To prevent overheating, charge your iPhone or iPad indoors or in shade at 0–35°C (32–95°F), keep the device, GaN adapter, cable and wireless pad uncovered, and use an undamaged USB-C Power Delivery (PD) charger with a suitable cable. A 65W or 100W rating does not force an iPhone to draw that much power: USB PD negotiates the voltage and current the device supports. If charging pauses or the screen says “Charging On Hold,” move the device to a cooler, ventilated place and wait for its temperature to return to normal.

Why a GaN charger can still get hot

Gallium-nitride (GaN) is a power-electronics technology that lets manufacturers build compact, efficient switching circuits. It can reduce the size of a charger for a given output capability, but it does not make heat disappear. Every charger loses some energy as heat while converting AC power from the wall into the DC voltage requested by a phone or tablet.

Surface temperature depends on several factors at the same time:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Output power: Higher-power charging generally creates more conversion heat than low-power charging.
  • Efficiency at the current load: A charger may be most efficient at one load and less efficient at another.
  • Ambient temperature: A charger in a hot room, car or patch of sunlight has less ability to shed heat.
  • Airflow: Blankets, cushions, clothing and tight spaces trap the heat around the adapter.
  • Port sharing: A multi-port charger reallocates power when several devices are connected, changing the load and heat pattern.
  • Cable and connector condition: Bent, corroded, loose or damaged contacts can create resistance and localized heating.
  • Device workload: Gaming, navigation, camera recording and high-quality video streaming add heat inside the iPhone or iPad while it is charging.

A warm adapter during normal charging is not automatically dangerous. An adapter that is too hot to handle comfortably, smells unusual, sparks, or becomes hot in a cool, open area is a reason to disconnect it and investigate.

Apple’s temperature limits and built-in protections

Apple specifies an operating ambient range of 0–35°C (32–95°F) for iPhone and iPad use. A parked car, direct sun through a window, roofed outdoor area on a hot day, or an enclosed bag can exceed that range even when the room itself feels moderate.

Apple says iOS and iPadOS devices have built-in protections to prevent overheating. When the device temperature rises beyond its preferred charging range, the software can reduce charging power or stop charging temporarily. Charging resumes after the device returns to a normal temperature. The “Charging On Hold” message is therefore a protective response, not evidence that the battery has been overcharged.

The protection does not make an unsafe setup safe. A phone left under bedding can continue to accumulate heat before its controls react, and a defective cable or adapter can present an electrical hazard independent of the phone’s temperature sensors.

A safe charging setup: step-by-step

  1. Choose a suitable location. Charge indoors or in shade where the ambient temperature is between 0°C and 35°C. Keep the adapter near an open wall outlet rather than inside a drawer, bag or vehicle console.
  2. Clear the air around every component. Place the iPhone or iPad, GaN adapter, cable and any wireless charger on a hard, uncovered surface. Do not put them under a pillow, blanket, clothing or your body.
  3. Inspect the cable. Do not use a cable with fraying, crushed insulation, exposed wire, bent connector shells, corrosion or a loose plug. For a Lightning iPhone, use a compliant USB-C-to-Lightning cable; for a USB-C iPhone or iPad, use a suitable USB-C cable.
  4. Inspect the adapter and outlet connection. Do not use an adapter that is cracked, wet, dropped, sparking or producing an odor. Make sure the plug and cable connector are fully inserted and dry.
  5. Use USB-C Power Delivery when required. Select a charger that lists USB-C PD profiles appropriate for your model. PD allows the charger and device to agree on a supported voltage and current instead of applying a fixed high-power output.
  6. Connect directly to the wall outlet. Avoid loose, damaged or overloaded extension equipment. If you must use a power strip, it should be in good condition and rated for the load; keep the charger’s ventilation openings unobstructed.
  7. Reduce heat-producing activity. Pause demanding games, turn-by-turn navigation, camera recording and high-resolution streaming while charging in a warm environment. Lower screen brightness and close unnecessary high-load apps if the device is already warm.
  8. Remove a heat-trapping case when necessary. A thick, insulated or poorly ventilated case can slow heat release. Remove it if the device becomes unusually warm, especially during fast charging or wireless charging.
  9. Start charging and check the first few minutes. The adapter may become warm, but the phone should not rapidly become uncomfortable to hold. Check that the connector is not getting hotter than the surrounding cable.
  10. React to a pause promptly. If charging stops or “Charging On Hold” appears, unplug or move the setup to a cooler, ventilated place. Let the device return to normal temperature before resuming; do not force charging by covering it or placing it in a freezer.

