There is no single “block AI” switch in Slack or Microsoft 365. Reliable prevention requires several controls working together: approve and scope Slack apps, restrict native Slack AI features, use Slack Enterprise DLP where its coverage fits, apply Microsoft Purview labels and DLP rules to Copilot, and control browser-based third-party AI use with Endpoint DLP on managed Windows devices. Test each data path—messages, prompt text, files, pasted content and uploads—because the controls do not cover the same content or use the same enforcement mode.
The practical objective is to make sensitive-data handling deliberate: users can use approved AI features for permitted information, while unapproved apps, labeled content and high-risk browser transfers are blocked or surfaced for review. The following configuration sequence is designed for administrators and security teams.
Start with the data paths, not the product names
“AI in Slack” can mean Slack’s own AI features or an independently installed app that sends conversation data to an external AI service. “AI in Microsoft 365” can mean Copilot processing content that a user can already access, Copilot Chat in a browser, or a third-party AI website reached from a managed endpoint. Each path has different controls.

Use this map when writing policy. A control that blocks a labeled file in Copilot is not automatically a control that blocks a user from copying the same information into an unrelated website.

Lock down third-party AI apps in Slack
Inventory every app, including internal builds
Begin with the installed-app list, not just the public Marketplace. Include custom and internally developed apps, test installations and apps added to private conversations. For each app, record its owner, business purpose, AI provider, requested scopes, conversations where it is installed, retention terms and the categories of data it may receive.
Slack explains that an app’s default access is limited to messages with the app. Adding the app to a channel or direct conversation gives it access to data in that location, subject to its granted scopes. Therefore, a low-risk scope set can still expose confidential material if the app is invited into a sensitive channel.
Require approval before installation
- In the Slack administration console, open the app-management area and enable the workspace’s app-approval workflow, or apply the applicable Enterprise app-management policy.
- Make the request process visible to members. Require a requester to state the business purpose, data categories, intended conversations and vendor terms.
- For each request, inspect the Marketplace privacy, security and compliance information, then compare it with the actual OAuth scopes and event subscriptions requested by the app.
- Approve only the minimum deployment needed. Keep an app out of restricted channels unless the data owner explicitly accepts the exposure.
- Review approved apps periodically and remove unused installations, stale test apps and apps whose scopes or vendor terms have changed.
Approval is a governance gate, not a guarantee that an external service will handle data according to your internal classification. Treat the service’s processing, retention and deletion commitments as a separate vendor-risk decision.
Separate native Slack AI from installed apps
Workspace and Enterprise administrators can manage access to native Slack AI features independently of third-party apps. In the Slack admin settings, review which members or groups can use each available AI feature and whether a feature can draw on files or third-party connectors. If a team does not need a feature, disable it for that group rather than leaving access open by default.
This separation matters during investigations. Disabling native Slack AI does not revoke an installed app’s scopes, and removing an app does not necessarily change native-feature access. Document the two decisions separately in your access-control register.
Use Slack DLP where the plan supports it
Slack documents DLP for Enterprise plans. It can inspect messages, text-based files and canvases against preconfigured or custom rules. Depending on the rule and workflow, the service can alert administrators, warn users or hide violating content. Define rules around the sensitive information types your organization actually uses—for example, regulated identifiers, credentials or confidential project markers—rather than creating broad patterns that generate unmanageable noise.

