To stop algae-ink prints from smudging, control four variables: the paper’s absorbency, the printer’s media setting, the amount of ink laid down, and how you handle the sheet while it dries. Use clean, dry stock, select the matching paper type and size in the print dialog, lower density when the sheet is overloaded, and let every page dry flat before stacking or displaying it. Fading is a separate issue: protect finished work from direct sunlight, and treat any long-term UV-resistance statement as a supplier claim unless you have tested your exact ink, printer, paper, and display conditions.
The procedure below is intended mainly for desktop inkjet printing. Screen-printing formulations sold as algae ink use a different curing process, covered in a separate section.
Why algae-ink prints smear
A wet or rubbing print is usually a media-and-process problem, not proof that algae pigment cannot print cleanly. Inkjet printers meter liquid onto a surface designed to accept a particular ink load. If the sheet absorbs too slowly, receives more ink than its coating can hold, or is moved before the liquid has set, the image can remain glossy, smear under a finger, or transfer to the back of the next page.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Damp, curled, dusty, old, or otherwise damaged sheets can change the distance between the print head and paper and can prevent even absorption. A paper setting that does not match the loaded stock can be just as damaging: the printer may apply a heavy “photo” load to plain paper or use an economical load on a coated sheet.

Algae ink is not one universal formulation. A black pigment intended as a drop-in replacement for carbon-black ink may behave differently from a water-based screen-printing product. Use the recommendations for the actual product and printer combination rather than assuming every algae formulation has the same drying or curing profile.
Choose paper that can accept the ink
Start with clean, flat, dry stock
- Keep paper in its packaging until you are ready to load it, especially in a humid room.
- Discard sheets with wavy edges, curled corners, visible dust, fingerprints, or a damp feel.
- Fan the stack and load only the amount your printer supports; an overfilled tray can increase rubbing at the feed path.
- Confirm which side is printable. On coated or treated stock, the printable side is often identified on the package or by a slight difference in texture.
HP’s ink-drying guidance identifies plain paper with ColorLok technology as suitable for text and graphics because the paper’s absorption characteristics affect wet or smeared output. That is a paper-performance recommendation, not a guarantee for every algae formulation. If you use another stock, follow its packaging specifications and run a small test before a long job.
Match the stock to the job
| Stock or situation | What to select in the driver | Handling priority | Typical smudge risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plain office paper, including ColorLok-type plain paper | Plain paper; the loaded size; normal quality unless a test shows excess ink | Remove pages without letting them rub together | Ink can stay wet if density is too high or the paper is humid |
| Thick or heavy stock | The driver’s thick-paper or heavy-paper option, with the exact size | Use the straighter feed path recommended by the printer and allow extra air-drying time | Slow absorption and contact with guides or rollers |
| Glossy or photo-coated media | The matching glossy or photo-media option | Keep each sheet flat and touch only the edges until fully set | Surface ink remains vulnerable to fingerprints and stacking |
| Duplex job | The correct two-sided mode and paper type | Do not reload or flip the sheet until the first side is dry | Fresh ink can contact rollers or the opposite face |
The table describes process choices, not guaranteed drying times. No algae-ink-specific numeric drying-time figure is established for these combinations, so use a test sheet to determine when your particular output is safe to handle.

Set the printer for the loaded media
Before pressing Print, open the printer’s properties or preferences and verify three fields: paper type, paper size, and quality or density. The labels vary by operating system and model, but the principle is the same: the driver uses these choices to control feed behavior and ink volume.

