Prevent cord problems by matching the cord to the appliance and location, checking it before use, protecting it from pinching and abrasion, and routing it out of foot traffic. Stop using a cord that feels hot or shows damage. Replace a damaged household extension cord; do not try to make it safe with tape.

Start with the cord’s load, location, and condition

A safe setup depends on more than whether a cord fits the plug. Before connecting equipment, check three things: whether the cord is rated for the equipment’s power needs, whether it is intended for the location, and whether the cord and its connectors are intact. Then route it so it will not be crushed, abraded, heated, or walked on.

Extension cords are intended for temporary use, not as a substitute for permanent wiring. The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) says, “Extension cords should only be used on a temporary basis.” If a setup needs a cord every day or in a fixed location, consider whether a properly located outlet or other permanent solution is needed; have electrical work assessed by a qualified professional.

Compare the setup before you plug in

What to check What to look for Why it matters
Electrical load The cord’s rating must meet or exceed the connected appliance or tool’s requirements. Do not overload the cord. A cord that is not suitable for the load can overheat.
Location Use a cord marked for the intended indoor or outdoor setting. An outdoor cord should be marked for outdoor use. A cord needs to be suitable for the conditions where it is used.
Intended duty Distinguish ordinary household use from construction or other workplace use, where additional requirements may apply. Workplace rules are not a general specification for every household cord.
Condition Inspect the full cord, plug, connections, and strain relief for damage or looseness. Damaged insulation or connectors can expose users to shock or fire hazards.
Route Plan a path away from walkways, doors, furniture, sharp edges, heat, oil, and abrasion. Foot traffic and pinching can both create a trip hazard and damage the cord.

For consumer products, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) identifies product characteristics such as adequate wire size and sufficient strain relief. Its 2012 leaflet advises choosing cords listed by a recognized testing laboratory, for example UL, ETL, or CSA. Check the current cord label and manufacturer’s instructions for the rating and intended use; appearance alone does not establish suitability.

When comparing cords, do not choose by length, color, or the fact that a plug fits alone. First identify the equipment’s power needs from its label or instructions, then check that the cord’s stated rating meets or exceeds them. Confirm that its marking matches the intended location and that its construction is suitable for the type of use. Finally, inspect the connectors, insulation, and strain relief. A cord that fails any one of these checks is not made suitable by passing the others.

Prevent overheating before and during use

Choose a cord that meets or exceeds the connected appliance’s or tool’s power needs, and do not overload it. Do not assume that a cord is suitable simply because its plug fits. Use an indoor or outdoor cord as marked, and follow the cord and equipment instructions.

Overheating is a warning to stop, not a condition to monitor while continuing to use the equipment. A cord that is undersized for its load can become warm, and heat may also be noticed at a connection. OSHA training material notes that a warm cord or connection may indicate excessive current for the wire size. The sources do not give consumers a diagnostic method for determining the cause or calculating a safe load from appearance, so do not guess if the rating is unclear.

Watch for heat at the cord and connections

A cord that feels hot is a stop-use warning. ESFI advises, “Never use a cord that feels hot or is damaged in any way.” OSHA training material explains that a warm cord or connection may indicate more current than the wire size can safely handle. Do not keep using the setup to see whether it cools down, and do not touch or manipulate damaged wiring to investigate it.

  1. Stop using the appliance or tool and disconnect power if it is safe to do so. Grasp the plug rather than pulling on the cord.
  2. Do not reuse a hot or damaged extension cord. Replace a damaged household extension cord with one properly rated for the equipment and location.
  3. If the plug, outlet, or cord continues to heat, or a breaker repeatedly trips, discontinue use and seek help from a qualified electrician. The cited consumer guidance does not provide a safe do-it-yourself diagnostic procedure for these conditions.

Do not treat a warm connection as proof that only the cord needs replacing. The cord, plug, outlet, or connected equipment may be involved, and the available consumer guidance does not provide a step-by-step fault-finding procedure. Stop using the setup and get qualified help when heating persists or a breaker trips repeatedly. Repeatedly resetting a breaker or trying a succession of cords is not a substitute for finding a safe solution.

Do not conceal a cord or trap heat

Do not run an extension cord under a rug, through a wall, or through a ceiling. Concealed routing can hide damage and make heat harder to notice. ESFI specifically warns, “Do not run extension cords through walls or ceilings.” CPSC Publication 5032 also says, “Do not run extension cords under carpets, through doorways or under furniture.” Keep the cord visible and accessible rather than burying it beneath floor coverings or objects.

Concealment creates more than an inspection problem. A rug can hide a cord that is getting warm or beginning to wear, while furniture can put weight on it or pinch it. A doorway can repeatedly compress the cable each time it closes. Do not trade a visible trip risk for a hidden electrical risk; change the route or arrange a suitable permanent electrical solution for an ongoing need.

