The most reliable approach is layered protection: apply an EPA-registered skin repellent exactly as its label directs, cover skin with loose-fitting long sleeves and pants, use 0.5% permethrin-treated clothing or gear when appropriate, sleep under a properly fitted mosquito net when screens are unavailable, and remove standing water around your home. No single measure covers every situation, so match each layer to your exposure.

Choose protection for the way you will be exposed

Use the following framework before buying or applying anything. CDC guidance identifies these as separate protection roles rather than interchangeable products.

Exposure or problem Most useful layer What to verify
Exposed skin outdoors EPA-registered topical repellent Active ingredient, label-stated protection time, application limits, and reapplication directions
Arms and legs that can be covered Loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and long pants Fabric covers skin without being tight enough for mosquitoes to reach through it
Outdoor clothing, boots, tents, or backpacks Pretreated or user-treated permethrin gear Product label, 0.5% concentration for clothing and gear, treatment method, and wash-life
Sleeping outdoors or in an unscreened room Properly installed mosquito net Compact white rectangular design, 156 holes per square inch, sufficient length to tuck under the mattress, and whether it is treated
Mosquitoes entering or breeding at home Window and door screens, air conditioning, and weekly water-container maintenance Screen holes, operating air conditioning, and every container that can hold water

CDC explains that EPA-registered repellents have been evaluated for effectiveness and are proven safe and effective when used as directed. The registration number appears on the product label. CDC: Preventing Mosquito Bites

How to compare repellent choices

There is no single universally best brand or ingredient for every person. Compare the active ingredient, the formulation, the body areas permitted on the label, and the protection and reapplication directions stated for that particular product. A spray, lotion, or other formulation may have different instructions even when products use the same active ingredient. The label is the source for permitted ages, maximum frequency, and other precautions.

DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), para-menthane-diol (PMD), and 2-undecanone are the active ingredients CDC lists in EPA-registered repellents. Picaridin may be identified as KBR 3023 or icaridin outside the United States. Check for an EPA registration number rather than relying on a front-label claim such as “natural,” “plant-based,” or “all-day.”

Use a topical repellent for exposed skin, not as a substitute for clothing or a net. Covering clothing reduces the area that needs product, while a net protects a sleeping space. In high-exposure settings, combining layers is more dependable than applying extra repellent or using one product outside its labeled purpose.

Use an EPA-registered skin repellent correctly

Which active ingredients qualify

CDC recommends EPA-registered products containing one of these active ingredients: DEET, picaridin (also called KBR 3023 or icaridin outside the United States), IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), para-menthane-diol (PMD), or 2-undecanone. The product label—not the ingredient name alone—provides the protection duration and directions for that formulation.

Non-EPA-registered repellents, including some products marketed as natural, do not have an established effectiveness level in CDC’s guidance. A plant-derived ingredient in an EPA-registered product is not equivalent to an unregistered essential-oil product; use the registration status and label directions to make the distinction. CDC guidance on registered and non-registered repellents

Application sequence

  1. Read the entire product label before applying it. Check the permitted age, body areas, maximum frequency, and reapplication interval.
  2. Apply repellent only to exposed skin. Do not put it on skin covered by clothing.
  3. If you are also using sunscreen, apply sunscreen first and repellent second.
  4. Reapply only as the label directs. A longer outdoor stay does not justify applying more often than the stated limit.
  5. Wash treated skin after leaving the area where protection is needed, following the product label’s cleanup instructions.

CDC says EPA-registered repellents can be used by pregnant and breastfeeding women when used according to the label. CDC safety guidance

What the label can tell you

Use the label to decide whether a product fits a short walk, a full day outdoors, or repeated exposure over several days. It tells you how much to apply, where it may be applied, how often it may be reapplied, and whether there are age restrictions. Do not infer a longer protection period from a higher-sounding marketing claim, and do not layer two repellents unless both labels permit that use. If the label and general advice appear to differ, follow the current product label and consult a pharmacist or clinician for a personal safety question.

