To reduce OLED burn-in risk, prevent bright, unchanging graphics from staying in the same place for long periods. Turn on pixel shift and logo-dimming features, use a screen saver or switch the display off whenever you pause, moderate OLED brightness for long sessions, and let the manufacturer’s automatic panel-care cycle finish while the device remains connected to power when required.

These steps reduce risk; they cannot guarantee that a panel will never develop burn-in. Menu names, timers and maintenance cycles vary by model, software version and region.

Burn-in and temporary image retention are different problems

Burn-in is a persistent change that remains visible when other content is displayed. A channel logo, game health bar or desktop toolbar may remain outlined in the same position even after you change inputs. LG describes prolonged static content as a cause of persistent burn-in.

Temporary image retention is a short-lived afterimage. It can fade after displaying varied content or after the panel completes its normal compensation cycle. A faint remnant immediately after changing scenes is not proof that the panel has permanent damage.

Samsung 27" Odyssey OLED G6 (G61SH) QD-OLED, QHD (1440P) Gaming Monitor
  • Samsung’s 27” Odyssey OLED G6 Gaming Monitor is engineered for perfection with a QD-OLED Display featuring QHD resolution made to deliver high brightness and a wide range of colors for gameplay
  • OLED Safeguard technology supports performance by actively helping to prevent burn-in with a thermal modulation system
  • Glare Free Technology keeps screen clear of reflection from external light sources
  • The Pantone Validated screen accurately reproduces 2100+ lifelike colors and 110+ skin tone shades
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadows for added depth and more realistic scenes

Because the two conditions can look similar at first, do not jump straight to a manual refresh. Check the signal and run the model’s picture-test procedure before deciding that the panel has burn-in.

What creates the practical risk

The concern is not one frozen frame for a few seconds. It is repeated exposure to high-contrast, fixed graphics that occupy the same pixels while the rest of the image changes.

Television examples

  • Broadcast-station logos and persistent sports scores.
  • News tickers and other fixed lower-third graphics.
  • A paused movie, streaming frame or console screen left on while you are away.
  • Set-top-box, game-console or streaming-device menus that never time out.
  • Constant black bars or other fixed borders in a format that does not match the panel.

Monitor examples

  • Operating-system taskbars, dock icons and fixed window chrome.
  • A game HUD, minimap, ammunition counter or scoreboard that stays in one place.
  • A productivity application’s toolbars or side panels left open for long sessions.
  • A no-input screen or paused video that remains displayed instead of entering a saver state.

The practical rule is simple: when the same bright element is always in the same location, change the content, hide the element, start a screen saver or turn the display off.

Configure the protection features on the display

Feature names differ, but the following controls address the main causes of uneven wear. Open the picture, general, system or panel-care settings on your exact model and verify each one rather than assuming it exists.

1. Turn on pixel shift

Pixel Shift, Screen Shift or a similar function moves the picture by a small amount at intervals. The movement spreads a fixed graphic over neighboring pixels instead of driving exactly the same pixels continuously.

Samsung’s official monitor guidance says, “The Pixel Shift setting is turned on by default, but make sure it is set to On.” Check it after a factory reset, firmware update or change of picture mode. Pixel shift does not remove a logo or HUD, so it should be combined with sensible viewing habits.

2. Enable logo-brightness reduction

Some televisions and monitors detect a stationary logo and reduce its luminance. Samsung describes Logo Detection as reducing brightness in the affected logo area and also provides a logo-brightness setting; its guidance says a High setting dims logos further. LG manuals use the label Adjust Logo Brightness and recommend High where the option is available.

Automatic detection can misclassify content, and not every source exposes the same controls. Treat the feature as an additional safeguard, not permission to leave a channel or game HUD on indefinitely.

3. Set a screen saver and automatic shutoff

Use the shortest practical inactivity timer for your viewing pattern. A saver should appear when a computer is idle, a video is paused or the display has no signal. When you step away, starting it yourself or turning the panel off is more reliable than waiting for a source application to cooperate.

LG USA support describes a television saver that activates after about two minutes when it detects no activity on a no-signal screen or paused video. Samsung describes a two-minute trigger for specified still-image or no-input situations, with exceptions depending on the source and app. Those are device-specific behaviors, not a universal OLED-safe timer; a streaming app or external box may prevent the display from detecting that it is idle.

