Before guests arrive, put The Frame in TV mode with a brief press of the Power button, verify the intended HDMI input or app, and test playback. Holding Power turns the television completely off rather than leaving artwork on screen. Samsung says Art Mode cannot be permanently disabled, so reliable hosting depends on using TV mode and reviewing the Art Mode, motion, light, and automatic-power settings that can switch or shut down the display.
Start with the two Power-button commands
The most important distinction is how long you press Power. The Frame uses the button for two different actions, and confusing them can make a normal mode change look like a fault.
Brief press: switch between TV and Art Mode
With the television on, press and release Power quickly. Samsung describes this as the TV/Art Mode toggle. Use it shortly before the event to leave the set in TV mode, then wait for the selected program, HDMI device, or app to appear.
Press and hold: turn the television fully off
Holding Power shuts the television down completely. This is useful when you want a dark screen after the event, but it is not the command to use when guests are watching. If the screen is unexpectedly dark, check whether the button was held rather than tapped before changing other settings.

Prepare The Frame before guests arrive
A short pre-event check prevents an automatic mode change from interrupting a film, presentation, or game. Perform it while you can still reach the television and its settings.
- Wake the set and select TV mode. Press Power briefly and confirm that the normal television picture appears instead of artwork.
- Choose the source guests will use. Select the intended HDMI input or streaming app and wait for it to display a usable picture. A television left on the wrong input can be mistaken for an Art Mode interruption.
- Start the actual content. Play a few minutes of the program, console output, or presentation that will be used. This confirms that the source and the Frame are both ready before people arrive.
- Observe the set in the room. Watch for an unexpected switch while people move nearby, lights change, or activity occurs outside a window. If the mode changes, continue with the sensor and automatic-behavior checks below rather than assuming the panel is defective.
- Keep the mode command clear to other hosts. Explain that a quick Power press changes modes and that holding the button turns the set off. This avoids an accidental long press when someone is trying to wake the television.
Review Art Mode controls in SmartThings
For Frame televisions from 2018 onward, Samsung says SmartThings can be used to review Art Mode behavior. The app requires a Samsung Account and an internet connection. Menu names and available controls can differ by model, region, and software version, so use the labels that actually appear for your set.
Open the relevant settings
- Open the SmartThings app.
- Select the Frame television.
- Open Art Mode.
- Select Settings.
Samsung lists Sleep After, Night Mode, and Motion Detector Sensitivity in this area. Review each one while the television is in the room where guests will watch it.

Sleep After turns Art Mode off after a period without detected motion. It is intended to save energy when artwork is being displayed, but a no-motion interval can make the screen go dark when a room is quiet. If the event involves a stationary audience, adjust or turn off the behavior if your model offers that control and it is the cause of the interruption.
Night Mode
Night Mode responds to ambient light. A room that becomes darker or brighter can therefore change how Art Mode behaves. Review the setting if the television changes state as evening light fades or room lighting is switched.
Motion Detector Sensitivity
The sensitivity control affects how the set responds to movement. Lowering or otherwise adjusting it can help when the sensor is reacting to activity that is not part of the viewing experience. The exact range and wording are model-dependent; use the value shown by your app rather than assuming every Frame has the same choices.

Check the television menus when SmartThings does not match
Samsung’s regional support instructions do not use one universal path for every Frame. Samsung UK’s May 26, 2023 guidance covers procedures for 2017–2023 model years and notes that older sets have different menu steps.
2022 and 2023 model guidance
For the listed 2022 and 2023 models, Samsung UK directs owners to check General and Eco settings. The relevant entries can include:
- Ambient Light Detection
- Power Saving Mode
- Motion Lighting
- Auto Power Off
After reviewing those items, open the television’s Art Mode settings and check the controls there as well. These labels are a model-specific route, not a promise that every later or earlier Frame will show the same menu.
Other model years and regional menus
Samsung Australia describes an Art Mode Options area, while Samsung UK’s instructions use different paths for some model years. If a listed item is missing, search the television’s Settings menus for Art Mode, Eco, General, or power-related entries and consult the instructions for the exact model number. Do not assume that a missing option is broken; it may simply be unavailable on that edition or software version.
32-inch models
Samsung’s UK guidance says its 32-inch instructions do not include motion detection. Those sets list Sleep After and Night Mode controls instead. Treat that as a specific size qualification, not as evidence that all small or large Frames share the same feature set.

Understand why the motion sensor can interrupt a room
The motion detector does not identify only the person watching television. Samsung gives examples of unrelated movement or light changes that can be sensed, including a flashing LED, a pet dog, and a car moving outside a window. Installation height and lighting conditions can also affect sensor performance.

