You cannot make published WordPress content impossible to copy. The reliable approach is layered: state your ownership and reuse terms, reduce what automated tools can collect, protect files that should not be public, monitor for copies, harden the site against abuse, and use the host’s takedown process when infringement occurs.

WordPress.com Support puts the limitation plainly: “there is no way to fully guarantee the complete protection of your work” (reviewed August 12, 2026). The steps below focus on making casual copying less attractive, limiting automated extraction, finding violations quickly, and giving you usable evidence for enforcement.

1. Define what readers may reuse

Protection starts with an unambiguous rule. A visitor, syndicator, or hosting provider should be able to tell who owns the material and what permission, if any, you grant.

Publish a visible copyright notice

Put a concise notice in the footer, an About page, and—where practical—the page template used for articles and downloads. A notice does not create rights that you do not already have, but it removes uncertainty and gives a scraper less room to claim that your terms were invisible.

#1 Best Overall

A plain-language example is: © 2026. Original articles, photographs, illustrations, and downloads on this site may not be republished without written permission. Linking to the original page is welcome; brief quotations must include attribution and a link.

Adjust the wording to your actual policy. If you allow commercial reuse, translations, text-and-data mining, or full-feed syndication, say so. If you permit excerpts only, define a practical limit and require the canonical URL and author credit.

Use a Creative Commons license only when it fits

A Creative Commons license can make legitimate reuse easier, but it is a grant of permission, not a stronger lock. Select a license whose conditions match your publishing model: attribution is common; noncommercial, no-derivatives, and share-alike conditions add restrictions that some audiences may not understand. Apply the same license consistently to the material it covers and keep fully reserved-rights material clearly separate.

Do not label stock images, commissioned work, guest posts, fonts, or embedded media with a license you cannot grant. Record contributor permissions so a takedown request does not conflict with a contract.

2. Reduce what automated scrapers receive

Many scrapers start with feeds because a feed can expose an entire article without loading each page. If full-text syndication is not part of your distribution strategy, send summaries instead.

Set WordPress feeds to summaries

  1. Sign in to the WordPress administrator.
  2. Open Settings → Reading.
  3. Find For each post in a feed, include.
  4. Select Summary, save the change, and inspect an RSS reader or feed validator to confirm that only the excerpt is delivered.

WordPress core supports several feed types. Check the main RSS feed, Atom feeds, comment feeds, and any custom feeds generated by your theme, SEO tools, newsletter integrations, or membership plugins. A plugin can re-enable full content even after the core setting is changed.

Balance exposure against reader convenience

Full feeds are convenient for subscribers, podcast-style readers, and legitimate syndication partners. Summaries make automatic copying less efficient, but they also force readers to open the site for the rest of the article. Tell subscribers what changed and test your most-used feed readers before making the switch.

Feed summaries are a reduction in exposure, not a barrier. A determined scraper can request page HTML, use an authenticated feed, or reconstruct an article from multiple requests. Keep the setting aligned with your audience and distribution agreements rather than treating it as a complete solution.

3. Protect images, downloads, and other files

Text can be copied from a browser in seconds, while original images and paid files often need a different control set. Protect the asset itself and the path used to deliver it.

Watermark images when attribution must survive copying

Place a restrained watermark over an important part of an image, not only in a corner that can be cropped away. Keep an unwatermarked master for licensed customers and future edits. Watermarks deter casual reuse and preserve visible attribution; they do not prevent screenshots, tracing, or removal by an editor.

Keep restricted downloads out of public upload paths

For paid, private, or member-only files, use access-controlled delivery rather than a permanent public URL. A protected-download system can issue random-string private links, guard the upload directory, and expire or revoke links when necessary. The Prevent Direct Access listing also describes image hotlink prevention and optional copy/right-click controls. Configure permissions so a logged-out visitor cannot obtain the file by guessing a path or viewing the page source.

Test the complete delivery flow in a private browser window: open the page while logged out, copy the download URL, remove the session cookie, and try the URL again. A file that still downloads without authorization is public regardless of what the page says.

Control hotlinking without breaking legitimate use

Hotlink protection can stop another site from embedding your images and consuming your bandwidth. Permit your own domains, required CDN domains, and approved partners; otherwise, a blanket referrer rule can break email clients, RSS readers, mobile apps, or privacy-focused browsers. Review server logs after enabling the rule and provide a deliberate fallback image if your server supports one.

