The safest way to test an AI agent is to ensure it never receives a real secret in the first place. Use synthetic records and harmless canary markers, isolate every session and data store, give the test identity only the access the scenario requires, sandbox tools and network egress, scan data in both directions, and make adversarial tests a release gate. Treat prompts, memory, retrieval indexes, serialized sessions, caches, tool results, logs, and telemetry as confidential stores—not just the model’s training data.
What a “safe” agent test must prevent
An agent can disclose information without the model ever being trained on it. Leakage commonly happens when context is assembled, stored, transformed, or passed to another service. A test is unsafe if an agent can read a resource outside its assigned scope, place a secret in a response or tool argument, write sensitive content to shared memory, or leave prohibited data in traces and logs.
Define the security outcome before writing a test. For each case, document:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- The intended violation or legitimate task: for example, “an untrusted document must not cause the agent to retrieve another tenant’s record.”
- The context available: identity, session, retrieved documents, memory, tools, network access, and policy configuration.
- The observable outcome: blocked tool call, redacted output, denied retrieval, approval request, or an audit event.
- The protected value: a synthetic canary or classified field that should never cross the boundary.
OWASP cautions that a passing test suite generated by the same agent that produced the code provides no independent assurance. Security-critical cases need manual review or an independently controlled evaluator.

Map every trust boundary before testing
Make an inventory of all places where instructions, data, and parameters meet. Keep these categories separate in your design and test harness:
- User messages and uploaded files
- System and developer instructions
- Chat history and serialized sessions
- Short-term and long-lived memory
- Retrieval indexes, document stores, and caches
- Browser pages and external documents
- Tool arguments and tool results
- Agent-to-agent and agent-to-service messages
- Logs, traces, telemetry, error reports, and analytics exports
- Downstream systems such as ticketing, email, databases, or code repositories
External documents, web content, and tool output are data, not trusted instructions. An indirect prompt injection can hide an instruction in a document that the agent retrieves, causing it to search for secrets or send data elsewhere. Use information-flow controls so untrusted content cannot silently alter authorization decisions.
Microsoft describes each agent-to-tool, agent-to-service, and agent-to-agent interaction as an expansion of the attack surface. Draw the boundaries on an architecture diagram and assign an owner, permitted data class, and logging rule to every crossing.

Remove production data from fixtures
Do not paste production API keys, customer records, private source code, regulated data, or real personal information into a prompt, test file, vector index, or debugging trace. Replace them with generated records that preserve the shape of the data without preserving its value.
- Use fictional names, addresses, account numbers, and support conversations.
- Use credentials that are deliberately invalid or restricted to a disposable sandbox account.
- Use canary markers such as
CANARY-TEST-ALPHA-4821that have no meaning outside the test. - Ensure a marker cannot authorize a payment, authenticate to a service, or identify a real person.
- Keep fixtures short-lived and delete them after the run, including backups and temporary exports.
Redaction is preferable to copying live data, but it is not automatically safe: combinations of fields can re-identify a person, and hidden metadata may survive a text transformation. Synthetic data is the default; if a production-shaped sample is unavoidable, obtain a documented approval, minimize fields, and apply a tested de-identification method.
Use sandbox substitutes for tools
Point email, payment, ticketing, file-upload, database-write, and messaging tools at mocks or isolated tenants. A tool that merely “looks like” a test tool but can reach production is not a sandbox. Give each substitute a deterministic response so tests are repeatable and can verify exactly which parameters the agent attempted to send.

