Dutch elm disease (DED) is managed by spotting symptoms early, confirming the diagnosis, and limiting the spread of infected wood and root connections. It is not reliably cured once advanced. Before pruning or removing an elm, consult a qualified arborist or local tree-health authority: other diseases can look similar, and local rules may govern pruning, pesticide use, and disposal.
How Dutch elm disease spreads
Dutch elm disease is a vascular wilt caused by Ophiostoma novo-ulmi and Ophiostoma ulmi. In North America, elm bark beetles—including the native elm bark beetle (Hylurgopinus rufipes) and European elm bark beetle (Scolytus multistriatus)—spread it as they feed. The beetles breed in dead or weakened elm wood and can carry fungal spores to healthy trees. Once inside, the fungus disrupts water movement through the tree’s xylem. The disease can also spread between neighboring elms through connected roots, called root grafts. Source
How to recognize a possible infection
Symptoms may start on a single branch or high in the crown. Leaves yellow or curl, wilt, turn brown, and may fall. This “flagging” can spread to other branches. Brown streaking in the wood beneath the bark is another clue. These signs raise suspicion but do not confirm DED; other wilt diseases can look similar, so send a sample promptly to a diagnostic laboratory for a positive diagnosis. Source

What to do when you suspect DED
- Limit unnecessary disturbance. Avoid routine pruning or wounding while local bark beetles are active. Timing varies by region, and some areas may have pruning restrictions.
- Get a diagnosis. Contact a qualified arborist or local tree-health authority and arrange laboratory testing before taking irreversible action.
- Ask about root connections. If nearby susceptible elms may share root grafts, an arborist can assess whether severing them before removing an infected tree could reduce transmission.
- Plan wood handling before cutting. Confirm local disposal rules and use an approved method that prevents beetles from surviving in infected or dead elm wood.
Dead or dying elm wood with bark can provide beetle breeding habitat. Depending on local rules and circumstances, recommended disposal methods include debarking, chipping, burning, or burial. Do not store or transport diseased elm firewood or chips unless local rules allow it and the material has been treated appropriately. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada advises against storing, transporting, or using elm plants, wood, or chips in its guidance area, and recommends prompt burning or burial. Source
Can pruning save an infected elm?
Therapeutic pruning may preserve a valuable tree only in limited circumstances: the infection must be caught early and remain confined to a small part of the crown. The Morton Arboretum says pruning is most effective when no more than 5% of the tree is symptomatic. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach describes possible fungicide-assisted saving when less than 10% of the crown has wilted. Have a trained arborist assess the tree. Pruning is unlikely to work if the main stem is infected or infection arrived through root grafts. If extensive flagging is present or the tree is dead, prompt removal and sanitation may be the safer way to reduce continued spread; confirm the appropriate timing and disposal method locally. When fungicide injection may be considered
Systemic fungicide injection is primarily preventive or an early intervention for a valuable tree, not a dependable cure for advanced DED. The Morton Arboretum says properly applied treatments may protect American elms for three years; that statement should not be generalized to every product or tree. Iowa State says treatment of early infections should be performed by a certified pesticide applicator. Check current product labels, local pesticide rules, and applicator requirements, and use a licensed professional rather than attempting a do-it-yourself injection. How to reduce risk through pruning and sanitation
Time routine pruning carefully
Avoid unnecessary pruning and wounds during local bark-beetle activity. Wisconsin DNR’s July 2026 guidance advises avoiding growing-season pruning of native elms and resistant American elm cultivars when practical. The relevant season differs by region, so check with your local forestry or tree-health authority before scheduling work. Wisconsin DNR
Remove and dispose of risky wood appropriately
When DED is confirmed, or an elm is dead or dying, promptly handling the wood can remove beetle breeding material. Disposal requirements are jurisdiction-specific: check them before cutting, chipping, burning, burying, storing, or moving elm material. Source

Consider root grafts before removal
Neighboring susceptible elms may be connected underground. An arborist can determine whether severing root grafts before removing an infected tree is appropriate. A 2017 USDA Forest Service workshop paper cites considering severance among contiguous susceptible elms within 25 to 50 feet; that is a distance for consideration, not a universal limit or guarantee that grafts do or do not exist. Which elms to plant in the future
American elm (Ulmus americana) is highly susceptible. Some other species and cultivars have greater tolerance or resistance, but none should be treated as immune. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada describes Siberian elm as moderately tolerant, while the Morton Arboretum describes Asiatic elms, including lacebark and Siberian elm, as highly resistant. Wisconsin DNR identifies ‘Princeton’, ‘Valley Forge’, ‘New Harmony’, and Prairie Expedition® among American elm cultivars with resistance histories. Resistance results vary, and some cultivars have not been adequately tested. Choose stock suited to your region from a reputable nursery, and diversify a planting rather than replacing one elm monoculture with another. Wisconsin DNR reports outcomes ranging from 96% survival seven years after inoculation to 18% for different cultivars in one study, and 100% survival after inoculation for some hybrids in cited studies; these study results are not forecasts for every cultivar, site, or planting.