Protect children without common application mistakes

Use the product label as the controlling instruction for a child. CDC specifically advises that products containing OLE or PMD should not be used on children under 3 years old.

  • Never apply repellent to a child’s hands, eyes, mouth, cuts, or irritated skin.
  • For a child’s face, an adult should put repellent on their own hands first and then apply it carefully.
  • Do not allow a child to handle the repellent bottle or spray.
  • Cover a stroller or baby carrier with mosquito netting rather than applying repellent to the child’s hands or face.

These precautions and the age-specific OLE/PMD restriction are from CDC’s child guidance.

Dress children in loose-fitting long sleeves and pants where practical, then use repellent only on the exposed skin allowed by the label. Check the age range every time you switch products; an ingredient that is acceptable for one child or formulation may not be appropriate for a younger child. Keep the container secured after use and wash treated skin according to the label when the child comes indoors.

Use clothing as a physical barrier

Start with coverage and fit

Wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Covering skin reduces the area that needs topical repellent and provides a physical barrier, but clothing should not be so tight that mosquitoes can reach skin through the fabric.

Check practical gaps before going outside: wrists, ankles, the neck, and openings where a shirt meets pants can leave small areas exposed. Apply topical repellent only to those exposed areas, not beneath the clothing. Clothing is one layer; it does not remove the need for a labeled repellent on uncovered skin or a net while sleeping.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add permethrin-treated clothing or gear

Permethrin is an insecticide that kills or repels mosquitoes. You can buy clothing and gear pretreated or treat suitable items yourself. CDC lists boots, shirts, pants, socks, tents, and backpacks as examples.

  1. Use a product labeled for clothing and gear, not a skin product.
  2. For clothing and gear treatment, CDC specifies 0.5% permethrin.
  3. Apply or maintain the treatment exactly as the treatment label instructs, including any outdoor application, drying, and storage requirements stated there.
  4. Check the label for how long protection lasts and how washing affects it. CDC says treated items can provide protection after multiple washings, but the label determines the expected duration.
  5. Do not apply permethrin products directly to skin.

Permethrin treatment supplements, rather than replaces, covering clothing and repellent on exposed skin. Detailed concentration and handling information is available from CDC’s permethrin-treated clothing and gear guidance.

For a pretreated garment, retain the care instructions so you know how washing affects the treatment. For a product used at home, use only items and materials named on the treatment label and follow every drying, storage, and application instruction. Never improvise by spraying a clothing product onto arms, legs, hands, or other skin. If you cannot verify the concentration, intended use, or remaining wash-life, use untreated covering clothing and an EPA-registered skin repellent instead of guessing.

Sleep under a mosquito net when screens are unavailable

When a net is warranted

Use a mosquito net when sleeping outdoors or when the room does not have reliable screens. CDC recommends buying one before overseas travel if your accommodation may not provide screened sleeping space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to select a net

  • Choose a compact, white, rectangular net.
  • Look for 156 holes per square inch.
  • Make sure it is long enough to tuck securely under the mattress.
  • Consider a permethrin-treated net when the label and local rules allow it; CDC says treated nets provide more protection than untreated nets.
  • If the net is treated, follow its label to learn whether and how it may be washed.

Size matters as much as mesh. A net that cannot reach the mattress or floor as designed leaves an opening, while an oversized net can sag onto the sleeper. Confirm that the suspension points match the room, tent, or sleeping platform before bedtime. For travel, pack the net early and inspect it under good light for tears, weak seams, and missing ties.

Install and use it without creating gaps

  1. Inspect the net for tears and confirm that all suspension points are secure.
  2. Position it so the fabric surrounds the sleeping area and reaches the floor or mattress edge as designed.
  3. Tuck the lower edge under the mattress before sleeping.
  4. Keep the net closed whenever someone is inside.
  5. Do not sleep directly against the net. CDC warns that mosquitoes may bite through the holes when skin is pressed against the fabric.

Enter before closing the opening and check the perimeter once more. Keep luggage, bedding, and limbs from pushing mesh outward. If the net is treated, do not assume it can be washed like ordinary fabric; use the treatment label’s washing instructions. A treated net adds protection but still needs correct installation and intact mesh.

