A reliable unattended sign needs more than a browser’s full-screen button. Configure an operating-system kiosk or dedicated signage session, set the device and display power policies separately, apply the browser policies your platform supports, and then observe the actual player and screen through a complete idle cycle. Kiosk mode limits what users can reach; it does not automatically prove that every notification is blocked or that an external monitor will never enter its own power-saving state.

The procedure below covers Windows with Microsoft Edge, managed ChromeOS kiosk devices, and IGEL OS. Select the path that matches your existing hardware and management system, then validate media playback, authentication, recovery, updates, and physical display behavior before deploying unattended.

Think of interruption prevention as four separate layers

Most signage failures happen because one layer is configured while another is ignored. Treat these as separate controls:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Session lock-down: An OS kiosk or signage session launches one app or URL full-screen and hides ordinary desktop controls.
  2. Browser behavior: Notification prompts, permission requests, pop-up windows, redirects, and URL access are governed by browser or management policies. The available controls differ by platform and browser version.
  3. Device power: Idle actions, screen dimming, screen-off timers, sleep, and battery behavior belong to the operating system or device-management policy, not merely to the browser window.
  4. Display power: An attached monitor or television can apply its own energy-saving timer even when the player computer remains awake.

A deployment is ready only when all four layers have an intentional setting and a documented recovery method.

Collect these details before changing settings

Write down the following for each player. This prevents a policy intended for one model or operating system from being copied blindly to another.

  • Player operating system and edition, including whether Windows is Pro, Enterprise, Education, or IoT.
  • Browser name and version, signage application, launch URL, and whether the page needs sign-in, touch, keyboard, sound, or media autoplay.
  • Management state: locally configured, domain-managed, enrolled in a cloud console, or controlled by a dedicated signage platform.
  • Power source. A ChromeOS device on AC can have different policy behavior from one operating on a battery; external players may also be connected to switched outlets.
  • Display type: built-in panel, HDMI monitor, commercial television, or video wall controller. Record the display’s own sleep, eco, and input-loss settings.
  • Administrator exit and maintenance procedure, including how updates, reboots, and emergency access will be performed without leaving a public desktop visible.

Windows: build a Microsoft Edge single-app kiosk

Microsoft describes Assigned Access as a Windows feature for configuring a device as a kiosk or restricted user experience. Its kiosk experience can run a single UWP app or Microsoft Edge full-screen, allow only that app, and automatically restart the kiosk app if it closes. Microsoft lists interactive digital signage as a supported use case in its Assigned Access documentation.

Check the edition and prerequisites

Assigned Access is supported on Windows Pro, Enterprise and Enterprise LTSC, Education, and IoT Enterprise and IoT Enterprise LTSC. Setup requires User Account Control (UAC) to be enabled and an administrator signed in at the device console. Microsoft says the configuration is not supported over Remote Desktop, so perform the initial setup locally or through a management method that does not rely on an RDP session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure the kiosk from Settings

  1. Sign in locally with an administrator account and open the Windows Settings area for Accounts and Other users (the exact navigation label can vary by Windows release).
  2. Open the Assigned Access or kiosk configuration page and choose the option to set up a single-app kiosk.
  3. Create or select the restricted kiosk account that will be used at sign-in.
  4. Choose Microsoft Edge as the kiosk app.
  5. Select the full-screen digital signage experience rather than public browsing when the device should show one controlled page without normal browsing controls.
  6. Enter the complete signage launch URL and save the assignment.
  7. Restart the device and confirm that the kiosk account launches Edge full-screen and that closing the app causes the kiosk experience to relaunch it.

Public-browsing kiosk is a different Edge experience. It can expose a browser-oriented session and lets an administrator specify an inactivity restart interval. Use that mode only when the sign needs controlled browsing rather than a fixed digital-signage page.

Use the Edge kiosk command when you need a repeatable launch

For a shortcut, scheduled task, or management script, Microsoft documents this full-screen launch pattern:

msedge.exe --kiosk https://www.contoso.com --edge-kiosk-type=fullscreen

Replace the example address with your own signage URL. A command-line launch is useful for controlled startup, but it does not replace Assigned Access, account restrictions, device power configuration, or display setup.

Apply URL and browser policies deliberately

Microsoft documents URL allowlist and blocklist policies for both Edge signage and public-browsing kiosk types. Use an allowlist when the page must reach only its content host, authentication endpoint, media CDN, and other explicitly required services. Block unnecessary destinations that could create redirects or expose navigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Edge kiosk mode is not a complete security or interruption-proofing boundary. Microsoft warns that common open and save dialogs are not automatically locked down in Kiosk Mode. Additional browser policies can be applied, but Microsoft advises testing them because an incompatible policy can change kiosk behavior. The Microsoft Edge kiosk documentation should be your version-specific reference for supported policy names and kiosk types.

