’s illustrative 33%, 50%, 66%, and 75% steps, only when the game’s maturity and goals support each step.
Measure revenue, not just visibility
Sales-rank movement can be exciting but is a weak standalone pricing signal. Steam specifically cautions against early discounts used merely to climb the Top Sellers list. Track the outcomes that matter to your plan:
- Units and gross revenue during the base-price period
- Units and revenue during each discount event
- How quickly sales return to their normal level after a promotion
- Review themes about value, length, bugs, and missing content
- Whether updates, multiplayer activity, or downloadable content improve retention
- Regional differences that suggest a price needs review
Compare events over similar periods and label unusual factors such as a major update or a featured placement. Avoid declaring a discount successful because it produced a short spike if the resulting revenue, reviews, or post-sale demand do not support the next decision.
Common pricing mistakes and their fixes
Undercutting every comparable
Problem: The game is priced below the cheapest related title without a value-based reason.
Fix: Rebuild the comparison set around scope, content, release state, and customer feedback. Set the price your game can defend, then use temporary promotions for specific goals.

Using a permanent low price as a launch strategy

Fix: Clarify the product promise, choose an intentional base price, and use an optional launch discount if an opening incentive is needed. A permanent cut is harder to reverse and can reset customer expectations.
Ignoring regional purchasing power
Problem: Every currency is set by a simple exchange-rate conversion.
Fix: Review Steam’s exchange-rate, purchasing-power, and multi-variable options, then check local entertainment prices and comparable games before entering regional values.

- Have you written down the game’s content scope, expected playtime, replayability, multiplayer or retention features, and Early Access status?
- Did you compare genuinely similar games rather than simply the lowest-priced games in the genre?
- Can the store page explain why the base price is reasonable for the intended audience?
- Is the base price finalized before you schedule a launch discount or other promotion?
- Have you reviewed all 37 supported currencies with Steam’s conversion aids and local market context?
- If you are using a launch discount, is it configured before release, limited to no more than 40%, and scheduled for 7–14 days?
- Does your calendar account for the ordinary 30-day release, discount, and price-increase cooldowns?
- Will every discounted currency price remain above Steam’s current minimum transaction threshold?
- What sales, revenue, review, and retention signals will determine your next promotion?
The decision in one sentence
Set a base price that reflects the game customers can play now, use comparable titles and feedback to validate the positioning, review each region deliberately, and make discounts progressively deeper only when the sales curve, content plan, and customer expectations justify them.