Prevent fraying, cuts, and internal damage

Damage can happen gradually: a door repeatedly pinches the cord, a chair leg crushes it, or the cord is pulled by its cable instead of its plug. A cord may also be harmed by sharp edges, abrasion, heat, oil, fasteners, or age. OSHA’s flexible-cord guidance describes these as causes of damage and warns that exposed conductors can create hazards.

Protect the full length and the connectors

  • Keep cords away from door and window edges, sharp corners, hot surfaces, oil, and abrasive areas.
  • Do not place heavy furniture or equipment on a cord, and do not allow regular traffic to crush or rub it.
  • Do not staple or nail a cord to a wall, baseboard, or other surface. Fasteners can pierce or crush insulation.
  • When unplugging, hold the plug and pull it from the receptacle; do not yank the cord.
  • Keep the cord’s plug and connector ends from being pulled, bent sharply, or used as strain points. Strain relief is intended to reduce stress where the cord enters a connector; damaged or loose ends are a reason to stop using the cord.

Pay particular attention to the places where a cord changes direction or enters a plug or connector. Pulling, sharp bending, and repeated pinching can stress these areas. Strain relief helps reduce stress at the connection, but it is not a reason to keep using a cord with a loose connector, cracked end, or other visible defect.

Inspect before use

Check the entire length rather than only the section nearest the appliance. Look closely at the plug, connector, and points where the cord enters them. Watch for cracked or frayed insulation, exposed wire, cuts, crushing, loose connections, or other visible defects. CPSC’s household safety checklist asks whether cords are frayed, cracked, or otherwise damaged; treat any such defect as a reason not to use the cord.

Inspection also means thinking about how the cord has been used since the last check. Was it closed in a door, run beneath furniture, stepped on, dragged across a sharp surface, or pulled out by the cable? CPSC’s checklist asks whether a cord is placed where it might be stepped on. If its route exposes it to repeated traffic or crushing, correct the route as well as checking for visible damage. A cord can be weakened without an obvious mark, so do not keep subjecting it to the same damaging conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a damaged consumer extension cord, replacement is the safe course. CPSC warns against inadequate repairs such as taping damaged insulation. Tape does not restore the cord’s original insulation, mechanical strength, or connector protection. Do not try to conceal a defect with tape or a cover.

Replace rather than attempt a patch if you find fraying, a crack, exposed wire, a cut, crushing, a loose connection, or any other damage. A floor cover, tape, or a different route does not restore a damaged cord. Keep suspect cords out of use so they are not accidentally plugged in again.

Route cords so people do not trip over them

First choose a route that does not cross a doorway, walkway, or other place people need to walk. Keep cords close to the edge of a room only if that path remains clear of pinching, abrasion, heat, and traffic. Do not solve a trip hazard by hiding the cord under a rug or putting furniture on top of it: a foot can still catch the cord, and the covering or weight can damage it.

Look at the whole route from the point of use back to the outlet. Consider where people enter, turn, carry things, or move equipment, rather than judging only the spot beside the appliance. A path that is clear in an empty room may become a trip hazard after furniture moves or foot traffic changes. Keep the cord out of the route rather than relying on people to notice and step over it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a crossing cannot be avoided

Rerouting is preferable. If a cord must cross a route, a compatible floor cord cover may help reduce the chance that someone catches a foot on it. Choose and install an accessory suitable for the cord and location, and keep the cord itself visible enough to inspect where practicable. A cover is not a repair: it must not be used to conceal a hot, damaged, or overloaded cord, and it does not make an unsuitable route or cord safe.

CPSC warns that heavy weights or traffic can crush insulation or break wire strands, creating shock or fire hazards. Keep the route clear of both people and objects, and reassess it if furniture, equipment, or foot traffic changes.

Do not assume a cord cover solves every problem. The sources do not test or endorse particular covers, so this is a possible accessory, not a product recommendation. It does not change the cord’s load rating or indoor/outdoor suitability, and it cannot make a damaged cord safe. If the cover itself creates an obstruction or the route remains exposed to traffic, reconsider the path.

Use workplace and construction guidance in the right context

Household recommendations and workplace requirements are related but not interchangeable. OSHA rules apply to covered workplaces. Under 29 CFR 1910.334(a)(2)(ii), defective or damaged equipment that could expose an employee to injury must be removed from service until the repairs and tests necessary to make it safe have been completed. Workers should follow their employer’s electrical-safety program rather than returning a suspect cord to use on their own judgment.

That rule is a workplace requirement, not a direction for householders to repair damaged extension cords. For household use, replace a damaged consumer extension cord. In a covered workplace, employees should report defective equipment and follow their employer’s removal-from-service and repair process; the equipment must not return to use until the required repairs and tests have made it safe.