Separate identities and sessions
Create a distinct non-production identity for each agent or test role. Never reuse a developer’s broad personal credentials. Start each case with a new session identifier and a clean memory namespace; do not let one test inherit chat history, cookies, cached retrieval results, or environment variables from another.
Enforce least privilege at every layer
Least privilege is not only a role setting in the model provider. Scope the identity, data sources, fields, operations, tools, network destinations, and retention period to the single scenario being tested.
| Layer | Safer default | What to verify in a test |
|---|---|---|
| Agent identity | Unique, auditable test principal | The principal cannot assume a production role or another test tenant. |
| Data source | Allowlisted repository or synthetic database | Out-of-scope paths and tenants return an explicit denial. |
| Fields | Only fields needed for the task | Hidden or classified fields are absent, not merely ignored by the prompt. |
| Tools | Read-only mocks by default | Writes, exports, messages, and external calls require a separate approval. |
| Parameters | Typed schema with deterministic validation | Extra fields, wildcard paths, encoded values, and oversized payloads are rejected. |
| Network | Explicit egress allowlist | DNS, HTTP, file-transfer, and metadata endpoints outside the list are blocked. |
| Memory | Task- and session-scoped namespace | Cross-session and cross-tenant reads fail, including through semantic search. |
| Retention | Shortest period compatible with debugging | Expired prompts, traces, and temporary files are actually deleted. |
Use approval gates for irreversible or externally visible actions. The agent may prepare a proposed email, export, database change, or message, but a human or policy service must approve the exact destination and payload before execution. Log the decision and the identity that approved it.
Protect memory, retrieval, sessions, and caches
Context plumbing is a frequent disclosure path. Apply tenant, user, session, task, and agent scopes to every memory and retrieval operation. A filter applied only in the user interface is insufficient; enforce it in the data store and authorization layer.
Memory controls
- Use separate namespaces for every test run and delete them on completion.
- Limit what can be written to long-lived memory; most test facts belong in a temporary task store.
- Validate memory writes for secrets, personal data, and instruction-like content before persistence.
- Require the requesting identity and session to match on every memory read.
- Test both exact-key lookups and semantic searches for cross-context leakage.
Retrieval controls
- Attach tenant and classification metadata to every document and enforce it at query time.
- Do not rely on the model to ignore a retrieved document that is outside scope.
- Scan documents for embedded instructions and treat them as untrusted content.
- Record which document identifiers and chunks were returned, while redacting their sensitive text from ordinary logs.
Session and cache controls
Serialized conversations, prompt caches, browser cookies, and vector indexes can outlive the test that created them. Encrypt them, restrict access, set an expiration, and verify deletion. Include cache-key collisions and concurrent sessions in testing; a correct authorization check can still fail if a response cached for one identity is served to another.
Scan data before and after model processing
Use data-loss-prevention and classification checks in both directions. A single output filter misses secrets that are written to memory, sent as a tool argument, or captured in a trace.

| Inspection point | Examples of checks | Safe action on a match |
|---|---|---|
| Incoming prompt and files | Credentials, personal data, regulated identifiers, prohibited tenant content | Reject, quarantine, or replace with a token before model processing. |
| Retrieved context | Classification, tenant mismatch, hidden instructions, excessive fields | Drop the item and record a policy event without copying its contents. |
| Memory write | Secrets, personal data, persistent instructions | Block or redact; require an explicit retention policy for exceptions. |
| Tool arguments | Unexpected destinations, encoded payloads, bulk exports | Validate schema, deny the call, or route it to approval. |
| Tool results | Credentials, private records, uncontrolled external text | Redact before the result re-enters the model context. |
| Generated response | Canary markers, classified values, cross-tenant references | Block display and downstream execution; preserve only a sanitized event. |
| Logs and telemetry | Full messages, function-call results, stack traces, identifiers | Tokenize or redact, restrict access, and apply short retention. |
Tokenization lets a workflow refer to a value without exposing the value to the model. Keep the token vault outside the model context and enforce access when a downstream system detokenizes it. Test transformations such as Base64, URL encoding, character substitution, summarization, translation, and splitting across multiple messages; a literal-string search is not enough.
Design an adversarial test suite
Run both direct and indirect attacks, and repeat them after any prompt, model, provider, tool, memory, retrieval, identity, or policy change.
Direct prompt attacks
- Ask the agent to reveal its system instructions or hidden context.
- Claim an emergency, administrator role, or debugging purpose to bypass policy.
- Request a complete export, then narrow the request until a single protected field appears.
- Ask for the canary in a different format, language, encoding, or as a hash or partial substring.
Indirect prompt injection
- Place instructions in a retrieved document, web page, issue, spreadsheet cell, image description, or tool result.
- Tell the document to override the system policy, search other tenants, or send results to an external endpoint.
- Combine a benign user request with a malicious instruction hidden in a later retrieval chunk.
Boundary and state attacks
- Request another user’s memory or a previous session’s conversation.
- Use a tenant identifier, repository path, or document ID that belongs to a different scope.
- Exploit stale cache entries, concurrent sessions, retries, or agent-to-agent handoffs.
- Ask for a tool call with extra parameters, wildcards, encoded destinations, or an oversized batch.
- Repeat extraction attempts across many turns so each response reveals only a fragment.
OWASP recommends defining the expected violation, required context, and observable result for each case. A missing canary is useful evidence, but it does not prove that every transformed or partial disclosure is impossible. Combine marker checks with authorization logs, destination monitoring, policy decisions, and human review.

