A Playwright fill() error does not prove that the editor stayed unchanged. In one reported CodeMirror 6 incident, text appeared to have been inserted before the call threw; retrying then produced a duplicated saved body. Check the editor and, when relevant, the saved result before inserting again. The report describes one case, not a universal CodeMirror 6 behavior or a confirmed root cause.

How can fill() throw after text has appeared?

Playwright’s locator documentation says fill() waits for actionability checks, focuses the element, fills it, and triggers an input event. That describes the documented action sequence, but it does not explain why a particular call might throw after text appears in an editor. The CodeMirror 6 account, published August 19, 2026, records the observed sequence: the call threw, text seemed to be present, and a retry led to duplicated saved content. The author’s explanation involving a mismatch in verification was a suspicion, not a demonstrated cause. Playwright Locator API Reported CodeMirror 6 incident

Keep the distinction clear: an action can report an error, while the application may already have processed some or all of its input. The report does not show that every failed fill changes the editor, nor that all CodeMirror 6 editors behave alike.

What should you do before retrying?

  1. Read the exception. Note what Playwright says failed rather than treating the error as evidence that nothing happened.
  2. Inspect the editor’s current content. Determine whether it is empty, partially filled, or already contains the intended text. Do not issue a second insertion until you know the state.
  3. Check persistence if saving is part of the test. Follow the application’s normal save flow, then inspect the result after reload. The visible editor state and the stored body are separate things to verify.
  4. Retry only from a known state. If you need to rerun the insertion, clear or otherwise establish the editor state first, and verify the result rather than assuming the second action replaces the first.

How to reproduce and diagnose the behavior

Use a clean, controlled case and record the exact setup. The reports do not provide a complete reproduction recipe, so these checks help separate an input problem from an application-save problem:

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Record the Playwright version, browser and browser version, CodeMirror version, and relevant editor configuration.
  • Capture the complete exception and whether text is present immediately after the action.
  • Compare the editor content immediately after input with the content after save and reload.
  • Run each input method separately from a clean editor state. Do not combine a failed fill() with a second insertion method before checking or resetting the content.
  • Repeat across the browser and version combinations your project supports; one browser’s result does not establish behavior in another.

When should you use fill() or keyboard input?

Choose the input path according to what the test is meant to exercise. Playwright documents pressSequentially() for cases that need fine-grained keyboard events. A CodeMirror forum participant reported that Playwright’s typing method worked in their CodeMirror 6 test after an older CodeMirror 5 textarea-based approach no longer applied. That is a historical individual report, not a guarantee that typing is required or best for every setup. Playwright Locator API: pressSequentially() CodeMirror forum discussion

What does the separate Firefox duplicate-fill report establish?

A July 2025 issue describes a different editable-widget case: with Playwright 1.54.1, a reporter saw duplicated text in Firefox when fill() targeted a contenteditable element whose beforeinput handler changed the text and cursor. The reporter said the problem did not appear in manual testing or in Chrome and Safari runs, and that keyboard input passed their test. This bounded report makes duplicate insertion a documented edge case under that setup; it does not identify the cause of the CodeMirror 6 incident. Playwright issue 36924

What is—and is not—known about the cause?

The available reports do not establish the root cause of the CodeMirror 6 exception, how often it occurs, or a fix that works for every editor installation. Playwright’s documented behavior explains what fill() is intended to do, while the CodeMirror account describes one observed failure and the Firefox issue concerns a separate beforeinput setup. Treat them as evidence to check state carefully, not as proof of one shared mechanism.
