Google Ads now calls automatically created text assets text customization. In a Search campaign, you can preview representative AI-generated headlines and descriptions before enabling the feature or launching the campaign: open the campaign’s Asset optimization section, provide the final landing page URL, and select Preview examples. Google generally returns up to 10 examples in under 30 seconds. The preview is a sample for review—not a promise of the exact ad combination that will serve.

What “automatically created assets” means now

For Search campaigns, the current Google Ads name is text customization. “Automatically created assets” is the older label that still appears in some explanations, screenshots, or account interfaces. Text customization is a campaign-level capability within AI Max for Search campaigns. To use the feature in live delivery, the campaign must opt in to AI Max.

Previewing is separate from enabling delivery. You can ask Google Ads to generate sample headlines and descriptions while setting up a campaign without opting into text customization. That separation lets you inspect likely wording, identify obvious brand or policy problems, and improve the landing page before generated copy can appear in an ad.

What you need before opening the preview

The preview is based on the campaign’s destination and advertising context. Have these items ready:

  • A Search campaign in creation or an existing Search campaign that you can edit.
  • A final landing page URL at the ad level. Google uses this URL as the primary page for generation.
  • Accurate landing-page content, including a clear title, descriptive copy, and relevant metadata.
  • Existing ads and ad-group keywords, if they are already configured; Google says these can be among the inputs for customized text.
  • Any exclusions or themes you want to apply as text guidelines. The guidelines feature is described by Google as a pilot, so its availability can vary by account.

A keyword-level final URL can be used, but Google notes that asset generation may be limited in that setup. Pages with very little readable content should also be expected to produce fewer examples.

Preview examples while creating a Search campaign

Use this route when you are building a new campaign and want to review generated wording before launch.

  1. Start a new Search campaign in Google Ads and proceed through the normal campaign setup until the asset settings are displayed.
  2. Open the Asset optimization section.
  3. Check the final landing page URL. If no URL is present, enter the page you want the ad to send visitors to.
  4. Select Preview examples.
  5. Wait for the sample panel to load. Google says examples are generated mostly in less than 30 seconds, although the actual time can vary.
  6. Read the headline and description examples in the context of the landing page. Check product names, claims, prices, locations, spelling, legal wording, and calls to action before continuing with campaign setup.

The panel can show up to 10 representative headline and description assets. It is not a list of every asset Google could create, and it is not a selection tool for forcing one particular combination into the campaign.

Preview an existing campaign

For a campaign that has already been created, open the campaign in Google Ads, choose the option to edit it, and open its generated-asset preview from the campaign’s asset settings. The exact placement of the control can change as Google moves accounts from the legacy automatically-created-assets terminology to the AI Max interface, so look for wording such as text customization, generated asset preview, or the Asset optimization area rather than relying on an old screenshot.

If the campaign does not already contain a final landing page URL, enter one when the preview asks for it and then choose Preview examples. Entering a URL for this inspection does not by itself turn on text customization.

What the sample contains

The generated panel is intended to answer a practical question: “What sort of copy might Google derive from this destination and campaign?” It can show examples of:

  • Search headlines based on the page and advertising context.
  • Search descriptions that expand or rephrase information found on the destination.
  • Wording influenced by existing ads, ad-group keywords, the domain, and the final landing page.

Google says text customization is available in all languages supported by the feature. Its documentation gives English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German, Japanese, and Dutch as examples. Availability is not limited to those eight languages; they are examples of the supported set.

Google also says examples are available for almost all standard business categories, with adult content identified as an exception. That statement does not override policy review: an example appearing in the panel is not evidence that the final ad is approved or eligible to serve.

Apply text guidelines without hiding every result

Where the account exposes text guidelines, you can tell Google Ads to exclude particular terms or avoid themes. This is useful for protecting regulated wording, internal terminology, or a brand voice that should not be paraphrased.

When a guideline is too restrictive

If the exclusions and avoided themes eliminate every possible asset, Google Ads prompts you to adjust or remove the restrictions. Broaden the allowed language, remove only the rule that is blocking all candidates, and run the preview again. Do not interpret an empty panel as proof that the landing page has no usable content; it may simply mean the filters leave no permitted wording.

What guidelines do not do

Guidelines are constraints on generation, not a guarantee that every future ad will obey a preferred sentence structure. Continue to review the resulting examples and the landing page itself. Because Google describes this capability as a pilot, the control may not be present or may behave differently in every account.

How Google says the text is generated

Google describes a combination of extractive and generative methods. Extractive techniques can take snippets from landing-page titles, descriptions, and meta tags. Generative AI can then create or adapt wording grounded in the landing-page content. The domain, final landing page, existing ads, and ad-group keywords may also inform the output.

These are product descriptions from Google, not an independent accuracy or performance study. Treat the page as the source of truth: correct outdated claims, remove accidental text, and make sure important qualifiers are visible before asking Google to generate examples.

Refresh behavior

Google says customized text assets are refreshed as needed at least every 48 hours. A preview captured today therefore describes a point in time, not a permanent library of copy. Changes to the destination, ads, keywords, or other campaign inputs can lead to different generated wording later.

When generated text can serve

Google says customized text assets serve only when its systems predict that they will perform better than the advertiser-provided headlines and descriptions. This is a serving rule described by the product documentation, not a promise of higher conversion rate, lower cost, or better relevance. Keep your own well-tested assets in the campaign and evaluate actual results after launch.

