Hall effect sticks reduce sensor wear, but they are not drift-proof. A magnet and magnetic sensor measure position without the rubbing contacts used in traditional analog sticks, yet the stick’s centering parts, firmware, calibration, dirt, impact damage, software settings, and connection can still produce unwanted input. To stop a controller moving by itself, identify the exact model and platform, use that manufacturer’s current procedure, verify the resting signal, and raise the center deadzone only as far as necessary. If the stick will not return consistently or remains faulty after supported calibration, the practical fix is manufacturer service or a compatible replacement module/controller.

Calibration is model-specific. The button sequence for a GameSir G7 SE is not the sequence for a Thrustmaster ESWAP X or XR, and a deadzone recommendation for one product is not a universal setting. The procedures below keep those distinctions explicit.

What stick drift is

Stick drift occurs when a controller reports movement while the stick is untouched. In a game, that can make a character walk, rotate a camera, or move a menu selection without any physical input. The same unwanted signal can appear as a cursor that slowly creeps or a tester dot that sits away from center.

Traditional analog sticks use a physical contact track to sense position. Dirt, oxidation, and wear at that contact can change the reported voltage, while a weakened return spring or other mechanical wear can leave the stick slightly off-center. Thrustmaster’s overview describes these conventional causes and the resulting symptoms in its joystick-drift explanation.

How Hall effect sensing helps—and what it cannot prevent

A Hall effect stick moves a small magnet with the stick. A magnetic sensor detects the changing field and converts it into a position signal. Because the sensing elements do not rub against each other, this arrangement removes a major source of contact wear. PowerA explains the design and its maintenance implications in its Hall Effect guide.

The rest of the mechanism still exists. The centering components can wear, a drop can bend or damage hardware, and heavy use can affect the return action. Firmware, a bad calibration, a software deadzone, environmental conditions, or an intermittent cable or wireless connection can also look like drift. Hall effect therefore lowers the risk of wear at the sensor; it does not guarantee that every stick will remain centered forever.

  • Sensor wear: reduced because the magnetic sensor and magnet do not make physical contact.
  • Mechanical centering: still subject to wear, damage, or an inconsistent return.
  • Electronic and software causes: firmware, calibration data, configuration apps, and game settings can create an offset.
  • External causes: dirt, moisture, impact, temperature, and a poor connection can produce unstable readings.

Before you calibrate: identify the real fault

1. Confirm the model, platform, and connection

Read the label, manual, or support page for the exact controller and note whether you are using Xbox, Windows, PlayStation, Android, USB, or wireless mode. Manufacturers can require different firmware, button combinations, and software for apparently similar products. Do not apply a sequence copied from another model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Check the resting signal

Release the stick and observe its position in the manufacturer’s tester or configuration application, if one is provided. A stable dot that sits just outside center suggests a small offset; a dot that jumps, sticks, or fails to return to the same place points more strongly to a mechanical, electrical, or connection problem. Thrustmaster’s ESWAP Pro instructions use Thrustmapper to check whether the resting dot is at the origin; the relevant support procedure is documented here.

3. Check firmware only as instructed

Use the controller maker’s own updater and follow its platform requirements. For example, Thrustmaster’s ESWAP X/XR calibration procedure requires firmware version 79.00 or later and says the update must be performed on a PC. Updating unrelated software or using a generic utility can introduce another variable rather than fix the input.

4. Separate an idle offset from a range problem

An idle offset appears when the stick is released. A range problem appears when the stick reaches an edge before the software sees full travel, or when one direction reports less movement than another. A calibration routine that records both center and full travel may correct either; a deadzone changes only the range near center and cannot repair a damaged mechanism.

Model-specific calibration procedures

Perform the procedure with the controller connected exactly as the manufacturer specifies. Keep the stick and triggers still whenever the instructions say the device is recording center, and reconnect afterward if required. These sequences are not interchangeable.