Treat copy and right-click blocking as a deterrent

JavaScript that disables selection, context menus, or keyboard shortcuts inconveniences legitimate readers and can interfere with accessibility tools. It does not stop someone from viewing page source, using developer tools, taking a screenshot, or requesting the content directly. If you use such a control, explain its purpose and test keyboard navigation, screen readers, mobile devices, and form fields. Never use it as the security boundary for a private file.

4. Find copied material early

Detection determines whether you can act while a copy is still receiving little traffic or search visibility. Combine inexpensive manual checks with alerts or monitoring appropriate to your publishing volume.

Search distinctive sentences

Choose a sentence of eight to twelve uncommon words from a new article, place it in quotation marks in a search engine, and inspect exact or near-exact matches. Repeat with the headline, an unusual subheading, and the author’s name. Search results can lag publication, so record the date you first checked and revisit important work.

Configure alerts

Create alerts for your author name, site name, recurring series titles, and distinctive phrases. Use separate alerts for high-value investigations so a flood of ordinary mentions does not hide a copy. Alerts are useful for discovery but are not a complete index; an unindexed page, a blocked crawler, or a translated copy may not appear.

Use plagiarism monitoring when volume justifies it

Copyscape offers one-off searching and paid monitoring. Manual searches cost time rather than a subscription and work well for a small site. Monitoring becomes more practical when you publish frequently or need a repeatable record of matches. Review every match yourself: quoted criticism, licensed syndication, public-domain material, and a short common phrase are not automatically infringement.

Preserve evidence before contacting anyone

  • Save the original page URL and the infringing URL.
  • Record publication and discovery timestamps in a consistent time zone.
  • Capture full-page screenshots showing the copied text, images, byline, and URL.
  • Export or save the page as a PDF or HTML file when possible.
  • Keep the original draft, media files, upload records, and first-publication metadata.
  • Note whether the copy is commercial, contains your branding, or links back to you.

Preserve the evidence before sending a warning. A copier can remove the page, alter the byline, or redirect the URL after receiving a complaint.

5. Harden WordPress against abuse

Security controls do not make published words uncopyable, but they reduce compromises, credential abuse, and automated traffic that can support scraping.

Maintain the software you actually use

  • Update WordPress core, the active theme, and every active plugin promptly after reviewing compatibility.
  • Delete unused plugins and themes instead of leaving them disabled.
  • Remove unnecessary administrator accounts and use strong, unique passwords with multi-factor authentication where available.
  • Limit file editing and other administrative capabilities to people who need them.
  • Back up the database and uploads on a schedule that matches your publishing rate, and verify that a restoration works.

An abandoned plugin can create an entry point even when the theft itself happens through a separate scraper. Keep a written inventory of active components so updates are not missed.

Add a firewall or WAF layer thoughtfully

A WordPress firewall plugin, a server-level web application firewall, or a reverse-proxy service can rate-limit abusive requests, block known attack patterns, and reduce load from crude crawlers. Start with logs and conservative limits. Overly aggressive rules can block search engines, accessibility tools, legitimate feed readers, or contributors working from a shared network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review firewall and server logs for repeated requests to article URLs, unusual user-agent patterns, rapid pagination, and attempts to fetch private paths. Rate limiting is a traffic-control measure; it is not permission to block every unfamiliar bot and it cannot stop a human who reads and retypes an article.

6. Respond when another site republishes your work

Use an escalation path that matches the evidence and the seriousness of the violation. A polite correction is appropriate for an accidental attribution error; a commercial mirror or repeated scraper may require a formal notice.

Confirm that the use is actually unauthorized

Check your own license, contributor agreements, syndication contracts, and any permission you granted by email. Compare the copied material with the original and document the substantial portions reused. A short quote with attribution, a link, commentary, or a licensed translation may be allowed even when it looks similar at first glance. Copyright exceptions differ by country, so obtain legal advice for a disputed or high-value case.

Ask the publisher for a correction when that is likely to work

Send a concise message identifying the original URL, the copied URL, the material at issue, and the remedy you want: removal, a specified attribution and link, or a license discussion. Keep the tone factual and give a reasonable response window. Do not threaten criminal penalties or claim ownership of material supplied by someone else.

Identify the hosting provider

Use the site’s contact page, registration information, DNS records, or a reputable hosting lookup to find the service responsible for the server or platform. The domain registrar, CDN, and host can be different organizations. Save the relevant abuse or copyright contact details and submit to the party that can actually remove the files.