Use a controlled test
- Leave the television in the state in which the problem normally occurs.
- Change one environmental factor at a time, such as switching a flashing indicator off or preventing a pet from entering the sensor’s view.
- Wait long enough to see whether the behavior recurs, then restore the factor and test again.
- Record which change affects the result before altering several settings together.
This approach distinguishes a genuine setting problem from a sensor responding to the room. It also prevents you from changing a useful control when the trigger is an external movement or light source.
Check the room, not just the menu
Look for status lights on nearby equipment, reflective or moving objects, animals, and traffic visible through a window. Changes in daylight and artificial lighting matter because Night Mode and the motion system can respond to environmental conditions. If the set was recently moved or remounted, its new height and viewing environment may explain why behavior changed.
Separate an Art Mode switch from a complete shutdown
These symptoms require different checks:
| What you see | First interpretation | Checks to make |
|---|---|---|
| Artwork appears while people are still watching | The set changed from TV mode to Art Mode. | Press Power briefly to return to TV mode, then review Motion Detector Sensitivity, Night Mode, and other Art Mode controls. |
| The screen becomes completely dark and does not show artwork | The television may have been turned off, or an automatic power behavior may have acted. | Try a brief Power press first; then inspect Auto Power Off, Power Saving Mode, and other model-specific power settings. |
| The picture changes when the room, window, or nearby equipment changes | A sensor or light-related behavior may be involved. | Test the environment, then adjust the applicable motion or Night Mode setting. |
A long Power press is a particularly easy source of confusion: it produces a full shutdown, not an Art Mode transition. If a host is using the remote under pressure, demonstrate the short press before the event starts.
Review automatic shutdown and energy settings
Samsung Australia’s troubleshooting guidance for a Frame that turns off points owners toward automatic shutdown options, software updates, and model-specific instructions. On sets that expose them, inspect Auto Power Off and Power Saving Mode in addition to the Art Mode controls.
Do not change every option at once. Note the current value, alter the setting most closely associated with the symptom, and test the television with the same program and room conditions. If the behavior remains, move to the next relevant option. This gives you a recoverable configuration and shows which setting actually mattered.
Install available software updates
Samsung’s support guidance recommends checking for available software updates when automatic behavior is not explained by the visible settings. Apply updates through the television’s normal software-update function, then repeat the same playback and room test. Update menus and timing differ by model and region, so follow the path shown on your set.

Use model-specific instructions when labels differ
If your television does not show the names listed in a support article, identify the model and year and use the instructions for that edition. A procedure written for a 2022 model should not be treated as a universal path for a 2017 set, and a regional menu can use different wording from the menu on your television.

Before the first guest arrives
- Press Power briefly and confirm TV mode.
- Open the planned HDMI input or app and verify a live picture.
- Check that the room’s lighting and nearby equipment are in their normal event positions.
- Run a short playback test while people move around the room.
- Keep the SmartThings settings or television menu path available in case a change is needed.
During viewing
If artwork appears, use a brief Power press to return to the program. Avoid holding the button unless you intend to shut the set down. If the change repeats, pause the program and identify whether movement, light, or an automatic interval coincides with it. Adjust the single relevant control rather than repeatedly switching modes without finding the trigger.
After the event
Use a long Power press when you want the display completely off. If you prefer artwork between events, a brief press can return to Art Mode later, but remember that Art Mode remains subject to the Sleep After, Night Mode, and motion behavior supported by your model.
Model and interface qualifications
| Situation | What Samsung’s guidance establishes | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Frame from 2018 or later | SmartThings can review Art Mode settings; a Samsung Account and internet connection are required. | Use SmartThings as an alternate settings path when the app and television are connected. |
| 2017–2023 procedures in Samsung UK guidance | Menu routes vary by model year; listed 2022 and 2023 models use General and Eco checks followed by Art Mode settings. | Match the instructions to the model year instead of copying one route to every set. |
| 32-inch guidance | Samsung says the listed 32-inch set lacks motion detection and provides Sleep After and Night Mode controls. | Investigate those controls; do not expect a motion-sensitivity menu on that model. |
| Any region or software version | Labels and feature availability can differ. | Use the labels shown on the television or app and check current model-specific support instructions. |
What cannot be permanently disabled
Samsung US states that “Art mode cannot be permanently disabled.” That means there is no supported master switch that removes Art Mode from The Frame forever. The practical solution is to leave the set in TV mode for the event, correct the automatic behavior that is causing interruptions, and use the appropriate Power command when you want the display fully off.
This limitation also explains why a reset of the mode alone may not solve a recurring problem. If the motion sensor sees a pet, flashing LED, or passing car, or if a light-related or power-saving setting is active, the same behavior can return until the relevant cause is addressed.
Quick Recap
Fast troubleshooting decision tree
- Is artwork on screen? Press Power briefly. If the program returns, continue with Art Mode and sensor settings.
- Is the screen fully off? Try a brief Power press. If it remains unreliable, inspect Auto Power Off and Power Saving Mode, then check for updates.
- Does the issue follow movement or changing light? Test the room for sensor triggers and review Motion Detector Sensitivity and Night Mode.
- Are the expected menu items absent? Check the model year, screen size, region, and software version. Use the instructions for that exact set.
- Does the behavior continue after settings and updates? Document the exact symptom, room conditions, model, and software version before consulting Samsung’s model-specific support instructions.