GameSir G7 SE

The G7 SE is a wired USB-C controller for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10/11, and Android, and it uses the GameSir Nexus app. Those are manufacturer specifications listed with the G7 SE manual, not an independent performance test.

  1. Connect the controller to a Windows PC while holding View, Menu, and the Xbox button to enter calibration.
  2. Leave both sticks and both triggers untouched. Press A to record the center position.
  3. Move both triggers to their maximum travel and rotate both sticks through their full range three times.
  4. Press A to save the range data.
  5. Unplug the controller and plug it back in before using it.

If the center was recorded while a stick was resting against an edge, the controller will treat that wrong position as neutral. Start again with every control released. If the controller does not enter calibration, verify the cable, the PC connection, and the manual’s current instructions rather than trying a different brand’s button combination.

Thrustmaster ESWAP X and ESWAP XR

Thrustmaster’s support article, dated March 15, 2025, applies to ESWAP X/XR controllers on Windows 10/11 PCs and Xbox One or Xbox Series consoles. It requires firmware 79.00 or later. The complete prerequisite and sequence are in the ESWAP X/XR calibration instructions.

  3. Press each stick button when prompted.
  4. Move each stick to the casing and back, then release both sticks so they are centered.
  5. Press A to save the center position.
  6. Rotate both sticks three times clockwise and three times counterclockwise. Do not rotate only the stick that appears faulty; the support procedure warns that doing so can calibrate the idle stick incorrectly.
  7. Press A to save the travel data, then press Y to complete the process.
  8. Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable before testing.

If the controller uses SH5 Hall modules, Thrustmaster says to reset the modules before calibration and adjustment. Check the exact module and controller combination before opening the unit or changing a module; a part that fits physically is not automatically supported electronically.

Thrustmaster ESWAP Pro: test first, then use a small deadzone

For ESWAP Pro controllers, Thrustmaster’s support guidance starts with a test in Thrustmapper. Release the stick and check whether the indicator returns to the origin. If a small, repeatable idle signal remains, increase the center deadzone gradually. The product-specific guidance recommends increasing it incrementally up to 5 percent; that figure applies to the cited ESWAP Pro instructions and is not a universal target for other controllers. See the ESWAP Pro drift guidance.

After each small change, test slow movement around center in the game or tester. Stop as soon as the idle signal disappears. A larger deadzone ignores more physical movement, which can hide a slight offset but reduces fine control for aiming, steering, or other actions that depend on tiny center movements.

Controllers without a published sequence

Use the maker’s manual, support page, or configuration app. Some products expose a software calibration command; others require a reconnect or provide no user calibration at all. If no official procedure exists, do not guess a button combination. You can still check the resting input, test another cable or port where applicable, and compare behavior in a second game, but persistent drift should go to the manufacturer’s support channel.

How to use a center deadzone without losing precision

A center deadzone is a range around the neutral position that the game ignores. Increasing it can suppress a small, stable idle signal. It cannot restore a stick that fails to return, jumps across its range, or has physical damage.

It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.
  1. Record the current value before changing it.
  2. Increase the center deadzone in the smallest available steps.
  3. Release the stick and verify that the character, camera, or menu stops moving.
  4. Test very slow input from center in every direction. If the first part of the movement no longer registers, the deadzone is too large.
  5. Return to the manufacturer’s support process if the value keeps rising or the signal is unstable.

Deadzone settings can exist in a controller app, the console, the game, or more than one layer. Change one layer at a time so you know which setting affected the result. Do not describe a 5 percent setting as a general Hall effect recommendation; it is tied to the ESWAP Pro guidance above.

Troubleshooting when calibration does not fix drift

The stick still moves while untouched

  • Repeat calibration with every stick and trigger fully released during the center step.
  • Check the resting signal in the manufacturer’s tester. A changing or jumping value indicates more than a simple center offset.
  • Try the supported cable, USB port, or wireless re-pairing procedure for the controller.
  • Test another game or the system-level controller screen to distinguish a game setting from a controller fault.
  • Use a modest deadzone only if the signal is small and repeatable.

