Use two independent safeguards: reject invalid states such as unknown and unavailable before an action, then require evidence that the reading is recent enough for the decision. A state guard prevents a disconnected sensor from being treated as a real value; a freshness rule prevents an old, plausible value from triggering an unsafe automation.

Why a sensor can look valid when it is not

Home Assistant automations evaluate the entity state that exists when a trigger fires. That state may be a real measurement, a startup placeholder, a connectivity failure, or a value that has not been updated for longer than your device normally needs. A temperature of 22 °C can be syntactically valid while representing a sensor that stopped reporting hours ago.

The reliable design is layered:

  1. Validity guard: explicitly reject unknown, unavailable, missing values and, for numeric decisions, non-numeric text.
  2. Freshness guard: compare the reading’s age with the device’s expected reporting interval or use an integration-provided last-seen signal.

Keep the guard immediately before the action it protects. Conditions are evaluated after a trigger fires, using the current state at that moment. They do not wait for a bad state to become good and then resume the same run.

What unknown and unavailable mean

State or value What it tells you How an automation should treat it
unavailable The entity cannot provide its state right now. Connectivity, setup, authentication, or integration failures are common causes. Never use it as a measurement. Block the action and investigate the source or enter a safe state.
unknown The state is not currently known. This can occur during startup or when an integration fetched data but is temporarily missing part of the response. Block decisions that require a known value.
none or an empty-like value A template or integration may expose a missing value in a form that is not a usable measurement. Reject it before conversion or comparison.
Numeric text outside the sensible range The value is technically numeric but may indicate a unit error, corrupt payload, or failed calibration. Add a range check appropriate to the sensor and the action.

Do not assume that a state recovery is proof of freshness. A state-change trigger can fire when an entity moves from unavailable or unknown back to a value. That transition only proves that Home Assistant received a state update; it does not prove that the value is a current physical measurement or suitable for the action.

Reject invalid states before using a sensor

Guard a non-numeric state

For an action that only needs a usable state, add a template condition that excludes invalid values:

condition:
  - condition: template
    value_template: >-
      {{ states('sensor.room_temperature') not in ['unknown', 'unavailable', 'none'] }}

Using states('sensor.room_temperature') is safer than directly reading states.sensor.room_temperature.state in templates that may run during startup. The function returns a predictable string even when the entity is not ready.

Validate before converting a number

Never convert first and assume the result is meaningful. Test the raw state, then perform a conversion that can fail safely:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
condition:
  - condition: template
    value_template: >-
      {% set value = states('sensor.room_temperature') %}
      {{ value not in ['unknown', 'unavailable', 'none']
         and (value | float(none)) is not none
         and (value | float) > 28 }}

Replace 28 with the threshold and unit that make sense for your installation. A conversion fallback prevents a text value from silently becoming zero and passing a low-temperature or low-level test. Add an upper or lower plausibility limit when a sensor can report physically impossible values.

Check every entity involved in a numeric condition

A numeric-state condition can fail when either the monitored entity or the entity supplying the threshold is unknown or unavailable. If your threshold comes from an input number or another sensor, validate both before diagnosing the automation as broken.

Define what “fresh” means for your device

Freshness is not a universal number. Start with the source’s normal reporting behavior:

  • A mains-powered environmental sensor that reports every 30 seconds might justify a timeout measured in minutes.
  • A battery contact sensor may report only when a door changes and can legitimately remain unchanged for days.
  • An energy meter may publish on a fixed interval, while a cloud integration may update in batches or pause during an API outage.

Set the timeout from the expected interval and the consequence of a false decision. A safety-related action should fail closed sooner than a convenience notification. Do not apply one arbitrary five-minute rule to every entity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Distinguish an unchanged value from no report

A sensor can send the same value repeatedly. Home Assistant’s state machine may leave last_changed unchanged because the value did not change, even though reports are arriving. Conversely, timestamp behavior depends on the integration. Therefore, “the temperature has not changed” is not the same as “the sensor has not communicated.”