Specifications and use instructions are summarized in CDC’s mosquito-net guidance.

Reduce mosquitoes inside and around your home

Block entry

  • Install window and door screens.
  • Repair holes and gaps in existing screens.
  • Use air conditioning if it is available.

Make screen checks part of routine home maintenance, especially before warm-weather travel or when a room begins to feel more exposed. A small tear or an unlatched door can defeat an otherwise intact barrier. Air conditioning provides an alternative to open, unscreened windows when it is available.

Break the breeding cycle around the property

Once a week, inspect indoor and outdoor containers that can hold water. Empty and scrub them, turn them over, cover them, or discard them, as appropriate. CDC examples include tires, buckets, toys, pools, birdbaths, flowerpot saucers, and trash containers.

  1. Walk the entire property, including patios, garages, balconies, and storage areas.
  2. Empty standing water from containers that can be drained.
  3. Scrub residue from containers before refilling them; simply tipping out water can leave eggs attached to surfaces.
  4. Turn over items that are not needed or cover them so rain cannot refill them.
  5. Discard damaged containers that repeatedly collect water.

Include items that are easy to overlook, such as children’s toys, saucers beneath flowerpots, spare tires, and uncovered trash containers. Repeat the inspection after rain or when containers are moved. These weekly actions, together with screen repair and air conditioning, are part of CDC’s home-prevention recommendations: Preventing Mosquito Bites.

Build a layered plan for common situations

Backyard, park, or campsite during the day

  1. Put on loose-fitting long sleeves, pants, and socks.
  2. Apply an EPA-registered repellent to the exposed skin that remains.
  3. Add 0.5% permethrin-treated clothing or gear if you are using items labeled for treatment.
  4. Reapply topical repellent at the interval on its label, not on a self-chosen schedule.

Carry the repellent label or keep the container accessible so you can check the interval rather than guessing. If sunscreen is needed, put it on first. At the end of the outing, wash treated skin as directed.

Camping or sleeping outdoors

  1. Wear covering clothing and use labeled repellent on exposed skin before entering the sleeping area.
  2. Set up a net that can be tucked under the mattress or sleeping surface.
  3. Inspect for tears and keep the opening closed.
  4. Avoid pressing bare skin against the net.

Permethrin-treated boots, clothing, socks, tents, or backpacks can add a further layer when the treatment is labeled for that item. Treatment does not eliminate the need to close the net or protect exposed skin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hotel, guest room, or other unscreened accommodation

  1. Check whether windows and doors have intact screens.
  2. Use air conditioning where available.
  3. Keep a suitable mosquito net available if screened sleeping space cannot be confirmed.
  4. Use topical repellent on exposed skin according to its label when you are outside or in an area where mosquitoes are present.

Before travel, choose a compact net that meets the 156-hole-per-square-inch guidance and is long enough to tuck under the mattress. Pack any treated clothing or net with its care instructions and confirm that the treatment remains within its labeled service life.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Mistake Why it fails Correction
Applying repellent under a shirt or pants CDC directs users to apply it only to exposed skin. Cover skin with clothing and apply repellent only to areas that remain exposed.
Putting sunscreen on after repellent The recommended order is reversed. Apply sunscreen first, then repellent.
Using permethrin on skin Permethrin clothing and gear products are not skin repellents. Use only products labeled for skin on skin, and reserve permethrin products for labeled clothing or gear.
Assuming every “natural” repellent is proven Effectiveness of non-EPA-registered repellents is not known in CDC guidance. Choose an EPA-registered product and follow its label.
Letting a child apply repellent to their own face or hands Children can transfer repellent to eyes or mouth. An adult applies it to their own hands first, then to the child’s face; keep it off hands, eyes, mouth, cuts, and irritated skin.
Sleeping with skin pressed against a net Mosquitoes may bite through the mesh. Adjust the net or sleeping position so skin does not touch it.
Emptying only the most obvious water container Small items such as saucers and toys can still hold water. Perform a weekly property-wide inspection and empty, scrub, turn over, cover, or discard every water-holding item.
Reapplying whenever you feel uncertain Extra applications may exceed the product’s directions. Use the label’s interval and maximum frequency; combine clothing and physical barriers instead of guessing.
Assuming treated clothing lasts forever Washing and time can affect treatment life. Check the treatment label for duration and wash-life, and retreat or replace only as directed.
Using a net with an unsealed edge An opening lets mosquitoes enter the sleeping space. Choose a net long enough to tuck under the mattress and close every opening.

