If someone has posted or threatened to share an intimate image without your consent, put immediate safety first. You can report what happened without first collecting screenshots or the image. When it is safe, preserve the surrounding details—such as the post URL, account identifiers, dates, threats, and reports—without downloading or forwarding the intimate image. If anyone depicted may be under 18, do not screenshot, record, or share the image; contact police or an appropriate specialist service for direction.
What to do first if someone is threatening to share your photos
- Get to safety if there is immediate danger. Contact local emergency services if you or someone else is at immediate risk.
- Do not let evidence gathering delay a report. In the UK, you can report sextortion to police with the information you have; you do not need to collect screenshots or images first. Ask police what additional information, if any, they need. Police.uk sextortion guidance
- Report through an appropriate channel when safe. You can report the content or account to the platform. Reporting routes vary: Australia’s eSafety Commissioner says you do not have to report to the platform before reporting to eSafety. eSafety image-based abuse reporting
- Secure relevant accounts and personal information. Consider steps such as changing passwords and reviewing account access, especially if the person threatening you may have access to your accounts. RAINN includes account security in its response guidance. RAINN
What information to preserve when it is safe
Record the context around the abuse rather than making extra copies of intimate imagery. A brief, factual account can help you explain what happened to a platform, police, regulator, or support service.
- Where the content appeared and, if available, the direct post or message URL.
- The platform or service name and the account name, username, handle, or platform ID involved.
- Dates and times you found the content, received a message, or were contacted.
- What happened, including whether there were threats, demands for money, or other forms of extortion.
- Related messages, threats, or payment demands, and details of reports already made to a platform, police, or regulator.
RAINN recommends documenting what happened in plain language and, when safe, keeping screenshots, links, and message details. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner also asks people to record contact details, identifiers, timing, and previous reports. RAINN · eSafety

A screenshot of a post or message may record useful context, but capture only what is needed and consider your safety first. Some apps may notify another person when you take a screenshot, screen recording, or download. Check the app’s behavior if you can do so safely, and avoid an action that could alert or provoke the person threatening you. eSafety guidance on image-based abuse

Do not forward an intimate image to friends, colleagues, or public forums as proof. Singapore’s Online Safety Commission says intimate images should only be kept or shared when reporting to it or another public authority, or for court proceedings, and only for as long as necessary. If you are unsure what you may lawfully retain, seek advice from local police or a specialist service. Singapore Online Safety Commission
Where to report and what to expect
The right route depends on where you are, the type of content, and whether anyone is in immediate danger. A platform, regulator, police service, or specialist support organization may each have a role; they are not always steps you must complete in a fixed order.