How to interpret the preview correctly

The preview has three important limits. First, it does not show every possible asset combination. Second, it does not let you filter the interface to one specific combination. Third, Google explicitly warns that previews do not guarantee the final ad appearance.

Consequently, use the panel as a representative inspection, not as an approval of all future renderings. If a generated example contains an unacceptable claim, assume related variants may need attention as well. Improve the landing-page source, refine any available guidelines, and review the campaign after it is live.

A practical review of each generated example

Before proceeding, evaluate the sample against the destination and your advertising obligations:

  • Accuracy: Does every factual statement appear on the landing page and remain current?
  • Scope: Does the wording describe the product, service, location, audience, and availability actually offered?
  • Claims: Are discounts, guarantees, performance statements, health claims, and time limits qualified where necessary?
  • Brand language: Are names, capitalization, trademarks, and required disclaimers correct?
  • Intent: Would a person clicking the line reach a page that fulfills the promise?
  • Policy risk: Does the wording create a prohibited or restricted-content concern even if the landing page itself is compliant?
  • Clarity: Is the sentence understandable without relying on context that only appears elsewhere on the page?

This review is especially important when the page contains multiple products, regional variants, dynamic prices, user-generated text, or old metadata. Extractive systems can surface wording that is technically present but unsuitable as an ad.

Where to inspect generated assets after launch

Once the campaign is running, Google Ads identifies Search customized text assets with Google AI in the Added by column. Use that label to distinguish generated text from headlines and descriptions that your team supplied manually.

Asset-level and ad-level reporting

Ad-level and campaign-level asset reports can include impressions, spend, conversions, and other performance metrics. These views help you inspect an individual generated headline or description and understand whether it has actually received delivery.

Campaign-level reporting

Google calls campaign-level asset reporting the best way to access text customization reporting at scale. It is the appropriate starting point when several ad groups or campaigns contain generated assets and you need a consolidated view.

Combination Reporting

Combination Reporting identifies ad combinations that contain customized text assets. It shows impressions and common combinations, allowing you to see which assembled versions were served most often rather than judging a headline in isolation.

Troubleshoot a missing or weak preview

The preview control is missing

Confirm that you are working in a Search campaign and that you are looking in the campaign’s asset settings. Google’s naming and navigation have been changing as text customization is incorporated into AI Max, so an older “automatically created assets” screenshot may not match the current interface. If the account has migrated, search the campaign settings for Asset optimization, AI Max, or text customization.

No URL is available

The sample requires a final landing page URL. Add the ad-level destination and select Preview examples again. If you only supplied keyword-level destinations, generation can be limited.

Only a few assets appear

Check whether the landing page has enough clear, relevant text and whether restrictive guidelines are excluding candidates. A page with limited content can produce fewer generated assets, and filters can remove otherwise possible examples.

The wording is irrelevant

Review the page title, visible copy, meta tags, existing ads, and ad-group keywords for stale or conflicting information. Because those inputs can influence generation, correcting the source material is more reliable than treating one preview sentence as an isolated error.

The panel takes longer than expected

Google says examples are mostly generated in under 30 seconds, not that every request completes within that time. Wait for the panel to finish, verify the URL loads correctly, and retry if the interface reports an error.

Do not confuse the sample panel with a shareable preview link

Google’s general ad-preview documentation also describes shareable previews that people without Google Ads access can open. Those links remain active for 14 days and cannot be renewed after they expire. They are useful for showing a creative preview to another person, but they are not the same feature as the Search campaign text-customization sample panel.

The text-customization panel samples possible generated headlines and descriptions from a campaign context. A general shareable preview is a presentation of an ad preview. Use the former to inspect potential AI-created text and the latter only when you need to share a preview externally.

Account migration and changing menu labels

Google Help states that campaigns using text customization, formerly automatically created assets, would automatically upgrade to AI Max beginning in September 2026. The documentation does not establish that migration is complete for every account. On October 16, 2026, the safest approach is to check the campaign’s current settings rather than assume that a legacy menu label still exists.

If an instruction written before the migration tells you to find “automatically created assets,” look for its current equivalent under AI Max and Asset optimization. Do not enable AI Max merely to view examples; previewing can be performed without opting into text customization, while live use of the feature requires the relevant AI Max campaign setting.

Recommended workflow for cautious advertisers

  1. Clean and verify the final landing page, including visible copy and metadata.
  2. Set up the Search campaign far enough to expose Asset optimization.
  3. Enter the ad-level final URL and run Preview examples.
  4. Read every displayed headline and description for factual, brand, policy, and destination consistency.
  5. Use available text guidelines only for requirements you can define clearly; loosen them if they eliminate all examples.
  6. Decide separately whether the campaign should opt into AI Max and live text customization.
  7. After launch, use the Added by column, campaign-level asset reporting, and Combination Reporting to identify delivery and performance.
  8. Recheck assets after substantial landing-page, keyword, or ad changes, remembering that Google says customized text is refreshed as needed at least every 48 hours.

Bottom line

To preview what Google Ads may write for a Search campaign, use the campaign’s Asset optimization section, supply the final landing page URL, and choose Preview examples. You can inspect up to 10 representative headlines and descriptions without enabling text customization. Treat the output as an incomplete, changing sample; verify the source page and guidelines yourself, then monitor assets marked Google AI after launch.