Can a 65W GaN charger overcharge an iPhone or iPad?

No. A 65W label describes the charger’s maximum available output under its stated conditions; it is not a command that the phone must consume 65W. USB PD communication lets the Apple device request a supported power profile. An iPhone normally requests considerably less than the maximum available from a 65W adapter, while a compatible iPad may request a different profile.

Charger specification What it means What it does not mean
65W maximum output The adapter can provide up to 65W when a connected device and port profile request it. The iPhone will be forced to draw 65W.
USB-C PD The charger and device negotiate an allowed voltage/current combination. Every USB-C device supports every PD profile.
Multiple ports Available power may be divided or reallocated when more than one device is connected. Each port will always deliver its single-port maximum simultaneously.
GaN design Compact switching components can support efficient, small chargers. The adapter will remain cool in every environment or workload.

Choose a charger with clear PD specifications, thermal protection and safety compliance for your country. A higher wattage can be useful for charging a tablet, laptop and phone from one adapter, but it does not by itself improve an iPhone’s charging speed.

How to choose a third-party GaN charger safely

Apple permits third-party power adapters that comply with applicable country regulations and international or regional safety standards. Evaluate the complete charging system rather than relying on the GaN label or a large wattage number.

Check What to look for Why it matters for heat
USB-C PD profiles Published voltage and current combinations, including the profile required by your iPhone or iPad. Correct negotiation avoids unsuitable fixed output and supports controlled power reduction.
Thermal monitoring A documented temperature sensor and automatic power reduction or shutdown. The charger can respond when internal components become too hot.
Safety certification Recognized marks and documentation applicable to your country or region. Shows that the product was assessed against relevant electrical-safety requirements; verify the mark on the actual model.
Port allocation Per-port limits and the shared total when two or more ports are used. Prevents surprises when a second device changes the charger’s load and temperature.
Physical ventilation Clear instructions and a layout that does not block vents or place hot surfaces against fabric. Allows heat to escape during sustained output.
Cable rating and condition A cable appropriate for the negotiated PD current, with intact insulation and connectors. Limits resistive heating at the cable and plug.
Warranty and returns A clear support channel and return policy. Useful if the unit overheats, repeatedly cuts out or develops a fault.
Model compatibility Confirmation for your exact iPhone, iPad or Mac model and connector type. Ensures the device can request an appropriate profile and use the correct cable.

Marketing claims should be treated as claims unless supported by independent testing. For example, Anker states that its charger monitors internal temperature and that its ActiveShield system checks temperature 6 million times per day. Those are vendor product-page claims, not an independent comparison of surface temperatures across GaN and silicon chargers.

Keep the phone, adapter and wireless pad ventilated

Ventilation is the simplest control you can apply regardless of charger brand. Set the adapter on a hard surface with space around its sides. Keep the phone’s back and the wireless charging pad exposed. Do not stack the adapter on another heat-producing power brick, and do not coil a long cable tightly around the adapter while it is delivering power.

Wireless charging can add heat because energy crosses an air gap and alignment is important. Center the iPhone on the pad, remove metal objects from between the phone and pad, and remove a thick case if the phone becomes hot. If the pad or phone is warm before charging begins, cool the setup first instead of starting a long session.

Manage device workload while charging

The iPhone or iPad produces its own heat through its processor, display, radios and camera. Charging adds battery and power-conversion heat. Running several demanding functions at once can therefore trigger a temperature pause even when the adapter is operating normally.

  • Stop graphics-intensive games until charging is complete.
  • Move navigation away from a hot dashboard or windshield and, when practical, charge before a long trip.
  • Avoid extended camera recording while fast charging, especially in direct sun.
  • Reduce display brightness and disable unnecessary radios or background activity when the device is already warm.
  • Pause high-quality video streaming in a hot environment; download content earlier or wait for a cooler location.

These steps reduce the device’s internal heat load. They do not replace the need for an intact cable, a compliant adapter and an open charging location.

What to do when “Charging On Hold” appears

  1. Stop the activity that is making the device work hard and disconnect it from the charger if it is safe to do so.
  2. Move the device out of direct sunlight, a hot car, a pocket, bedding or any enclosed space.
  3. Remove a heat-trapping case and place the device on a cool, dry, hard surface with air around it.
  4. Allow the device to cool naturally until the warning clears. Do not use ice, a freezer, wet cloths or forced condensation.
  5. Inspect the cable, connector and adapter before reconnecting. If any part is damaged, wet, cracked, frayed, unusually hot or odorous, do not reuse it.
  6. Reconnect in a ventilated location and observe whether charging resumes normally.

