Current MacBook Pro models do not use OLED panels. Apple’s specifications identify both the 14-inch and 16-inch models as having Liquid Retina XDR displays, so you are not managing OLED burn-in on the built-in screen. The practical precautions in this guide apply if you connect an OLED monitor, use a future OLED MacBook Pro, or simply want to understand a persistent mark that appears on a display.
Does the MacBook Pro have an OLED screen?
No. Current 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro specifications list Liquid Retina XDR displays rather than OLED. The 14-inch specification describes a 14.2-inch panel with a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, 1,000 nits sustained full-screen XDR brightness and 1,600 nits peak brightness for HDR content. The 16-inch model is also specified with a Liquid Retina XDR display.
| MacBook Pro model | Display type in current Apple specifications |
|---|---|
| 14-inch | Liquid Retina XDR |
| 16-inch | Liquid Retina XDR |
That distinction matters because OLED burn-in is a form of uneven, permanent pixel wear. It is associated with a bright, high-contrast image remaining in the same place for a prolonged period, especially at high brightness. A Liquid Retina XDR MacBook Pro is not an OLED panel, so OLED-specific burn-in prevention is not a requirement for its built-in display.

What burn-in is—and how it differs from image persistence
Temporary image persistence
Image persistence is a temporary after-image. Apple’s OLED display guidance says it can disappear after a few minutes of normal use. A faint outline after a static menu, window or game element does not by itself prove permanent damage.
When you notice a mark, stop displaying the same content and use varied content at ordinary brightness for several minutes. A full-screen video, changing web pages or another mixed workload gives the panel an opportunity to show different pixels. Do not repeatedly display a test pattern at maximum brightness while trying to diagnose the mark; that keeps the suspected cause on screen.
Permanent burn-in
Burn-in can occur in more extreme cases, such as when the same high-contrast image is continuously displayed at high brightness for a prolonged period. The resulting uneven wear remains visible because different areas of the panel no longer emit light identically. It is not the same condition as a temporary after-image that fades during normal varied use.

1. Avoid a bright static interface for long sessions
Move, hide or rotate content that remains fixed for hours. Typical examples include a permanent logo, a coding or video-editing timeline, a monitoring dashboard, a point-of-sale screen and a game’s heads-up display. You do not need to avoid every static element; the concern is continuous, high-contrast exposure in the same pixels over a prolonged period.
For a long editing or monitoring session, periodically switch applications, maximize a different window, scroll through changing content or take a normal break. Those actions vary which pixels display bright elements.

2. Use a comfortable brightness instead of maximum brightness
Maximum brightness is useful for a bright room or HDR highlights, but it is unnecessary for many indoor tasks. Set the display to a level that is clear and comfortable for the room. Avoid leaving a static image at the panel’s highest setting when a lower level is adequate.
This is not a recommendation to keep an OLED unusually dim. The objective is to avoid unnecessary high-brightness, high-contrast exposure while preserving readability.
3. Turn on automatic brightness
On macOS, open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays and enable the automatic-brightness option when it is offered. Connected displays can expose their own automatic-brightness control in the monitor’s on-screen menu instead. Labels vary by macOS release and by display model.

Automatic adjustment reduces sustained brightness when room conditions do not require it. It does not make static content harmless, so combine it with varied content and an idle timeout.
4. Make the display turn off promptly when idle
In macOS, open Apple menu > System Settings > Lock Screen and choose a shorter “Turn display off” interval for battery and power-adapter use where that fits your routine. The exact choices differ by macOS version.
For an external OLED monitor, configure its own sleep, standby or auto-power-off timer as well. A display that turns off while you are away cannot continue showing a static desktop.
5. Keep macOS and display firmware current
Install normal macOS updates and apply firmware updates supplied for an external OLED display. Vendors can deliver calibration changes and pixel-management protections through software or firmware. Updating does not reverse established burn-in, but it keeps the display on its supported protection behavior.
6. Do not disable the panel’s protection features
OLED products may dim a static area, shift the image slightly, run a compensation cycle or apply other pixel-management behavior. Those changes can be subtle and may look inconvenient, but defeating them removes part of the manufacturer’s protection strategy. Leave such features enabled unless the manufacturer’s instructions specifically say otherwise.