- Choose the exact size. Select Letter, A4, or the actual custom size loaded. A size mismatch can move the image into margins, guides, or an area that receives uneven support.
- Select the closest media type. Use plain paper for plain stock, thick paper for heavy stock, and the manufacturer’s glossy or photo option for coated media. Do not select a glossy mode merely to make text darker on ordinary paper.
- Set quality conservatively for the first test. Normal or standard quality is a useful baseline. High-quality modes can place more ink; use them only after a test confirms that the paper can absorb the load.
- Reduce density if the image is visibly wet. Many drivers expose an ink-density, color-intensity, or “less ink” control under Advanced, Color, or Paper/Quality settings. Make a small reduction, print again, and compare solid fills and fine text.
- Use the thick-paper setting when appropriate. This may alter the feed path or head clearance. It is preferable to forcing heavy stock through a plain-paper profile.
- Disable automatic color enhancements for diagnosis. If the driver offers vivid, photo-enhancement, or saturation controls, return them to neutral while troubleshooting. Extra saturation can disguise a paper problem by increasing ink load.
Record the settings that produce a clean test. A repeatable preset is more useful than changing several controls at once, because you can identify which adjustment actually solved the smear.
A step-by-step anti-smudge workflow
Use this sequence for a new algae-ink cartridge, refill, paper type, or printer. It separates paper preparation, driver settings, drying, and maintenance so a failure has a clear next check.
- Inspect the paper. Confirm that it is clean, flat, dry, within the printer’s supported weight range, and loaded printable-side up. Replace questionable sheets rather than trying to dry or flatten them in the tray.
- Print a small diagnostic page. Include ordinary text, a fine line, a medium-color graphic, and one solid dark area. A full-page photograph can hide the cause by combining high coverage with many colors.
- Match the driver settings. Set paper type, size, and quality to the stock. For thick media, select the thick-paper profile. If the dark area looks wet or leaves a mark when touched at the edge, lower density before increasing drying time.
- Watch the exit path. As each sheet leaves, keep the printed face from rubbing against the output guides, rollers, or the next page. If the printer has an output support or rear path, use the path recommended for the stock.
- Remove pages individually. Do not allow a growing pile to press fresh prints together. Place sheets printed-side up on a clean, level surface with enough space for air to reach the image.
- For two-sided work, print the lighter side first when possible. A page with a mostly white or lightly covered side is less likely to transfer ink while the second side is printed. Let the first side dry fully before reloading; the exact interval depends on the formulation, paper, humidity, and printer.
- Handle glossy output only by the edges. Keep it flat and avoid writing, filing, laminating, or stacking until the surface no longer feels tacky and a carefully chosen edge test shows no transfer.
- Clean and retest if marks persist. Run the printer’s nozzle-check pattern and, if indicated, its normal head-cleaning routine. Clean the paper path or rollers only as the printer manual directs; aggressive cleaning or unapproved liquids can damage the feed mechanism.
Epson’s troubleshooting guidance uses the same priorities: match the paper setting, reduce density when needed, remove pages promptly, and dry printouts completely before filing or displaying them. The advice appears in a WorkForce 635 FAQ published June 16, 2010; apply the equivalent controls and safety instructions in your current model’s manual.

Managing heavy coverage and duplex printing
Heavy or dark pages
Large black areas, gradients, and borderless photographs put more liquid on the sheet than ordinary text. If a solid area remains wet while small text is clean, the paper may be acceptable but the ink load is excessive. Reduce density or choose a less saturated quality mode before changing paper. Printing fewer pages at a time can also prevent fresh sheets from being pressed together, although it does not replace correct media selection.

Two-sided documents
Duplex printing introduces a second contact event: the dry-looking front may still be soft enough to mark when the printer turns or feeds it. Use the printer’s supported duplex path, print the lighter side first where the application allows it, and wait until the first side is fully dry before reloading a manually duplexed sheet. If the printer pauses between sides, do not shorten that interval unless a test proves the page is already safe.
Glossy media needs stricter handling
Glossy and other coated papers hold more ink at the surface instead of drawing it into fibers. This can produce a sharper image, but it also makes fingerprints, roller marks, and blocking between sheets more likely. Keep the output flat, separate sheets immediately, and touch only unprinted margins. Epson specifically advises avoiding immediate handling and drying glossy prints completely before filing or displaying them.
Do not place a warm print under a book, in a tight folder, or face-to-face with another print. Pressure can transfer ink even when the surface appears nearly dry. If you need to transport prints, use a clean interleaving sheet that the printer or paper manufacturer approves, and verify that it does not leave fibers or impressions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDiagnose the symptom before changing supplies
| Symptom | Likely cause | First corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Finger leaves a dark streak immediately | Surface is still wet, density is too high, or the media profile is wrong | Use the matching paper type, lower density, and allow the sheet to dry flat |
| Only glossy prints smear | Coated surface is retaining ink at the top | Select the exact glossy profile, separate sheets, and handle by edges |
| Back of a page receives an image from the previous page | Pages were stacked before drying | Remove sheets individually and increase the air-drying interval |
| Marks appear along one edge or in repeated bands | Contact with a guide or contaminated roller | Inspect the paper path and follow the manual’s roller-cleaning procedure |
| Fine lines break up or show gaps | Nozzle blockage or alignment problem | Print a nozzle check and use the printer’s standard cleaning/alignment routine |
| One side of a duplex page is smeared after turning | First side was reloaded before it was dry | Extend the first-side drying interval and print the lighter side first |
Change one variable per retest when practical. Replacing ink and paper simultaneously makes it difficult to tell whether the original problem was absorption, saturation, a blocked nozzle, or a dirty feed path.

