The reliable way to keep Apple Intelligence from exposing private messages or files on a family-accessible device is to combine separate Apple Accounts with device-level controls: turn off summaries, hide lock-screen previews, lock sensitive apps, restrict children’s Intelligence and Siri features, and prevent Siri from answering while shared hardware is locked. Apple’s on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute protect data from unnecessary Apple access, but they cannot stop another person from reading something displayed on an unlocked screen.
What Family Members Can See—and What Family Sharing Does Not Share
Family Sharing is not a shared Apple Intelligence profile. Apple’s design expects every person to use a separate Apple Account: “Each member uses their own Apple Account, so everyone’s experience is personalized and private.” Shared subscriptions and eligible purchases do not require sharing message content, mail, files, Siri context, or Apple Intelligence activity.
Privacy problems usually occur because a family member can physically use a device, see its lock-screen notifications, open an unlocked app, or ask Siri a question while the device is available. Those are display and access issues, not evidence that Family Sharing has merged everyone’s private data.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Separate accounts protect identity boundaries. A person signed in with their own Apple Account keeps their iCloud data and personalized Apple Intelligence context associated with that account rather than a household login.
- Visible output is still visible. A notification summary, message preview, Mail summary, Siri answer, or generated text shown on a family-accessible device can be read by someone nearby.
- Settings are often device-specific. Locking an app on an iPhone does not automatically lock the same app on an iPad or Mac.
1. Give Every Person a Separate Apple Account
Do this before changing individual Intelligence settings. A single Apple Account shared by spouses, children, or other household members defeats the privacy separation Family Sharing is intended to provide.

- On the family organizer’s iPhone or iPad, open Settings > [your name] > Family.
- Use Add Member to invite the person with their own Apple Account, or create an account for a child when Apple presents that option.
- On each person’s device, sign in with that person’s account rather than the organizer’s credentials.
- Check account identity in Settings > [name]. The name and account details should belong to the device’s actual user.
Do not treat a shared family iPad passcode as an account boundary. Anyone who can unlock a device can potentially reach the signed-in account’s apps and data unless you add app locks and Screen Time restrictions.
2. Turn Off Apple Intelligence Summaries That Could Reveal Text
Summaries are designed to condense information, which also means they can place private words in a prominent notification or app view. Disable each summary category that could expose content on a device other people can see.
Messages summaries
- Open Settings > Apps > Messages.
- Find the Apple Intelligence summary control for Messages and turn it off.
This prevents the Messages app from generating the feature’s conversation summaries. It does not erase messages already stored in the conversation.

Notification Summaries
- Open Settings > Notifications.
- Open Summarize Notifications and switch it off, or disable summarization for individual apps that carry private information.
Review this on every iPhone, iPad, or other Apple device that a relative can pick up. A summary generated on one device can still reveal the underlying notification’s subject or meaning even when the original message is not fully displayed.
Priority Notifications
In Settings > Notifications, review the Priority Notifications control and disable it if automatically elevating selected notifications would make private information more conspicuous. Priority handling and summarization are different features, so check both.
3. Hide Notification Previews on the Lock Screen
Apple says notification previews can include text from Messages and Mail, as well as details from calendar invitations. On a shared or frequently unattended device, set previews to appear only after authentication.
- Open Settings > Notifications > Show Previews.
- Select When Unlocked for a balance between convenience and privacy, or select Never to suppress preview text even after unlocking.
- Return to Settings > Notifications, open especially sensitive apps, and verify their lock-screen alert options.
When Unlocked still lets the device owner read the preview after Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode succeeds. Choose Never on a device that children, guests, or other household members may handle while it is unlocked.

Preview settings reduce screen exposure; they do not remove the notification from Notification Center. If another person can authenticate, they may still see the alert unless the app itself is protected.
4. Lock Apps That Contain Private Information
Apple’s app-lock feature requires Face ID, Touch ID, or the device passcode. Apple states that information from a locked app will not appear in notification previews, search, Siri suggestions, or call history. This is the strongest local control for a particular app, but it is applied separately on each device.
- Go to the Home Screen or App Library and locate the sensitive app.
- Touch and hold the app icon.
- Choose Require Face ID, Require Touch ID, or the equivalent passcode option.
- Authenticate when prompted.
- Repeat the process on every iPhone or iPad that contains the same private data.
Consider locking Messages, Mail, Photos, Notes, cloud-storage apps, password managers, health apps, and any app that displays private work or financial information. Locking an app does not sign the account out or delete its data; it inserts an authentication step before the app and its protected content can be used.
5. Restrict Apple Intelligence and Siri for a Child’s Device
Parents and guardians can use Family and Screen Time controls to limit what Apple Intelligence features a child’s managed device can use. These controls are broader than an app lock because they govern feature categories for the child’s account and device.

- On the family organizer’s device, open Settings > Screen Time.
- Select the child’s name.
- Open Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Open the section for Siri and Apple Intelligence (the exact wording can vary by system release).
- Choose whether the child may use Siri AI, Siri Classic, or no Siri.
- Review and restrict Writing Tools, Image Creation, and Web Content as appropriate.
- Review Intelligence Extensions, including extensions that connect to services such as ChatGPT, and turn off any capability the child should not access.
These restrictions address feature availability, not just what appears on the lock screen. They are useful when the concern is that a child could deliberately ask Siri to summarize, rewrite, create, or retrieve information on a family-managed device.
6. Stop Siri From Answering on Shared Hardware
When several Apple devices hear “Siri,” Apple says the device that hears best or was used most recently may respond. A family member can therefore receive an answer from the wrong device if multiple phones, tablets, or Macs are nearby.
Mac
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Open Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Turn off Allow Siri when locked.
With that setting disabled, a locked Mac should not provide Siri responses until someone unlocks it. This is particularly important for a Mac in a shared room or family office.
iPhone or iPad
When you do not want a nearby iPhone or iPad to respond, place it face down. Apple documents this as a way to prevent the device from responding to “Siri.” Use it when several family devices are present or when a private request should be handled by a different device.

