Preserve a PC game as more than a folder of files. Keep the exact lawfully acquired edition, its installer or original disc, patches, manuals, ownership records, and a separate backup. Then write enough technical context—operating system, patch level, DRM, launcher requirements, settings, and tested workarounds—that you or someone else can reinstall the same version later.
This approach reduces dependence on a single computer, a live storefront, or memory of how an old title was configured. It does not give you permission to download, redistribute, or bypass protection on copies you are not entitled to use. Copyright and circumvention rules vary by country; the legal examples below are limited to the United States.
What PC-game preservation actually includes
A useful preservation set has three layers:
- Content: the original disc or lawfully acquired installer and distribution files, plus patches and extras you are entitled to access.
- Context: edition, distributor, language, build or patch number, operating-system requirements, DRM or launcher dependencies, and configuration details.
- Recovery: a separate copy, clear labels, documentation, and notes describing what was tested and how.
Preserving only an executable can leave you unable to identify the release, apply the right update, satisfy an activation check, or reproduce a working setup. Conversely, preserving only a store account leaves the game dependent on that account, the storefront’s download service, and any authentication servers that still operate.

Start by treating every release as a distinct preservation target. A boxed first release, a later budget edition, a digital re-release, a fan-modified repack, and a version bundled with expansions may contain different files and have different requirements.

Record identity and provenance
- Full title, edition or bundle name, and language.
- Publisher and developer, when known.
- Original source: physical disc, a named digital distributor, or another lawful channel.
- Release date, build identifier, and installed patch level.
- Date you acquired or copied the files.
- Receipt, serial number, product key, or other ownership record, stored privately.
Do not label a later re-release as the original release. If you keep more than one edition, give each one its own folder and manifest. A filename such as Game-Original-CD-1.00-English is more useful years later than old-game-backup.
2. Retain the best lawful source material available
Physical releases
Keep the original discs, printed manual, registration card, readme, errata sheet, maps, and any serial or activation information. Protect optical media from heat, scratches, and sunlight, but do not assume the disc will remain readable forever. If you make a digital image or file copy, the permission to do so depends on your jurisdiction and the circumstances; preservation is not a blanket authorization to defeat copy protection.
Digital releases
Retain the actual installer or distribution files you lawfully obtained, along with patches, language packs, manuals, readme files, and extras that you are entitled to access. Keep the original filenames when they help identify the release, and record which files belong together. Do not fill gaps with unauthorized downloads.

The Library of Congress lists this preference order for software and video-game content: “Uncompiled source code,” then “Gold master build,” then “Distribution file (e.g. iOS App Store Package (IPA), Android Package (APK), exe [Windows]).” An ordinary owner will usually have access only to the distribution file or original media, and those are realistic, useful targets.
For institutional submissions, the Library of Congress notes that an operating-system copy as a disk image may be needed when software cannot run on a commonly available operating system. That is an institutional preservation consideration, not a general instruction for consumers to copy an operating system or a statement about what your local law permits.

3. Make an independent backup and label it
Keep the retained files off the computer used for play. An external USB hard drive is one mass-storage category the Library of Congress identifies as acceptable for preservation submissions. Its guidance does not prescribe a consumer drive capacity, brand, drive type, cloud service, backup frequency, or checksum routine.
Use a predictable folder layout
Game Title - Edition - Build 1.00/
01_Original_Source— disc images, installer files, or distribution packages.02_Patches— update files with version numbers.03_Documentation— manuals, readmes, errata, and notes.04_Configuration— exported settings, saves, control mappings, and legally retained fixes.05_Manifest— a plain-text or spreadsheet record of names, sizes, dates, and checksums.
Use a second physical location for the independent copy when practical. The important distinction is that a backup should not disappear when the play computer fails, is stolen, or is replaced.

