A shared cache can mistake a React Server Components (RSC) payload for an HTML response and serve the wrong variant to later visitors. To address the Next.js cache-poisoning advisories, first identify the framework and versions actually deployed, then update to a currently patched release and verify that every CDN or reverse proxy handles RSC request variants correctly. Disabling shared caching for affected responses is an interim measure—not a substitute for patching.

What RSC cache poisoning means

React Server Components can produce different response formats depending on a request. A shared cache that does not distinguish those variants correctly may store an RSC payload and later return it at a URL where a visitor expects HTML. The result is a response-format mix-up, not necessarily remote code execution.

Two Next.js advisories address related but distinct cache risks. The May 2026 advisory, GHSA-wfc6-r584-vfw7, concerns RSC responses being served as the wrong variant when shared caches fail to partition responses correctly. A separate advisory, CVE-2026-44582, describes collisions in the _rsc cache-busting value that could poison cache entries under affected conditions. Treat each advisory according to its own affected releases and fix guidance; do not assume that fixing one automatically addresses the other.

Cache poisoning is also different from the React Server Components remote-code-execution and denial-of-service disclosures. They involve distinct failure modes and may have different affected packages and fixes.

First determine what is deployed

Do not rely only on the React version listed at the top level of a project. Frameworks and bundlers can bundle or depend on the RSC server packages differently, so check both the deployment and its dependency lockfile.

  1. Identify the deployed framework and release. Check the build artifact, deployment record, or runtime metadata for the Next.js or other framework version serving production traffic. Include every active deployment or release line, not just the code currently on your workstation.
  2. Inspect the lockfile for RSC packages. Look for react-server-dom-webpack, react-server-dom-parcel, and react-server-dom-turbopack, along with the framework or bundler versions that bring them in.
  3. Match each deployed version to its maintainer’s current advisory. Use the framework’s bulletin for framework-specific issues and the React advisory for React package issues. Check the exact version ranges and fix guidance that apply to your release line.
  4. Inventory the intermediaries. Record which CDN, reverse proxy, or other shared cache can store App Router or RSC responses, and establish who can inspect or change its cache key and caching rules.

The React Team’s December 3, 2025 advisory for CVE-2025-55182 lists affected versions 19.0, 19.1.0, 19.1.1, and 19.2.0 of those three react-server-dom packages. It names Next.js, React Router, Waku, Parcel RSC, the Vite RSC plugin, and Redwood SDK among affected frameworks or bundlers. The advisory describes an unauthenticated remote-code-execution flaw in decoding requests to Server Function endpoints; it also says an application could be vulnerable even without its own Server Function endpoint if it supports RSC. These details make it especially important to check the actual framework and package combination rather than infer exposure from a single dependency number.

Patch the specific issue on the release line you run

For the May 2026 Next.js response cache-poisoning advisory, the affected ranges are >=14.2.0 <15.5.16 and >=16.0.0 <16.2.5. The advisory lists Next.js 15.5.16 and 16.2.5 as patched releases for that issue. These are issue-specific minimum fixed releases, not a recommendation to stop upgrading at those versions. Consult the current bulletin for the branch you actually deploy before choosing a target.

The advisory says its fix makes request-header interpretation consistent between request classification and rendering, and enforces expected cache-busting behavior so that an RSC payload is not unexpectedly served from the original URL. Review the Next.js advisory for the affected versions and its current remediation guidance.

The separate Next.js advisory for CVE-2026-44582 says the issue involves collisions in _rsc values and that the fix strengthens the cache-busting mechanism. Check its release guidance independently; do not treat the response-variant fix as proof that this separate issue is fixed.

Security guidance changes as maintainers disclose and fix additional problems. For example, the initial React RCE advisory listed fixes in React package versions 19.0.1, 19.1.2, and 19.2.1, but later advisories addressed other issues. A React update dated January 26, 2026 described additional denial-of-service and source-code-exposure vulnerabilities, with fixes including 19.0.4, 19.1.5, and 19.2.4. A later React advisory lists fixes 19.0.8, 19.1.9, and 19.2.8 for another denial-of-service issue. Those version sets correspond to different issue scopes; none is a universal safe-version threshold. Follow the current advisories for the versions and framework you deploy.

Control shared caching while upgrades are in progress

If an affected deployment cannot be upgraded immediately, use the temporary controls in the relevant advisory. For the response-variant issue, the Next.js guidance is to configure the CDN or reverse proxy to key on relevant RSC request headers and honor the response’s Vary behavior, or to disable shared caching for affected App Router and RSC responses until the application is patched. The separate _rsc collision advisory likewise calls for correctly honoring Vary for RSC-related request headers or disabling shared caching for affected responses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Header-aware cache key: Confirm that the cache distinguishes requests using the RSC-related headers identified by the applicable framework advisory. A cache key that ignores a response-varying request header can collapse distinct response variants into one entry.
  • Honor Vary: Verify that the intermediary uses the origin’s Vary response information when deciding whether requests can share a cached response. Merely forwarding the header is not sufficient if the cache does not use it to partition entries.
  • Disable shared caching for affected responses: Where correct partitioning cannot be confirmed, bypass or disable shared caching for the affected RSC and App Router responses while the upgrade is pending. This reduces caching efficiency, but avoids relying on an unverified cache-key assumption.

Which option is practical depends on whether your CDN or proxy exposes cache-key controls, whether its behavior for Vary is documented and verifiable, and whether you can target RSC responses without disrupting unrelated caching. A provider’s support for RSC or a managed deployment does not by itself establish that a particular vulnerable application is safe.

How the available mitigations compare

Action Role What it depends on Residual concern
Upgrade to the patched framework or package release Permanent corrective action for the named software issue Identifying the affected framework, package, and deployed release line; following its current advisory Does not automatically address separate advisories or a different issue in another deployed component
Partition cache entries using relevant request headers and honor Vary Interim cache control where recommended by the advisory Correct CDN or proxy configuration and confidence that its cache actually applies the intended key and Vary behavior Configuration mistakes can leave variants sharing entries; it does not patch the vulnerable software
Disable shared caching for affected RSC responses Interim measure when safe partitioning cannot be established Ability to identify and bypass the affected response classes in the intermediary Reduced cache benefit for those responses; it does not patch the vulnerable software
WAF rules Supplemental edge defense against known exploit patterns Provider coverage and rule behavior for the traffic reaching the application Not a substitute for patching or correct cache behavior

Use WAF and hosting controls as an extra layer

Vercel’s security material describes WAF rules deployed for known exploit patterns, but its security bulletin warns: “WAF rules cannot guarantee protection against all possible variants of an attack.” A WAF can add a layer of defense, but it does not show that the application is running a fixed version or that a shared cache partitions RSC responses correctly.

When assessing a hosting or CDN setup, check whether you can inspect and control cache keys, how the service handles RSC-related request headers and Vary, and whether you can disable shared caching for affected responses. Treat provider mitigations as supplemental unless the relevant advisory explicitly says otherwise; keep responsibility for framework upgrades and application configuration in view.

Verify the fix across the deployment path

After upgrading and changing cache configuration, verify the exact production deployment and every intermediary that can cache its responses. Confirm that the running framework and relevant packages match the release guidance for each advisory, and that the CDN or reverse proxy applies the intended RSC-aware cache behavior. If you cannot establish that cache partitioning is correct, keep shared caching disabled for affected responses until you can.