Repeated pauses in a cool room with a known-good, compliant charger and cable indicate that the device needs service rather than a more powerful adapter.

Recognize equipment that must be taken out of service

Disconnect the setup and stop using the affected component if you notice any of the following:

  • Frayed insulation, exposed conductors, crushed cable sections or a connector that will not stay seated.
  • Cracks, deformation, liquid exposure or evidence that the adapter or wireless pad was dropped.
  • Sparking, smoke, a burning or chemical odor, buzzing that was not present before, or visible scorching.
  • Heat that becomes extreme quickly, especially when the adapter is unloaded or sitting in open air.
  • Moisture in the connector, outlet or charging port.

Apple warns that damaged cables, moisture and damaged adapters can cause fire, electric shock, injury or property damage. Do not open an adapter or attempt to repair a lithium-ion battery yourself.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom Likely contributors Action
Adapter is warm but charging is stable Normal conversion losses, sustained output or limited airflow. Keep it uncovered on a hard surface; check that the temperature remains comfortable to handle.
Phone becomes hot during gaming or navigation Device workload plus charging and warm surroundings. Pause the demanding app, move to shade or indoors, remove a heat-trapping case and let the phone cool.
“Charging On Hold” appears Device temperature outside its preferred charging range. Stop charging, improve ventilation and wait for normal temperature before reconnecting.
Charging is slow with two devices connected Shared multi-port power allocation. Read the charger’s per-port and combined-output specifications; disconnect the second device to test single-port behavior.
Connector or cable end is hotter than the adapter Damaged, contaminated or loose contacts; unsuitable cable; poor insertion. Unplug, inspect and replace the cable if there is any damage or looseness. Keep connectors dry and fully inserted.

Using multi-port 65W and higher-power chargers

A multi-port GaN charger may advertise 65W, 100W or more as a total. The figure can apply only when one designated port is used. Connecting an iPhone, iPad and another device may invoke a different allocation, lower the power available to one port, or make the adapter run warmer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before relying on a multi-port unit, read its output table. Confirm which port supports the required USB-C PD profile and what happens when a second port is occupied. Keep unused ports clear of metal objects and keep the whole unit ventilated. If a combination repeatedly causes heat or dropouts, charge devices separately to identify whether shared allocation is the trigger.

Hot cars, travel and outdoor charging

A vehicle interior can exceed Apple’s 35°C upper operating limit quickly in sunlight. Do not charge an iPhone on a dashboard, under a windshield, in a closed glove box or inside luggage exposed to heat. Move to shade or an air-conditioned interior and let the device cool before connecting it.

When traveling, pack the adapter so its prongs and cable cannot be bent, keep it dry, and allow it to reach room temperature before use after moving between very hot and cold environments. Never charge with a wet connector or while condensation is visible.

Practical temperature checks without guessing

iOS and iPadOS do not provide a user-facing numeric battery-temperature readout that can replace the device’s own protections. Use observable conditions instead: the phone should be comfortable to hold, the adapter should not smell or discolor, and charging should not repeatedly stop in a cool, ventilated room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not place a thermometer probe on an energized connector or open an adapter to measure internal parts. A non-contact reading of the room can help identify an obviously hot environment, but it cannot certify that a charger is safe. The charger’s documented protections, regional safety compliance and physical condition matter more than a single surface reading.

When professional service is the right answer

Stop charging and arrange service if an iPhone or iPad repeatedly overheats despite an ambient temperature within 0–35°C, open ventilation, a sound cable and a compliant charger. Also seek help after liquid exposure, a swollen battery, repeated unexpected shutdowns, a hot charging port or visible damage.

Use Apple or an authorized service provider for battery or device diagnosis. Do not puncture, disassemble or replace a lithium-ion battery without the required training and equipment. A more powerful GaN adapter cannot correct a failing battery, damaged port or internal thermal fault.

A concise prevention checklist

  • Charge between 0°C and 35°C, indoors or in shade.
  • Keep the phone, adapter, cable and wireless pad uncovered and ventilated.
  • Remove a thick case if it traps heat.
  • Use USB-C PD where required and a cable suited to the connector and negotiated current.
  • Keep every connector clean, dry and fully inserted.
  • Avoid gaming, navigation, camera recording and high-quality streaming while charging in heat.
  • Understand shared output on multi-port chargers.
  • Stop immediately for fraying, cracks, moisture, sparks, odor or extreme heat.