Write a manifest
At minimum, list every installer and patch filename, file size, date, version, source, and the edition to which it belongs. If you record checksums, name the algorithm and the exact files checked. A checksum can show that a file changed since you recorded it; it does not prove authenticity unless you compare it with a trustworthy reference value.
4. Keep documentation and descriptive metadata with the files
Save manuals, readme files, patch notes, errata, addenda, and relevant publisher documentation beside the game rather than in a separate archive that can lose its connection to the title.
Useful descriptive metadata includes the title, creator, creation date, place of publication, publisher, producer or distributor, rights information, and identifiers when known. Add a short plain-text readme explaining what is in each folder and which edition the files represent.

The goal is not to recreate an archive’s cataloging system. It is to ensure that a future installer, technician, or you can answer “What is this file, where did it come from, and which release does it belong to?” without guessing.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →5. Write compatibility notes that someone can reproduce
Compatibility information ages quickly. Windows updates, graphics drivers, launchers, and authentication services can change the result without any change to the game files. Record the environment as carefully as the files.
Record the test environment
- Operating system and edition, including whether a 32-bit or 64-bit environment mattered.
- Game edition, language, executable version, and patch level.
- CPU, graphics hardware and driver version, display resolution, refresh rate, and audio device when they affected behavior.
- Controller, keyboard, mouse, or compatibility-layer settings.
- Launcher, account, disc check, DRM, offline-activation limit, or external service requirement, if known.
- Compatibility settings, wrappers, emulators, configuration files, or community patches, including their version and source.
- Who tested it, the date of the test, and the exact setup.
Never mark a game “tested” merely because a forum post or old wiki entry says it worked. Distinguish “reported by another user” from “installed and launched on this setup.”
Use community references as leads, not authority
PCGamingWiki pages commonly expose fields for source, DRM, notes, keys, and operating systems. Those fields can help you find title-specific clues, but entries may change and may describe a different edition or patch. Cross-check every important detail against the publisher or developer, the installer contents, and the exact version you preserved.
How do I get an old PC game running on Windows 11?
Work from a copy of the preserved files and change one variable at a time. A disciplined process produces notes that can be repeated instead of a mysterious one-off fix.

- Important Notes for PS/Xbox Gaming Devices: You can play last-gen games (PS4 / Xbox One) directly from an external hard drive. However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
- Identify the build. Confirm the executable, language, patch level, and whether the game expects a disc, launcher, account, or online authentication.
- Install from the retained source. Keep the original installer and patch files untouched; install into a separate working directory so experiments do not alter the archive.
- Capture the baseline. Record what happens on an unmodified Windows 11 installation: launch result, error text, video mode, audio, input, saving, and quitting.
- Apply one compatibility change. Windows exposes compatibility options through the game’s executable or shortcut properties. Test an appropriate setting, document it, and repeat only after recording the result.
- Apply a versioned fix when necessary. If you use a wrapper, emulator, configuration file, or community patch, preserve its version, source, installation steps, and license or usage conditions alongside your notes.
- Retest the important paths. Launch, start or load a game, save, change a setting, quit, and relaunch. Record failures as well as successes.
GOG notes that Windows updates and graphics-driver changes can affect compatibility over time. A successful test therefore describes one environment and date; it is not a permanent guarantee.
How do I reinstall a game without the launcher?
An offline installer can remove the storefront download step, but it does not necessarily remove DRM, activation, an account requirement, or a server check. Before relying on a launcher-free reinstall, establish which of these the preserved edition needs.
- Locate the installer and every required patch in the preserved source folder.
- Read the included readme and your manifest for installation order, product-key requirements, language options, and known dependencies.
- Install on an isolated test system or a separate directory, keeping the original archive unchanged.
- Enter your own product key or account credentials only where the edition legitimately requires them; do not try to defeat an activation mechanism.
- Apply patches in the recorded order and test offline behavior, saving, loading, and relaunching.
- Update the compatibility notes with the result, error messages, and any service that is still required.
If the installer itself is missing, your lawful options depend on the distributor’s terms and the law where you live. Preservation notes are not a route to unauthorized copies.
Compare the main preservation routes
| Route | Edition fidelity and content | Offline and service dependence | Operating-system support | Compatibility changes | Availability and documentation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original media | Usually closest to the owned release, including its disc-era content and documentation. | May require a disc check, legacy activation, or a service that can disappear; a digital copy does not automatically change those requirements. | Depends on the original installer and the current operating system. | Preserves the original behavior unless you add a separately documented fix. | Availability depends on the physical media’s condition; manuals and inserts can be retained with it. |
| Lawfully retained offline installer | Matches the particular distribution build and included updates you saved. | Can install without downloading from a launcher, but DRM, account, or authentication requirements may remain. | Depends on the installer, its dependencies, and the operating system you recorded. | You choose whether to apply later patches or compatibility tools and can preserve both the clean and modified states. | Usable while the files remain readable; keep the installer, patches, and readme together. |
| Maintained commercial re-release | May include a different edition, fixes, settings, or omitted extras; verify content against your target release. | Terms vary; the storefront account or client may still matter even when the installed build is usable offline. | May receive focused support for a particular platform. | Updates can improve modern compatibility but may alter the original experience. | Availability and support are controlled by the distributor and can change. |
The best route depends on whether your priority is exact historical fidelity, a repeatable offline installation, or a maintained modern build. Keeping more than one lawful route can be sensible when their editions and dependencies differ.
What should I save before a game is delisted?
Delisting is a prompt to capture information while you can still verify it, not proof that every copy may be downloaded or shared. Save the installer or original media you are entitled to retain, patches and extras, manuals, product keys, receipts, release and patch identifiers, and screenshots or text describing launcher and DRM requirements. Add a compatibility test and a manifest before the storefront page or support files disappear.