Understand Home Assistant timestamps

last_changed records when the state value changed. last_updated records when the state object was updated. Neither necessarily represents the physical device’s last successful measurement. An attribute update, a deduplicated payload, or integration-specific processing can affect those times.

When available, prefer a device or integration last-seen/report timestamp whose meaning is documented by that integration. If no such signal exists, a timeout based on Home Assistant timestamps can still be useful, but document the assumption and verify it against the entity’s update behavior.

Use availability and expiry supplied by the integration

Upstream availability is usually better than guessing from a value. MQTT sensors can use availability topics and expiry behavior so a missing publication becomes visible as an unavailable entity. Other integrations expose their own connection or last-seen entities. Configure those features when supported, then keep the automation’s invalid-state guard as a second line of defense.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Place conditions where they actually protect the action

A trigger starts an automation run. Conditions are checked once after that trigger and before the action sequence. If the condition is false, the run stops; Home Assistant does not keep waiting and retry the action when the condition later becomes true.

This timing has several consequences:

  • If a motion trigger fires while a temperature sensor is unavailable, the run is blocked. A later temperature recovery does not revive that motion run.
  • If you need an action when both events have occurred, create triggers for both relevant changes and retain conditions that verify the other requirement.
  • Be deliberate with recovery triggers. A generic state-change trigger may react to a transition from unavailable to a value, while an entity-specific trigger may not.
  • A state trigger with a from value matches the specified source state. Use it when you intentionally want to handle recovery, not accidentally.

Require a condition to remain true with a template trigger

When an action should occur only after a valid condition persists, a template trigger can use a for duration:

trigger:
  - platform: template
    value_template: >-
      {% set value = states('sensor.room_temperature') %}
      {{ value not in ['unknown', 'unavailable', 'none']
         and (value | float(none)) is not none
         and (value | float) > 28 }}
    for: '00:05:00'

This prevents a brief, valid-looking spike from immediately starting the action. The timer is cleared when Home Assistant restarts or the automation is reloaded. That creates a restart window in which the five-minute requirement has not been satisfied again.

If the deadline must survive a restart, store the target time in an input_datetime helper and compare the current time with that helper in the automation. The helper becomes the persisted record of when the condition is allowed to complete instead of relying on an in-memory for timer.

Build a freshness check with a last-seen entity

Suppose an integration provides sensor.room_temperature_last_seen as a timestamp. The exact entity and timestamp format vary, so adapt the template to the integration’s documented output:

condition:
  - condition: template
    value_template: >-
      {% set reading = states('sensor.room_temperature') %}
      {% set seen = states('sensor.room_temperature_last_seen') %}
      {{ reading not in ['unknown', 'unavailable', 'none']
         and (reading | float(none)) is not none
         and seen not in ['unknown', 'unavailable', 'none']
         and (as_timestamp(now()) - as_timestamp(seen, default=0)) < 600
         and (reading | float) > 28 }}

The 600-second limit is only an example of a ten-minute freshness window. Set it from the device’s reporting cadence and risk tolerance. If the integration’s timestamp is not the time of a successful device report, do not treat this calculation as authoritative; use the integration’s own availability or last-seen semantics instead.

A complete guarded automation pattern

The following example turns on a fan when a room is too warm, but only when the reading is valid and its last-seen timestamp is less than ten minutes old. It also sends a notification instead of silently acting when the data is invalid:

alias: Cool room only with current temperature
mode: single
trigger:
  - platform: state
    entity_id: binary_sensor.room_occupied
    to: 'on'
condition:
  - condition: template
    value_template: >-
      {% set value = states('sensor.room_temperature') %}
      {% set seen = states('sensor.room_temperature_last_seen') %}
      {{ value not in ['unknown', 'unavailable', 'none']
         and (value | float(none)) is not none
         and seen not in ['unknown', 'unavailable', 'none']
         and (as_timestamp(now()) - as_timestamp(seen, default=0)) < 600 }}
  - condition: template
    value_template: >-
      {{ states('sensor.room_temperature') | float(none) is not none
         and states('sensor.room_temperature') | float > 28 }}
action:
  - service: fan.turn_on
    target:
      entity_id: fan.room
  - service: notify.mobile_app
    data:
      message: Room cooling started from a current temperature reading.