Assign an owner for the DLP dashboard and an escalation path for business exceptions. A hidden message or warning should lead to a documented decision: release it, remediate it, or keep it blocked. Record the rule, reviewer, reason and expiry date for temporary exceptions.
Understand what Slack DLP does not inspect
Do not describe Slack DLP as universal AI-prompt inspection. Slack lists material exclusions, including non-text media, AI summaries, certain workflow data, content held by external file hosts and files over 100 MB. A policy that catches a sensitive phrase in a message may not catch the same information inside an image, a generated summary or an externally hosted attachment. Validate each exclusion against your threat model and add a compensating control where necessary.
Where built-in coverage is insufficient, Slack identifies partner DLP services as a possible extension. Compare each service’s supported content, enforcement rights, retention, ingestion method and data handling. Do not assume that a partner can inspect every Slack surface or prevent every AI transfer.
Protect Microsoft 365 Copilot with Purview
Classify content before writing blocking rules
Microsoft Purview sensitivity labels provide the classification and protection layer that Copilot policies can use. Review the labels’ access, encryption and usage-rights settings before relying on them. Copilot operates in the initiating user’s security context: it should not grant a user access to information that the user could not otherwise retrieve. Encrypted content also requires the appropriate usage rights for AI retrieval.
Keep label definitions understandable to employees and data owners. A label that is technically available but rarely applied will not protect unclassified content. Combine automatic or recommended labeling with training and periodic sampling so that the policy reflects how people actually work.

Configure DLP rules for Copilot prompts and items
- In the Microsoft Purview portal’s Data Loss Prevention policy workflow, choose the Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Chat policy location documented for your tenant.
- Create or edit rules for sensitive information types that must not be processed in prompt text. Select the action that blocks prompt processing when a match is found, and define the notification and incident-reporting behavior for your administrators.
- Add conditions for sensitivity labels on files or emails that Copilot must not process. The documented action excludes selected labeled items from processing rather than changing the user’s underlying permissions.
- Scope the policy to the required users, groups or locations, and document exclusions for approved business workflows.
- Review alerts and policy matches with the content owner and security team. Tune sensitive-information thresholds before expanding the scope.
Prompt rules and item rules are different checks. A rule that recognizes a sensitive information type typed into a prompt does not prove that an uploaded document is scanned by the same policy.

Move deliberately from simulation to enforcement
Microsoft’s default Copilot DLP policy starts in simulation mode. Simulation can record activity and generate alerts, but it does not block prompt processing. Use this period to measure expected matches, identify legitimate workflows and correct overbroad sensitive-information types. Change the policy to enforcement only after the owners understand the impact; then verify with a controlled test that a prohibited prompt is actually denied.
Test the direct-upload edge case
The cited Copilot DLP policy documentation states that files directly uploaded in prompts are not scanned by that policy. Do not infer that a prompt rule protects an uploaded spreadsheet, image or document. Test the upload path separately and use labels, permissions, endpoint controls or another approved mechanism to address the gap. Treat an upload test as a required acceptance criterion, not an optional demonstration.
Control browser-based third-party AI use
Purview controls for Copilot and Endpoint DLP controls for unrelated AI websites are distinct policy locations and deployment paths. For third-party generative-AI sites, evaluate Endpoint DLP on onboarded Windows devices. Microsoft documents warning or blocking sensitive paste and sharing actions, with support depending on the site, browser and endpoint configuration.

- Confirm that the Windows devices handling sensitive work are onboarded to the organization’s endpoint-management and Endpoint DLP service.
- Define the sensitive information types and sensitivity labels that should trigger a warning or block when a user pastes or shares data with a browser-based AI site.
- Start with audit or warning behavior where the business needs visibility into legitimate use. Identify the sites, browsers and workflows that generate matches.
- Move high-confidence cases to blocking and leave a documented exception path for approved tools.
- Repeat the test in every supported browser and on representative device builds. A result on one browser is not evidence that another browser has identical coverage.
Microsoft also documents block-paste and label-based file-blocking capabilities for Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat web. Treat those as web-specific controls and verify that the site, browser, label and device combination is supported in your tenant before promising prevention.

A rollout sequence that produces evidence
1. Define classifications and owners
List the information that must not leave approved systems, map it to Purview labels or sensitive-information types, and identify the Slack channels, files and canvases where it appears. Assign one owner for Slack app approvals, one for Microsoft policy administration and one for incident review. Without named owners, alerts become unattended notifications.
2. Establish an approved-AI register
Record each approved native feature, third-party Slack app and browser-based AI site. For every entry, state the permitted data classes, user groups, deployment location, retention expectation and business owner. Mark unapproved services as prohibited and explain the request path so employees have a workable alternative.