If a current re-release is maintained, document exactly what it contains and how it differs from the edition you own. A replacement build may be easier to run while still being the wrong preservation target for someone seeking the original release.
What a maintained re-release can and cannot solve
GOG describes its Preservation Program as maintaining selected classic titles, providing dedicated technical support, and operating without DRM. Its FAQ says the team performs quality tests and updates games when needed, that titles remain in the initiative if they are delisted from sale, and that “The GOG Preservation Program is currently Windows-only.” These are the distributor’s claims about a selected program, not a guarantee for every classic game, every catalog title, or every platform.
A maintained re-release can reduce work on current Windows systems, but it may not preserve the exact executable, installer, soundtrack, manual, multiplayer service, or copy-protection behavior of another edition. Compare its contents with your manifest instead of treating a store listing as a complete historical record.

U.S. Copyright Office regulation 37 CFR § 201.40 contains narrow exemptions for particular video-game activities. One provision addresses lawfully acquired complete games when the copyright owner or an authorized representative has ceased providing access to an external server required for authentication; under specified conditions, it permits restoration for personal local gameplay.
Another provision covers eligible libraries, archives, and museums preserving qualifying games that are no longer reasonably available. It includes restrictions such as a noncommercial purpose and no access outside institutional premises. The regulation’s definition of “ceased to provide access” includes either an affirmative statement plus discontinued support, or at least six months without support with no restoration.
Those provisions do not create a general right to copy any game you own, download an abandoned title, distribute game files, or bypass protection whenever a server is inconvenient. They apply to defined circumstances and may not match the law where you live. For a specific dispute or preservation project, consult the current law and qualified legal advice in your jurisdiction.
Maintenance and recovery checklist
- Open the archive periodically and confirm that the backup media and files are readable.
- Keep the manifest with the game, not only on the computer used for play.
- When you create a new patch or configuration, preserve the unmodified installer and identify the modified state separately.
- Update notes after operating-system, driver, launcher, or hardware changes.
- Record failures with exact messages and dates; a failed test is useful evidence for the next installation.
- Keep ownership records and activation information private rather than posting them in a public archive.
A preservation set is successful when a future reader can identify the exact release, locate a lawful source file, understand its dependencies, and reproduce a documented test without relying on a vanished storefront page or your memory.