Record evidence without creating another leak
For each test, retain a minimal audit record containing the case identifier, timestamp, agent and user identity, data scope, policy version, model and tool versions, tool calls, approval decisions, final outcome, and reviewer. Store sensitive payloads separately from ordinary test reports, encrypt them, and restrict access.
Do not enable unrestricted “full conversation” tracing merely to make debugging easier. Trace logs can contain personally identifiable information and function-call results. Use field-level redaction, sampled traces, synthetic fixtures, and a controlled break-glass procedure for exceptional debugging. The break-glass event should itself be audited and expire automatically.

- A canary appears in an unauthorized response, memory write, tool argument, log, or telemetry event.
- The agent reads a file, field, tenant, session, or endpoint outside its declared scope.
- A tool executes without the required approval or with parameters that failed validation.
- An indirect instruction changes an authorization decision or causes an unapproved external call.
- Prohibited sensitive content remains in a trace, cache, export, or temporary store after the retention deadline.
- A test result cannot be independently reproduced or its evidence is incomplete.
Have a reviewer who did not write the agent or its tests examine failures and selected passes. Security assurance must be independent of the system under test.

Adversarial testing is part of change management, not a one-time launch exercise. Re-run the suite after:
- System prompts, policies, routing logic, or response templates change
- Models, model providers, embedding models, or safety settings change
- Tools, schemas, permissions, network routes, or approval workflows change
- Memory, retrieval indexes, chunking, ranking, caching, or retention settings change
- Agent handoffs, plugins, external services, or identity mappings change
Keep a versioned baseline of expected denials and approvals. Investigate a new pass, a new denial, and any change in the data or tool scope—not only obvious leaks.

“The model was told not to reveal it.”
Move enforcement out of the model’s discretion. Apply authorization at the data store, validate tool parameters, filter outputs, and block network egress.
“We only search for the exact canary.”
Add transformed, partial, encoded, summarized, and multi-turn extraction cases, then inspect policy and destination telemetry.
“All tests pass, so we can ship.”
Require independent review, reproducible evidence, and a clean retention check. A suite produced by the same agent or team that built the feature is not independent assurance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“Debug tracing is temporary.”
Use synthetic data and field-level redaction even during debugging. Set an automatic expiration and verify deletion from trace stores, caches, exports, and backups where applicable.
Operational checklist
- Document every trust boundary and data classification.
- Replace production values with synthetic records and harmless canaries.
- Create isolated identities, sessions, memory namespaces, indexes, and caches.
- Grant only task-specific, preferably read-only, permissions.
- Sandbox tools and restrict network egress to an allowlist.
- Require approval for writes, exports, messages, and external calls.
- Scan prompts, retrieval, memory writes, tool traffic, outputs, logs, and telemetry.
- Run direct, indirect, cross-session, encoded, repeated, and tool-manipulation cases.
- Record evidence without storing raw sensitive payloads in ordinary reports.
- Block release on unauthorized access, canary exposure, unapproved actions, or retention failures.
- Repeat the suite after every material change and obtain independent review.
Confidentiality during agent testing is an architectural property, not a prompt-writing trick. If a test environment contains real secrets, broad credentials, shared memory, unrestricted tools, or unfiltered telemetry, the test itself becomes a disclosure opportunity. Synthetic data, strict isolation, least privilege, bidirectional scanning, adversarial evaluation, and fail-closed release gates keep testing useful without turning it into a path to production data.