3. Configure Slack controls
Turn on app approval or the relevant Enterprise app-management policy, review existing installations and remove apps that cannot justify their scopes. Then review native Slack AI access and configure DLP rules if the workspace is on a supported Enterprise plan. Publish the DLP exclusions in administrator and user guidance so teams do not mistake message scanning for complete coverage.
4. Configure Microsoft controls
Validate label permissions and encryption rights, create Copilot prompt and item rules in Purview, and leave the default policy in simulation while you tune it. Capture the expected behavior for a matched prompt, a labeled email, a permitted item and a direct upload. Move to enforcement only when the test results and exception process are accepted by the data owners.
5. Add endpoint controls for browser routes
Onboard the Windows devices in scope, configure warning or blocking rules for sensitive paste and sharing, and verify the supported browser/site combinations. Include Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat web tests where that is part of the organization’s workflow.
6. Run a repeatable test matrix
- Paste a synthetic sensitive identifier into an approved and an unapproved Slack conversation.
- Invite an approved Slack app to a permitted channel, then test the same app in a restricted channel.
- Place the synthetic value in a Slack text file, canvas, image and externally hosted attachment to confirm which DLP paths match.
- Submit a Copilot prompt containing a selected sensitive information type while the policy is in simulation, then repeat after enforcement.
- Ask Copilot to retrieve a labeled file that the policy excludes, and verify that the initiating user’s permissions and label rights are respected.
- Upload a file directly in a Copilot prompt and record the result; do not treat it as covered until a control demonstrably evaluates it.
- Paste labeled and unlabeled content into a browser-based third-party AI site from an onboarded Windows device, using every browser the organization supports.
Keep timestamps, policy versions, device identity, browser version, expected result and observed result for each test. Re-run the matrix after policy edits, major client updates or changes to an app’s scopes.

Native Slack AI settings do not govern independently installed apps. Review app installations, scopes and conversation placement, then enforce approval for future requests.

It does not. Non-text media, AI summaries, certain workflow data, externally hosted files and files over 100 MB are among the documented exclusions. Add endpoint or workflow controls for routes outside Slack DLP’s inspection.

“Copilot DLP is blocking, but users still get results.”
Check the policy mode first. Simulation records and can alert but does not block. Then verify that the prompt, item location, label and user are in policy scope.
“A prompt rule protects uploaded documents.”
The documented Copilot policy does not scan files directly uploaded in prompts. Test that path independently and apply labels, rights, endpoint controls or an approved-process restriction.
“A browser block on one device proves all browsers are protected.”
Endpoint DLP support depends on the site, browser and configuration. Validate each supported combination and confirm that the device is onboarded and reporting activity.

For Slack apps, compare the vendor’s privacy, security and compliance information with the actual scopes and conversation access. Reassess when scopes, ownership or terms change.
Operate the controls after launch
Prevention is a managed process rather than a one-time setting. Review Slack app inventory and scopes on a fixed schedule, inspect DLP alerts for false positives and missed content types, and track every exception to an owner and expiry date. In Microsoft 365, review Purview simulation and enforcement reports, label adoption, encrypted-content access failures and endpoint events. Feed recurring incidents back into classification, training and approved-tool decisions.
Measure coverage by path: native feature, third-party app, message, file, browser paste and upload. A policy is ready for production only when its license, plan, device, browser, content type and enforcement mode are known, tested and documented. This evidence-based approach avoids promising that one control blocks every route to every AI service.
Bottom line
Use Slack governance to approve apps and limit their scopes, manage native Slack AI separately, and add Enterprise DLP with its exclusions understood. Use Purview labels and Copilot DLP to restrict selected prompts and labeled items, then use Endpoint DLP for browser-based third-party AI on onboarded Windows devices. Keep simulation and upload behavior in your test plan, assign people to review alerts and exceptions, and communicate exactly which data paths are—and are not—covered.
