If Windows Update keeps reinstalling a graphics driver that causes crashes, flicker, black screens, or poor performance, recover the working driver first and then apply the narrowest control your edition and management setup supports. In most cases the sequence is: Device Manager → Roll Back Driver, restart, then have an administrator exclude driver updates from Windows quality updates or apply a device-specific installation restriction. Pausing updates can buy time, but it is not a permanent block.
What to do when Windows Update keeps reinstalling my graphics driver
Use this order:
- Roll back the display driver in Device Manager if the previous version is still available.
- Restart and test the display before changing update policies.
- Choose a prevention control: an administrator can enable Do not include drivers with Windows Updates, or use a more targeted Device Installation restriction for a particular graphics device.
- Install a compatible replacement only from the computer or graphics-card manufacturer if rollback is unavailable or the old driver is unusable.
The right control depends on Windows edition, whether the computer is managed by an organization, and whether you need to stop all ordinary driver updates or only one device. Do not disable Windows Update altogether; that creates a broader security and maintenance problem than the graphics-driver issue.
First, restore the working driver
How to roll back a graphics driver
Rollback is the immediate recovery step after a display-driver update causes trouble. It requires administrator permission and works only when Windows still has a previous driver that can be restored.
- Sign in with an account that can approve administrator actions.
- Open Device Manager. You can search for it from the Windows taskbar.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the affected graphics adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver, provide a reason if Windows asks, and confirm.
- Restart the computer, then check whether the display problem has stopped.
If Roll Back Driver is unavailable or disabled, Windows does not have a previous driver available through that control. Do not treat the disabled button as a hidden setting you can force on; move to a compatible driver from the manufacturer and then configure update management.

If the screen is difficult to use
When the faulty driver leaves the screen unstable, perform the same Device Manager procedure as soon as you can operate Windows reliably. If normal display output is not usable, use the recovery options already available on the computer to reach Windows and then complete the rollback with administrator approval. The key requirement is still the same: a prior driver must exist for the rollback command to be offered.
Understand what the Windows Update policy actually blocks
On a policy-managed Windows computer, Microsoft documents the policy named Do not include drivers with Windows Updates. When enabled, it excludes driver updates from Windows quality updates. This is an update-wide control: it is not a switch that names one graphics adapter, and it does not promise that every driver-related installation will be stopped.
Microsoft documents the policy for Windows 10 version 1607 and later and Windows 11, but the editor and configuration options available to you depend on the Windows edition and on whether an organization manages the device. A Home installation may not expose the same local Group Policy interface. If the computer belongs to an employer or school, its IT administrator may control the setting and may prevent you from changing it.

The driver-exclusion policy has documented limits. Microsoft states: “This policy won’t apply to updates to drivers provided with the operating system (which will be packaged within a security or critical update) or to feature updates, where drivers might be dynamically installed to ensure the feature update process can complete.”
In practical terms, enabling the policy can stop ordinary driver delivery through Windows quality updates, but it is not a guaranteed firewall around the graphics stack. A security or critical update can contain an operating-system driver, and a feature update can dynamically install a driver needed to finish the upgrade.

Enable “Do not include drivers with Windows Updates” with Group Policy
Requirements
- An edition of Windows that provides the relevant Group Policy configuration.
- Administrator or policy-management rights.
- Permission to change the computer-wide update policy. On an organization-managed device, local changes may be overwritten by central management.
Configuration path
- Open the local or organization-managed Group Policy editor with an account authorized to change computer policies.
- Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update.
- Open Do not include drivers with Windows Updates.
- Set the policy to Enabled, apply the change, and close the editor.
- Restart Windows, or follow your organization’s policy-refresh procedure, before judging the result.
This setting governs driver inclusion in Windows quality updates; it does not uninstall the driver already present. If the problematic version is installed now, roll it back or replace it first, then use the policy to reduce the chance of an ordinary Windows quality update putting another driver in its place.
Use the MDM policy on managed devices
Organizations managing Windows through mobile-device management can use Microsoft’s ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate policy. It serves the same general purpose as the Group Policy setting: excluding drivers from Windows quality updates on devices governed by the organization’s management system.
This is an administrator control, not a consumer toggle. If you do not administer the device’s MDM policies, ask the organization’s IT team to evaluate the setting, the affected graphics model, and the documented exceptions. A local user cannot reliably override an organization’s policy assignment.
For one graphics device, consider Device Installation restrictions
Device Installation policies are the more targeted option when an administrator must prevent installation of a specified graphics device rather than exclude ordinary driver updates for the entire computer. Administrators can create restrictions that match a device’s hardware IDs or device-instance IDs.
Why this is an advanced control
- You must identify the correct device identifier. A restriction aimed at the wrong hardware ID will not solve the problem, while an overly broad match can affect more devices than intended.
- Policy precedence matters. Device Installation policies can interact with other allow or deny rules, so an administrator must check the complete policy set rather than assume one rule wins in every configuration.
- It is not the simple consumer toggle. These restrictions are intended for managed deployments where administrators can document the device match, test the result, and provide a recovery path.
Use this route when the broad driver-exclusion policy is too wide or when a particular adapter must be denied. Before applying it, record the device identifiers and make sure an approved working driver and a way to reverse the policy are available.