The stick does not return to the same center

Inconsistent return is a warning sign for centering hardware, impact damage, or contamination. Calibration records a position; it cannot make a weakened spring or damaged pivot return reliably. Avoid compensating with an ever-larger deadzone, because that trades away precision while the underlying fault remains.

Only one direction or the edge of travel is wrong

Run the model’s full-range calibration again, moving the stick through every direction as instructed. On the ESWAP X/XR procedure, both sticks must be rotated in both directions. If one axis still reaches a lower maximum or reports erratically, contact support or investigate a compatible replacement module rather than forcing the stick.

The problem appears after an update or on one platform

Check the controller’s firmware and the platform-specific configuration. A controller can behave normally in its tester but drift in a game with its own deadzone or sensitivity settings. Revert only settings documented by the maker, and avoid generic “driver fixer” software; the relevant tools here are the controller manufacturer’s own updater and configuration app.

Cleaning and handling that reduce avoidable problems

Protect the controller from drops, crushing, dust, and moisture. PowerA recommends minimal maintenance for Hall effect sticks: use a dry, soft cloth and avoid liquids and harsh cleaning chemicals, as explained in its care guidance.

  • Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.

Thrustmaster’s general drift page mentions compressed air or a cotton bud as possible cleaning approaches for some conventional mechanisms. That does not make either method universal. Follow the instructions for your exact controller, keep debris from being pushed deeper into the housing, and never spray liquid into a stick opening unless the manufacturer explicitly approves it.

  • Store the controller where the sticks are not pressed sideways.
  • Keep food, drinks, and condensation away from the openings.
  • Transport it in a case or padded compartment instead of loose in a bag.
  • Do not repeatedly slam the sticks against their stops; full-range movement is for calibration, not normal play.
  • After cleaning or a firmware change, verify neutral and full travel before changing game settings.

Repair, replace a module, or replace the controller?

Choose the least invasive option that matches the remaining fault. A supported calibration is appropriate for a stable offset. A module replacement is relevant only when the controller is designed for it and the replacement is compatible. Opening a sealed controller can damage it or affect warranty coverage, and some repairs require soldering.

Option Best fit Check before proceeding Main trade-off
Recalibrate Stable center or range offset after a reset, firmware change, or module installation Exact model procedure, required firmware, and a tester that shows the input Will not repair worn centering parts or physical damage
Increase center deadzone Small, repeatable idle signal that disappears with a modest adjustment Where the setting is applied and whether slow center movement still registers Less fine control around neutral
Replace a stick module Supported modular controller with inconsistent return or a damaged stick Exact controller revision, module model, electrical fit, and calibration procedure May require disassembly, tools, or soldering
Replace the controller Non-modular unit with persistent hardware failure or repair cost that is not worthwhile Platform compatibility, connection type, warranty, and documented calibration support Higher cost and setup time than a software adjustment

Thrustmaster SH5 Hall module

The SH5 is a named Hall effect stick module for compatible modular ESWAP controllers. Compatibility is model-specific: the ESWAP X/XR support page requires SH5 modules to be reset before calibration and adjustment. Confirm the exact ESWAP model, module fit, firmware, and calibration steps on Thrustmaster’s support page before ordering or opening a controller.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Write down the exact controller model, platform, and connection mode.
  2. Open the manufacturer’s tester or app and observe the released stick.
  3. Install only the firmware the model’s support instructions require.
  4. Run the exact model-specific calibration, including any reconnect step.
  5. Test neutral and full travel in a system tester and a game.
  6. Raise the center deadzone gradually only when the idle signal is small and stable.
  7. Stop compensating with settings if the stick fails to return, jumps, or remains faulty.
  8. Follow the maker’s support or replacement process, checking module compatibility before disassembly.

The durable prevention strategy is careful handling, dry cleaning approved for the model, and prompt calibration when the manufacturer supports it. Hall effect sensing removes one important wear mechanism, but reliable centering still depends on the complete stick assembly and its software.