Prepare a complete DMCA notice where applicable

In the United States, section 512 of the DMCA provides a notice-and-takedown system that lets a copyright owner inform an online service provider about allegedly infringing material. A complete notice normally includes:

  • Your name, physical or electronic signature, and reliable contact details.
  • Identification of the copyrighted work, with the original URL or a clear description.
  • The exact URL or location of each allegedly infringing item.
  • A good-faith statement that the use is not authorized by the owner, an agent, or law.
  • A statement that the information is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are authorized to act for the owner.
  • A request for removal or disabling access.

Follow the host’s published submission method and retain a copy of everything sent. The U.S. Copyright Office describes this process as a way for copyright owners to notify service providers so infringing material can be taken down; it is not a court judgment and does not decide every fair-use dispute.

Understand platform counter-notices

WordPress.com says it reviews a complete notice, removes content when the notice is valid, notifies the site owner, and permits a counter-notice. After a counter-notice, the copyright holder has 10 business days to initiate legal proceedings to keep the material offline on that service. That deadline is specific to the stated platform process; check the current procedure and obtain legal advice before relying on it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outside the United States, use the host’s equivalent copyright process and the law that applies to the parties and server. A local lawyer can advise on jurisdiction, evidence, and whether a court order is needed.

7. Match controls to your publishing model

Publishing situation Priorities Controls to add Main trade-off
Personal or low-volume blog Clear ownership and low-effort discovery Footer notice, summary feeds, quoted-sentence searches, alerts, current backups Manual monitoring takes time as the archive grows
High-volume editorial site Fast detection and repeatable evidence Summary feeds where syndication is unnecessary, alerts for titles and authors, monitoring service, evidence log, rate limiting Paid monitoring and review require ongoing budget and staff time
Membership or course site Prevent unauthorized file access Authenticated delivery, private or expiring links, upload-directory protection, watermarking, access tests More controls can create support requests when legitimate users lose access
Paid image or download library Preserve attribution and control bandwidth Watermarks, hotlink rules, protected delivery, link revocation, logs Watermarking affects the customer’s viewing experience and hotlink rules need exceptions

8. Understand the main trade-offs

Decision What you gain What you risk or must maintain
Disable selection and right-click Deters casual copying Accessibility and usability problems; determined users can bypass it
Use summary feeds Less full text available for automatic collection Readers and legitimate syndication partners must open the site
Add plugins or a WAF Better filtering, rate limiting, and abuse visibility Updates, compatibility checks, false positives, and log review
Watermark media Visible attribution survives many casual reposts Images are less clean and watermarks can be removed
Manual searches No subscription cost and direct control Labor-intensive and easy to miss as your archive expands
Paid monitoring More consistent coverage for frequent publishing Recurring cost and human review of false matches
Takedown notices Can remove an unauthorized copy from a compliant host Requires accurate evidence and may trigger a counter-notice or legal dispute

9. A maintenance routine that remains manageable

At publication

  • Confirm the article has the correct author, copyright policy, and license statement.
  • Decide whether the article’s feed should be full or summarized.
  • Store the original draft, images, and publication timestamp.
  • Apply a watermark or protected delivery to restricted media before sharing the URL.

Monthly

  • Search a few distinctive sentences from recent and high-value articles.
  • Review alerts and monitoring matches, then preserve evidence for actionable copies.
  • Inspect feed output and test a private download while logged out.
  • Review firewall logs for unusual scraping or login activity.

On every update cycle

  • Update WordPress and active plugins after checking compatibility.
  • Remove newly unused plugins, themes, accounts, and access rules.
  • Verify that backups complete and that a test restoration is possible.

10. Common problems and fixes

“I changed the feed setting, but the full article is still visible.”

Check whether you are viewing a cached feed, a different Atom or comment feed, or a custom feed generated by a plugin. Purge the relevant cache, inspect the raw feed, and review each feed-producing component.

“A protected download works for logged-out visitors.”

Test the direct file URL without cookies and from another browser or network. Then check upload-directory permissions, CDN caching, and old links issued before protection was enabled. Revoke exposed links and issue new private links.

“The copier removed the page after I contacted them.”

Keep your screenshots, saved files, timestamps, and correspondence. The disappearance does not erase the record; it simply changes what the host can verify. Preserve the original and any cached evidence before closing the matter.

“A firewall blocks legitimate readers.”

Reduce the rate limit, allow trusted crawlers and required partner services, and test accessibility tools and feed readers. Watch logs for several days before tightening rules again.

The practical objective is not an impossible promise of perfect protection. It is a documented ownership policy, fewer full-text copies available to automated collectors, properly controlled files, early discovery, and a defensible path from evidence to removal when someone republishes your work without permission.
