To keep inventory accurate in real time, give one service authority over stock changes, make reservations explicit, and design every update to survive retries. Let other systems maintain read-optimized stock views, but check with the inventory authority or reserve stock there before making a consequential promise to a customer. Then reconcile incremental updates against snapshots and physical observations so missed changes can be found and corrected.
Choose one authority for stock changes
Define which service owns the authoritative quantity for each inventory scope, such as an item at a particular location, and which operations may change it. Those operations commonly include receiving, sale, reservation, release, shipment, return, transfer, and adjustment. The exact boundary depends on the business, but two systems should not independently decrement the same stock as if both were authoritative.
Other services can consume stock events and maintain local projections optimized for product pages, search, or reporting. Those views can be briefly stale: Microsoft’s event-sourcing guidance describes event-generated projections as eventually consistent. A displayed quantity is therefore not necessarily a safe basis for promising the last unit. At checkout, validate against the stock authority or request a reservation from it.

Decide when stock becomes reserved
“Available” is ambiguous unless the system defines which commitments it subtracts. A useful basic model distinguishes physical on-hand stock, reserved stock, and available stock; for a simple case, available equals on-hand minus reserved. If the business also tracks allocations or other commitments, define how those affect availability rather than hiding them in a single quantity.

Choose when a reservation begins according to the cost of temporarily holding stock and the risk of overselling. commercetools documents these inventory behaviors for order-management integrations:

These modes are described in the commercetools OMS integration guide. They illustrate trade-offs, not a universal best choice: compare when stock is held, how much temporary loss of availability is acceptable, and how the system handles abandoned reservations.
Give every hold a lifecycle
Represent a reservation as a stateful commitment with an explicit outcome: commit it when the sale proceeds, release it when the order or cart is cancelled, or expire it when its allowed lifetime ends. Make those transitions attributable to a reservation identity so retries or delayed messages cannot accidentally commit or release a different hold.

The Redis reservation tutorial demonstrates reservation transitions and an audit stream. Its lazy-expiration example restores stock only when a later read discovers that a hold has expired. That means a unit can remain unavailable after its nominal expiry until another read triggers cleanup; use that approach only if the delay is acceptable for the checkout flow.
Prevent oversells at the reservation decision
When several customers try to buy the final unit, checking a displayed quantity and then decrementing it in a separate, uncoordinated step can let more than one request proceed. Route the decision through the inventory authority, which must decide whether the hold can be made against the current stock and record that hold as one coordinated operation. If the requested quantity is no longer available, reject or revise the promise rather than relying on a read projection that may lag.
Keep the reservation result tied to the order or cart workflow that requested it. A later order failure needs a release path; a successful purchase needs a commit path. This separation lets the system distinguish stock temporarily held for a customer from stock that has actually been sold.

Make stock events safe to retry
Assume a consumer can receive the same event more than once. Microsoft’s event-sourcing guidance says, “Event handlers must be idempotent so processing a duplicate event doesn’t change the outcome.” Give each event a stable identity, or otherwise make the handler safe to apply again, and retain enough sequence or ordering information to investigate duplicates and out-of-order updates.
Choose event contents with replay behavior in mind. An absolute quantity update sets stock to a stated level; repeating it has a different effect from applying the same delta repeatedly. commercetools describes absolute updates as safer under at-least-once delivery. Deltas can still be useful, but consumers need deduplication or another mechanism that prevents a repeated decrement from being counted twice. Neither a deduplication table nor a single idempotent handler establishes exactly-once effects across every distributed-system boundary; document what is transactional and what delivery guarantees actually apply.
Reconcile gaps instead of hiding them
Incremental events keep other systems current, but a missed event can leave a projection wrong indefinitely if no repair path exists. Compare incremental updates with periodic full snapshots or counts, investigate discrepancies, and correct them through auditable stock movements that record the reason and source. A physical-count correction should remain distinguishable from a sale, receipt, or transfer.

The commercetools OMS integration guidance recommends periodic full snapshots alongside incremental inventory updates. The AWS RFID inventory guidance describes scan events and reconciliation between store and global inventory systems. Set snapshot frequency, discrepancy thresholds, and escalation paths according to stock value, sales velocity, and the team’s ability to investigate; the cited guidance does not establish universal values.

Digital events cannot correct an inaccurate physical count unless the operation captures what is actually on the shelf or in the warehouse. AWS documents an RFID-based pattern in which tagged items are read by RFID readers, passed through an ingestion hub and event-driven processing, and used to update global inventory and reconcile store inventory. The guidance also describes scanning and deduplication before reconciliation.

Validate the design with failure scenarios
Before relying on a stock view or reservation flow, exercise the cases that can make it diverge from reality. Verify that the authoritative owner rejects an unavailable reservation, duplicate events do not change the final result twice, and a missed incremental update is detectable through reconciliation. Also trace a reservation through commit, release, and expiry, including the delay behavior of the chosen expiry mechanism.
For each scenario, identify the source of truth, the event or state transition that should occur, how a retry behaves, and how an operator can audit or repair the result. Set latency and discrepancy targets from the checkout and operating requirements of the specific system; the cited sources do not prescribe universal thresholds.