For conversations involving private messages or work information, also avoid leaving the intended device unlocked on a table. Siri restrictions cannot prevent someone from reading an answer that is already displayed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How Apple’s Privacy Architecture Fits In
Apple says, “In many cases, Apple Intelligence models run entirely on device so that a task can be completed without data leaving your device.” When a request needs more capacity, Apple’s Private Cloud Compute is designed to process the request only to fulfill it, without retaining the data or making it accessible to Apple.
Those protections concern how Apple’s systems handle request data. They do not create a privacy barrier between people who can see the same screen. An on-device summary can still be read by a relative, and a Private Cloud Compute response can still be displayed in a notification or Siri result.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the controls according to the threat you are addressing:
- Concern about Apple receiving request data: Apple’s on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute architecture are the relevant protections.
- Concern about a family member seeing text: Hide previews, disable summaries, lock apps, and keep devices locked.
- Concern about a child using generative features: Apply Screen Time restrictions for Siri, Writing Tools, image creation, web content, and Intelligence Extensions.
- Concern about the wrong device answering: Disable Siri while locked on Macs and place iPhones or iPads face down when necessary.
Which Control Should You Use?
| Control | Protects | Scope | Authentication or friction | Coverage note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Separate Apple Accounts | Account identity, iCloud data, and personalized context | Each family member | Separate sign-in | Set up as the foundation for Family Sharing |
| Disable summaries | Generated condensed text in Messages, Mail, and notifications | Feature or app on one device | Low; content remains available normally | Review Messages, Mail, Notification Summaries, and Priority Notifications separately |
| Show Previews: When Unlocked or Never | Lock-screen message, Mail, and calendar text | All notifications or selected apps | Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode when set to When Unlocked | Apply per device; Never gives the least lock-screen disclosure |
| Require Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode for an app | App contents and related suggestions, previews, search, and call history | One app on one device | Authentication each time the app is opened | Repeat on every device holding the same data |
| Screen Time Intelligence and Siri restrictions | Children’s access to Siri AI, Siri Classic, Writing Tools, image creation, web content, and Intelligence Extensions | Family-managed child account and devices | Parent-managed Screen Time settings | Best for governing feature availability rather than hiding existing data |
| Allow Siri when locked: off on Mac | Siri responses from a locked Mac | One Mac | Requires unlocking before Siri can respond | Does not lock apps or hide an already visible screen |
| Place iPhone or iPad face down | That device’s response to “Siri” | One device while face down | Simple physical action | Use when multiple devices could hear the request |
A Practical Setup for a Shared Household
For an adult’s personal iPhone that relatives may occasionally handle, use separate Apple Accounts, set notification previews to When Unlocked or Never, disable Message and Mail summaries, and lock the apps that contain the most sensitive data. Repeat the app locks and notification choices on an iPad or Mac rather than assuming they synchronize.
For a child’s device, create or use the child’s own Apple Account in Family Sharing, then configure Screen Time’s Content & Privacy Restrictions. Decide explicitly whether Siri AI, Siri Classic, Writing Tools, image creation, web content, and Intelligence Extensions are allowed. The restriction should match the child’s age, the information on the device, and whether the device is used for school or shared family tasks.
For a shared Mac, turn off Allow Siri when locked and require a password after sleep or the screen saver starts. For a shared iPad, use separate accounts where supported by the device and lock sensitive apps for the person whose data is stored there. A family device should not be treated as a private device merely because Family Sharing is enabled.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting: If Private Information Still Appears
A message summary is still visible
- Check both the Messages summary setting and Notification Summaries; they are independent.
- Open Settings > Notifications > Show Previews and choose When Unlocked or Never.
- Inspect the individual Messages notification settings for lock-screen delivery.
Mail text appears even though summaries are off
- Review Mail’s message-preview summary control under Settings > Apps > Mail.
- Check the global and app-specific notification preview settings.
- Lock the Mail app if the device is accessible to other people after it has been unlocked.
A relative can still open the private app
- Confirm that Require Face ID, Require Touch ID, or the passcode option was applied to the app icon, not merely enabled for another app.
- Repeat the lock on every device that contains the account or synchronized data.
- Use a device passcode that other family members do not know; an app lock cannot protect content from someone who can authenticate with the device passcode.
Siri answers from the wrong device
- Move the intended device closer or place other iPhones and iPads face down.
- On a Mac, turn off Allow Siri when locked in System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Do not leave a shared device unlocked while discussing private information.
A child can still use an Intelligence feature
- Return to Settings > Screen Time > [child] > Content & Privacy Restrictions and review the Siri and Apple Intelligence section.
- Check each category—Siri AI, Siri Classic, Writing Tools, image creation, web content, and Intelligence Extensions—rather than relying on one master decision.
- Verify that the child’s device is signed in to the managed child account, not an adult’s shared Apple Account.
Privacy Checklist
- Every family member uses a separate Apple Account.
- Messages summaries are disabled where private conversations appear.
- Mail message-preview summaries are disabled where private mail appears.