A practical pre-exposure checklist

  • Repellent is EPA-registered and its label is available.
  • The active ingredient and reapplication interval fit the planned exposure.
  • Sunscreen, if needed, will be applied before repellent.
  • Clothing is loose-fitting and covers arms and legs.
  • Permethrin-treated items are labeled for clothing or gear, use 0.5% treatment where applicable, and have a known wash-life from the label.
  • The mosquito net is intact, large enough to tuck under the mattress, and properly closed.
  • Children’s age restrictions and application precautions have been checked.
  • Home screens are intact, air conditioning is available where possible, and water-holding containers are handled weekly.

What to check when bites continue

  1. Confirm that the repellent is EPA-registered and that you followed its label, including the permitted body areas and reapplication interval.
  2. Look for uncovered skin at wrists, ankles, neck, and gaps between clothing.
  3. Check whether clothing or gear treatment has exceeded the label’s wash-life or was applied to an unsuitable material.
  4. Inspect a bed net for tears, openings, poor tucking, or contact between skin and mesh.
  5. Search again for overlooked water-holding items indoors and outdoors.
  6. Combine layers instead of relying on one product: covering clothing, labeled repellent on exposed skin, treated gear where suitable, and a net for sleep.

Persistent bites do not necessarily mean a product failed; exposed gaps, incorrect application, damaged mesh, or mosquitoes entering from an overlooked container can explain continued exposure. Recheck each layer separately, then use the combination that fits the setting.

Product labels and public-health guidance can change. Recheck the current label and the latest official recommendations for children, pregnancy, travel, or treated nets.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best mosquito repellent?

CDC does not identify one universally best brand. Choose an EPA-registered product containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, or 2-undecanone, then follow that product’s label for application and reapplication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I put permethrin on my skin?

No. Permethrin products described for clothing and gear should not be applied directly to skin. Use 0.5% permethrin only on clothing or gear specifically covered by the treatment label.

What should I wear to avoid mosquito bites?

Wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Socks and other suitable gear can be treated with a product labeled for clothing and gear. Apply topical repellent only to exposed skin.

When should I sleep under a mosquito net?

Use a net when sleeping outdoors or when a room lacks reliable screens. Choose a compact white rectangular net with 156 holes per square inch, tuck it under the mattress, keep it closed, and avoid pressing skin against the mesh.

Are natural mosquito repellents effective?

CDC says the effectiveness of non-EPA-registered repellents, including some products marketed as natural, is not known. A plant-derived ingredient in an EPA-registered product is different from an unregistered essential-oil product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I protect a baby or young child?

Follow the product label and do not use OLE- or PMD-containing products on children under 3. Keep repellent off a child’s hands, eyes, mouth, cuts, and irritated skin; an adult should apply it to their own hands before applying it to the child’s face. Cover strollers and carriers with mosquito netting.

Can I use sunscreen and mosquito repellent together?

Yes. Apply sunscreen first and repellent second, then reapply repellent only as its label directs.

How often should I remove standing water?

Inspect indoor and outdoor water-holding items weekly. Empty and scrub them, turn them over, cover them, or discard them as appropriate. Check tires, buckets, toys, pools, birdbaths, flowerpot saucers, and trash containers.

The Bottom Line

Preventing mosquito bites works best as a coordinated routine: use an EPA-registered repellent on exposed skin, wear loose covering clothing, reserve 0.5% permethrin for labeled clothing and gear, sleep under an intact and tucked mosquito net when screens are unavailable, and remove or manage water-holding containers every week. Follow each product label, especially for children, pregnancy, washing, and travel.
