The reliable way to stop loafers slipping is to correct the fit first, then consider a heel grip only for minor remaining movement or rubbing. Loafers have no laces to tighten, so the shoe’s length, last width, instep volume and heel-counter shape must hold your foot securely. If the shoe is fundamentally too long, too wide or too roomy over the instep, an adhesive liner may add friction temporarily but will not make the wrong shape fit correctly.

Why loafers slip at the heel

A loafer depends on the relationship between your foot and the shoe rather than on laces, buckles or straps. G.H.BASS describes the principle this way: “Because they don’t have laces, the fit relies on the shape of the shoe and your foot working together.” That is why a small difference in length or volume can show up as heel lift when you walk.

ECCO identifies three fit dimensions that commonly contribute to heel slippage:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Length: Extra space from the toes to the front of the shoe lets the foot move forward and back inside the loafer.
  • Instep volume: If the upper sits too high or leaves room over the top of the foot, the shoe may not hold the foot down securely.
  • Last width: A loafer that is too broad for your foot can allow side-to-side movement that becomes heel lift.

The heel counter also matters. South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust defines it as “The portion of the shoe that grasps the heel of the foot at the sides and back, preventing the heel from sliding up and down while walking.” A firm, correctly shaped counter helps stabilize the heel; a counter that has softened, collapsed or never matched your heel shape provides less support.

Some movement can therefore come from the foot, some from the shoe’s dimensions and some from wear. Identifying which of those is responsible prevents you from adding padding where the real solution is an exchange, a different shape or a professional adjustment.

Reassess the fit before adding anything

Start with the loafer as it is. Adding a pad immediately can hide a mismatch and create pressure elsewhere, especially across the toes or instep. Use the socks or hosiery you normally wear with the loafers, stand in both shoes and walk on a level surface.

Check the length

Notice whether your foot repeatedly slides forward before the heel lifts. If there is substantial unused space in front of the toes, the shoe may be too long. Do not automatically solve that by buying a smaller size: a shorter shoe can remove needed toe room while leaving the width or instep problem unchanged. The appropriate response is to reassess the complete fit and, where possible, try a different size or shape.

Check the instep

Look at the upper over the top of your foot while standing and walking. Excess room there can let the foot rise inside the shoe, producing heel lift even when the length appears reasonable. A loafer that feels secure at the heel but presses uncomfortably across the instep has the opposite problem; adding more material is unlikely to improve it.

Check the last width

Compare the shoe’s sidewalls with the widest part of your foot. If your foot shifts laterally or the upper bows away from the sides, the last may be too wide. Heel slipping caused by a broad last is a shape mismatch, not simply a missing strip of adhesive.

Inspect both feet and the counter

Feet are not always identical, so check each shoe separately. Also press and inspect the heel counter from inside and outside. If it has lost its original shape or feels unusually soft, the shoe may no longer be providing the side-and-back support it was designed to give. A grip can reduce contact with the lining, but it cannot restore a deformed counter.

Use a simple walking test

  1. Put on both loafers with your usual socks.
  2. Stand still, then walk several steps at your normal pace.
  3. Walk slowly and quickly enough to reveal whether the heel lift changes with stride.
  4. Notice whether the toes are forced forward, the sides feel loose, or the instep loses contact with the upper.
  5. Remove the shoes and compare any red areas, rubbing or pressure between the two feet.

Record the main symptom rather than trying to compensate for every sensation at once. The useful decision is whether the problem is a minor amount of movement in an otherwise suitable shoe or a mismatch in length, width, volume or counter shape.

Match the remedy to the fit problem

What you notice Likely fit question Most appropriate next step
Heel lifts and the foot also slides forward Is the loafer too long or too roomy overall? Try a different size or shape; do not rely on a pad to shorten the shoe.
Heel lifts while the sides feel loose Is the last wider than your foot? Look for a narrower or differently shaped last.
Heel lifts but the toe area is comfortable and the upper has space above the foot Is the instep volume too generous? Try a loafer with a closer instep fit; a temporary liner may be considered only if the looseness is minor.
One heel rubs after the counter has softened Has the counter lost its holding shape? Have the shoe assessed by a cobbler or replace it if the structure cannot be restored.
Only slight movement or rubbing remains after the dimensions look right Is the issue small enough for a friction aid? Consider an adhesive heel grip or liner and monitor comfort.

Using an adhesive heel grip or liner

Heel grips are most defensible when the loafer otherwise fits and the remaining issue is modest looseness or rubbing. ECCO and other footwear guidance describe them as a possible temporary aid, not a correction for an incorrectly sized or shaped shoe. They may reduce direct rubbing and occupy a small amount of excess space, but there is no guarantee that one will stop all slipping.

Choose the adjustment conservatively

Look for a grip or liner intended for placement at the back of the shoe. The goal is to make a small change at the heel, not to fill a large volume mismatch. If the shoe already presses your heel or instep, adding material can make the fit less comfortable. If the shoe is clearly too long or broad, return or exchange it instead of layering pads.

Compatibility with every loafer lining material has not been established. Adhesive strength and the possibility of residue can vary by lining, finish and product, so treat the first application as a test rather than a permanent repair.

Apply it step by step

  1. Clean and dry the area. Remove dust and oils from the inside of the heel where the grip will sit. Do not apply it to a damp or visibly dirty surface.
  2. Test the position. Before removing the backing, place the grip against the rear lining and check that it will not fold over the collar or sit under the heel edge.
  3. Apply without stretching. Peel the backing gradually and press the grip into the back of the shoe, keeping it aligned and smooth.
  4. Press the edges. Run a finger over the full surface so the adhesive contacts the lining without bubbles or loose corners.
  5. Try the shoe briefly. Walk indoors first. Check whether the heel feels more stable and whether the grip creates pressure, bunching or new rubbing.
  6. Stop if discomfort increases. A liner that causes pinching, blisters or toe crowding is not a successful adjustment, even if the heel moves less.