Dry, store, and display prints to limit fading
Drying discipline
Keep finished pages away from direct sunlight while they dry. Sunlight can heat the sheet and accelerate changes in dyes, binders, or paper coatings before the image has stabilized. Epson’s official guidance also says to avoid touching the printed side and to dry printouts completely before filing or displaying them.
There is no algae-ink-specific universal drying time to quote. The safe interval changes with paper coating, ink coverage, room temperature, humidity, airflow, and whether the printer laid down one or several passes. Use a sacrificial test sheet from the same batch: check a dense area and a fine line at increasing intervals, touching only a margin or an area you will not display. If either transfers, continue drying.
Storage and display
- Store completely dry sheets in a clean, dry folder or box rather than a humid tray.
- Keep printed faces from rubbing against one another; use suitable interleaving for archival or presentation work.
- Display valuable work behind glazing or in a location out of direct sun. Indoor light exposure still varies, so avoid assuming that a supplier’s UV statement equals a guaranteed room-life.
- Keep the paper and ink away from condensation, kitchens, bathrooms, and other high-humidity locations.
What is known about algae ink and fading
Living Ink Technologies states that its black Algae Ink™ pigment meets the performance expectations of traditional carbon black for “intensity and resistance to UV light degradation,” and says that it “won’t fade.” The company also describes Algae Ink™ as a drop-in replacement for carbon-black-based inks compatible with existing printer equipment. These are supplier statements, not an independently quantified lifetime guarantee.

The statement does not provide a numeric fade-retention result, a tested number of display years, a specific paper, or a defined light dose. Therefore, it cannot establish how long a print made with a different algae formulation, printer, paper, or coating will retain its appearance. For products, signage, or artwork where durability matters, test the exact production combination under the intended indoor-light conditions and keep a reference sample for comparison.

Regardless of the pigment claim, protect prints while they dry and avoid direct sunlight during display. Paper yellowing, surface coatings, humidity, and mechanical abrasion can change the appearance even when the black pigment itself remains stable.
Screen-printing algae ink is a different process
Screen ALGAE INK™ is described in its quick-start guide as a water-based, bio-derived screen-printing ink. Do not transfer desktop inkjet settings such as paper type, nozzle cleaning, or driver density to this process. The screen, squeegee, substrate, and curing equipment determine the result.
Preventing screen blockage and premature drying
- Keep the ink covered between prints to slow drying in the screen.
- In a dry climate, use a humidifier as the guide recommends so ink does not skin over or dry in the mesh.
- Use the substrate and mesh preparation specified for the product; a screen-printing ink must be deposited evenly rather than absorbed through an inkjet coating.
Curing screen prints
The quick-start guidance pairs Screen ALGAE INK™ with a forced-air conveyor dryer for curing. Follow that product’s temperature, dwell, and substrate instructions rather than guessing from how a desktop print feels. A screen print that is surface-dry but under-cured can later rub off or fail during washing, while excessive heat can damage some substrates.
A practical durability test for a real project
If the print will be sold, mailed, framed, or used as a label, run a controlled trial before production. Test the exact algae ink batch, printer or screen process, paper or substrate, and finish that customers will receive.
- Print several identical samples, including the darkest coverage and the smallest important details.
- Keep one sample in a dark, dry place as a reference and place others in the intended storage or display environment.
- Check for transfer after drying, after stacking, and after ordinary handling such as inserting into a folder or frame.
- For duplex work, test both page orders and the real reloading procedure.
- For screen printing, test the cured print on the actual substrate and use the intended wash or abrasion conditions.
- Compare exposed samples with the reference at set checkpoints. Record visible changes rather than claiming a lifespan that has not been measured.
This simple control catches interactions that a paper specification or pigment description cannot predict, including a coating that stays tacky, a roller that marks one edge, or a display location with more sunlight than expected.
Quick Recap
Quick preflight checklist
- Paper is clean, flat, dry, supported by the printer, and loaded on the correct printable side.
- Paper type and size in the print dialog match the physical stock.
