The most reliable way to keep passwords, API keys, tokens, connection strings, and encryption keys out of application logs is to make logging opt-in by field. Define each event, allow-list the small set of safe fields it needs, and send all application and telemetry output through a reviewed boundary. Do not serialize whole requests, responses, objects, configuration files, or exception arguments and hope a redaction filter catches every secret.
Secret-safe logging is a design, testing, and operations process. You must cover normal and debug output, framework and library messages, error tracking, tracing, CI/CD output, log shipping, access controls, retention, and the response plan for credentials that have already been recorded.
What counts as a secret in a log?
A secret is any value that can authenticate, authorize, decrypt, connect, or otherwise grant access when reused. Treat the following as prohibited in raw form unless a documented security purpose requires a carefully controlled representation:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Passwords and password-reset or recovery values.
- Session identifiers, bearer tokens, refresh tokens, signed cookies, and authorization headers.
- API keys, service-account credentials, private keys, encryption keys, and signing keys.
- Database, message-broker, storage, and other connection strings containing credentials.
- One-time codes, client secrets, webhook signing secrets, and bootstrap credentials.
- Personal, health, payment, or regulated data when your policy or law classifies it as sensitive.
OWASP logging guidance says primary secrets such as session identifiers, access tokens, authentication passwords, database connection strings, and encryption keys should generally be removed, masked, sanitized, hashed, or encrypted rather than logged directly. Omission is preferable when the value has no diagnostic purpose. A hash can still be sensitive and can enable correlation or offline guessing, so it is not an automatic safe substitute.

Direct and indirect exposure
Direct exposure is obvious: a debug statement prints an Authorization header or a database URL. Indirect exposure is more common in mature systems. A request logger may capture a complete JSON body; an exception may include constructor arguments; a framework may dump environment variables during startup; an APM agent may forward raw headers; or a support bundle may include configuration files. A secret can also appear after URL decoding, in a stack trace, in a serialized object property, or in a copied command line.
Logging is therefore a data-flow problem, not merely a search-and-replace problem. Inspect every component that can create, enrich, format, ship, store, export, or display an event.
How common is the problem?
The OWASP Secure Logging Benchmark survey asked 102 respondents which problems they had encountered; respondents could select multiple answers. In that self-reported sample, 44.1% had encountered sensitive information in logs, 35.3% had encountered authentication information, 43.1% had encountered information disclosure through logs, and 11.8% had encountered log poisoning. These figures describe reported experiences in that survey, not the prevalence of leakage across all applications or organizations. Information disclosure is broader than secret leakage and can include excessive diagnostic detail.
Start with an allow-list event design
Before changing logger calls, inventory sensitive data and classify it. Mark fields as prohibited, restricted, or safe for a specific purpose. Then define an event schema that names the event and selects only the fields needed for detection, troubleshooting, or audit.
Use a small, explicit schema
An authentication failure might need an event name, timestamp, outcome, reason category, tenant or account identifier in a non-secret form, source network classification, and a correlation identifier. It does not need the submitted password, token, full request body, or complete headers. An authorization denial might record the action, resource type, policy result, and actor identifier subject to your privacy policy, without recording an access token or sensitive payload.

| Event purpose | Useful fields | Fields to exclude |
|---|---|---|
| Authentication failure | Event type, time, failure category, safe account or tenant reference, correlation ID, outcome | Password, access token, session cookie, authorization header, full request body |
| Authorization denial | Action, resource class, policy decision, safe actor reference, correlation ID | Bearer token, private claims, complete resource contents |
| Database connectivity error | Logical service name, operation category, retry result, correlation ID | Connection string, username and password, raw driver configuration |
| Administrative change | Action, target class, outcome, approved actor reference, change ID | Secrets changed, private key material, credential values |
An allow-list is safer than a deny-list. With a deny-list, a newly added request property can become a log field automatically. With an allow-list, new properties remain absent until someone decides they have a legitimate purpose and reviews their classification.
Make the safe choice the easiest choice
Provide event constructors or wrapper methods that accept named, typed fields rather than arbitrary objects. Make the approved event vocabulary part of the application’s shared logging module. Code review should flag calls that pass request, response, environment, configuration, headers, body, or exception objects directly to a generic logger.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor fields that genuinely need partial visibility, define one central masking policy. For example, a support workflow might need the last four characters of a reference, while an access token should be omitted entirely. Masking must match the formats your systems actually use, including prefixes, URL encoding, multiline values, and structured representations. It is not a reason to log a secret that has no operational purpose.
Build one logging boundary
Use the framework’s supported logging mechanism or create an application-wide handler that every module can reuse. Document the event vocabulary, field classifications, output formats, and failure behavior. The boundary should construct safe events before formatting and shipping them, rather than accepting an already serialized blob.
What the boundary should do
- Accept an event name and approved fields, not an arbitrary object graph.
- Classify or validate each field before it is emitted.
- Remove prohibited fields and apply approved masking rules.
- Sanitize untrusted text and encode it for the selected output format.
- Add safe context such as a correlation ID, service name, deployment version, and outcome.
- Provide consistent behavior for normal, error, and debug levels.
- Expose a testable final event so tests can inspect what will actually be written or forwarded.
Handle exceptions deliberately
Exception messages and arguments are data sources, not automatically safe diagnostics. A driver exception may contain a connection string; an HTTP client exception may echo a URL with a query token; and a validation error may include a submitted secret. Log a classified failure reason and a correlation identifier by default. Preserve detailed diagnostics in a protected channel only when the security and operational need is documented, and never return the raw exception to an end user by default.