Because this is a temporary fit aid, inspect it periodically. If it peels, shifts or leaves residue, remove it rather than adding another layer over the top. If the loafer still slips substantially after one carefully positioned grip, reassess the shoe’s dimensions instead of continuing to add bulk.

When a heel grip is the wrong fix

The shoe is too long

A grip at the back does not change the distance between the toe and the front of the shoe. It can push the foot forward or reduce heel contact while leaving the underlying length problem in place. An exchange for a better-fitting size or model is more appropriate.

The last is too wide

If the foot moves from side to side, a narrow strip at the heel addresses only one point of contact. The upper may still fail to hold the midfoot, and extra padding can make the interior uneven. Seek a shape that follows the foot more closely.

The instep is substantially too roomy

Large unused space over the instep allows the foot to rise as you step. A thick insert may reduce that space but can also press on the top of the foot or alter how the shoe bends. Unless the looseness is minor, changing the loafer’s shape is the cleaner solution.

The heel counter is damaged

A counter that has softened or collapsed cannot reliably grasp the heel. Adhesive material may cover the symptom while the structural support continues to deteriorate. A cobbler can tell you whether the counter can be repaired; otherwise replacement is the realistic option.

Practical choices at a glance

Option Use it when Limit
Exchange for another size The length is clearly wrong and toe room is not balanced. A smaller size may create toe or width pressure, so reassess all dimensions.
Choose a different last or width The sides are loose or the foot shifts laterally. A rear pad cannot reshape the entire shoe.
Choose a closer instep shape There is excess room over the top of the foot. A tight instep is a separate problem; do not add material where the upper already presses.
Adhesive heel grip or liner The shoe is otherwise suitable and only minor movement or rubbing remains. Temporary aid; lining compatibility and a guaranteed result are not established.
Cobbler or shoe-fitting assessment The counter is damaged, the fit is unusual or home adjustment has failed. The professional must assess the individual shoe and foot; there is no universal modification.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Both loafers slip by a similar amount

Start with the common dimensions: length, last width and instep volume. A problem affecting both shoes is more likely to be a general fit mismatch than a single damaged counter. Do not keep adding pads until the interior feels crowded; try a better-fitting shape.

Only one loafer slips

Compare the two feet and inspect the slipping shoe’s counter and lining. A difference between feet can make one side need a small adjustment, while a visibly softened counter points to shoe wear. A temporary grip may be reasonable only after you confirm that the shoe is not structurally compromised.

Slipping starts after the shoes break in

Material can soften with wear, changing how firmly the counter holds the heel. Recheck the shoe rather than assuming your foot has changed. If the counter no longer retains its shape, an adhesive liner is unlikely to restore the original support.

The grip reduces movement but causes rubbing elsewhere

Remove or reposition it and walk again. The new pressure may indicate that the loafer has too little usable volume or that the grip is too thick or poorly aligned. Do not trade heel slipping for toe crowding, instep pressure or a new blister.

The heel still lifts substantially with a grip

Treat that result as evidence that the underlying fit needs attention. Revisit length, width and instep volume, then seek an exchange or professional assessment. Repeatedly stacking adhesive products is not a substitute for a suitable shoe shape.

How to prevent slipping when buying loafers

Evaluate the whole fit, not just the size number

Size labels do not describe every dimension. Compare how the loafer holds your heel, how much room exists over the instep and whether the last matches the width of your foot. Two loafers marked with the same size can secure the heel differently because their shapes differ.

Walk before deciding

Wear both shoes and walk long enough to reveal forward sliding, lateral movement and heel lift. A stationary fitting cannot show how the counter and upper behave during a stride. Pay attention to both feet, because one shoe may expose a mismatch that the other does not.

Keep toe room while correcting heel fit

Avoid sizing down solely to trap the heel. The correct fit balances secure heel contact with comfortable toe room and a width that does not compress the foot. If reducing length removes toe space or creates side pressure, the answer is a different last rather than a smaller label.

Check the heel counter

Look for a counter that feels supportive at the back and sides and retains its shape. The counter’s job is to limit up-and-down sliding; a flimsy or already distorted section gives you less to work with from the start.

When to stop experimenting

Stop home adjustments when the shoe remains unstable after a careful fit check, when an adhesive product creates new pressure, or when the counter is visibly damaged. A shoe-fitting retailer or cobbler can examine the loafer’s construction and your fit more directly than a universal pad recommendation can. Persistent rubbing, blisters or foot pain also warrants professional footwear or clinical advice rather than repeated trial and error.

There is no universal amount of heel movement that makes a loafer acceptable for every wearer. Construction, lining, counter shape and individual foot anatomy all affect the result. The practical standard is whether the shoe remains secure and comfortable through normal walking without forcing you to compensate elsewhere.

A concise decision checklist

  • Confirm that the loafer’s length leaves appropriate toe room without allowing the foot to slide forward.
  • Check whether the last width follows your foot rather than leaving side-to-side space.
  • Look for excess or insufficient room over the instep.
  • Inspect the heel counter for a firm, intact shape.
  • If the dimensions are wrong, exchange the shoe or choose another shape instead of adding bulk.
  • If only minor movement or rubbing remains, test one adhesive heel grip or liner carefully.
  • Walk indoors first and remove the adjustment if it causes pressure, bunching or new rubbing.
  • Seek a cobbler, shoe-fitting specialist or appropriate clinical advice when slipping persists or the shoe is damaged.
