Preserve an older PC game as a complete, documented package—not just as a copied executable. Identify the exact edition, keep the lawful installer or disc with patches, manuals, keys and save files, record every operating-system and service dependency, and test a known-working environment before support disappears. Check for an authorized modern release first, because it may provide a more reliable route than maintaining the original build.
Start with the exact game and edition
“The game” is often several different products: a boxed CD release, a later DVD edition, a download build, a regional executable, a compilation, or a re-release with different copy protection. Preservation decisions are only meaningful after you identify which one you own.
Record ownership and release details
- Write down the full title, edition, expansion or downloadable-content status, publisher, release region and approximate release year.
- Note where your copy came from: original disc, publisher download, authorized storefront account or another lawful source.
- Keep the product key, serial number, proof of purchase and account details needed for a legitimate installation. Store account recovery information securely rather than in a publicly shared archive.
- Record the exact installer or disc label, language, patch level and executable version. Two editions with the same marketing title can use different patches or activation systems.
Identify the release format
The Library of Congress’s Recommended Formats Statement – Software and Video Games distinguishes media-based releases from internet-based releases and treats documentation and preservation copies as part of the preservation problem. A disc is not interchangeable with a download: the disc may contain an older executable, require original media at launch, or omit patches that were later delivered online.

Map dependencies before they fail
Older games can depend on more than the files in the installation folder. Ask these questions while the original setup still works:
- Which Windows version, driver model, display mode, processor architecture or hardware feature does it expect?
- Does it require the original disc, a product key, an account login, a launcher or a one-time activation server?
- Are patches, downloadable content, matchmaking, leaderboards or other features fetched from a live service?
- Are saves and configuration stored in the game folder, a user profile, a hidden application-data directory or a publisher-specific cloud service?
- Does the game use a proprietary platform, encrypted files or a physical device that will need to be retained alongside the software?
Write the answers in your preservation notes. The Library of Congress guidance explains that a DRM- or encryption-dependent file may require a virtual or emulated platform, or a physical platform, alongside the file itself. That is an archival principle, not a promise that one emulator or compatibility layer will run every title.
Check for an authorized modern release first
A publisher or storefront may continue selling a modernized edition after support for the original build ends. Such a release can include updated installers, adjusted dependencies and a supported way to install the game on current systems, so search for it before attempting elaborate compatibility work.
GOG describes its Preservation Program as maintaining selected games for modern systems, supplying DRM-free releases and offering dedicated technical support. Its page displayed “Games in the program:308” when accessed in 2026. That number is a vendor catalog count, not a measure of all preserved games, and the catalog can change. Verify the exact title, edition, language and region at the time you need it.
Verify that the re-release is actually the same product
- Compare the edition and included expansions with your owned copy.
- Check whether the modern release is authorized for your region and whether it includes the patches or manuals you need.
- Read the listed operating-system requirements and launcher or account requirements rather than assuming “classic” means fully offline.
- Keep your original disc or installer even if you buy a re-release. It documents the version you owned and may contain content omitted from a later edition.
If no supported authorized version exists, continue with your original lawful copy and preserve its context. Do not substitute an unverified download merely because a title has been delisted.

Build a complete preservation package
Keep the software and its supporting material together
Create a clearly named folder or archive for the game and retain the original media separately. Include:
- The installer files or a sector-accurate personal copy of the disc, where you are allowed to make that copy.
- All patches and updates you lawfully downloaded, with version numbers and dates.
- Manuals, readme files, maps, keyboard layouts, configuration utilities and included documentation.
- Product keys, activation instructions and account or launcher notes, stored in a secure location.
- Save files, screenshots of working settings and configuration files from a successful installation.
- A plain-text inventory describing the source, edition, language, patch level, operating system and hardware used for the test.
Do not edit the only copy while experimenting. Work from a duplicate and keep the original installer or disc write-protected when practical. If you need to apply a patch, preserve the unpatched files as well as the patched result; an update can remove the ability to reproduce the original state.
Label versions and sources
Use filenames that answer basic questions without opening the files, such as Game_Edition_Installer_Source, Patch_1.04 or Save_2026-10-17. In a text file, record where each file came from, when you acquired it and whether it was copied from physical media or downloaded from an authorized account. This context is as important as the binary files when a future operating system or installer behaves differently.
Make more than one copy
Keep a second copy on a separate device or in a separate storage location. A failed drive, damaged disc or mistaken overwrite should not destroy the only preserved package. Periodically open the archive or mount the disc image to confirm that the files remain readable; the cited Library of Congress guidance supports preservation copies and documentation but does not prescribe a consumer backup interval, so choose a schedule you can actually maintain.
When you move a copy to new storage, compare its contents with the earlier copy and update your notes. If an archive contains a key or personal account information, protect that material even when the game files themselves are harmless to share.