Handle Windows power and notifications as a separate workstream

The reviewed Microsoft kiosk guidance establishes full-screen and relaunch behavior, but it does not provide one universal recipe for Windows sleep, monitor power, every operating-system notification, or every website pop-up. Configure those controls through the Windows edition, device-management policies, Edge policies, and the display’s own menu that apply to your deployment.

After applying the policies, test the real player past the longest idle threshold. Confirm that the screen does not dim or turn off, that no toast notification covers the page, and that a reconnect or reboot returns directly to the signage URL. Do not claim success from a kiosk screenshot alone.

ChromeOS: use a managed kiosk app and explicit power policies

Google defines ChromeOS kiosk mode as an administrator-set, locked full-screen mode that runs one application without requiring a device-user login. Google identifies business and enterprise digital signage as a kiosk use. A managed device can receive applications, operating-system updates, policies, and remote administration through the Google Admin console. Google’s developer guidance also states that a management license is needed for kiosk setup and management; verify the licensing and enrollment requirements for your organization before purchasing a player. See Google’s ChromeOS kiosk-app documentation.

Confirm the app and enrollment model

  • Enroll the device in the organization that will manage it; an unmanaged personal Chromebook is not equivalent to a managed signage player.
  • Choose the kiosk application or web experience that supports your page’s media, authentication, orientation, and input needs.
  • Confirm that the management license, app assignment, and remote-support process are available before the device is installed in a difficult-to-reach location.
  • Decide whether the device operates on AC continuously or must also behave correctly on battery. Google documents separate AC and battery policy contexts.

Set the documented kiosk power values

In the managed ChromeOS device policies, Google documents these settings for keeping a kiosk device active:

Policy Value Purpose
Action on idle Do nothing Prevents the idle action from putting the device into a configured sleep or sign-out behavior.
Screen dim timeout 0 minutes Disables the device’s automatic dimming timer.
Screen off timeout 0 minutes Disables the device’s automatic screen-off timer.
Allow App to Manage Power Enable when the kiosk app requires it Lets the assigned app participate in power management where the policy and app support that control.

Apply the values for the power source used in the installation, not only for a test profile on AC. The policy reference is Google Admin Help’s ChromeOS device-policy documentation.

Separate kiosk lock-down from notification policy

ChromeOS kiosk mode hides normal user access, but Google’s kiosk and power pages do not establish that every Chrome notification, website permission prompt, pop-up, or app overlay is automatically absent. Use the browser and ChromeOS management policies available to your enrolled version, then test the exact signage application. If the page requests notification permission, opens a payment or authentication window, or depends on a new tab, verify that the kiosk app handles that flow before installation.

IGEL OS: configure a signage session and the physical display

IGEL documents a digital-signage session that can load a webpage or application URL in an embedded Chromium-based browser, or display content through a configured external application such as Chromium or Firefox. Its kiosk mode disables the screensaver and notifications among other controls. The procedure and available fields are described in the IGEL Knowledge Base guide for configuring digital signage on IGEL OS.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Choose the session type and URL

  1. Create the digital-signage session in the IGEL configuration environment.
  2. Select the embedded browser or the external browser/application that is compatible with your content.
  3. Enter the signage URL and set the session to launch automatically for the signage user.
  4. Enable the kiosk behavior when the installation requires screensaver and notification suppression.
  5. Test media playback, certificate handling, authentication, and recovery with the exact browser engine selected.

Disable power saving at both levels

IGEL specifically cautions administrators to verify that power-saving mode is deactivated for the display device and to check the operating system’s display power-management and brightness-reduction settings. Disabling the IGEL screensaver does not establish that an HDMI monitor or television has disabled its own energy-saving timer. Open the display’s physical or remote-control menu and turn off sleep, eco, and automatic brightness features that would interrupt the content.

Plan for the operational trade-offs

IGEL’s kiosk mode can disable touchscreen or touchpad input, HID input, the mouse pointer, taskbar, notifications, and automatic updates. Those restrictions are useful for a public sign but unsuitable when staff must touch the screen, use a keyboard, see a pointer, or receive update prompts. Define an administrator exit and maintenance process before enabling the mode; IGEL also documents a remote command for resetting kiosk mode, which should be incorporated into your recovery runbook.

Control notifications, pop-ups, and permission prompts by category

“Pop-up” can mean several different mechanisms, and each may require a different control:

  • Operating-system toast: messages from Windows, ChromeOS, or a management agent can cover the signage surface even when the browser is full-screen.
  • Browser notification: a site or extension requests permission to show alerts outside the page.
  • In-page modal: the signage site itself displays a consent, renewal, cookie, authentication, or error dialog.
  • New-window or new-tab pop-up: a script opens another browsing context, sometimes for login or payment.
  • Browser or app update prompt: an update may restart the session or expose a maintenance screen.