Prevent bypasses
Search for direct writes to files, standard output, tracing APIs, crash reporters, metrics labels, and third-party agents. A module that bypasses the shared handler can defeat an otherwise sound policy. Restrict or lint high-risk APIs where practical, and make the approved wrapper available in every service template.

Review every path where data can escape
Inspect more than the main application logger. Build a data-flow inventory that follows a value from input to storage and onward to every destination.
Application and platform paths
- Normal and debug log levels, including temporary diagnostic flags.
- Request and response middleware, reverse proxies, gateways, and web-server access logs.
- Framework startup messages, dependency logs, database drivers, SDKs, and retry handlers.
- Unhandled-exception handlers, crash dumps, support bundles, and health-check diagnostics.
- Command output from build systems, deployment jobs, migration scripts, and infrastructure automation.
Telemetry and external destinations
Review tracing, APM, error tracking, metrics exemplars, session replay, and alerting integrations. Establish which headers, bodies, attributes, stack frames, and local variables each integration collects; where the data is sent; who can read it; and how long it is retained. Disable raw capture or configure explicit field filtering wherever possible.
Do not assume that an application-side filter runs before an external agent observes the request. Test representative dummy values at the point where the agent collects data and again at the final destination. Confirm that exports, dashboards, alerts, backups, and vendor-side retention follow the same policy.
Sanitize untrusted text and encode it correctly
Secret prevention and log integrity are related but distinct controls. An attacker can inject carriage returns, line feeds, delimiters, or escape sequences into a user-controlled value and make one event look like several events, forge fields, or corrupt a parser. OWASP recommends sanitizing event data to prevent log injection and encoding values correctly for the output format.

Structured logging rules
- Keep untrusted text inside a properly encoded field; never concatenate it into a log line or key.
- Normalize or reject control characters according to the destination format.
- Use the serializer supplied for JSON or another structured format instead of hand-building syntax.
- Define maximum lengths and truncation behavior so an attacker cannot flood storage with oversized values.
- Preserve the original value only in a separately protected forensic workflow when there is a documented need.
Sanitization must not turn a secret into a merely disguised secret. A token with line breaks removed is still a token; omit it or replace it with an approved non-reversible indicator.
Verify that secrets are absent
Redaction that has not been tested is an assumption. Add automated tests that place recognizable dummy passwords, tokens, keys, and connection strings in every relevant input and assert that they do not appear in the final emitted log, telemetry payload, application response, test artifact, or exported file.
Test the full matrix
- Success paths: submit representative inputs during normal operations and inspect structured events and rendered messages.
- Failure paths: trigger authentication, authorization, database, timeout, parsing, and validation errors; inspect exception handling and retries.
- Debug paths: enable the most verbose supported setting and repeat the tests. Debug output is a frequent source of request and response bodies.
- Serialization paths: test nested objects, URL-encoded values, multipart forms, multiline secrets, and secrets in exception arguments.
- Integration paths: inspect what tracing, crash reporting, APM, and log-shipping components receive before and after filtering.
- Fuzz and security tests: send control characters, oversized values, unusual encodings, and crafted delimiters to detect log injection and leakage.
- Performance and failure tests: verify that filtering does not cause dropped security events, unsafe fallback output, or a fail-open behavior when the logging service is unavailable.
Scan existing logs
Use a controlled scanner or query with known secret patterns and organization-specific formats. Search active stores, archived indexes, object storage, exports, backups, alert payloads, and local developer artifacts. Pattern matching is useful but incomplete: high-entropy identifiers, custom credentials, and encoded values may evade generic rules. Combine automated scans with reviews of event schemas and destination configuration.
Keep useful security events
Secret removal should not silence security monitoring. Retain authentication outcomes, authorization failures, suspicious session activity, administrative actions, rate-limit decisions, and classified failure reasons with safe identifiers and timestamps. Test both sides of the requirement: prohibited values are absent, and events needed for detection and investigation remain present.
Protect logs as sensitive systems
Logs often contain personal data, internal topology, identifiers, and diagnostic details even after secrets are removed. OWASP states: “The logging mechanisms and collected event data must be protected from mis-use such as tampering in transit, and unauthorized access, modification and deletion once stored.”