Separate the game from its dependencies
A useful preservation record has one entry for each dependency instead of a vague note saying “works on an old PC.” Use this matrix while the game is still available:

This distinction prevents a common mistake: preserving a complete folder while losing the license check, server, disc or platform that made the folder usable.
Test the preserved copy on a current PC
Use ordinary, supported settings first. Test from a duplicate of your preservation package and keep a written log so another installation can reproduce the result.
- Prepare a clean test location. Install from your preserved disc or installer rather than from a random internet mirror. Note the Windows version, hardware and user account used for the test.
- Apply only documented patches. Follow the version order in your notes. Record the final version shown by the launcher or in the game’s about screen.
- Test offline and online separately. Start the game with the network disconnected, then test activation, downloadable content and multiplayer with the network restored. This reveals which features are genuinely local.
- Exercise a complete play loop. Launch a new game, save, quit, restart, load the save and change a setting. Confirm where saves and configuration files are written.
- Record failures precisely. Capture error text, crash timing, missing-file messages and display or audio problems. “Does not work” is not enough information for a future repair.
- Preserve the working configuration. Copy the tested saves and configuration files back into the preservation package, alongside the operating-system and hardware notes.
When the current operating system is not enough
If the game depends on a legacy platform, research a game-specific compatibility layer, virtual machine or emulator and retain the exact version and settings that worked. The Library of Congress notes that emulated or virtual platforms can be part of preserving software, but it does not certify a universal tool. Treat every recommendation as title- and edition-specific.
Test the legacy environment without discarding the original files. A virtual or emulated platform may reproduce the operating system or hardware assumptions while still requiring the original media, product key or activation service. Document all of those dependencies instead of describing the environment as a complete solution.

If you own a disc but have no optical drive
An external USB DVD drive can let a computer read a disc-based release when the computer has no built-in optical drive. It addresses only the physical-reading problem. It does not supply missing patches, solve DRM or license checks, recreate an unavailable activation server, or make an incompatible game run on a current operating system.
Plan for launchers, authentication and server shutdowns
Activation is a separate preservation risk
A local installer can remain readable while a one-time activation service disappears. During a successful installation, record whether activation was required, whether the game could start after disconnecting from the network, and which account or launcher performed the check. Keep those notes with the installer, but do not attempt to defeat an access control simply because it is inconvenient.
If a publisher announces an end-of-life date, install and test your lawful copy before that date where the terms allow it. Preserve the confirmation screens and version information as documentation. A backup cannot manufacture a valid license token or restore a service that no longer answers.
Multiplayer and cloud features may not survive
Separate the single-player files from services such as matchmaking, leaderboards, cloud saves and downloadable content. Preserve local saves and configuration, and write down which features were tested, but do not claim that a local archive recreates the publisher’s servers, account system or multiplayer community. If the game is fundamentally server-hosted, preserving the client may document access without preserving the playable service.

What delisting does—and does not—mean
Delisting generally means a title is no longer offered for new purchase through a particular channel. It does not turn every copy on the internet into a lawful replacement for a copy you own. Keep your original disc, installer or authorized account access, and check for an authorized re-release before looking elsewhere.

Is it legal to download an old game that is no longer sold?
There is no single answer for every country, edition or download source. In the United States, Copyright Office materials explain that Section 1201 generally prohibits circumventing technological measures that control access to copyrighted works. Exemptions are created through a statutory process for defined classes, users, purposes and time periods; they are not a permanent general permission to obtain an old game from an unverified source.
The 2024 Register of Copyrights recommendation discusses limited preservation exemptions for eligible libraries, archives and museums, with conditions that include noncommercial activity and restrictions on access outside institutional premises. Those provisions do not automatically authorize an individual to bypass DRM, upload a copy, share it publicly or rely on the rule in another country. Review the current rule and applicable license terms, and obtain qualified legal advice for a disputed copying or circumvention question.
For personal preservation, the safest practical boundary is to retain and back up the lawful copy you already possess, avoid unverified copyrighted downloads and do not redistribute installers, disc images, keys or patched executables. A game’s age or delisted status alone is not evidence that it is free to download or share.

Do not rank these routes without naming the game and edition. A DRM-free re-release may be the simplest answer for one title, while an original disc and a documented legacy environment may be the only lawful route for another.
Troubleshoot by dependency, not by guesswork
The installer will not start
- Confirm that you are using the preserved installer or disc for the correct edition and language.
- Check the recorded operating-system requirement and whether the disc needs to be present during installation.
- Try the documented, ordinary compatibility settings from your successful test before adding third-party components.
- Record the exact error and stop before replacing files with an unverified download.
The game installs but will not launch offline
- Review the activation and launcher notes. The failure may be a license check rather than a missing game file.
- Test the original patch order and confirm that the product key belongs to this edition.
- Compare the working configuration and save locations with the new test account.
- If a service is unavailable, document the dependency; a local backup cannot recreate the publisher’s authentication system.
The game launches but saves or expansions are missing
- Locate the user-profile or application-data directories identified during your successful test.
- Restore saves and configuration from the preserved package, one version at a time, keeping a backup before each change.
- Verify that the expansion or downloadable content belongs to the same edition and patch level.
- Test loading a copied save before overwriting any current save.
Multiplayer no longer works
Determine whether the problem is a local network configuration or a retired publisher service. Preserve the client, local profiles and settings, but describe the multiplayer service as unavailable rather than promising that a compatibility layer can restore it.
Create a preservation record another person can use
A compact record prevents your archive from becoming a mystery box. Keep a text or HTML file beside the game files with fields like these:

- Keep the original media or installer, not only an extracted game folder.
- Retain patches, manuals, keys, saves and configuration notes with the matching edition.
- Store a second copy on a separate device or location and check that it remains readable.
- Refresh the test after major operating-system or hardware changes, working from a duplicate.
- Update the record when an authorized re-release appears or when a publisher changes its launcher or service.
- Keep legal boundaries visible: preservation of your lawful copy is different from bypassing access controls or distributing someone else’s files.
Bottom line
The durable unit of preservation is the game plus its context: edition, lawful source, patches, documentation, saves, configuration, operating environment, physical media and online dependencies. An authorized modern release is worth checking first, but no storefront, backup or compatibility tool can guarantee that a vanished activation service or multiplayer server will return. Preserve what you own, document what it needs and keep your copies private and legally obtained.