Should you worry about the menu bar, Dock or a fixed app window?
Not on the current MacBook Pro’s built-in Liquid Retina XDR display as an OLED-burn-in issue. The menu bar and Dock are ordinary parts of macOS use, and current specifications do not identify that panel as OLED.
If you use an OLED monitor with the MacBook Pro, the answer changes slightly: a menu bar or Dock that remains bright and fixed for many hours contributes to the same static-content exposure as any other interface element. You can reduce that exposure without disrupting normal work:
- Allow the display to sleep when you leave the desk.
- Use automatic brightness and avoid maximum brightness for routine desktop work.
- Use full-screen applications or move windows when practical so fixed elements do not occupy exactly the same pixels all day.
- Keep the monitor’s built-in dimming, pixel-shift and compensation functions enabled.
These steps reduce risk; they are not a guarantee against wear on an OLED panel.
A practical setup checklist
- Identify the panel. Check the MacBook Pro model’s technical specifications and the external monitor’s manual. If the built-in panel is listed as Liquid Retina XDR, OLED burn-in precautions are not relevant to that screen.
- Set brightness for the room. Use automatic brightness where available, then lower the level if a static workload does not require a brighter setting.
- Configure idle shutoff. Set the macOS display-off interval under System Settings > Lock Screen; also configure the external monitor’s standby timer.
- Plan for static workloads. For dashboards, timelines and other fixed interfaces, schedule ordinary breaks or switch to changing content rather than leaving the same view up continuously.
- Install updates. Keep macOS current and check the display manufacturer’s support instructions for firmware updates.
- Leave protection enabled. Do not turn off automatic dimming, pixel shifting or compensation cycles merely because they are visible.
What to do if you see a mark on the screen
Give a possible temporary after-image time to clear
Stop showing the suspected static content and use varied, ordinary-brightness content for several minutes. Apple’s OLED guidance specifically notes that image persistence can disappear after normal use. A mark that fades during this period is consistent with temporary persistence rather than established burn-in.
Check whether the mark follows the display
If you are using an external monitor, display a different source or open the monitor’s own on-screen menu. A mark that remains in the same physical location regardless of the computer input points toward the display; a mark that appears only in one application may be software content. Do not treat this simple check as a repair diagnosis, and avoid prolonged maximum-brightness test images.

Seek qualified service if it remains
If an artifact remains after normal varied use, or if you see additional hardware symptoms such as flicker, lines or areas that no longer illuminate correctly, contact Apple-certified repair or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Apple’s support information describes certified repairs as being performed by trusted experts using genuine Apple parts. Coverage depends on the applicable warranty or service agreement, so confirm those terms rather than assuming a particular repair will be free.
Products and “quick fixes” that should not be promised
A screen protector, cleaning kit, cooling pad, dark wallpaper or third-party utility is not established as a direct way to prevent OLED burn-in. A cleaning product can address dirt; it cannot change the wear history of OLED pixels. A dark wallpaper may reduce the amount of bright content in some situations, but it is not a burn-in guarantee and does not replace brightness control, idle shutoff or the display’s own protection features.
Likewise, do not assume that a current MacBook Pro has an Apple burn-in warranty or a dedicated burn-in-care program. Current specifications identify a Liquid Retina XDR built-in panel, and no separate OLED MacBook Pro service policy has been announced.

How to evaluate a future OLED MacBook Pro
If Apple announces an OLED MacBook Pro, verify the product page and service terms for the exact model rather than relying on rumors. The useful questions are practical:
- Panel construction: Is it a single-layer OLED or a tandem OLED design?
- Pixel management: Which automatic dimming, pixel-shift and compensation features are built in, and can the user disable them?
- Brightness behavior: How are sustained full-screen brightness and HDR peak brightness specified, and what controls are available?
- Idle behavior: How quickly can macOS turn the display off, and does the panel have its own standby timer?
- Service terms: What do the published warranty and repair documents say about display wear?
- Your workload: Will you show the same bright interface for most of the workday, or does your content change regularly?
Do not compare unannounced specifications as though they were confirmed. Wait for Apple’s technical specifications and support documentation before drawing conclusions about panel life, brightness or coverage.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- Current 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models use Liquid Retina XDR displays, not OLED.
- OLED burn-in is linked to prolonged, static, high-contrast content displayed at high brightness.
- Temporary image persistence can clear after a few minutes of normal varied use.
- For an external or future OLED panel, use automatic brightness, a prompt display-off timeout, current software and firmware, and varied content.
- A persistent artifact should be assessed by Apple-certified service rather than a promised accessory or software fix.