Access, transport, integrity, and retention
- Grant log access by role and purpose; review permissions periodically and remove stale access.
- Use secure transport when sending events across untrusted networks.
- Protect stored logs against unauthorized modification and deletion, and monitor administrative activity.
- Set a documented retention period based on legal, regulatory, contractual, and investigation needs; enforce it in every destination.
- Separate production log access from development and support access, and prevent sensitive exports to less-protected environments.
- Record which responders accessed sensitive logs during an incident.
Security controls around the log store do not justify putting raw credentials into events. They reduce the blast radius when a log account, index, backup, or export is compromised.
What to do when a secret is already in a log
Treat a discovered secret as exposed, even if you do not know whether anyone read it. Follow your incident process while preserving the evidence needed to understand scope.
- Contain access: restrict the affected index, file, dashboard, export, backup, and vendor destination. Avoid broad deletion that destroys evidence or integrity records.
- Identify the secret and scope: determine its type, validity period, services, environments, copies, and the time range in which it was logged.
- Preserve incident evidence: record relevant access history and chain-of-custody details in a protected incident record.
- Remove or quarantine the value: use the approved log-removal process while maintaining the integrity of the remaining record and documenting what changed.
- Revoke or rotate: invalidate the credential and issue a replacement. Prioritize active tokens, signing keys, database credentials, and credentials with broad privileges.
- Trace downstream copies: check analytics indexes, alerts, exports, backups, developer machines, support tickets, and external telemetry destinations.
- Fix the source: add a regression test, update the event schema or integration filter, and review whether other credentials followed the same path.
OWASP secrets guidance emphasizes a removal process that maintains log integrity and gives responders information about who accessed or used a secret and when. Rotation is not complete until dependent services, jobs, caches, and deployments use the replacement credential.

No single library or logger solves every path. Compare your design against these criteria before adopting it:
| Criterion | Questions to answer | Strong result |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Does it govern application events, exceptions, framework output, debug mode, CI/CD, and telemetry? | All known producers and destinations are inventoried and tested. |
| Default safety | Does it select safe fields before serialization, or rely on developers to redact afterward? | Allow-listed event constructors are the normal API. |
| Bypass resistance | Can a library, error handler, agent, or direct file write avoid the boundary? | Bypasses are blocked, reviewed, or detected by tests and static checks. |
| Diagnostic value | Can responders identify event type, outcome, time, and safe correlation context? | Security and operational events remain actionable without raw secrets. |
| Verification | Can tests inspect final logs and forwarded telemetry, and can historical stores be scanned? | Secret canaries, integration tests, and periodic scans cover every destination. |
| Operations | Are access, retention, transport, integrity, and incident cleanup defined? | Controls are documented, enforced, monitored, and rehearsed. |
A framework filter can be useful, especially for common headers and fields, but it should supplement—not replace—safe event construction. A centralized service can improve consistency, but it cannot protect data emitted by an unmonitored agent or a developer’s direct print statement. The right design is the one that covers your actual data paths and can prove its behavior.
A practical rollout checklist
- Inventory credential, personal, and regulated fields and assign classifications.
- List every log, trace, crash, metric, CI/CD, proxy, and telemetry producer and destination.
- Define allow-listed schemas for high-value events and prohibit arbitrary object serialization.
- Implement or standardize the shared logging boundary and safe event constructors.
- Review exception, debug, middleware, framework, and third-party integration behavior.
- Add sanitization and destination-specific encoding for untrusted values.
- Create canary-secret tests for success, failure, debug, serialization, fuzz, and integration paths.
- Scan existing stores, archives, exports, backups, and developer artifacts for historical leaks.
- Configure least-privilege access, secure transport, integrity protection, and enforced retention.
- Document and rehearse containment, evidence preservation, removal, rotation, downstream tracing, and regression fixes.
Current guidance and scope
The controls above align with maintained OWASP logging, testing, secure-logging benchmark, and secrets-management guidance. NISTIR 8587, published September 15, 2026, addresses token and assertion protection, verification, key management, lifecycle controls, and monitoring; it provides current credential-risk context but does not replace logging-specific controls. Guidance and framework behavior can change, so verify the exact settings and collection semantics for your stack before deployment.