4. Choose a less aggressive brightness mode for long sessions

High OLED pixel brightness makes static graphics more stressful over time. For an extended news channel, office session or game, consider Eco mode or a lower OLED Pixel Brightness setting if your model provides it. LG’s model guidance recommends those adjustments for long viewing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No universal “safe” brightness number has been established. Lowering brightness is a risk-reduction choice that must still leave text and shadow detail usable in your room. It does not make a fixed image harmless.

5. Close external menus and use sensible aspect-ratio settings

Exit a console’s setup screen, a receiver’s configuration overlay or a monitor’s on-screen menu when you finish using it. If a source offers an aspect-ratio mode that removes persistent bars without stretching ordinary content unacceptably, use it; do not distort every program merely to eliminate a border. The useful setting depends on the source, content and panel.

Adopt low-effort habits that prevent most exposure

When watching television

  1. Pause only when you are still in the room. If you leave, press the screen-saver button, switch to varied content or turn the television off.
  2. Do not leave a paused game, news channel or sports score running while taking a break.
  3. Close the home, input or device-setup screen after changing a setting.
  4. For long background viewing, use a lower-brightness picture mode and vary the content periodically.
  5. Keep the set connected to power after shutdown when its instructions say panel care runs while the television is off.

When using a computer monitor

  1. Configure the operating system to start a screen saver, sleep the display or turn it off during inactivity.
  2. Hide or auto-hide a fixed taskbar and dock when that option suits your workflow.
  3. Do not leave a game paused on its HUD or an application’s menu open while away from the desk.
  4. Close monitor, console and computer setup overlays as soon as configuration is complete.
  5. For repetitive office work, vary window layouts or use a less intense brightness setting during long sessions.

These habits matter even when Pixel Shift and logo dimming are enabled. Protective automation can fail when an app continually reports activity, a source sends a black frame instead of no signal, or a particular model lacks the feature.

Let automatic panel-care cycles complete

OLED displays perform compensation or cleaning routines that balance pixel output. They are maintenance, not a replacement for avoiding prolonged static images. Start no manual cycle unless the model’s instructions specifically call for it.

LG television behavior

LG USA support describes an automatic cleaning cycle after cumulative use and a longer calibration after 2,000 cumulative hours. The cited support material gives about four cumulative hours as an interval for the shorter automatic pixel-cleaning behavior and about one hour for the longer calibration after the 2,000-hour threshold. These figures describe the LG television behavior in that support guidance; they are not a schedule for every OLED television.

After turning the set off, leave it connected to power if the instructions require that for the cycle. Do not turn the television back on while an active cleaning or calibration process is running. A standby indicator or a message in the manual may be the only sign that the process is underway.

Samsung OLED monitor behavior

Samsung’s US monitor guidance says Screen Optimization starts after at least four cumulative hours when the monitor is turned off and estimates roughly 10–15 minutes for the operation. A separately initiated Pixel Refresh can take more than an hour and is not available on every monitor model.

Do not treat the shorter Screen Optimization interval as a universal four-hour allowance for static content. It is a maintenance trigger measured in cumulative operating time. If your model offers a manual Pixel Refresh, follow its on-screen instructions, allow the full operation to finish and avoid repeatedly starting it as a preventive ritual.

How to interpret the timings

Manufacturer or device guidance Stated timing What the number means
LG TV support, 2026 About 2 minutes A cited screen-saver trigger for a no-signal screen or paused video with no user activity; it is not a burn-in probability or safe static-image duration.
LG TV support, 2026 About 4 cumulative hours A cited automatic pixel-cleaning interval for the supported LG behavior; it should not be generalized to other brands or models.
LG TV support, 2026 2,000 cumulative hours; about 1 hour A cited threshold and approximate duration for a longer automatic calibration after the TV is turned off.
Samsung US OLED monitor guidance, accessed 2026 At least 4 cumulative hours; about 10–15 minutes The stated Screen Optimization trigger and estimated duration for covered monitors when switched off.
Samsung US OLED monitor guidance, accessed 2026 More than 1 hour The approximate duration of a separately initiated Pixel Refresh; availability varies by monitor model.