Construction guidance has additional requirements for the circumstances it covers. OSHA’s construction material calls for three-wire cords for grounded equipment and hard- or extra-hard-service designations in covered construction settings. Do not treat those specific workplace requirements as a universal household-cord rule. OSHA’s guidance also emphasizes inspection, grounding, service rating, strain relief, and handling plugs rather than pulling on cords.

For portable tools at work, OSHA construction material also discusses GFCI protection in portable-tool settings. Follow the applicable workplace procedure and requirements; do not infer that a GFCI makes an overloaded, damaged, or poorly routed cord acceptable. Requirements depend on the workplace context, so household users should not apply construction specifications indiscriminately.

A practical cord-safety routine

  1. Before choosing a cord: identify the appliance or tool’s power needs and intended setting. Select a cord whose rating meets or exceeds the load and whose marking matches indoor or outdoor use.
  2. Before each use: inspect the complete cord, plug, and connectors. Do not use it if it is hot, frayed, cracked, cut, crushed, loose, or otherwise damaged.
  3. Before routing: plan to keep it out of doorways and walkways, and away from furniture, sharp edges, heat, oil, and abrasive surfaces. Do not run it beneath rugs, through walls or ceilings, or under furniture.
  4. While using it: avoid overloading, pinching, pulling, or crushing the cord. If it becomes hot or damage appears, stop using it.
  5. After use: unplug by holding the plug, not the cable. Put the cord away without creating tight bends or exposing it to damage before its next use.

Make the routine practical: select and route the cord before plugging in, then check it as part of normal setup. If the equipment has to be moved, check that the cord has not been trapped, pulled, or placed across a new walking route. After use, disconnect by the plug and store the cord so its insulation and connectors are not exposed to avoidable damage.

What to do when something seems wrong

  • The cord is warm or hot: stop using it. Do not continue operation to test it. Replace a hot or damaged extension cord; if the plug or outlet also heats, or a breaker trips repeatedly, seek qualified help.
  • The insulation is frayed, cracked, cut, or crushed: take the extension cord out of use and replace it. Do not tape over the damaged area.
  • The cord crosses a walkway: reroute it. If that is not possible, use an appropriate floor cord cover only for an intact, correctly rated cord, not as concealment or repair.
  • The cord is needed in one place on an ongoing basis: do not rely on an extension cord as permanent wiring. Discuss an appropriate outlet or wiring solution with a qualified professional.
  • The cord is used at work: follow applicable workplace procedures. Covered defective equipment must be removed from service under OSHA requirements until made safe through the required repairs and tests.

Do not wait for visible sparks or a complete failure before acting. A hot cord, damaged insulation, a loose connector, or a route that repeatedly pinches or crushes the cord is enough reason to stop and correct the setup. When the problem is electrical and you cannot identify a safe solution from the product instructions, leave it disconnected and seek qualified assistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my extension cord hot?

A warm cord or connection may indicate excessive current for the wire size, according to OSHA training material. Stop using a cord that feels hot; do not continue operation to see whether it cools. If the plug, outlet, or cord continues to heat, or a breaker repeatedly trips, discontinue use and seek help from a qualified electrician.

Can I tape a frayed power cord?

No. CPSC warns against inadequate repairs such as taping damaged insulation. Tape does not restore the cord’s original insulation or mechanical strength. Replace a damaged household extension cord rather than covering the defect.

How do I keep cords from becoming a trip hazard?

Route cords out of doorways, walkways, and other foot-traffic areas. Do not hide them under rugs or put furniture on top of them. If a crossing cannot be avoided, a compatible floor cord cover may help with an intact, correctly rated cord, but it is not a repair and does not make a bad route safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I run an extension cord under a rug or through a wall?

No. ESFI advises against running extension cords through walls or ceilings, and CPSC Publication 5032 says not to run them under carpets, through doorways, or under furniture. Concealment can hide damage, while coverings and furniture can also crush or trap the cord.

How often should I inspect an extension cord?

Check the full cord, plug, and connectors before use, especially after it has been moved or routed through a new area. Look for cracked or frayed insulation, cuts, exposed wire, crushing, loose connections, and other visible defects. Do not use a cord that is hot or damaged.

Are extension cords meant to stay plugged in permanently?

No. ESFI says extension cords should only be used temporarily, not as a substitute for permanent wiring. If a cord is needed in a fixed location or every day, consider an appropriate permanent outlet or wiring solution and have electrical work assessed by a qualified professional.

Do construction cord rules apply to every household extension cord?

No. OSHA’s construction guidance specifies three-wire cords for grounded equipment and hard- or extra-hard-service designations in the circumstances covered by construction standards. Those workplace requirements should not be treated as universal household specifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Choose a cord rated for the equipment and location, inspect it, and keep it visible and out of foot traffic, heat, pinching, and abrasion. Stop using any cord that feels hot or shows damage; replace a damaged household extension cord rather than taping it. For ongoing power needs, use an appropriate permanent solution instead of relying on an extension cord.