The notification action is optional. In a real installation, replace it with the notification service you use. If stale data is hazardous, choose a safe-state action or alert a person rather than merely skipping the run.

Choose the right response when data is bad

Situation Suitable response Reason
Convenience action, such as adjusting a light Skip the action and log or notify if the outage persists. A missed action is usually less harmful than acting on a false reading.
Heating, cooling, water or electrical control Move to a defined safe state and notify someone. Stale data can keep equipment running or stopped under the wrong conditions.
Security or access decision Fail closed unless an independent, current signal confirms the decision. Do not grant access based on an unavailable or expired sensor.
Monitoring automation Create a separate “sensor stale” alert. Separating the alert from the business action makes the failure visible.

Keep the stale-data alert independent from the action it protects. Otherwise the same unavailable sensor can prevent both the controlled action and the warning that would tell you why it did not run.

Diagnose an automation that still runs or never runs

The automation runs while the sensor is unavailable

  1. Open the automation’s trace and identify the exact run that performed the action.
  2. Check whether the guard is a condition in the same automation and appears before the action sequence.
  3. Confirm that the template reads the intended entity ID and explicitly excludes both unknown and unavailable.
  4. Look for another trigger or another automation controlling the same device.
  5. Check whether a numeric conversion fallback transformed invalid text into a number that passed your comparison.

The automation never runs after adding a guard

  1. Inspect the sensor state and the threshold entity at the time of the trigger.
  2. Verify units, decimal formatting and the accepted range.
  3. Check the last-seen timestamp’s actual format and timezone handling.
  4. Confirm that your timeout is longer than the device’s normal reporting interval, including expected sleep periods.
  5. Review the trigger: a condition does not create a new run when it later becomes true. Add a trigger for the recovery or valid-state transition if that is part of the intended behavior.

The template reports an error during startup

Use the states('entity_id') form and guard conversions with a fallback such as float(none). Startup can leave an entity unknown temporarily, and direct attribute access can make a template fail before the integration has populated the entity.

The freshness timer behaves differently after a restart

That is expected for a template trigger’s for duration: the wait is reset by a restart or automation reload. Use an input_datetime helper when the target time must persist, and design a startup path that re-evaluates the helper before allowing the action.

Test the failure paths deliberately

Do not test only the normal, connected case. In a maintenance window, exercise each branch:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Set the sensor to or simulate unavailable; verify that the protected action is blocked.
  • Test unknown during startup or integration reload.
  • Provide malformed or non-numeric payload text and confirm conversion fails safely.
  • Leave the value unchanged while reports continue; verify that your chosen timestamp does not falsely mark it stale.
  • Stop reports long enough to exceed the freshness limit; verify the stale alert or safe-state action.
  • Restart Home Assistant while a template for timer is active; confirm the behavior is acceptable.
  • Restore the device and observe whether recovery causes an intentional run or only clears the fault.

Record the expected result for each test in the automation’s comments or documentation. This prevents a future edit from turning a deliberate safety rule into an unexplained skipped run.

Design checklist

  • Does every sensor-dependent action reject unknown, unavailable and missing values?
  • Are numeric values validated before conversion and comparison?
  • Are threshold entities checked as well as the primary sensor?
  • Is the freshness signal a real device report, an integration update, or only a Home Assistant state-machine timestamp?
  • Does the timeout match the device’s reporting cadence and whether unchanged values are reported?
  • What should happen when data is invalid: skip, notify, or enter a safe state?
  • Could a restart reset a required for timer and create an unsafe window?
  • Does the integration support availability topics, expiry, or a last-seen entity that should be configured upstream?
  • Have recovery transitions been tested so an unavailable-to-value change cannot trigger an action unintentionally?

Bottom line

Protect Home Assistant automations with both state validity and age checks. Reject unknown, unavailable, missing and non-numeric values before making a decision; then use an integration-provided last-seen or availability signal whenever possible, or a carefully chosen timeout whose semantics you understand. Treat recovery as a new event that still needs validation, and design restart behavior explicitly when persistence matters.