None of these values establishes a universal safe period for a static picture. The appropriate interval, menu path and cycle duration belong to the exact model and region.

TV and monitor guidance is not interchangeable

Consideration OLED TV OLED monitor
Typical fixed elements Channel logos, tickers, sports scores, paused video and external-device menus. Taskbars, application chrome, game HUDs, desktop windows and monitor menus.
Useful first settings Screen saver, Pixel Shift, logo-brightness reduction and a lower OLED-brightness mode. Pixel Shift, screen saver or display sleep, logo detection where offered and a moderate brightness setting.
Idle detection May depend on no signal or a paused source; a streaming app can behave differently. May depend on the computer’s sleep policy or the monitor’s own no-input logic.
Panel-care differences LG and other TV makers may schedule automatic cleaning after cumulative use and a longer calibration at a separate threshold. Samsung’s covered monitors distinguish automatic Screen Optimization from a model-dependent manual Pixel Refresh.
What to verify WebOS or firmware generation, regional menu labels and the manual’s shutdown requirements. Exact model number, whether Pixel Refresh exists, the required cumulative time and whether the monitor must remain off.

Model-year differences can be substantial even within one brand. LG lists different paths across webOS generations, and Samsung states that Pixel Refresh is not available on every monitor model. Use the manual for the exact display rather than copying a path or interval from another product.

What not to do

  • Do not assume a two-minute saver means two minutes is safe for every still image. The cited timers apply only to specified device and source conditions.
  • Do not run a long manual refresh routinely. It is intended for model-directed maintenance or troubleshooting, not as a daily cure for leaving static graphics on-screen.
  • Do not interrupt an active cycle. Turning the panel back on can prevent the intended compensation process from completing.
  • Do not generalize one manufacturer’s schedule. LG TV intervals and Samsung monitor intervals describe different products and processes.
  • Do not stretch every image to eliminate bars. Use an appropriate aspect-ratio option only when it preserves acceptable picture geometry.
  • Do not conclude that a faint afterimage is permanent burn-in without testing. Retention can fade, while burn-in remains visible with unrelated content.

If you notice a mark on the screen

1. Change the content

Display varied material, switch inputs and check whether the mark changes or fades. A mark that appears only immediately after a static scene may be temporary retention.

2. Check the source and connections

Inspect the cable, source device and application. A logo or overlay generated by a receiver, console or computer can be mistaken for a panel defect. LG troubleshooting guidance includes checking sources and external devices before concluding that the display itself has burn-in.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Run the model’s picture test

Use the television or monitor’s built-in picture-test pattern, following the exact on-screen path in its manual. If the mark is absent from the internal test but present on one input, investigate that source. If it appears in the test with unrelated content, record the model and firmware information before contacting support.

4. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions

Only use a manual pixel-cleaning or refresh command when the model’s support instructions recommend it for the symptom. Read the estimated duration, make sure the display has stable power and do not interrupt the process. Some routines run for more than an hour.

5. Escalate a persistent result

If the mark remains across inputs and the picture test, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider with the model number, purchase region, operating hours if available and photographs showing the mark on different content. Do not claim that every persistent mark is covered by the same warranty policy; coverage depends on the model, region and terms.

A practical prevention checklist

  • Pixel Shift or Screen Shift is enabled.
  • Logo detection or logo-brightness reduction is enabled when available.
  • The screen saver, display sleep or automatic shutoff is configured for idle periods.
  • OLED pixel brightness is reduced when a long, repetitive session makes that practical.
  • Paused games, menus, taskbars and tickers are not left on while you are away.
  • External setup screens are closed after use.
  • Aspect-ratio changes are used only when they do not unacceptably distort normal content.
  • The display remains connected to power when the manual requires standby power for panel care.
  • Automatic cleaning and calibration cycles are allowed to finish undisturbed.
  • The exact model manual is consulted before starting any manual refresh.

No independent statistic establishes a universal burn-in probability or a universal safe duration for static content. The most defensible approach is therefore consistent: reduce repeated fixed graphics, use the protections your model actually provides and let its maintenance routines run as designed.