Start with the least disruptive control: make the signage application and its required service domains explicit, block unneeded destinations, and remove extensions or apps that can generate visible overlays. Then verify that legitimate sign-in, media, and renewal flows still work. No source in this guide supports a universal cross-platform switch that blocks every category.

  1. Reboot the player from a cold start and record the time until the signage page is visible.
  2. Confirm that the expected kiosk account or signage session launches without exposing a desktop, taskbar, browser tabs, or sign-in screen.
  3. Leave the system untouched beyond the configured idle, dim, and screen-off thresholds. Observe both the player and the attached display.

  5. Watch for operating-system toasts, browser permission prompts, app overlays, unexpected tabs, and display input-loss messages.
  6. Disconnect and reconnect the network if that is a realistic failure mode. Confirm that the page shows a controlled offline state and recovers when connectivity returns.
  7. Close or crash the signage application where your platform permits it. Verify the documented kiosk relaunch behavior rather than assuming it.
  8. Restart the device during a maintenance window and confirm that it returns to the sign without manual clicks.
  9. Test the administrator exit, remote-support path, update process, and emergency rollback. Record who can use each method and where credentials are stored.

This is an operational validation plan, not a guarantee of results for every hardware, operating-system, browser, site, or display combination. Repeat it after major browser, OS, signage-app, policy, or display-firmware changes.

Choose a platform using the constraints that affect uptime

Decision axis Windows with Edge Assigned Access Managed ChromeOS kiosk IGEL OS signage
Existing fleet and edition Requires a supported Windows edition: Pro, Enterprise/Enterprise LTSC, Education, or IoT Enterprise/IoT Enterprise LTSC. Requires managed ChromeOS enrollment and the kiosk-management licensing model documented by Google. Requires compatible IGEL hardware, OS configuration, and the selected browser or external application.
Session model Single-app full-screen Edge kiosk with relaunch behavior; public browsing is a separate option. Administrator-set, locked full-screen application without a device-user login. Configured signage session using an embedded Chromium browser or an external application.
Browser and URL control Documented URL allowlist and blocklist policies; additional policies require compatibility testing. Management and app policies are version- and enrollment-dependent; verify notification and pop-up handling in the assigned app. Browser choice and kiosk restrictions depend on the session configuration.
Power and display Configure Windows idle and display policies separately; the cited kiosk pages do not provide a universal sleep recipe. Google documents idle action, dim, screen-off, and app power controls; apply them for the relevant AC or battery context. Disable screensaver and verify OS display power management plus the physical display’s own power-saving mode.
Maintenance impact Open/save dialogs are not automatically locked down; plan local console access because Remote Desktop is not supported for setup. Remote management and updates are strengths, but licensing and app compatibility must be confirmed. Kiosk mode can disable input devices, pointer, taskbar, notifications, and automatic updates.

Troubleshoot by symptom instead of changing every setting

The page is full-screen but the screen still turns off

Check the operating-system idle and display timers first, then inspect the monitor or television menu. A browser kiosk does not control an external display’s independent sleep or eco timer. On ChromeOS, confirm the documented power values were assigned to the device and the power source in use.

A notification appears over an otherwise locked sign

Identify whether it is an OS toast, browser notification, extension message, or an in-page modal. Remove unnecessary extensions and apply the platform’s supported notification policies. If the message originates inside the signage site, change the site’s workflow or provide a controlled in-page state; kiosk mode cannot rewrite the site’s own HTML.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The kiosk opens a blank page or a sign-in screen

Check the launch URL, certificate chain, DNS, proxy, allowlist, and authentication dependencies. Test every required domain in the selected browser. A restrictive allowlist that omits a media CDN or identity endpoint can look like a sleep or pop-up failure when it is actually a navigation or network failure.

Staff cannot perform maintenance

Use the documented administrator exit or remote-management path, schedule maintenance outside public hours, and keep a tested rollback. On IGEL, remember that kiosk mode may suppress input and updates. On Windows, perform Assigned Access setup at the console rather than through Remote Desktop.

The app does not relaunch after a crash

Confirm that the device is using the platform’s kiosk session rather than a manually opened browser window. Recheck the assigned account, app assignment, startup configuration, and version-specific policy behavior, then reproduce the failure during a controlled test.

Operational checklist for sign-off

  • Supported OS edition, enrollment, management license, and browser/app version are recorded.
  • Signage URL, required service domains, authentication flow, and media formats are documented.
  • Full-screen kiosk or signage session starts automatically and relaunches as intended.
  • OS idle, dimming, screen-off, and sleep policies are configured independently from browser settings.
  • Attached display power-saving and brightness controls are disabled or set to an approved behavior.
  • Notification, pop-up, URL, and extension policies have been tested on the deployed image.
  • Cold boot, idle timeout, network interruption, app restart, update, and recovery tests have named owners and recorded results.
  • Administrator exit, credentials, remote support, maintenance window, and rollback instructions are available to the operations team.