Can I hide or block only the problematic driver?
The built-in policy documented by Microsoft is not a one-driver “hide” command. Do not include drivers with Windows Updates excludes driver updates from Windows quality updates as a class, while Device Installation restrictions can target a device by hardware or instance ID. The latter is more precise but requires administrative identification and policy testing.
If the computer is not managed and does not expose the Group Policy editor, do not assume that a registry edit or an unofficial utility is an equivalent, supported solution. Confirm the Windows edition and management status first. A broad registry change can also interfere with unrelated devices and make recovery harder.
Use Windows Update pause only as a short-term measure
Pausing Windows Update can give you time to roll back the driver, obtain a compatible package, or contact IT. It does not permanently suppress the problematic driver. When the pause period ends, Windows checks for updates again and may download and reinstall the same or another driver.
Therefore, treat a pause as a temporary bridge, not as the prevention strategy. Before the pause ends, complete the rollback and apply the appropriate policy or device restriction if your edition and permissions support it.
Get a replacement driver safely
If rollback is unavailable, leaves the display unusable, or the restored driver is not compatible with your current Windows installation, obtain a driver from the official support site for the computer maker or graphics-card maker. Match the package to the exact model and Windows edition shown for that machine.

Microsoft Support advises: “Avoid downloading drivers from any websites other than the manufacturer’s official site.” Unofficial driver-download sites can provide the wrong model, an altered package, or an installer that introduces additional problems. The documented guidance supports the manufacturer’s site; it does not establish that a generic driver utility or replacement graphics card is needed.
Install in a controlled order
- Record the adapter name shown under Display adapters and the Windows edition in use.
- Download the matching package from the computer or graphics-card manufacturer’s official support page.
- Keep the downloaded installer available before changing the current driver, so you have a recovery option.
- After rollback or removal performed through the manufacturer’s documented process, install the compatible package and restart.
- Test normal display functions, then apply the update-management control appropriate to the device.
Troubleshoot common outcomes
Windows reinstalls the driver after a successful rollback
A rollback changes the driver currently installed; it does not by itself prevent Windows Update from offering another driver later. After confirming the rollback fixed the symptom, have an authorized administrator enable the driver-exclusion policy or apply a device-specific installation restriction. If neither is available, a pause can delay the next check but cannot provide lasting protection.
The Roll Back Driver button is missing
That means Windows has no previous driver available through Device Manager. Use the manufacturer’s official support site for a compatible package and ask an administrator to configure the appropriate policy. Do not download a replacement from an unverified driver site.
The policy is enabled, but a driver still appears
Check whether the installation came through one of the documented exceptions: an operating-system driver packaged in a security or critical update, or a driver dynamically installed during a feature update. Also confirm that the policy is applied to the correct computer and that an organization’s management service has not replaced the setting.

A Device Installation restriction has no effect
Verify the hardware ID or device-instance ID match, inspect competing allow and deny policies, and confirm that the rule applies to the computer rather than only to another organizational group. Because policy precedence and matching determine the result, an administrator should test with the exact adapter installed and keep a reversal procedure ready.

The computer is managed by work or school
Contact the administrator before changing Group Policy or Device Installation settings. Central management can reapply a different value, and a local change may violate the organization’s support policy. Provide the adapter model, the driver version that caused the issue, the date the problem began, and the result of the Device Manager rollback attempt.
Windows 10 support status matters
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. As of that date, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes through Windows Update for Windows 10. A driver policy can still control the behavior of an existing installation where the relevant tools are available, but it should not be presented as a way to restore ongoing Windows 10 support.
For a supported Windows installation, keep the operating system’s update and security requirements in view while troubleshooting the graphics driver. Blocking one class of ordinary driver update is narrower than disabling Windows Update and should remain the goal.

A practical decision path
- The screen broke immediately after an update: use Device Manager and select Roll Back Driver; restart and test.
- Rollback is unavailable: obtain a compatible package from the computer or graphics-card manufacturer’s official site.
- You administer a suitable Windows edition: enable Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Do not include drivers with Windows Updates.
- You manage devices through MDM: evaluate the ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate policy for the affected devices.
- Only one adapter must be denied: use a carefully matched Device Installation restriction based on hardware IDs or device-instance IDs, after checking policy precedence.
- You need time before making the change: pause Windows Update temporarily, knowing that Windows may reinstall the driver when the pause ends.
This approach restores usability first, limits the prevention control to the narrowest workable scope, and preserves Windows security servicing instead of disabling updates wholesale.
